And we're going to talk today about bedroom stewardship.
What is Bedroom Stewardship?

So I'm sure you all have some space that is yours, a bedroom, whether it's shared or your own.

And probably you have some responsibilities to keep it clean. So what we're focusing on is why we do that, how we do that, and does the Bible have anything to say about that because sometimes we might think, well, I've never seen a section in the Bible that's titled Bedrooms. And so we think maybe that scripture doesn't speak to it and that God doesn't care. But there are so many things we can find in the Bible that can help us with this. And that's what Addie and Ellery are going to help me talk about today.

um But first, I kind of wanted to explain what I mean um when I'm going to be talking about biblical commands and biblical

principles. So While there isn't a commandment in the Bible that says, thou shalt keep your room clean, there are many principles about how we should live and ways of living that are beneficial to us. And so we can take those principles and apply them to all areas of our life, even cleaning our bedroom.

And then we're also um maybe thinking, oh well, it's not a sin if I don't clean my room. So the other concepts we just wanted to introduce before we started were the concepts of sins of commission, which is a sin where you're doing something you shouldn't do, and a sin of omission, which is where you're not doing something that you really should do. So we're going to talk about some of those things. You might hear those terms come up.

So the first thing we're going to talk about is why it matters. Does cleaning our room matter? Is there a biblical reason to steward our bedrooms and what does maybe even stewardship mean. So Addie's going to start and she's going to tell us some things that she's discovered.

So for why does caring for your bedroom matter? So one, you should take care of the things God has given you. And I feel like I always feel more relaxed and calm when my bedroom is clean.

And I like hanging out way more than when everything's put away and nice and tidy. That's awesome. Yeah, definitely taking care of the things God gives us. That's what stewardship is. And the Bible talks about that a lot, actually. um And even in the beginning, in Genesis 2.15, it talks about how God took man, he put him in the garden to work it and keep it. So even from the very beginning, God gave us gifts and then asks us to take care of it.

um And it's so true that when we do the things God says and follow his plan, it often blesses us. So that's a great point. What about you, Ellery? Why does caring for your bedroom matter?

Well, it matters because you live in that room and you sleep in that room. And a lot of the things you do when you're a teenager or a tween is in your bedroom, like writing letters, reading books, or hanging out, having sleepovers and things like that. That's true. So it does matter that it's clean and it's not just tons of stuff everywhere. So you can't walk through it.

That's a great point. Yeah. de I definitely agree with all of that. Um, And we'll get into some of those things you mentioned. You mentioned some things that I want to talk about, Ellery. But first, when we're thinking about biblical commands versus biblical principles that could inspire us or encourage us to work on taking care of our rooms, can you either of you think of a command from the Bible?

That would relate. I can think of one. um Obey your parents and the Lord, for this is right. So if your parents ask you to clean your bedroom, it should matter because you have to obey parents.

Exactly. That's perfect. That's exactly what I was going for. I'm so glad you had that on your paper. um Yes. So if you are expected to keep your room clean, then it actually is obeying command to do it, to keep it clean, not just a principle.

um I can think of lots of principles also, things from the Bible and that we're encouraged to do or examples that should encourage us to live out those principles through how we take care of our room. Can you think of any,

Yeah, in the New Testament, Jesus tells a story about a woman who loses a coin and she searches and searches for it. But only after she cleans her house does she find it. Oh my word, that's so good.

So, I mean, I'm sure some of you have lost things. You can't find, have you ever lost something? Yeah, I have too. And you can't find and you waste all this time looking for it And you could maybe be using that time for something else or maybe you really needed that thing to accomplish something.

And I think it's cool that God gives us these commands and principles that are really just practical. They just help us. They just make life easier. um Did you have any other principles? Do you have any like biblical principles or examples or things that you think?

You said one. i'll I'll help you. You said sleepovers. Yes. there I remember there was a time where we had kind of a spontaneous sleepover. We didn't have plans and we ended up having a sleepover. and we took that girl home with us from where we were with no time to go clean.

But i think you guys I think your room was already clean. Yeah, that was really nice because we actually enjoyed the sleepover a lot. And was really fun. And it wouldn't have been fun if we hadn't had our room.

tidy. I also might've said no, if I knew your room was a disaster. So the principle, the biblical principle, I would say that that goes along with is hospitality.

So we're actually commanded. We're told to be hospitable, to welcome people into our homes, to be giving towards others. And it's harder to do that if our spaces in our home are a disaster.

Because we might be embarrassed. We might not want to. And it just might not even work. There's nowhere for them to sleep. There's nowhere for them to sit down. There's no clean dishes. um We don't have any food in the house to cook. So taking care of our home and our spaces actually allows us to be more hospitable. And that's a good um quality that God wants us to have.

um So being a good steward, we talked about that. Obeying our parents, we talked about that. Not losing our things. I think also taking care of what we have because let's say your clothes all over the floor and you're stepping on them They might get ruined faster and then that costs money.

There's a lot of negative things with keeping your – if your room's a mess, you might even feel more stressed out, which could cause you to be angry. I know as a mom, sometimes if the house is a disaster, I'm more likely to be stressed out and then be unkind to people. So that's another one. I had a couple verses I wanted to share too. And if you guys have any thoughts that you want to add about them, let me know.

But Colossians 3, 23 tells us that whatever you do, you work heartily as for the Lord and not men. So it's a good reminder that taking care of our rooms and all the things in our rooms, it's not just for ourselves and for other people, but it's really for the Lord. And that's one way we can look at it when we're going about the business of taking care of our room.

Luke 12 gives a ah long story example about a faithful and wise manager. So that means you're being consistent and you're being wise with your things. You're taking care of them if you're managing them.

And then we have Proverbs. and You've maybe heard of the Proverbs 31 woman, which can apply to you as a Proverbs 31 teen or Proverbs 31 tween. um Proverbs 31 27 says she looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.

So you might say she looks well to the ways of her bedroom and does not eat the bread of idleness. So meaning you're being busy, you are taking care of things, you're doing what needs to be done and your bedroom is your household.

Right. Okay. So anything else you guys wanted to say kind of about the reasons why, or why you think it's like a godly attribute? i You know how we're supposed to be like, like Christ and being made more into the image.

yeah Um, So are there things that you know about God that would encourage us? Like, is he really chaotic and confusing? and No, very simple.

No, not simple. Well, he he is simple in that he's fully contained in who he is, but um he's a God of order and not a God of confusion and confusion and and not a God of disorder. And there's a lot of scripture that talks about that, actually. So that's an example for us as well.

For how we should be living. So, okay. So let's see. We'll just do a little review here. We said obedience to parents would be one thing. um It actually can save us time and energy to keep things not just clean, but organized.

And so there's different levels. There's like tidy. Things are put where they belong. There's clean, which might involve... vacuuming, scrubbing, things like that. um Dusting. Dusting, yeah. And then there's organized also, which might mean getting rid of things or finding the best way to store items. Getting rid of clutter.

Yeah. So there's lots of different things you can do in your bedroom to make it the best space possible for you and for others. Okay. So we talked about being hospitable. Oh, one more I was going to add, being a good steward. You did mention that, which means our things last longer, which blesses us, blesses our parents who are paying for Yeah. Your things. And then the last one was being available.

i was thinking about how much time it saves when you just kind of keep your room clean. So then you're available for other opportunities. Like today, Adi, what job did you go do?

um I was being a mother's helper at this lady's house, you know, and it was kind of, had to make my room clean beforehand, but it was already kind of clean because yeah i like to clean it before I go to sleep. So it wasn't too hard and yeah i was able to do it time.

And it was right during the middle of the school day. But because I know that Addy's gotten into some good habits of keeping her room clean and doing her school and and taking care of things, I knew that she'd probably have it done beforehand. It wouldn't be crazy. Or she would be able to do it afterward pretty quickly. So it made her available to actually go bless somebody else.

And actually, she was organizing her room. That's what she was doing. That's kind of cool. And you probably also made some money. Oh yeah, I did. Okay. that's, you have availability, maybe for more fun, maybe for service, for other things. So there's just many good things that come out of keeping a room clean, including, which what we're going to get into is just enjoying it, enjoying the space.

um And we mentioned all the tidying, deep cleaning, organizing.
Tips for Maintaining Cleanliness

We didn't get into beautifying, but that's another one. Decorating, that's another aspect. So what we're going to discuss now, and this is going to be mostly from tips and Tricks and advice, mostly from the girls, I think, because I do things one way. I might pop in here a bit, but they have gotten some methods. And what's really interesting, I'll share with you guys, is that Addie is a little more naturally interested in organizing.

And Ellery, are you? No. No, not as much. You do like it organized, though. I like it organized, but I don't like to organize. Exactly. So we have two different personalities here, yeah two different kind of levels of ability here. And that way we can kind of talk to both types of people. yeah And we talked last week about identity, right? So there are two different types of people, but they both need to honor the Lord with their bedroom.

And, um... live like Christians with their room. So Adi, go ahead and start with your tick your tips and tricks. Okay. So one thing I do is when I wake up, when I get dressed and all of those things, I always like to clean my bedroom in the morning so that it's all ready for the day.

And then and the evening, right before I go to bed where I'm getting in my pajamas and all of that stuff, I'll also take the time to clean my bedroom again. And during the day, if I just feel like it or if I need to, I'll clean my room.

And so it's kind of just nice. And sometimes I'm like want to read and I feel like I can't without it being clean. And so I just clean it. and kind of like what mom was saying, that maintaining cleanness can help you to be ready for any unexpected thing that could happen, like having a play date or someone coming over or you going over to someone's house because it's always good to be ready.

And yeah, I am good at being organized and stuff. And so sometimes I'll just organize my for my sister because I love doing it. So when you say cleaning, like in the morning and in the evening and maybe here and there throughout the day, is that more the tidying type of cleaning?

So you're kind of trying to maintain a certain level, yeah which actually would then make it easier to deep clean yeah because it would already be ready. The surfaces would be clean. So that's a great idea to just kind of, it never gets to the point where it would take you hours or anything like that. um Okay. Ellery, do you have some tips or advice, even if it's things you're not good at, but you know that when you do it, it helps you.

What would you say? um A few things that I do is I clean the room in sections where I mark off a section and clean that section and then mark off another until the room's all done.

And also sometimes we have a camera I'll take before and after pictures. and Yeah, I think having ways to motivate yourself is really good. Like Addy said, she knows she wants to read a book, but she'll enjoy it more if it's clean. And you're saying you're dividing it into smaller chunks so you don't feel overwhelmed.

And then even the picture so you can be reminded, oh, look how great it looks and look what it was. And I was able to do it. It's not. It's always fun. Yeah. And it's not as bad as you think half the time. And so sometimes taking a picture can help you with that.

Okay, any other advice, and especially you, Adi, because you organize a lot, any advice for organization or ways to make it easier to clean by how you organize things? Well, when you organize, it just kind of helps it, like for an example, your clothes.

Like if you're in a rush in the morning and you like open your clothes drawer and it's just a jumble and you can't like find what you need, you might get late or something else. And so I always like to have mine organized and I actually organized mine by color, which is fun.

And i just feel like if you opened it and everything was folded neatly, you could find what you need so much easier. And why I have mine in color because I know like what color i want to wear, what color will go with one of the pieces I have, and then just go to that color and find something I want from there.

And so that's kind of helpful for me. I think that's a great idea. I have my clothes organized, but I have them organized more by, um i guess you could say weather, like all my sweatshirts are together and then my long sleeves and then my short sleeves.

So it does make it a little quicker for me to do it that way. um But yes, it's nice to be able to get ready quickly. I agree with that. um Any organization things that help you to keep it clean, Ellery, or to make it less stressful?

Yeah. Just not like letting it get dirty once it is clean. And also when it is very dirty, I just always put it off so long.

And then when I do it, it feels so good. And then have it you wonder why why you put it off? Yeah, I'm like, why did I not do this? I could have done this two weeks ago. Exactly. I do the same thing sometimes. And usually the job is never as bad as you think if you just buckle down and do it.

um And then sometimes you could maybe listen to music. Yeah. Or something while you're playing audiobooks. Podcasts. Or podcasts. Yes. Like this one. Yes. Those are all great ideas. I also think one thing that we do is we regularly get rid of things.

So we'll we'll say, hey, it might be time to check under your beds. It might be time to go through your closets and get rid of things we don't need because it's kind of silly to have stuff that you need to clean up that you don't need or want. Yeah, I think so. doing that regularly keeps it from being too stressful, would you say?

i think we did that actually this Saturday. We went through bunch of our stuff, found out what we needed, what we didn't need, and it just helped it to be a lot more clear. Yeah. We were kind of going through clothes because the seasons are changing. Mm-hmm. So – and – you know, girls grow a lot. So every once in a while,

Am I organizing these clothes over and over that I'm not even wearing? Do I even like them? So we try to go through every once in a while and get rid of papers or clothing or just knickknacks, things that we don't need.

um We don't always do a huge day of it, but we just sometimes I'll even stick a little garbage bag in and say, hey if you find anything you don't want, it can go in here. um And I think doing it bit by bit is helpful. So yeah any other thoughts about even whether it's deep cleaning, tidying, organizing, or just encouragement for other girls that you would give them?

Well, We didn't talk about decorating either. Oh, yeah. One thing like to do for decorating is I have a bulletin board. And every season that switches, like this time it was fall, I'll put up like maybe a picture of leaves or put in like pins are like red, gold, and orange colors and stuff.

Or decorate my nightstand and they'll fallish. And I like to do that just at the beginning of the season. I also have magazines i'd change out from like different seasons. And it's really fun.

it kind of makes me anticipate the next season are there any ways that you like to beautify the space ellery uh yeah i don't usually do most of the decorating but when i do it's mostly like i like to put flowers sometimes and my jurisdiction that we clean of the room that i clean is the bathroom and i like to have a bouquet of fall flowers or grass or leaves or something. That would maybe be another tip is that if you save your beautifying or decorating towards the end, that's kind of like something you can look forward to once it's clean. Yeah, reward. I do that with myself. Sometimes I make myself wait um and add the pretty things at the end. And another

attribute of or fact even that we know about God is that he made a beautiful world so he cares about beauty um and we can you know enjoy him think about him when we're making ah beautiful space in our rooms well sometimes when have some free time i like to take a bike ride down the road and just collect some plants I find and that makes a beautiful bouquet too yep and it's free Yeah. As long as you're not climbing into people's yards. Yeah. We don't do that. Something like on the side of the road. Yeah. Like foraging. Uh-huh. One thing I forgot to mention that might be good to share on here. So Addie and Ellery share room.

Yeah. So for many years, actually, they shared a room with all their sisters. There were five of them in one room. And it was super tiny. And it was very tiny. So they had to learn how to work together to keep it clean, how to organize it, how to keep their own special spaces, um even though they were sharing.

So Adi and I'll share now. Is there any encouragement or or things that you sometimes maybe struggle with that you've learn to figure out as you share a room because you have different personalities and different preferences well I feel like sometimes the stuff like gets all over the room and for a while we used to always get mad at each other about that that like your stuff's like by my bed and so I feel like when I'm cleaning the room and she's not I'll just kind of move her stuff near her bed and then she'll go to that and then just put that away I andton

I used to toss it on her bed, but she did not like that. So now I sit at the end of her bed all nicely and then she'll put that away. I was going to say, I remember when you used to throw it on her bed and Ellery would get really frustrated by that because nobody likes a messy looking bed. I think they say if you, if you make your bed, it makes your room look 80% cleaner. Yes, because it's probably the biggest thing in your room. Yeah. So it was more stressful for her when you put it on her bed. But now when it's at the foot of the bed, it's kind of like you said you divide your room into chunks, Ellery. So it's kind of like, here's my chunk and I just need to clean it. So um That was something you guys learned to work through. Is there anything else, Ellery, that you feel like you guys have to try to work on when you share a room?

That's a good advice for other people who share rooms? Sharing the decorating part, that's like probably the funnest part of the room. and I usually don't do it.

I guess Addy isn't really the best at sharing it, but try to tell her that I'd like to do it sometimes. I think sometimes Addy thinks about it first too, and she starts doing it, and it's not on your mind as much, but then when you see someone else doing it, then you get inspired.

Kind of like how you like the room being organized, but you don't always want to organize it. So yeah, I think talking with each other and trying to, you could even work out a schedule or you could talk, maybe you have different ideas of what a clean room is. You might need to talk about it and say, here's kind of the level of clean I feel comfortable with.

And you can work out a plan or a system or, and if you need to have your mom there to help you discuss it and come up with what you guys think is fair. Um, I think that that's good. And obviously there's biblical principles we can apply to that, like loving others, putting others before yourself. So We can apply that to sharing ah room as well. And maybe even if you're going to, you know, some people will go on and totally redo their room. You might have to plan it together so that everybody gets something that they like.

Mm-hmm. Well, I think like it's also nice sharing room with his sister because for Ellery, sometimes she's like, I really want to organize my closet, but it just is so like, I don't want to do it.

And so I'll be like, I'll do it And once she actually paid me to organize her whole closet. And recently she was going to youth group and I wasn't. And I just organized her whole closet, put everything away, made her bed, got her all it all nice. And she came back and was so happy. And I love doing that for people.

Yeah. Yeah. And I think that that's a cool thing about sharing the room too, is you both have different gifts and different abilities and you can, use those to help each other in that space, which is really great practice for someday when you maybe have roommates or your own home, or maybe you're married, or, you know, even if you're living with your parents and you're helping in other spaces in the house, you kind of are practicing in your room.

um You know, you might even be like, I know out of you look forward to the idea of maybe having your own home someday.

um But if you aren't willing to learn now and do it in your room, you're probably not going magically grow up and just be yeah amazing at it, right? to think I could.

So it's good to start practicing now, practicing helping others and serving each other and doing it with the right heart because we could do it with the wrong heart and just think, well, my room's amazing or, well, I'm the best or, well, I keep it so clean so I'm so great or I'm better than other people.

And we don't want to do that. We want to do it as unto the Lord, like the Bible says, and to bless others and just because it's good also for ourselves. Yes. I think we also might have a podcast on organizing specifically. Yes, we might. Because Addy loves to organize. She actually has a business and she has gone and helped people organize.

Maybe you want to ask your mom to kind of help you out and get you on a good rhythm. Maybe setting a timer for certain times or days or saying, you know, on Mondays I'm going to do this and on Tuesdays I'm going to do this. There's so many different ways and they can all work with your different um personalities, preferences, abilities. So think about it and come up with a plan.

Well, one thing that really inspires me for cleaning my room is like maybe mom will show me like a video of somebody's bedroom and I get super inspired and then I clean my bedroom and then I kind of like like make it like pretty.

Yes. like it or watching. And we don't do that a lot, but every once in a while we'll watch something or listen to something about homemaking or organizing. And it is inspiring. And it kind of reminds me of like Titus 2 where the older women are supposed to teach the younger Um, it's just that we're using like a video of someone who's maybe skilled in a certain area. I don't know if you girls remember when you were little and we watched videos on how to fold.

yeah And it was really inspiring. And then they would go fold everything really well for a while. So it's kind of like seeing someone else, seeing another person who does something very well can encourage us and motivate us, maybe convict us if we need to be convicted because we haven't been taking care of things.

um and And then we can go forward and say like, you know what? Yes, i I want to work on that better. And now I see some examples or some tools or some ways I can do it. So as the body of Christ, we are meant to encourage each other in those things. And we want to encourage you.

in Christ. We want to encourage you to work on your bedrooms, to consider all the wonderful ways um that God has made it be a blessing to you and to others. Just the gift that your room is to be grateful for it, to use even your bedroom for God's glory um so i think we'll end with i wanted to ask let's see we've done like a book recommendation and we've done a book music recommendation so was thinking what about a recommendation we have some magazines that we like so addy's gonna tell you the title and ellery might tell a title of one bloom wild girls magazine wait it's not called boom wild girls yes it is really it wildflower girls

a really good one with, like, stories from other girls. and And these are both Christian magazines. Yeah, and Wildflower Girls has, like, coloring pictures, book recommendations, yeah like, little written stories by people. And you can submit.

Yeah, crafts. You can submit poems. Recipes. yeah Yeah, it's so fun. Good. And the girls like you, i think, actually, the fun thing is that um it's a family of girls. Right? That kind of produces the magazine as well. Yeah, there four sisters, and their mom died, and they and she was like very good at all that stuff.

I think she started that, and they just kept it going. Yeah, yeah. So both of those have been encouraging and inspiring for Addie and Ellery. And another one for kind of maybe older girls is the Above Rubies magazine, which I really enjoy. More about, like, inspiring stories about women and families.

Mm-hmm. Oh yeah. Another one for teenagers is the Brio magazine. My mom writes articles in there sometimes. Yes. So we'll get like 20 copies and I'll give them to all my friends.
