Speaker
What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about why you should be choosing words to describe what you want your pottery to look like.
Insights from Kristin Kiefer on Descriptive Words
00:00:27
Speaker
You see, I just had a really great conversation with Kristin Kiefer. And in this conversation, one of the things that Kristin has done, and she encourages people to do when she is teaching workshops, is she says to choose a word for what you want your pottery to look like, right? In this example, she said when she first discovered this, she said that she wanted her pottery to look eloquent.
The Role of Descriptive Words in Pottery Design

Speaker
And that that was her goal to make her potty look eloquent. And then as she continued evolving, she wanted to bring more joy and happiness into her and play into her pottery. And you see, and I think it's really, really important to choose a word for your pottery because it's going to help you discover your voice a lot. And why do I think that it's going to help you discover your voice? Well, you see,
00:01:19
Speaker
If you're able to choose a word for your pottery, then you kind of have an idea of what you want your pottery to look like, right? It makes you have a standard for your pottery, a standard that you want to hit every single time with your pottery so that you can make that word come to life, that word or sentence come to life. And I think it is really important to help you discover your voice because if you're able to have a standard for your pottery, then you're going to know
00:01:45
Speaker
what you like and what you don't like with your pottery. And you're going to be able to see these things and you'll be able to continue doing the things that you like more. And simply by having and naming a word for your pottery, what you want your pottery to look like by naming that word, you're going to have a destination to go to, a destination to really see things from so that you are trying to hit that word, hit that standard for your pottery.
Selecting Words Based on Pottery Message and Style
00:02:11
Speaker
But now how do you choose a word for your pottery? Well,
00:02:16
Speaker
It basically comes down to really what you are trying to say with your pottery. So if you are making pottery that, I don't know, let's say it's very simple. You're only using glazes. The word
00:02:30
Speaker
for you could be simple. You want your pottery to be simple. And having that word is gonna allow you to make your pottery be simple because the more you try to add things in, you're gonna come back to that word and you're gonna say, is this pottery simple? Is this what I'm trying to make with my pottery? Is this pottery simple or not?
00:02:50
Speaker
and then it's going to allow you to shoot go a different direction depending on what you're trying to make because you have that word in mind right simple is that word if you're only trying to make simple pottery make glazes and that is just going to be simple make it simple because remember simple is beautiful and now another word that you could use is excitement maybe you want to add some excitement to your pottery

and then every single time you're making, maybe you're trying something new and you look at it and after it's done, you say, does this bring me excitement? Does this bring other people excitement? And if it's not a yes or no, or if it's not a yes, then you have to adjust. If it's a no, then you could keep it. I might've said that backwards, but you get what I'm saying. Basically that word is going to help you
00:03:42
Speaker
with the direction you're trying to go. And just pretty much just pick one word, make it simple. It could be excited, it could be joy, it could be, you know, hungry, maybe hungry is the word that you want. Like you have hunger, like not like food hunger, or maybe it could be food hunger, but you have hunger for like success or like to get better, or maybe your word is growth and make
00:04:07
Speaker
every single time you make pottery is that you are trying to grow as a potter. You're trying to grow your pottery, make it look better.
Guiding Pottery with Simplicity
