On this episode of Shaping Your Pottery we talk about Collaring. Collaring is essential when making a cylinder because it can help realign the clay back into a cylinder.

How Do You Collar the Clay?

Step1: start by placing both hands on the outside of the clay

Step2: act like you are going to choke the clay

Step3: move your hands up the clay while keeping your hands stable

if your clay is getting to wide but you don't want it to do that collaring is a great way to help with that.

Choking and Collar Techniques Explained

So essentially, coloring is

pretty much just choking the clay so it gets closer to the center so it's not so wide. Because you see what happens is while we're throwing on the wheel, it will naturally become a bowl while we're throwing on a wheel. So that's why we can't let it. But sometimes if it becomes a little bit too wide, that's where coloring comes in.

you need to be able to kind of master this skill a little bit so that you can really make good cylinders and make everything go smoothly. Because if it gets too wide, then it becomes a bowl, then it becomes, you can't really do anything if you were planning on making a vase. So you have to master the collaring technique. And the collaring technique is simply, for this one, you wanna wrap your hands around the clay, both your hands around the clay, instead of having one on the inside, both on the outside.

Hand Positioning and Speed

and act like you are pretty much choking someone. Like if you've ever seen that in a movie, how their hands are both around their neck, that is what you wanna do. Your hands are gonna be around the neck of the cylinder. And for this one, you will want your wheels to go just a tad bit faster.

and you are essentially choking the clay. You literally choke the clay. You go up as the wheel is spinning, you move both your hands up until the cylinder gets back to straight instead of flared out. Usually it is just the rim that is flared out.

But coloring also makes it so you can get taller pieces with maybe a little bit of clay or maybe if you have a lot of clay, you can get taller, you can get higher.

So coloring helps a lot with your cylinder and your throwing process.
