Discover the secret to taking your pottery to the next level - embracing the virtue of diligence. Too often, we allow laziness to creep into our lives, and consequently, into our craft. In this episode, I, Nic Torres, speak candidly about the human tendency of seeking shortcuts and the toll it takes on the quality of your pottery. Hear me share personal experiences and lessons learned, as I emphasize the importance of going the extra mile to ensure your pottery stands out.

With insights from my high school teacher, I highlight why great art takes time and every bit of extra effort truly counts. This isn't about just going through the motions but about striving for excellence in every piece you create. Our discussion is a call to action to resist laziness and give your best to your craft.

Human Laziness & Pottery Challenges

00:00:30
Speaker
A lot of times we are lazy. Humans are very lazy creatures.
00:00:48
Speaker
you are more than likely probably going to procrastinate because you don't want to do it. You don't want to do it. But you know what needs to get done. Maybe you have some like community guidelines that have to have your grass shorter than, I don't know, an inch or two, whatever. But you know, you hate the idea of going out there, pulling out the lawnmower and actually doing the grass.
00:01:17
Speaker
Because we're lazy creatures. I'm lazy. You're lazy. You've probably had moments where you've just been super lazy. You didn't want to do anything. And there are times with our pottery where we just don't want to put in that little bit of extra effort. Maybe we're not feeling the best. We're not feeling 100 percent. Maybe we're not just feeling up to what we are making that day. And so we try to take these shortcuts. But if you take a shortcut, will that hinder
00:01:47
Speaker
the way you make your potter with that hinder the way it look. And I think that we should be taking in that extra effort, even if we don't want to, to make our pottery look better.

Lessons from a Ceramics Teacher

00:02:00
Speaker
And that's even if when you don't want to, that's a key indicator that you probably should do it, because that means that your potter is going to look that much better when you put in that extra effort.
00:02:14
Speaker
One of the things that really stood out to me when I was in high school and I learned from my high school teacher, my first ceramics teacher was that he said he always trims his pots because people notice these things. And that was one of the biggest things that really stood out to me. And I still try to apply that to my own pottery as well. Like right now, I'm not really wheel throwing as much.
00:02:38
Speaker
But I still try to put in that extra effort to make my characters and my sculptures look that much better. Just a little bit better putting that extra effort, because if I don't put in that extra effort,
00:02:49
Speaker
my pottery isn't going to soothe my soul and I'm going to feel a little bit bad for the people that maybe are seeing it or buying it because they're not getting my full capabilities of my school crews or my pottery and people notice these things if you start taking too many lackadaisical ways of making your pottery
00:03:10
Speaker
then they're gonna notice these things, they're kind of being lazy and you're just kind of making, you're kind of going through the flow, through the motions, and people will notice these things.

The Effort Behind Great Art

00:03:19
Speaker
So that's why it's so important to put in that extra effort. Great art takes time. The more time you could put on a piece, the better it's gonna turn out.
00:03:29
Speaker
and you have to put in that extra effort in order to make it look that much better. Make it 1% better, 2% better. Just tweak here and there. You have to put in that extra effort because you don't put in that extra effort.
00:03:43
Speaker
and you're not really making to your full capability. The part you're making is just gonna look like everybody else's because you aren't taking in that extra step that you might need to do. Whatever it may be, maybe it's trimming, maybe it's adding a few more dots, maybe it's adding in some texture, whatever you're doing, add in that extra effort and your pottery is gonna look that much better. So you have to add in that extra effort. I hope you guys enjoy this episode and I'll see you guys in the next one.
