The Role of Truth in Developing Pottery Style
00:00:17
Speaker
And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about why you need to be truthful to yourself with your pottery in order to truly find your own unique voice. Because if you can't be truthful, then you can't find your own unique voice.

You see, I am part of this program, I guess you could say, to become the man that I want to be. It's about teaching men how to be men, how to be men so that they can live the life that they want. And the core principle around being the man that you're supposed to be is to tell the truth. Tell the truth, be real, be raw, in whatever setting.
Creating Authentic Pottery Pieces
00:00:55
Speaker
So that's what I have been practicing as of late, the last, I guess, couple months, you could say.
00:01:01
Speaker
So I've been practicing being truthful to myself and to others. And as I've been practicing this, I have noticed that it also applies to pottery as well. If you can't be truthful about your own pottery,
00:01:15
Speaker
then you can never find your own unique voice. Because if you are only making what you think will sell, but you don't think it looks good, then you're not being truthful to yourself. You're not making pottery that really is more authentic to yourself. Because you're not being truthful, you're only doing it to try to make a quick buck.
00:01:37
Speaker
which is really not okay. I really, cause I too myself went through that stage where I was making pottery only to sell, only try to sell it. And, but I didn't like what I

was making. I didn't like the things that were coming out that I was making and it was just wasn't really soothing my own soul, which is why you need to be truthful about the things that you are making and that you see other people's pottery. You know, I'm not saying to go out and just go bash other people's pottery like, yeah, that that's pure shit.
00:02:08
Speaker
But I'm saying to be truthful in what you like and what you don't like. You know, it's important to find those things out. For me, for example, with pottery, if I even see a mug that can only hold like one finger,
00:02:25
Speaker
I absolutely hate those types of mugs because I have bigger hands and I need mugs that can fit at least two to three fingers in there. And that's my personal preference. I don't like small handles on my mugs. And that is what the things that I don't like about pottery and other people's pottery. So I have to have handles that fit my hand. It has to be comfortable.
00:02:50
Speaker
You know what are the things that you don't like with other people's pottery and you have to be truthful about this because if you can be truthful about this and then you're going to get closer and closer and closer and closer to what you actually like.
00:03:02
Speaker
And it's the same thing on what you like.
Evaluating Pottery with Honesty
00:03:05
Speaker
You have to ask yourself the question, do I like this? Yes or no? And that's it. There's no middle, there's no outside forces, whatever. It's only yes or no. Do I like this? Yes or no? Whatever you are making with your pottery, maybe you're making a vase or you're trying something new and you get done making it.
00:03:27
Speaker
Look at it for a second. Look at it. Take it all in. Look at it for a second and ask yourself, do I like this? Yes or no? And if you the answer is no, don't make it. Don't pursue it or do something else with that that pottery. But if you like it, then keep on going further with it and keep on improving it.
00:03:51
Speaker
But you will only get that if you are truthful with yourself, right? Sit on it for a second, for maybe a few minutes, maybe even a day on whatever you're making and ask yourself, do I like this pot that I make? Yes or no? And it has to be a yes in order for you to move forward.
Finding Your Unique Pottery Voice
00:04:09
Speaker
And that's why it's important for you to be truthful with yourself.
00:04:13
Speaker
Because if you're truthful with yourself, then you know what you want, then you are going to get closer to finding your own unique voice. And the gap is going to shrink and shrink and shrink and shrink because you're being truthful with yourself and you are actively pursuing finding your own pottery voice. Thanks for listening to this episode of Shaping Your Pottery.
