Speaker
what is up my pottery shakers and welcome to shape of your pottery finding your shape that you like is very crucial to kind of finding your own style your own pottery style something that works for you and it will make things a lot easier for you because you already have the shape in your mind and it just

kind of helps with everything. You get your own style and you just you see what you like and what you don't like.

Four Steps to Discover Your Style

00:00:41
Speaker
In this episode I'm going to give you four steps to finding a style that you like, a shape that you like. So now the very first step and is by far the biggest step

Research and Inspiration

00:00:54
Speaker
is you have to do research. What's so great about social media today is that you can look at Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Google. You can look at all these places and you can see what you like and what you don't like. Now, I recommend writing down names of people's pottery that you like. Write down about 10 to 20 names.
00:01:22
Speaker
This brings me to my second step. After you have written down those 10 to 20 names, start modeling what they make. If you like a base that they make, model it. Try to make it almost exactly how they make it. If you like a mug, try to make your mugs look exactly like that. Just keep on modeling and modeling and modeling, and you're gonna be able to see what you like and what you don't like.

Experiment and Personalize

Speaker
Now, the third step is,
00:01:51
Speaker
Once you have found a shape that you like that other people are making and you're getting pretty good at making it, what you want to do now is change one thing. Do one thing different that the other person does not do. I'll give you an example. So let's say you are making a base. When you like this base, it is a round base that is
00:02:19
Speaker
has a small neck. What if instead it has a small neck? What if you had a little bit of a wider neck that is taller? That is something different. And if you don't like it, change something again. You keep on making these small little changes and eventually you're going to be able to find your style.

Practice and Evolve

00:02:41
Speaker
The fourth and last step is you want to keep on doing repetitions.
00:02:48
Speaker
The more you do repetitions, the more you're gonna be able to find your own style. And another thing to kind of get to know is don't fall in love with your work. Start trashing the ones that you don't like and then keep the ones that you do. If you don't fall in love with your work, you're gonna be able to make more adjustments faster. So get out there and start doing these repetitions and do your research.
