If I can't tell myself honestly that this piece looks good, then that is going to be really detrimental to my work. Why I add so much detail to my sculpture. What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about why it's important to be adding a lot of detail and spend time to make your pottery look good. For those that don't know me, it is my mission to help potters like yourself to discover their own unique voice with their pottery. So now let's get right into it.
Efficient Pottery Techniques and Methods

So yesterday, when I was making my sculpture characters,
00:00:56
Speaker
I was making my characters and I was doing this kind of like sets of where I time myself for about 45 minutes. And during that time I worked for 45 minutes. And then once that timer hits, I take like a five, 10 minute break so that I could get my work done. Still be in that flow state of making. But while I was doing this and I was while I was making my characters,
00:01:24
Speaker
I noticed that I take a really, really, really long time to add the detail on my pottery. And I started coming up with new ways on how to actually make it a little bit easier while still being able to have that same functional work or that same way where my pottery looks good by speeding it up a little bit. And I kind of found a way, not too sure yet. I'm still playing around with it.
00:01:53
Speaker
But, and I started asking myself, why do I add so much detail to my sculptures? Nobody's gonna see this tiny detail that I make on my sculptures, but why do I keep doing it anyways? Well, the first reason why I do it is because I want my pottery to look good. I want my pottery to look good for me first. That's the first reason why I do it.
00:02:19
Speaker
is because if it doesn't look good to me first and there's no point in me trying to sell it to somebody else if I don't think it looks good I have to be my first critic if I can't tell myself honestly that this piece looks good then that is gonna be really detrimental to my work it's not going to be as good as it could be because I am my first critic you are your first critic as well
00:02:46
Speaker
you have to like the work that you are making.
The Impact of Detail and Patience in Pottery
00:02:50
Speaker
The second is why I put so much detail, even though most people probably won't notice the detail, is simply because if I don't do this, then what will my pottery look like if I don't do this? Will it look bad? Will it look even better? Who knows? Or will it show off that I'm not taking care of my pottery, right?
00:03:14
Speaker
sometimes we have to put in that little bit of extra effort to make our pottery look that much better and when you take time to put in that tiny little bit of effort other people are going to notice I remember in high school my ceramics teacher he told everyone that you should all be trimming your pots because that little bit of extra effort people will notice it and it's going to be easier to sell your pottery
00:03:42
Speaker
And for whatever reason, that stuck with me. That one thing he said just stuck with me and it's been six years since I've even talked to him. That one thing has stuck with me.
00:03:54
Speaker
And I still try to hold this true today with my own work. I try to put in that little bit of extra effort. A little bit of extra effort to make my pottery look that much better. To give it that much more detail. Even though nobody will probably notice it. And it may take me a lot longer to do. But I do it anyways because this is what it takes to make good art. Good pottery. Good pottery takes time to make.
00:04:23
Speaker
And if you don't have the patience to make your pottery look good, then maybe you're in the wrong space. Maybe you are in the wrong space and you have to spend that time to just make it look a little bit better. Add those tiny little bit of details that maybe nobody will notice because you know who was noticing?
Embracing and Showcasing Unique Pottery Styles
00:04:43
Speaker
You. You're noticing.
00:04:45
Speaker
Because if you're not proud of the work that you're making, then there's no point in trying to get it to sell or trying to have somebody else see it. You have to be proud of the work that you're making first. Remember, you are your first critic. And in order to make the best part of the possibly can, you have to be honest with yourself and add that tiny bit of extra detail, even though nobody will notice it.
