Freedom, At All Costs

Brothers and Teachers

 Today, I'm introducing a new component of my Brothers And Teachers podcast: voiceover audio of my memoir in progress. The working title of the book is Freedom, At All Costs, and the book is about redefining freedom. For most of my life, I thought it was about escape, about getting out, finding something else, about leaving. I spent a lot of time and energy trying to get away, and I did find freedom, but it also came with some very real costs. In the end, I've come to realize that freedom was a lot closer than I thought all along, and that most of all, it comes from inside.

I've been working on this book for some time already, and I've begun to post chapters of it on my Substack. Now I'll be sharing audio of those chapters in the podcast feed as well. I like doing these voiceovers and it provides some variety in between the interviews that I'm doing. These episodes will be numbered starting with the letter F to distinguish them from the regular podcast episodes, which you will continue to see with the letter E.

Although I enjoy other types of writing, I’ve always been drawn to memoir, and when I woke up a few years ago and remembered that I wanted to write, memoir is what came to mind first of all. Memoir is not autobiography, but stories from a slice through life. Some of my favorite examples of memoir writing are Reckless by Chrissie Hynde, Acid for the Children, by Flea, I Wrote This Book Because I Love You, by Tim Kreider, Where The Body Meets Memory, by David Mura, Another B******t Night in Suck City, by Nick Flynn, Just Kids, by , The Tender Bar, by J.R. Moehringer, This Boy’s Life, by Tobias Wolff, Ham on Rye, byCharles Bukowski, Drinking, A Love Story, by Caroline Knapp, and The Hard Crowd, by Rachel Kushner, just to name a few.

You can listen to the podcast either on Substack or on any of the usual podcast apps. I like Overcast, but you can find BROTHERS AND TEACHERS on Apple, Spotify, Listen Notes, Amazon, et cetera.

Here are the chapters that I’ve published so far:

* Up In The Cave

* Round File

* North Dallas Forty

Do me a favor, and if you do listen to the podcast, give it a like, and or a review on whatever platform you do listen on- that will help other people find it.

Thanks a lot for reading and listening, and I hope you do enjoy.
