Milan vs Juventus: Supercoppa Italiana Highlights

00:00:05
Speaker
hello everybody and Welcome back to another postmach reaction podcast here on the italian football podcast it's the first post matchtch reaction pod of 2025 here on the Italian Football Podcast and we will be reacting to, ah I don't know how to describe this game really, um a game, a Supercoppa Italiana semifinal, which sends Milan pass Juva to play Inter in the final um of the 2024 Supercoppa Italiana after a comical Federico Gatti own goal um and a game that was
00:00:45
Speaker
that showed, I'd say, the weakness of both of these teams um at the same time.

Juventus's First Half Dominance and Milan's Struggles

00:00:53
Speaker
Starting with, as well as, you know, you could say their strengths as well, if we're perfectly honest, but if but above but above all, their deficiencies, especially if we look at, I mean, let's start with Juventus, who the first half Juventus were cruising. It was cruise control, it was calm, it was controlled.
00:01:11
Speaker
Milan looked flat, flatter than a pancake, um didn't create anything, had no real geist, had no energy, looked completely just uninterested. Many players looked very uninterested, except for maybe Christian Pulisic.
00:01:27
Speaker
um But where Juva, on the other hand, had that vibrant energy that we have seen this young Juva side do have, especially through Samuel M. Bangula and Kenan Yildis, who I think have shown and continue to show this season that the kids are alright at Juva. They are the ones that create and they are the ones that stand for the positive energy. the the the creativity whenever Juve create anything and Juve were rather comfortably in control after the first half um and and they didn't create lots of chances but they probably should have had at least one other goal. um The goal of course coming from Kenan Yildis who started when um
00:02:15
Speaker
Francisco Conceso picked up a knock on enduring warm-up and started instead of him and he showed again that Why I believe so much me, you know why myself and many others believe so much in him And that is that when he's given the chance he takes it he always takes the chance When when he's given it at this very young age whether it's as a substitute whether it's someone gets injured and he comes on He's got that mentality about him that he always rises to the occasion when called upon even when you know not starting or not supposed to start um i i i do want to give some credit to a lot of credit to wester mckinney as a left back i thought he was really good that and especially that first goal the like the the movement and an interchange with
00:03:01
Speaker
with M. Bangula, who decided to cut in and and overload the midfield, which completely confused Milan.

Milan's Second Half Revival and Turning Points

00:03:08
Speaker
And then a lovely, lovely pass for Yildis, with an even better finish, um showed that there is this Yuva side, showed the positive side of Yuva, in the sense that of of this young Yuva project, one of the youngest teams in the Serie A, and that the energy comes from them.
00:03:28
Speaker
because equally the first half showed what Milan are like when they are poor um and I think no one just no one embodies that better than Theo Hernandez in the first half who was abysmal um and he he's you know you he's part of course he's to blame for the first goal you could say Mike Mignon as well again that the corner that his left corner ah his left post is where is where um he concedes and it's clear that strikers and attackers in Italy are aware of this and so they always try to finish in that first in that first corner
00:04:05
Speaker
um But overall Milan were really, really poor, really, really poor in the first half. No intensity, no nothing, ah no no no shape. And it was just a little bit more of the same under Paolo Fonseca and not so much under Sergio Fonseca who you know was um was was diagnosed with fever and there was talk of him in maybe not even turning up for this for route for his for his um ah debut but if you know anything about Sao Paulo it would take far more than fever or anything. It would have to be something really serious for him to not stand there ah when when when coaching, let alone when coaching in his debut game.
00:04:46
Speaker
ah Whether that is wise or not, ah remain you know that's for the medical professionals at Milan to decide, and I'm sure that if it had been serious, they wouldn't have let him stand there. um But regardless, um it was we saw a completely shift in the second half, especially after Dusan Vlawic,
00:05:04
Speaker
ah Mr. Sitter, again, which is now par for the course with him. um Overall, we're going to get to the Miss sitters across both of these semifinals because there's been quite a few of them. ah But yeah, he misses a sitter. Milan are, you know, play better from the 50th minute route, 50 first, 50 second minute. There's more intensity. Milan look more cohesive in their press. They look more interested above all because they certainly didn't look interested in the first half.
00:05:31
Speaker
um and and and and a penalty of a stupid challenge from Locatelli which succeeded a wonderful tackle by Nicola Savona, Anteo Hernandez actually, ah who got the ball really cleanly and then immediately Locatelli goes into there and he sees a little bit clumsy and rash um and and the penalty was given and there's not really much much to talk about that, at least not from the replays I saw and I didn't really see Juventus players protesting too much either. um And Christian Pulisic,
00:06:02
Speaker
you know, scores a penalty where Michaela di Gregorio is on the ball. But it did kind of feel like Milan, the luck, lady luck was on Milan's side. um And none more so than when Federico Gatti equally as unlucky scapegoat, when Alvaro Morata drops deep and plays a wonderful poor ball down drops deep and plays through Yunus Musath down the right wing. And I know a lot of people will want to criticize Federico Gatti. I think he's unlucky there more than anything.
00:06:36
Speaker
I think Michaela di Gregorio is actually a little bit out of position. um He's a little bit too high up. And and I've watched this call a little bit quite a few times already. And I i do feel that, yes, Gatti is unlucky and he shouldn't his foot is not rested. He should be more resolute in that situation and not allow for deflections, perhaps, but I can't help but feel that Digrigori is a little bit out of place um and a little bit out of

Juventus's Lack of Response and Gatti's Role

00:07:00
Speaker
position. But it's absolutely a lucky goal, regardless, more than anything. And Milan definitely had lady luck on their side to tonight. um And, you know, given what they, you know, what they've gone through, if you want to look at it,
00:07:15
Speaker
in the and the grand scheme of things. I don't know if they deserved their luck and Juva didn't deserve the luck because it it's impossible to say because this is a separate competition. um But I do feel that Juventus after the equalizer, not just when Milan took the lead, but after the equalizer again were toothless, again couldn't react, couldn't create, couldn't kill off the game and it showed once more like I said both the strengths and weaknesses of this team Milan are a team that can react in big games as they have done against Inter against Real Madrid okay in this game they were awful in the first half
00:07:54
Speaker
But in big games, Milan can turn it on if they suddenly get that you know get that that fire under their bellies, which they did in the second half. And equally, Juventus start games really well, ah score a goal, but they can't kill it off. And when the other team hurts them, they can't they don't seem to be able to react in terms of creating chances. They have shown lots of character and I have praised them quite rightly and quite deservedly for reacting in games late scoring equalizers. But the problem is that that's been more down to chance and more to individual brilliance from Francisco Concesa and the Champions League particularly than Juva actually having a structure and playing their way through. They look a little bit shell shocked Juva
00:08:39
Speaker
in towards the end of games um in terms of structure and we saw that tonight and again if we're talking about Federico Gatti I mean that chance at the end where which is I think is blocked um is is just symptomatic of him isn't it in the sense that he's a good player but he's he he went when there when mistakes are made or when when there's a little bit of luck involved he looks like a bricklayer he doesn't look like a professional footballer And I don't think that's, I don't want to be too critical on him because I can't, you know, the goal against Sasolo, which is forever a meme. And then, of course, tonight, it it will go down on him. ah But I do feel that there is also some luck involved as well. And so I don't I do feel a little bit unfair. It does feel unfair that it keeps happening to him. But then the converse argument is where there is smoke, there is fire. It does keep happening to him.

Team Analysis and Future Prospects

00:09:36
Speaker
And why is that and so on so it's it's it's on the what it's what it's the one hand second on the one hand on the on the other hand discussion a little bit But overall, looking forward now to the to this, to the to you know for from a Juventus perspective, there is some there's lots of things there's lots of things to think about. Juventus do still feel, to me, like a more complete team than Milan are. We don't know what Sergio Conseco can do yet. um I don't think there's much we can't we can read much from it other than that his sides will react.
00:10:08
Speaker
um in the sense that if he's not happy with the first half, if he's not happy with his players, he will he has and he has energy, even when he's got the flu or fever, to induce that energy into his sides and get them to react as we saw Milan do in the second half.

Supercoppa Atmosphere and Competition Questions

00:10:26
Speaker
But overall, how far it takes them and where it leads them overall in the season, I think it's impossible to say right now, other than these are two teams with clear deficiencies, with clear problems and lots of question marks moving forward to the second part of the season. And it's ah you know it's it's going to be very interesting to see how this how how this plays out in the Serie A.
00:10:50
Speaker
But right now, it's the Supercoppa Italiana, it's in Saudi Arabia, and I have to say that what we saw last year with the Curva there, with Inter's Curva, there are some Unapoli fans there, Lazio fans there. This season, this year, when they when neither of the Curva had decided to turn up, this has been a snooze fest um in the sense that not just from ah so far, at least, without without, you know, we haven't seen the final yet, of course.
00:11:17
Speaker
But so far it has been a snoozefest in the sense that the fans that turn up to these games are more quiet than the silent section of the law library in Stockholm University, um which I have first-hand experience of. um Especially Inter Atalanta, it wasn't sold out.
00:11:35
Speaker
Tonight was sold out, but it was still pretty quiet and that is that that's not a good thing. And the fact that the organizers said that this game was sold out, it wasn't because there was like 90% capacity.
00:11:49
Speaker
And tonight is a Friday, which is a holiday in the sense that it's not a holiday, it's a weekend ah ah in in in Saudi Arabia, in the Middle East generally. the sas Friday is like Saturday in in in Europe. Everyone's off. There's no school. Everyone's off work and so on as well.
00:12:05
Speaker
So I am very surprised at the note that they that the organizers weren't able to fill this stadium out more, and I'm a little bit surprised that the fans who were there weren't able to create more of an atmosphere. um last seat Last year was actually pretty decent, even though it out of the big three teams was only Inter there. That's a little reflection there. um If we look forward, um to this to the issue of missed sitters. I mean, between Dushan Vlawic, Toa Hernandez and Lautaro Martinez, it's been an absolute festival of missed sitters. It's got the feeling of a a friendly pre-season, mid-season tournament. um And
00:12:46
Speaker
the finishing has been as such the quality of the games especially tonight definitely gives credence to that opinion and that feeling um so this does have a feeling of a pre-season mid-season friendly tournament um none of the teams can be too tired Well, none of the four teams can be too tired. Gasperini rotated pretty much every single player, ah starting, okay, they were good players, but he didn't exactly, tell he didn't like he said himself, I didn't turn up with the primavera. But it does send a signal that as to how serious he took this um and tournament, and if you look at the the how the players perform,
00:13:21
Speaker
all across all teams, especially Inter Milan and Juve, you wonder how serious they take it. um Not very many did.

Anticipating the Milan vs Inter Final

00:13:28
Speaker
So it is what it is. um Now, looking forward to this final, which we played on Monday night at 8pm CET, I think, on Twelfth Night, um whether it turns into a another comedy, Shakespearean or not,
00:13:44
Speaker
um remains to be seen or if it turns into a tragedy um when Denzel Dumfries and Theo Hernandez face off again. I for one am very excited for that little ah rendezvous quote unquote and I honestly don't know what to expect from that game based on these two these two games of course into our massive favorites but then again this Milan just beat Juve, this is going to do work wonders for their confidence and they're going to go into that game and they're probably going to be very tight and low as Sergio Conseil-Sao usually is very good at organizing his teams and also Milan have already beaten Inter this season playing like that. So you know Inter and an Inter with ah injured Marcus Turram and a Lautaro Martinez who just can't score to save his life
00:14:31
Speaker
there is ah There is an opening here, there is a possibility here for an upset and for Milan to win the second derby in a row after Inter 1-6. So there's there's quite a lot of talking points and there's quite a lot of interest interesting storylines to to look forward to on Monday night.
