Incorporating Life into Pottery
00:00:34
Speaker
What is up, everybody? It's Nick Torres here. And in this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about how you can incorporate things from your life and add it to your pottery. So you see, I just had a really great interview with Betsy Morningstar.
00:00:52
Speaker
And one of the things that really stood out to me with this interview was that Betsy writes down pretty much everything that happens in her life. And then not only that she incorporates what she writes down from her life into her pottery.
00:01:09
Speaker
While her pottery is a little bit easier to do that with because it's literally lined paper pottery, but the concepts are still the same. How can you start incorporating something that happens in your life into your pottery?
00:01:24
Speaker
How can you do that? Well, let's talk about that for a second. You see, we all have things in our lives that either stand out to us or that just kind of happen to us frequently. What if instead of making the typical mug or vase where you are just making something that looks kind of like what almost everybody else makes, what if you tried incorporating something from your own life?
00:01:51
Speaker
You see, what Betsy does with her pottery is that things that she hears that she thinks are really meaningful to her, she'll write it down and she'll write that sentence onto her pottery.
The Art of Being Present in Pottery
00:02:04
Speaker
And that is really, really cool because you're being more present about your pottery. You're being present about just your whole life because you're writing it down and then you're adding it to your pottery.
00:02:16
Speaker
What if you guys started doing the same thing? Now, you don't have to do exactly what Betsy's doing where she's doing line paper pottery and she's writing down what she hears throughout the day and what her experiences are. But for you, you could take something that you really like.
00:02:32
Speaker
Hey, if you're enjoying this episode, I would really appreciate it if you could share it with one of your friends. I'm sure somebody out there could get some value from this episode. I would really appreciate it if you could share it. Now let's get back to the episode.
Personal Passions in Pottery Design
00:02:46
Speaker
Maybe you like Star Wars or maybe you like just superheroes or maybe you like sports. How can you add these things that you like from your life and how can you add it to your pottery? Maybe if you like sports, let's say you like football.
00:03:01
Speaker
What if you made a football mug? You made a mug that looks like a football, or maybe you add a person's jersey to it. Could you imagine the possibilities you will have because how unique your pottery looks like just by adding something that you like outside of pottery as well? These things are what is gonna help you discover your own voice by adding in things that you like outside of pottery into your own pottery now.
Finding Your Unique Pottery Voice
00:03:30
Speaker
Let's say you like making, you like cooking. Let's say you like cooking. What if you made a straight up pan, a pan that you could cook out of with your pottery? Simple enough, right? Or maybe you made a mug that looks like a certain dish that you like or something that is really tasty to you, like a pizza maybe.
00:03:58
Speaker
What if you just started thinking about in terms of that way instead of making the traditional pottery?
00:04:04
Speaker
If you can get out of your comfort zone and start adding in things from your life that you like, then you can start developing your voice a lot faster and you're gonna be able to distinguish, be distinguished a lot better compared to someone that doesn't have unique voice, someone that isn't incorporating what they like from outside of pottery into their pottery.
Listener Engagement and Feedback
00:04:25
Speaker
So this is my final question to you. How can you
00:04:29
Speaker
add what you like outside of pottery into your pottery. Think about that for a second and let me know how you can try to start incorporating that. I would love to hear from you guys.
