Evaluating Pottery Progress
00:00:35
Speaker
Does your pottery communicate better than it did a year ago, a month ago, or even a week ago? What is up, everybody? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about, are you making progress with your pottery? Does your work communicate better than it did in the past?
Focus on Style Over Sales
00:00:57
Speaker
You know, when I was first venturing out into pottery on my own, and I tell the story a lot, but I'm telling it again, when I was first

venturing out into part of it on my own. The one thing I had in my mind was to make a lot of mugs so that I can sell them. And I was only focused on one thing. I wasn't focused on the actual style of the pot. I was only focused on trying to sell my pottery.
00:01:22
Speaker
And in doing so, I ended up learning a lot of things along the way, being that I shouldn't be focusing solely on trying to sell my pottery. Because when you solely try to focus on trying to sell your pottery, then what begins to happen is you're not actually trying to build up your

skills. You're not actually trying to make the pottery that you know is going to bring out your true voice. You're not beginning to make progress.
00:01:50
Speaker
And while it took me a long time to know that, to learn that, I guess that mindset of just improving 1% at a time, it still holds true today. And it's important to look back at your old work, your old past work, maybe from a year ago, a month ago, five years ago, whatever it is, it's important to go look back at those work and look at your current work now. Because what begins to happen is you can start seeing a little bit of patterns in your work.
00:02:20
Speaker
whether it's communicating better or whether it's not communicating better. Because if you can ask yourself the question, does my pottery communicate better than it did a year ago, a month ago, or a week ago, and you can answer that question with a yes, with a foolhardly yes, then you are well on your way to finding your voice a lot better. But if the answer is no, then what is it that you are doing that isn't communicating better?

What are you doing to try to make it communicate better?
Assess and Adapt for Growth
00:02:53
Speaker
You know, maybe right now what you are making is looks almost exactly the same as you were making a year ago. I don't think that is making progress at all. If you're making the exact same thing you were making a year ago, then that's not really progress. You have to be willing to get uncomfortable, get uncomfortable so that you can start making that progress. Finding your voice is all about

making progress with your pottery. It's not about finding the magic bullet, it's not finding about the magic pot of gold so you can find your own unique voice, your own unique style all in one shot. It's about taking those little actions to try to improve your pottery and to make progress with it. And I ask you again the question, does your pottery communicate better than it did a year ago or a month ago or a week ago or even five years ago?
00:03:44
Speaker
Go look back at your old pottery and look at your present pottery right now and try to see if it looks better, if it is communicating a little bit better, if it is getting closer to your vision or if it's getting further away. And if it's getting closer, great, stick onto that path.
Pivoting Strategies for Success
00:04:00
Speaker
Continue that path because you know it's working, then you're gonna keep on doing it. But if it's not communicating better, what you need to do is reevaluate your plan.
00:04:12
Speaker
You may have a plan right now that you have been sticking to, but if your vision is getting further and further away or you're not making any progress, then your plan isn't working. You need to pivot. You need to make a new plan. You need to make a new plan so you can get closer to making progress, closer to making your vision come to life.
Encouragement and Next Steps
