And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about understanding how you make pottery and understand what you like to make and how this is really helpful with you discovering your own voice.
Speaker: You see, I just had a really great conversation with Chris and Kiefer. And in this, she was explaining how it's important to understand how you like to make pottery, understand what you are doing and how you make pottery. And she gave an example. She was saying that when she was a resident at John Glick's Pottery Studio,
Speaker: she was trying to emulate more his work because you know the more you're around a certain person the more your pottery is probably most likely going to look like that but the only problem was that that wasn't really her that's not really her like own style that's not how she likes to make pottery for her her pottery was to be more precise and
Speaker: When she started, when she made that adjustment, she was able to start making pottery that she felt like was more her own because she knew how she liked to make pottery and know what she was trying to convey because simply by not really copying what other people are making, she knew what she was, how she likes to make pottery. And I think that's why it is super important to help you discover your own voice. But how do you know what you
Speaker: like to make or how you like to make pottery. Well, it's important to kind of like really dig deep with yourself. So like look at other people's potteries and look at your own. Right. So let's say somebody is making some very extravagant pottery. That is what we're trying to say. But if you try to emulate that because you think that's what you you like. But the only problem is that that's not really your personality. It's not really
Speaker: who you are as a person. So you try to make this extravagant looking pottery, but every single time you make it, it just doesn't really feel, it doesn't really hit home as hard as if you're looking at the other persons. Now, on the flip side, you could be making very, very more simple pottery, and that's what you like to make. You like making precise pottery, you like making pottery that is very simple in its look, but still looks beautiful, right?
Speaker: It's really important to know kind of your personality with this. Are you maybe more extroverted? Like when you're out in public, are you talking to people more? When you're in your social circle, are you talking to people more? Are you more outgoing? Or are you more quiet? It kind of helps you determine on what you're trying to make. Or maybe if you're alone, are you the type of person that does a lot of random things? Maybe you're dancing around the house and maybe you are
Speaker: you are running around the house, maybe you're all excited. And you could portray that into your pottery because you know, that is what you are, you know, that's what you do as a person, maybe when you're alone, or maybe when you're out with others. And that's what you do. And you can put that into your pottery, right? Because that is your your personality. And that is really how you put your own personality into your work is by knowing yourself,
Speaker: and you know what you like. Maybe if you like humor, you could try putting humor into your pottery. However, you do that, you can try putting humor into your pottery, right? That is your personality because you know that you're a funny person and you can just put that into your pottery as well and show your own personality.
Speaker: And that's why I think it is really important to understand how you work and understand your own personality so that it can help you discover your own voice. So again, I ask this question, what type of person are you? Are you the type of person that is more outgoing, fun, likes to do adventurous maybe? Are you the type of person that is more laid back, chill, and likes to just chill out and maybe read a book or just really just be present with yourself?
Speaker: And I really believe that it's really important to just know yourself first. Even if you don't know yourself fully, you have an idea of what type of person you are. And I think that is gonna help you with discovering your voice, and it's gonna help you make pottery a lot easier, a lot better, and your pottery is just gonna look that much better.
