Introduction to 'Weeb Along'

00:00:04
Speaker
Welcome to We Will Long. I'm John and I'm forcing my friend Nelson, who doesn't like anime, to watch and discuss different anime. Thanks for tuning in. Let's get started.
00:00:16
Speaker
Hey Weebz, welcome back to the show. My name is Jon. I've got my buddy Nelson here. Say hi, Nelson. Watch me! Yes, and this is Weeb Along, the show where we watch anime shows I've seen quite a bit. My buddy has not, although we are making him grow on that.
00:00:35
Speaker
He has maybe maybe not seen as many, but yeah, I don't know. But you're getting there. Yeah. So it's under your belt. Here's the thing. Here's the thing

Nelson's Journey to Becoming a Weeb

00:00:46
Speaker
about that. Here's the thing about that. So I got a DM on Instagram the other day from a listener who was like, hey, at what point are you actually going to consider yourself a weeb? This is true. And you think the tipping point will be. I mean, you have a wifey list.
00:01:03
Speaker
I do have a waifu list, but also, but also I'm just a degenerate. So I don't really I'm not really going to count that in there. However, what I I told them was I'm like, look, when we have the show up for a year, I'll consider it because at that point, by the time we have like we hit our one year, we're going to be probably what? Six, maybe seven shows in. Well, this is our third.
00:01:33
Speaker
This is our third week. So this is definitely our fifth. Actually, if you include we're including King of Thorn and the attack on Titan. Yeah. So I guess to answer that question, ask me in September. Wake you up when September ends. Heard. No, it's at the beginning. Well.
00:01:52
Speaker
It's the middle of September, but we really like actually started recording in August. So should we ask you at the beginning of September so you can see. Yeah, catch catch me at the middle ground. Mm hmm. How about that? Heard.
00:02:11
Speaker
Shout out to Danielle Bregoli, you know? Oh, that's

Anime Quality Debate

00:02:14
Speaker
her name. Cool. I literally just know where it is to catch me outside, girl. Yeah, it's a whole it's a whole thing. But anyway, let's I guess we'll start talking about this absolute dog ass show. It is not really just wants to make me fall asleep. It is not dog ass. It is actually good. How are you sure about that? Are you sure about that? Yes, I am. Crazy. Can't say in confidence.
00:02:41
Speaker
But yeah, so we watched episode six through eleven.

Naruto's Rescue Mission in the Hidden Leaf

00:02:47
Speaker
Instead of going episode by episode, we're just sort of going to go by like beat by beat. So we'll kick it off with the beginning. We sort of got a little story beat arc in the Hidden Leaf Village where they're doing a mission and then they get assigned a new one and then they start that mission with a assassination attempt. So we'll go through that a little bit.
00:03:07
Speaker
we get to open up they're all doing this little mission that seems like it's you know, they're trying to track down something or someone all have their radios going turns out to be a cat because you know, the elite ninjas the taxpayer dollars go saving cats. Yeah, absolutely. Save the cat foundation. Yes.
00:03:27
Speaker
Yeah, at least it's a rescue, you know? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, we get to see that. They return it to this lovely lady who proceeds to smother the cat with love and affection. And then we get a little breakdown of how shit works for it. Ninjas. We get the same breakdown that I gave you during our last episode between Jonin, Shunin, Genin, and then, you know, the Hokage up at the top and then the Academy people all the way down at the bottom. Again, Naruto Sasuke Sakura, Genin,
00:03:56
Speaker
kakashi jonin so you know skill gap skill issue skill issue yep and each level of ninja gets assigned designated missions based off of difficulty and priority level and the more missions that ninjas collect the monetary stuff comes in which goes to helping the village and so the more ninjas you have the more money you have and so that is why ninjas are a very valuable resource in the world of naruto
00:04:25
Speaker
Which, what it did with that whole breakdown for me, with the hiring process and all that.

Ninja Hierarchy and Missions

00:04:32
Speaker
So I actually had the thought of like, what if somebody's like, I just want the cheap people, even though it's going to be a little rougher than the cheap people? What's preventing somebody from just doing that so they don't have to pay as much? And it was nice to actually have a question answered pretty much immediately.
00:04:52
Speaker
That was very helpful for once. Crazy. It'd be really cool if they did that. Yeah. Huh. Oh, imagine. Oh, weird. They did it. Huh. Odd.
00:05:04
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Because no one complains about that. All he gets is D mission. So they give him a C mission. Turns out to actually be like an S rank or an A rank mission because Zabuza and shit shows up, which makes it a big motherfucker.

Naruto's Growth and Determination

00:05:19
Speaker
It's a big motherfucker. I don't know how anybody could forget a name like Zabuza Momochi, you know, or forget that he just has a really cool sword.
00:05:29
Speaker
I I have no clue that is beyond me how anybody can forget that. Yeah, there'd have to be something wrong with them. Absolutely. Or it's it. So what it could be theoretically was like the first time they might have watched the show and they didn't give a fuck. They were just scrolling Reddit the entire time. Yep. As opposed to watching the show and giving it a shot. Yeah. So somebody
00:05:54
Speaker
theoretically, hypothetically, of course, could have been doing that. I don't know why they would. It doesn't seem like it'd be fair.
00:06:02
Speaker
Yeah, no, that sounds weird that it could also be that the show didn't rope them in as it could have. So they just quit giving a fuck very soon, theoretically, of course. Exactly, exactly. So they were already mentally checked out by the stuff that could grab their attention to them, potentially get them into it. Correct. That you know, that sounds like a very plausible thing for somebody. Uh huh.
00:06:25
Speaker
Not me but somebody. Yeah, no. Not me. No, unnamed source. God damn it. Alrighty. Yeah, we got that little opener. We got the whole mission thing. We get introduced into Tazuna, who is his bridge builder, working on this very important thing. Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait. Let's talk about the opener. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. That thing. We haven't actually discussed that yet. This is true. This is true. What did you think of the 80s flashback?
00:06:53
Speaker
Well, I'm a big fan of 80s music. That 80s like hair metal type stuff, which is it was a very Bon Jovi opener. What the fuck were they thinking?
00:07:07
Speaker
It didn't. The song. Sure, fine. Let's let's it. It was pretty good. Yeah. The actual stuff going on during that. Why do we have a giggling Kakashi? I mean, Kakashi giggles. Does he though? I haven't done that yet. So to put that in the opener.
00:07:27
Speaker
Wait, no, no, I rescind that. I was going to say he giggled while reading his Makeout Paradise book. Yeah, well, we all get a reading smut, but allegedly, but it just the entire everything going on in the animation to me did not did not sit and was not good.
00:07:44
Speaker
So the animation style fits in everything. It just for me, I know all the other openers and Naruto has and especially like just Naruto itself, not including Naruto Shippuden. They're usually a bit more like upbeat or not upbeat, but a little heavier, I guess I would say.
00:08:05
Speaker
as opposed to like upbeat boppy type thing, if that makes sense. No, it does. No, I'm excited for like the next couple of openers and stuff like that, where we get into like more of the guitar, where we get more like I'm excited for go and all those different things. And it is this one is cute. I think that it's meant to be like, oh, we're upbeat. We're cute. We're fun. This is like, oh, hey, our soft pilot pitch.
00:08:33
Speaker
Like if they were to come in with a little bit more like the, you know how the battle music is the bass lick, they're like, if they were to just come in straight with that right off the bat, as opposed to like something upbeat and fun that's, you know, going to air on Cartoon Network and try to appeal to the younger audience to rope them in and then progress them into like the slightly more adult stuff as time goes on. I think that that is why it has that.
00:09:01
Speaker
sort of more eight years wide eyed bushy tail vibe to it. Gotcha.

Animation Style Comparison

00:09:06
Speaker
So here is my other question for you and you don't have to give me an exact answer because you probably don't know it. But off the top of your head, how many opener like different openers do you think there are?
00:09:19
Speaker
Oh, God, just give me just give me like a a range. It doesn't have to be like, I think there's 28 like I don't fucking need any of that. Well, I was going to I'm going to say somewhere around 30. Whoa. So I was kind of close. Yeah. Yeah, I know. I honestly like the first number that gave my head was 38. But then you said it and I was like, well, I can't. I said 20 each. But yeah.
00:09:39
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Well, also, it's tough because they switch openers and shit like that for all the filler stuff as well. Oh, it's like the last four seasons of regular Naruto are just filler. So, yeah, so like, which we won't be watching. Good. So looking up like how many Naruto openers are there? It's sort of like, all right, but also how many of them are you actually listening to?
00:10:05
Speaker
Which also that would suck, like imagine that being your band's like highlight is like, oh yeah, Naruto, I'm opening for it. It's great. And then it's like, Oh yeah. Naruto goes and learns how to use star chakra from a comment thing that doesn't ever get brought up anywhere else in the entire fucking rest of the series. Are you serious? Yep. That is actually one of the, uh,
00:10:32
Speaker
That is one of the filler. So a bunch of the people who like googled, like, what parts can I skip? Totally, probably missed out on some bangers. Mm hmm. Wow. Could be could be because at least I knew coming into this that the music was good. Yes. Because when we were doing like our our finding the intro music, you were like, I want to find something like this. And it was fucking killer. And I was like, dude, this is so good. And you're like Naruto motherfucker. Yep.
00:11:00
Speaker
And they're like, Son of a bitch. Yeah, that's even play the openers. I just played you like the battle, you know, stuff like that. Yep. Well, battle music typically goes hard no matter what it is. Uh huh. Uh huh. So I mean, even like the Attack on Titan battle music is fucking fantastic. Yeah, that was great. The J.J.K. Battle music is so

Character Development in Naruto

00:11:20
Speaker
good as well. The one with either Dorian Obara fighting the curse one. Oh.
00:11:27
Speaker
That's always what I think of whenever I think of like good music is a BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM. And then they both black flash and say, Oh, God. All right. But getting back to it, because I know I could talk about the music shit for like hours. Right. But, yeah, back to Naruto. Unfortunately, where were we? Oh, yeah. Tazuna enters.
00:11:48
Speaker
Tazuna being this famous bridge builder, architect bitch, chulas from the land and a drunk. Yep. From the land of waves. So the Hidden Leaf Village is in the land of fire, which is pretty much centrally located. Land of waves is in the city, a cluster of islands and shit like that in the water because, you know, land of waves, waves. Yeah. I assumed it would be something water related. Yes. Yes.
00:12:16
Speaker
Now that is like the general area. There's also smaller things like different villages and stuff like that. Inside like there is the Hidden Leaf Village that's in the land of fire. There's also a whole bunch of other smaller villages and stuff like that. It is not just limited to that. And so we get stuff like the Hidden Mist Village, which is a subsect of the land of water. So the land of water doesn't exactly have its main ninja thing, but there are ninjas and everything from the land of water.
00:12:44
Speaker
It's weird to me how that every every country does seem to have its own. It's not just like a like a shared organization. Well, I mean, we don't have a like we have the U.N. OK, yeah. Yeah. But like this is like, you know, like America has their stuff and everyone, every different country usually has her own military. But can you hire from a different village?
00:13:09
Speaker
Like if I'm in the if I'm in like the land of water, right, which is not where Naruto and everybody's from, correct? Correct. So if I'm there and I'm like, I have a special thing that needs to be done, but holy shit, do I need somebody really good? Can I hire Kakashi? You can request aid from an outside village. Cool. OK.
00:13:28
Speaker
Uh-huh. And it's not like they don't all get together always. So in the next arc is the Chunin exam marks. That is when all the Genin from all the different villages can get together to then try to go through these tests to become the next level of Chunin. And it's going to be a whole bunch of people from
00:13:48
Speaker
all over the world coming over. And that is when we're going to get experienced with more characters and stuff like that. Again, this is right now, I would say that this arc is sort of the first Zabuza fight would be the first curse womb. OK. Where Sukuna takes over. And then you have the forest with the training and all that would be each Dori watching movies and then the bridge builder stuff.
00:14:18
Speaker
Are the attack on the bridge which will get into next chunk is going to be more of the up up up up like June pay versus each adore. Fight stuff when everything pops off a little bit after that we go into the key auto exchange event which will be beginning of the tuning exams and then yeah.
00:14:39
Speaker
Yep. We're going to stop talking there some way there. There are not spoilers, but I want spoilers. Keep me invested. Actually, get me not even keep get me invested. Well, we're going to watch it and then that's going to get you invested. Crazy. I'm out. No.
00:14:57
Speaker
But yeah, we have Tazuna, voiced by Kirk Thornton. This one's a little bit more obscure, don't know if you're gonna... He voices a lot of Naruto characters. Lots of Naruto characters that we'll get to later on. Right. Have not fully encountered yet. However, you know who Sonic the Hedgehog is, right? I'm familiar with Sonic, yes.
00:15:16
Speaker
Okay, so there are actually a lot of characters from Sonic that are in Naruto. We talked during the last thing about how both Ino and also Sakura have voiced Tails in some iterations. That's right. Yeah, so Kirk Thornton has actually voiced Shadow the Hedgehog. Oh, uh-huh, uh-huh.
00:15:36
Speaker
So that's that's a fun little thing. That is a fun one. We actually have another voice actor who has done another thing from from Sonic Sonic that also is in this episode cluster. But yeah, they start there. I'm sure. Oh, you betcha. We start this whole arc going on and they leave the village on this little thing as they leave. They pass by a puddle and
00:16:03
Speaker
It hasn't rained for three weeks, and there's a puddle on the ground. Kakashi clocks this, and he goes, hey, that's a little fucky-wucky. That probably shouldn't be there. And lo and behold, two ninjas from the land of water pop right out and out of it, and they had these, like, linked shurikens that have poison on it, and they go for Kakashi. He does a little substitution thing, gets away, but they don't know that. They then go for Naruto, who fucking freezes up and... He sucks!
00:16:30
Speaker
He's terrible. He I don't give a shit that he's. He has a lot of room to grow.

Naruto's Courageous Acts

00:16:37
Speaker
Once again, it could not get worse. Exactly. You start somebody in the face and they're just like, I'm just going to stand here and take it either. Don't fight them because they're fucking scary or they got to do better. Yeah, no, he he will do better in the future, but he he do not do good right now. He he freezes up. Sakura actually does more than him, actually puts her body in between the assailants and also the clients. That way, if they are going, then they hit her first before they hit the client.
00:17:07
Speaker
And Sasuke actually does some shit. He takes out their chain. He pins it to the fucking tree with a shuriken and a kunai locking it in place. They have to detach. They have their claws. And then he pretty sure grabs both of their arms as they go to attack Sakura. And then he pivots mid air and then kicks them both in the face. They then recover and
00:17:27
Speaker
Kashi comes back, right, as they're about to do some more killing shit, and he, you know, knocks him both out in one punch, because Kashi used to go. Imagine getting bodied by a, like, hot topic 12-year-old. Yeah. Yeah. Like, you literally just got whomped by the kid who's marching in the Black Parade. Yes. Bruh.
00:17:52
Speaker
when i was a young boy not his father actually not anyone from his clan because i'm the only one left in my clan except for the fact that i'm fucking not my brother took me into the city there you go to kill every fucking one yeah you got it there we are fucking what a recovery buddy you did hey thinking on my feet nailed it
00:18:16
Speaker
Oh, but yeah, no, to be an assassin, they get taken out by a 12 year old. Not great. That whole that whole fight was Naruto deer in the headlights. I already covered my feelings on that. Uh huh. Soccer doing a little something, some little something, something was taking a step to the left. Yes. I don't even know if I'm going to count that as a little something, something like more than. I know. OK, shut the fuck up. She kind of did the job. Are you defending Naruto?
00:18:46
Speaker
No, I am shaming them both. I am defending Sasuke. Sasuke. For actually doing something like good on Yasasuke for not having your head up your ass. No, he did good. That's the most you're going to get out of me is he did good. Wow. Wow. It is real growth.
00:19:09
Speaker
And unfortunately I'm showing more growth than both Naruto and Sakura. You're not wrong. That's absurd. Yeah, Naruto gets a little scratch.
00:19:25
Speaker
And it turns out that there's poison there, and they're like, oh, we should probably go back to the village, get that wound taken care of. And Sasuke gives like a, hey, fucking scaredy cat, you didn't do shit. And Naruto's like, no, we're not turning back just for me. I'm going to be stronger. And then he takes a kunai knife out, and then he stabs it into the wound to then bleed the poison out. Because, you know, that makes sense. Natural progression. Natural progression.
00:19:53
Speaker
That would be thinking on your feet. I love it. What did you think of that? Like him being able to stack himself in the hand so they wouldn't have to slow up the mission. So I don't think he really thought it through. I think he just kind of did it. He went on impulse. Yeah, they were like, you need to bleed it out. And he was like, say less. I'm surprised it didn't come out through the front of his hand. Yeah.
00:20:17
Speaker
But like, it was like, it's not a bad moment. It's not. It shows you a little bit of promise for what his attitude will be in the future of like having that that instinct to make that.
00:20:34
Speaker
Naruto's battle sense that he gets throughout the series is great. And I'm excited to, you know, actually see that develop. I will take your word for it. It'll be good. We'll get there eventually as the characters grow again in power scaling. It'll be great.
00:20:50
Speaker
Cool. But yeah, I think that does it for that little, you know, little

Introduction of Antagonists: Gato and Zabuza

00:20:54
Speaker
interaction. They continue their way. They make it to the land of waves. They go past this bridge. We'll find out why they need the bridge. Land of waves is very isolated from everyone being on an island in, you know, the ocean. So they need this big old bridge so they can connect to the mainland because there's this mobster named Gato. And he is, yep, he is one cool cat.
00:21:16
Speaker
And he. Yep. Nailed it. Right there. He is a dick. That's putting it lightly, but yeah, yeah. Yeah. Sort of like this mobster fucking gangster cunt. Look, at least he hasn't killed anybody's father. Yeah, no, at least. Yeah. So he has like a monopoly on the trade and all the shipping. So he's like, no, no, no.
00:21:39
Speaker
I own all the power here so if they got this bridge built then he loses his power so he's been sending thugs after them so that way he can prevent the bridge from getting finished and that is where the assassins and where this fuck who shows up as soon as they hit the land of waves shows up we get Zabu Zavimochi showing up so cool what a guy yeah what did you think of his entrance was it memorable
00:22:07
Speaker
OK, OK, I will say after after seeing it now. Uh huh. When I'm actually paying attention to the shows that we're watching, theoretically, of course, not like that other guy. Yeah. No, theoretically. Unnamed source. Unnamed source. Nelson. It was it was a hell of an entrance. Yeah. The sword coming down, everybody having to duck. And then he just appears standing on the hill. Yeah.
00:22:37
Speaker
Cool, man. Yeah. You said cool about Naruto. I'm proud of you. No, no, no. I'm saying that he's a cool man. Mm hmm. Heard. Not necessarily that the show is cool, but that is that is something cool heard. Don't you don't you do this to me, you son of a bitch.
00:22:56
Speaker
But yeah, that was a voice by voice by Steve Bloom. I know that one. Yes, you do. You and I high school. One of the things that, you know, we we did a lot of black ops zombies. Oh, shit. Steve Bloom is is that Dempsey? It is Dempsey. Oh, my God.
00:23:17
Speaker
He's also like everywhere under the fucking sun like this man. I was literally scrolling through his credits He's the person who had that one thousand one hundred and eighty one credits on behind the voice actor comm sir Just take a vacation
00:23:34
Speaker
The fuck your wife touch grass do something. And this is only one of the characters that he voices in Naruto and he voices several other characters that are like major characters as well that will get to. So I'm not going to lie, I kind of remembered it was Dempsey because I remember playing zombies with you and another friend and you kind of stopped at one point and you were like, wait a minute.
00:24:00
Speaker
I know this. I know this one. That thing that I do holding a game or something and I recognize the voice actor and you literally just your character stops moving and I'm like this motherfucker is typing. It's the I need to know this otherwise it's going to bother me. Yeah. I remember you just being like.
00:24:22
Speaker
Oh, yep, yep. Yeah, no, he is also many iterations of Wolverine. He's also like Zeb from Star Wars Rebels. And now I think they say Zeb from spy family. Oh, no, but he was he in Sonic.
00:24:39
Speaker
Ooh, I don't think he is in Sonic. You know what? He probably is. Probably actually. There are so many, so many characters. I got most of the way through his list and I was like, he's just in fucking everything. Last name is BLUM. Yes, he is in Code Geass as well. He is in so many shows, so many. There's actually a lot of Naruto people in Code Geass, which is great. Are any of them...
00:25:09
Speaker
Lelouch, actually Lelouch is in this. Is he really? Yeah. We have not met his character yet, but yes. It does not appear that Steve Bloom was in Sonic. Damn. Yeah, he was not, but he is. He was in Ben 10, so good for him. Oh yeah. Just like Sasuke. Sasuke was Ben 10, wasn't he? Exactly.
00:25:34
Speaker
Wait a minute. Hold on. And then someone, I think Akashi is Kevin Levin or something like that. What the fuck's a Kevin Levin? He was like the antagonist. I almost made a Pokemon reference, but I realized that you wouldn't know what that means. You got it. Yep. He's like the rival turn. He's the frenemy.
00:25:55
Speaker
Gotcha. Also, I'm looking at this dude's fucking thing. Who's in bloom? Yeah, he's everyone. God, he's everyone and everywhere all at once. Oh, he was a legends of tomorrow. Yep. Oh, my God. Yeah, he's in so much like it is insane, dude.
00:26:14
Speaker
Star Wars Battlefront 2, the original 2005 as the rebel soldiers. I'm going to be on his thing for a while. I got to get off of this later. Back to the podcast. Yeah, literally. I'm like, I'm out here doing research fun. Yeah, but Zababoo Zamomochi enters the fray. A very fun name, like really one of my favorite names from an anime, just Zababoo Zamomochi. It's it's a fun one to say. I enjoy it. It tickles the brain. Yeah. Yeah.
00:26:43
Speaker
Yeah, he gets his entrance. Him and Kakashi go out a little bit. They go through a little substitution, water clone, shadow clone thing where Kakashi stabs him with a kunai knife and you find out that it's a water clone and so it starts leaking water or as you said... He's milking? Damn it, I forgot about milking. It didn't come out looking like water. It came out looking like milk.
00:27:18
Speaker
I will make it a fun time to not be alive. I have the power. I have the sound board.
00:27:31
Speaker
But yeah, we got this whole Zabuza fight. Kakashi gets into it with Zabuza, Zabuza winds up trapping him in a water prison over the water, and they're like, oh no, he's been sealed like Gojo. Fuck. He's just diet Gojo, bro. Mm-hmm. Gojo light.
00:27:48
Speaker
Gojo Zero. Gojo Zero. Gojo Infinity. And so Kakashi is here. He's like, run, go away. And then they're like, fucking no. And Naruto, Sasuke, try to free Kakashi and they do some stuff. They end up freeing him. Kakashi takes on Zabuza, takes down Zabuza to the point where he's like getting back up. And then all of a sudden these Senban needles come through.
00:28:15
Speaker
So what can go right into his neck and then the bottles yeah the cinnabon needles they got the uh right on there it's directly into the bloodstream.
00:28:27
Speaker
Yep. And yeah, then Haku enters the fray. Haku being, you know, a cool character as well that we'll get to see more of in the next chunk. Everybody immediately looked at Haku and was like, this guy, this boy, who's this guy? And I'm like, are we sure about that? Well, Haku, who is this boy? Who is this Haku?
00:28:47
Speaker
Uh, Haku is voiced by Haku, not really any other stuff. It is, yeah, Haku is Susan Dalian. Okay, so at least it, okay, it is a woman. Voiced by a woman. Haku, the character, is in fact a guy, though. I don't believe that at all. They literally address it in the next chunk of episodes. Oh, that's- Word, Erto, misgender, sir. All right, him. Misgender, sir. Damn.
00:29:16
Speaker
Let's go.

Kakashi's Sharingan and Ninja Lore

00:29:18
Speaker
Yeah. But this is one of, I think, like just a handful of roles that she has done. She's also been a couple iterations of Storm from X-Men. She's another character in Naruto. We got another X-Men parallel. But in it, in it. Yes. She's blooming Wolverine. Let's go. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We got Wolverine and Storm rolling into the fray. We really got a lot of Marvel going on. It's pretty marvelous.
00:29:44
Speaker
Ah, goddamn it. Alrighty. But yeah, we also saw during that fight Kashi using his sharing gun. What'd you think of that whole bidness? I think that there's 98 different fucking ways to pronounce that. Correct.
00:30:02
Speaker
I think you're saying differently. Sharingan. And that's how I will say it is sharingan because I if you look at it. Yeah, it's the way that Sasuke talks. He just it's like such a an emphasis on certain like his emphasis on the correct syllables. But not not fully, though. Like everyone's like, oh, yeah, Naruto. And then he goes, Naruto.
00:30:29
Speaker
or the sharing gun and the sharing gun. Yeah, the shark, the sharing game. Yeah. No, that thing. It seems relatively OP. Yeah. Yeah. Because you're just like, oh, cool. You did that. I'm going to do that, too. Yeah. I know how to do it perfectly, even though I've never used it before in my life. Yeah. I'm a mimic you.
00:30:48
Speaker
Yeah, it's like that. It's like that friend who can pick up any instrument and be like, oh, this is kind of neat. And then proceed to play like fucking cliffs of Dover or like Freebird. Yes. You're like, OK, well, I've devoted 10 years to that and I can't do that.
00:31:03
Speaker
My son of a bitch. You asshole. So I mean, yeah, the the Sharingan is just to pick a destiny. Yeah. And the cool thing that's also revealed a little bit in this is Sasuke brings it up when Sakura's like, what is that? And then Sasuke's like, it's the Sharingan and it is. So there's these things called Kekke Genkai, where it's a bloodline.
00:31:28
Speaker
Thank you. It is a bloodline trait, sort of, you know how J.J.K. had the curse techniques that are passed down through generation, like how- Yeah, yeah, yeah. Fushiguro has his, like, dimensional pocket. Yeah, and then Noritoshi Kamo had the whole bloodbending shit. Yes. Yes. Same thing with this in Naruto. So, the Sharingan is specific to the Uchiha clan. And so, Sasuke is like, that's
00:31:54
Speaker
That's my plan that that's my people's power and they look like a cash is like the fuck do you have it your last. And yeah and that remains a mystery for quite a while so it eventually does get answered yes yes yes yes okay now you said quite a while are we talking more or less than two hundred episodes more or less.
00:32:16
Speaker
Those are your options, yeah. Yeah, more or less. OK. Yeah, but yeah, the shotgun is pretty fucking cool. I enjoy it. It's cool. Yeah, it's nifty. It's a it's a cool thing to just like unveil.
00:32:32
Speaker
Yeah, and it also gave Kakashi the nickname of the copycat ninja because he was able to copy. I think he's copied a thousand different jutsu's off of it or something like that, which we find because Zabuza brings up the bingo books.
00:32:47
Speaker
bingo books are like bounties and the rankings of different ninja throughout all of the world. And if there's a rogue ninja that separates from the village and is going and doing their own thing, they will have a bounty set off of their bingo ranking as well. It's sort of like a stat sheet. Gotcha. Okay.
00:33:09
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. He said the bingo book and that explained what it was, but I was still so focused on what the fling bingo book. Yeah. Why are we calling it that? That's a score. Fuck bingo.
00:33:24
Speaker
Oh yeah, we see that. Haku takes away his, that was his body and they're like, what's he doing that? And he's got the Ambu or the medical ninja mask. And we find out that the bodies of ninja can be dissected and you can figure out how their body works. And you can sometimes figure out, like, especially at the Keke Genkai, you can figure out how that works. And so you can learn a lot of information from the body of a dead ninja. So all the villages have their own medical team that goes out and dissects ninjas.
00:33:54
Speaker
Yeah, well, like retrieves bodies of rogue ninjas that way foreign villages can't use it against them in the future. Gotcha. Yeah, it's more of like a burn the evidence type squad, the cleaners. Yeah, I think that does it for the first Zabuza encounter.
00:34:12
Speaker
Because I called it. He wasn't actually dead. Correct. It's almost like I'd seen it before. Because I remember. Well, I remember while we were watching it, we finished up this episode and I was like, damn, I remember that fight taking a lot longer. And I feel like it was on a bridge. Yes. And I was like, wait a minute. He's not actually the next fight. And that's the one that is going to take 35 fucking years to watch. No.
00:34:41
Speaker
It'll feel like it. Now that you're allowed to be paying attention, there is some cool shit to see that I think that you missed. And I think that's part of the reason why you fell out of it, because I'm glad you used to fell out of it as opposed to gave up so fucking fast. Yeah, that one.
00:35:04
Speaker
Allegedly. The other guy, Unknown Source. Allegedly, yes. But yeah, I'll be interested to have you actually watch that for this, for getting your reaction on that and you being like, Oh, because I think it's going to be a little bit more of that going on as opposed to how it is now with a just do the thing, stop talking. I think that that'll be an interesting progression because we do get a little bit more of sort of like the Sasuke embodies a little bit more like Fushiguro.
00:35:33
Speaker
and a whole bunch of that other stuff that comes up in the next. Now, would you say he embodies a little more fushiguro? Does that mean he's ready to kill himself or he wants to kill himself or he actually like make friends angsty or, you know,

Training Arc: Pushing Limits

00:35:49
Speaker
put putting his I don't want to spoil shit. That's the thing.
00:35:53
Speaker
I would love it if you did. And the listeners have probably already seen the show. You see a little bit more humanity. OK, I'll I'll accept that as a non-spoiler spoiler. We got a little bit of it during like the the Forest of Chakra thing where they're training in the trees where Sasuke has that moment with Naruto's like, Hey, what did that what? What does it tell you? And it's like, Oh, he is human. Look at him. We get a little bit more of that. And Naruto's just like get bent. Fuck. Yeah.
00:36:22
Speaker
the sex to sex group. Yeah, so I'm glad we at least get some evolution out of him eventually. Yeah, everybody else has a natural like growth progression, I guess, Sakura gets less. What's the useless? Yeah. And Naruto doesn't become deer in the headlights and actually learns how to
00:36:43
Speaker
you know do things but i felt like they were just gonna keep sasuke as the token depressed kid yeah no there's a lot of the thing that i really like about naruto is how well they show growth a lot of the characters do not stay just one note throughout everything gotcha which is great because also i mean you would hope that they would grow over like 750 episodes
00:37:05
Speaker
Yeah, if they didn't then then there wouldn't be regarded as one of the big three. Correct. You know, there is a reason for that, which also when we get to my hero down the line, whenever we start watching that, one of my favorite things that they do is also showing the growth.
00:37:24
Speaker
Over time as well and just constantly pushing people forward which Naruto does my hero does that a very much Faster pace being newer Jan as opposed to this which came out, you know, like 20 years ago, but yeah, it's really good Yeah, sorry for more. I'll take your I'm not but I'll take your word first I'm excited for you to be like, you know what? They are sort of doing that. I Will be long gone, sir
00:37:51
Speaker
Long gone before I say that hey, no, you'll be here. It'll be good and you'll all be with us The amount of like messages that I'm gonna get from from people after these first two episodes drop And they're like, are you fucking serious? Yeah
00:38:11
Speaker
I'm excited for people to comment on your takes, to be like, are you kidding? Real? Oh, I'm 100% expecting, like, hey, man, found you guys through your Naruto watch. I've really been enjoying what you guys have been saying. Not really, because what the fuck is wrong with you?
00:38:33
Speaker
Yeah. You think what? I'm just going to be like, and I maintain it. You can't change my mind. I'm putting my foot down and I will pout. Yep. And then we'll watch more Naruto and you'll be like, hmm, maybe. I mean, I don't know what to tell you, man. Naruto is just such a good fucking show. It really is.
00:38:55
Speaker
All righty, but getting back to the show, I'll toss it over to you for going through the rest of it with your favorite people. Yeah, I love these people so much because we do have so we do have the Forest of Chakra, which we get to see Kakashi just like super casually. I almost called him Gojo get to super casually just walk up a tree. Mm hmm.
00:39:16
Speaker
And everyone's like, well, I know we could do that. And he's like, all you got to do is focus your chakra and you'll be able to do what I did. So he's got them running up doing like the shit with the knife where it's like mark as high as you can get. Yes. And once again, I almost call the fish a girl.
00:39:35
Speaker
Sasuke and Naruto I don't know what the deal is with them like Naruto is a literal nothing So I don't know why Sasuke cares so much about being better than him like he's a literal who because Naruto calls out Sasuke
00:39:50
Speaker
Yeah, but like, OK, here's the thing. I think it's more like I have to put him back in his place type thing. If I'm walking past a basketball court and a 10 year old who's like four foot nine is like, I'm better than you. I am not giving that child the time of day, let alone going in there being like, you know what? One on one. Let's go. I don't give a shit. So why does Sasuke? Sasuke is better than I am. So why?
00:40:20
Speaker
Why is he giving the guy who's worse than me any consideration? I don't get it. He has a complex. So he has his brother where he needs to get as strong as possible in order to kill his older brother. That is his through line. And so if somebody is saying that he's not strong and calling him out, that's going to strike a chord with him. So that is he eventually kill his older brother. I'm not going to tell you that.
00:40:44
Speaker
I was hoping you'd slip. I was waiting for like. Yeah, of course. And just simply fuck off. No, oddly enough, Sakura actually does something. Yeah. And succeeds in the task. Mm hmm.
00:41:05
Speaker
And then she gets to leave. Yeah. But then it was like, hey, um, so what did what did you do? But don't let Sasuke here because I need to be better than him. But I don't at least it's kind of a teamwork thing. Yeah, no, I mean, yes, yes. In a way, it's not the full team cooperating, but there is teamwork going on. Right.
00:41:29
Speaker
No, and you like you have that moment with Sakura's inner monologue where she's like, not just who's going to, you know, throw a fit and give up. And then he does throw a fit, but then he doesn't give up. And instead he goes to her for help. And Kakashi sees this and he's like, oh, if he's going to lean on his friends, there's no telling how far he can go and how far he can grow. Again, growth. Yeah. So like a tumor is right on you. It's going to grow right on your heart. Be perfect. Oh, God. No, the.
00:41:59
Speaker

00:43:18
Speaker
And we get to see that angsty little fuck whose name is escaping me at the moment.

Inari's Backstory and Motivation

00:43:24
Speaker
Ari and Ari. That's right. I hate that kid. I really do. Fuck, this kid sucks. That is what you said during the watch through that. Can I hear it one more time? Fuck, this kid sucks. Yeah. I really said all I need to say right there. Yeah.
00:43:47
Speaker
God, he's fucking useless. He's like, oh, my God, you're a loser. You're such a loser. And then he goes and cries in his fucking window like what? So like a loser. So what I said earlier about the characters not saying one note. That's the main characters. A lot of the characters are just one note.
00:44:13
Speaker
And his my one note for him is be written off the fucking show. But oh, my God. And then because. Sakura, who can't read a room. Yep. Sitting at dinner, having having their munch and all that. And she's like, oh, there's a picture on the wall. She's standing on the furniture.
00:44:39
Speaker
And it's like, it looks like somebody got ripped out of this photo. Anybody want to tell me what happened? Because, you know, when you're visiting someone's house and you see somebody ripped out of the photo, the best thing that you can do is bring attention to it. Yeah. Yeah. You know, I noticed you're trying to remove. Fuck it. Yeah.
00:44:59
Speaker
I know you tried to remove this person from this, but why don't you tell me everything about them? That'd be really cool. Yeah, crazy. But Inari throws a goddamn tantrum and then leaves. And this is all I like how this is all occurring while Naruto and Sasuke are like shoveling down their food to the point where they yak.
00:45:17
Speaker
Yeah, like they didn't yarf. They act. Yes. But I'm like, dude, just eat like a normal fucking person. Pretend it's ramen. You know, figure it out. Figure it the fuck out. Then we get my favorite episode so far that I've seen.
00:45:37
Speaker
We get the completely unnecessary backstory for an entire episode of Anari's stepdad. Yeah, he's like, oh, there comes a time to be a hero and I will carry this town with both of my arms and fucking to care about something protected with both arms.
00:45:58
Speaker
Yeah, I wonder how that worked for him. Yeah, that's why they broke his arms. Yeah. And they crucified him. Yep. Just in time for Easter. Hell yeah. Oh boy.
00:46:10
Speaker
Oh boy, but I'm like Jesus, he did not come back. Nah, he didn't. He stayed dead. Um, we see him like dive into water to like save the village. They're like, who could possibly do this? And he's like, I can do it. It's me. It's me. I am here.
00:46:29
Speaker
And he dives in, he swims across and ties a fucking rope that's like a levee, stops the village from getting flooded. And he's like, oh, my God, he's the greatest person ever. He's my hero. Oh, that's right, because they tried to drown a puppy. Yep. In this episode, I forgot my brain. Blocked that out once more. Yeah, the bullies took Inari's dog, threw it off the dock and then said, go save it if you care so much about it. And then he was like, I want to. I don't know how to swim. I'm scared.
00:46:58
Speaker
And they're like, oh, we'll go fucking save it. And then they push him in and then he starts drowning. And then that's where an Aries stepdad comes into the fray. Yeah, which like I don't understand that because like the bullies are like they're evil. But like like I'm currently doing a run in Baldur's Gate where I'm evil. And I just got to scratch. Yeah, the dog. And no, I pet the dog and invited him back to my camp. Just because you're evil doesn't mean you have to be mean to animals.
00:47:29
Speaker
Like, I'll be a dick to anybody at any time and it's a lot of fun. However, I'm going to pet a dog. Yes, have to. Like, I'm not going to be mean to critters. Critters are too innocent. They're too good.
00:47:45
Speaker
Right. So I don't know why these assholes felt the need to just eat the dog into the water. They could have just shoved an Ari in and called it a day. They could have, but they didn't. What are they? He's like, I'm renaming the dog to like, what was it, like fucking firework or something like Starcatcher or something like that. Star shooting star or something. Yeah, there we are. And I'm like, bro, OK, that's the dumbest fucking name you could have come up with, but that's fine. I get it. You're like eight. But
00:48:11
Speaker
God, but yeah, we get Elgato smashing the arms of Inari's stepdad. Yeah. And then executing him while he's crucified by I think just gutting him. Yeah, something like that. Dude with a Katana just like he's like, do it. And they just cut still a bunch of blood splash. I'm assuming that they chopped off his head. I was going to go with they opened up his stomach.
00:48:36
Speaker
But yeah, I'm going with decapitation, which also, by the way, I hate to interrupt, but Kaiser, who is an Arie's stepdad, also Cubot from Sonic, voiced by Wally Wingert. Wally Wingert? Yep, that's a name. That's my family name and real life. Yeah.
00:49:02
Speaker
That is Emile Egbert. And then since we've sort of touched on them, but we haven't actually really talked about them. Inari, voiced by Mona Marshall, also alliteration as well, still voice acting. Actually voice acts a lot for a very, very, very, very, very popular animated show. Family Guy. No, but in that realm, but faster. American Dad? Nope.
00:49:31
Speaker
South Park in that round. Oh, yeah. And has voiced other characters such as, you know, Kyle, his mom, Miss Bravlosky, also went free. Paris Hilton, Hillary Clinton, Bart Simpson and Wonder Woman, among many others as well. Oh, my God.
00:49:54
Speaker
Shout out to Inari. Wow. Honestly, that is that is very impressive. Yeah. And then Inari's mom, Tsunami, is Cindy Robinson, who voices Amy, which is the pink bitch from Sonic and Sonic. Yeah. And then also throwing it back to the beginning of this, the lady who gets her cat back that they were going on.
00:50:24
Speaker
I would like to point out she also did a voice in Marvel pinball. Yep. So she is also a Marvel person of sorts. I thought there's so many iterations of Marvel stuff like them out of Marvel games and Marvel shows and stuff that's out there. If you're voice acting and you've gotten semi established, then you have something you have. Isn't isn't Ichigo like the main person in Bleach?
00:50:50
Speaker
Mm hmm. Are you looking at Johnny and Bosch? No, she voiced a young each ago. Oh, why are you looking at voice actor shit? Because I her name was familiar. I thought she did live action, too. I heard and thought I knew her name from a live action thing. Heard. OK. The bleach one came out in the same time frame that I thought she was in the. I heard that. I'm not cheating. I promise. Uh huh.
00:51:15
Speaker
Sure. I have never once cheated in, I guess, that voice actor. Yeah. Not one time. Never. Not once. No, really not. I haven't. Oh, yeah. No, I believe you. You don't sound like you believe me. I believe you.
00:51:32
Speaker
See, there's this inflection in your voice when you say I believe you. If you actually look at when you said I believe you in the recording, you'll notice a spike in the middle. That's where your sarcastic fucking tone came in. And I don't appreciate that. Hey, believe it. We're stupid. I love it. Hey, if I was if I was cheating, I would have at least gotten one right.
00:51:57
Speaker
Yeah, I think you got one right. Did I? Yep, exposed right there. I don't even remember. I felt like I remember getting it right, but OK, fuck it. Yeah, it was a blue lock person. You guessed right. Sure. Moving on. Yeah, we get that. I mean, what it your. OK, this is your like fucking sixth time watching this show. Yeah. Which means it's probably your.
00:52:20
Speaker
Fourth or third time watching this episode because I feel like you skip it. Mmm Skips through yeah, what is your opinion on this episode as somebody who has seen the entire show?
00:52:32
Speaker
Oh, I like it for the dynamic in between Sasuke and Naruto. And you start seeing that rivalry like actually popping up where it's the first time that Sasuke sort of acknowledges Naruto is like improving. He doesn't say anything to him, but you get that inner monologue like, oh, God, he's catching up to me. I got to do better. That sort of sparks that rivalry where they push each other to get better. I like that part of it. The rest, however, don't really care about the whole shit with an Ari. Find him annoying. Like, OK.
00:53:02
Speaker
You can tell me if it's a spoiler or not. Do we ever see Inari again? Um, a lot of the side characters come back. OK. Like way down the line. I don't know. Eventually see him again. I think so. I can't remember if we see Inari again. I don't think we do. Or if we do, it's a slightly aged up Inari. Gotcha. So probably or at least hopefully not a worthless little shit anymore. Probably not. Gotcha. Yes.
00:53:32
Speaker
Because down the line, there is a return trip to this village. Cool.
00:53:39
Speaker
So not going to lie, this is where the show was kind of putting me to sleep. Does anything else happen in the rest of this episode? No, no, no, no. It ends with that. And they're like, all right, cool. And then everyone's like, I got to take it easy today so you don't get too tired. And Arto's like, no, I'm going to prove to Inari that heroes do exist and I'm going to push beyond my limits, become a black bull. And we're going to nail it. Sounds like you nailed it right there. Yep.
00:54:07
Speaker
And that's the episode. Naruto goes back to training in the forest. Yeah, it's chocolate control. Are we done talking about the show?
00:54:16
Speaker
I believe so. I believe that's it. God. And that brings us to the end of the shit. Oh, couldn't be happier. So next week, you know, you could be happier because this week we watch six next week. We've made the decision to cover more. We didn't make the decision. You know, I okayed it, but you're the one who divvies up the episodes. I okayed it because I don't know better. Yeah.
00:54:44
Speaker
Next week, we will be watching episodes 12 through 19, a total of eight episodes. This will cover all of the bridge battle. So that way it's not like oddly broken up or whatever for us. And yeah.
00:55:00
Speaker
It'll be fun. It'll be good. Fun is not the word. Listen, there is some cool stuff that happens during this. OK, it can't be that cool because they're fighting one dude and they're the main characters. That means in that entire cluster of eight episodes, though, the balance may shift back and forth a little bit. There is no outcome for eight episodes. You really.
00:55:26
Speaker
don't remember watching this, do you? Not even fucking close. OK, that's what I thought. I rest my case until the next episode. I remember like little bits and pieces, but I'll be honest, I have blocked out a majority, if not everything from Naruto. Yeah, I feel like from here on, you remember maybe like the next one or two episodes and then after that you just sort of block it.
00:55:54
Speaker
I remember a little bit of shit with Haku. I know he talks to Naruto at some point while he's standing up in a tree or some shit.
00:56:10
Speaker
Fuck, but yeah, we'll get to, you know, brushing you up on some things that you have forgotten about. And mostly because the stuff that you had checked out for and like already started writing the show off is, I feel like, and most people will attest to this,
00:56:27
Speaker
I feel like that is the stuff that sort of gets you interested in the show going forward, but you weren't paying attention and you were already checked out from the series. So that's why I think that you fell off rapidly after. So our group chat one time in which has a lot of weaves. Yes. Somebody sent a picture with a bunch of pictures of the main characters from various animes.
00:56:55
Speaker
Uh-huh. And the list, it was a list of how many episodes it takes for you to get into the show on average. Yeah. Naruto was two. Yeah, two is two is wrong. I feel like it is when stuff starts popping off on the bridge for a lot of people. OK. Because I understand that it has been a lot of like get to know the characters establishing the expositionary stuff.
00:57:23
Speaker
You got it. You got to realize like we just finished episode what? Eleven. Eleven. By this point in J.J.K., we had already had the entirety of the June pay arc. Yes. By this time in Attack on Titan, they were already, I mean, way out of basic. I'm pretty sure they were still in the battle for trust. Uh, most likely. The pacing is so bad.
00:57:51
Speaker
So, again, this is an old gen. This is not new gen. So it does take longer attack on Titan, not be considered old gen. No, it's been coming out for a while, but it is not old gen. It started in like 2012, though I would call that relatively old. I mean, I mean, not like Trigon in the 90s, but like so you can literally see it in the animation.
00:58:14
Speaker
But that's there. Yeah, it is a very. There is a very distinct audience. Advanced. Yeah. Yeah. That's I'll give you that. Like I'm not. I'm not excited. You said that it started coming out what in 2012 or 2008 or whatever. When attack on Titan. Yeah, I think was like 2012. I might be wrong.
00:58:34
Speaker
this show started coming out in Japan 2002 2002 10 years prior so yeah that's pacing pacing the animation style you'll like notice it as well uh just like if you've ever seen shows when they're starting up usually the background characters are just still sometimes they're not even like they're not even in detail or anything
00:58:59
Speaker
And then as the show grows in popularity and they get more funding than everyone in the background moves and stuff like that you'll see the progression of that throughout this show to where attention to detail starts mattering more as you know voice acting or anime and stuff like that becomes more popular in the states as well then you start seeing more attention to detail popping up in the shows and.

You can see that evolution over time through Naruto because it is so long running, right? Yeah, but it's still even to this day like they animate the stuff and everything in the background, but the animation is crisper and it is so much cleaner, but it still has that same I can look through beyond the voice actor and then I can tell without even looking at the title, like if that character is going to be from Naruto just based off of the art style. Oh,

from anime playing in the background while they do some of their sets because they're like, Oh yeah, this inspires and gives me these vibes and stuff like that. Uh, and most of their concert shirts are anime inspired. Like they have demon Slayer, they have my hero, they have a whole like attack on Titan. And so yeah, if their music isn't exactly like anime style or anything like that, but they are themselves weaves. So shout out to them. There is a lot of crossover between metal core and anime.
