and how this is really beneficial for you to help you discover your voice and help you get really good at making certain things. I just had a really great interview with Lindy Beal. And in this episode, one of the things that Lindy was talking about was not doing too much to her pottery. And she goes on to say how like, how she struggles with like how she sometimes she just wants to add, keep on adding things and adding things.
Avoiding Over-Complication in Pottery

then she said that i have to practice not doing too much to my pottery so that it comes out the way i want it and it comes out better in my mind and i thought that was so fascinating and so beneficial to you guys to help you guys discover your voice here's why i think this is super beneficial because sometimes

We are all going about making pottery and we all want to add all these different things, all these kinds of things, all these techniques into our pottery.
00:01:25
Speaker
And we end up getting a big jumble of a mess because we're adding so much and so many things all at once into our style, into our pottery. But sometimes we need to take a step back a little bit so that we're not making a jumbled mess with

our pottery. Think of it like this. Let's say you are cooking some ground beef or just maybe cooking anything.
00:01:49
Speaker
And you start adding in all these different seasonings and you maybe have like seven to 10 different seasonings in there. What's going to happen to the food if you add all those seasonings? Well.
00:02:00
Speaker
Your food's going to taste really, really salty probably and it's going to be a big jumbled mess into your mouth.
Benefits of Simplifying Pottery Techniques
00:02:07
Speaker
And it's the same thing with our pottery. If we do too much to our pottery, then your voice doesn't really show up. It just has too many styles, too many things going on all at once. But instead, if we learn to take a step back and really just focus on in on a couple of things that we want to add to our pottery and not going overboard with it,
00:02:30
Speaker
And our voice is gonna show up a lot better. Not only that, we're gonna get better at the things that we're making because we're focusing in on a few things rather than going really, really broad about everything and trying to add everything into your pottery. So maybe if you like to say, let's say you like making animal themed pottery. And in this animal themed pottery, you add carvings, and then you add a bunch of glazes, and then you add some sculptures onto it.
00:02:59
Speaker
See that is too much going on all at once. You have to narrow it down a little bit. You can have one to two different techniques at once, in my opinion.
00:03:11
Speaker
And then once you get good at that, try to figure out different ways to improve it as well as you go along and get better and better.
Maintaining Clarity in Pottery Style
00:03:19
Speaker
That's why it's important to not do too much to your pottery so that you can focus in on what is working and get better at making things look simple. If we go too overboard, it's like adding a bunch of seasoning into your food and it just becomes a jumbled mess.
