this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about how you don't have to have just one single voice, one single style with your pottery. You see a while back, my sister and I were watching Star Wars and we started with the first or episode three through six and then we went to the prequels because you know that's how they came out in order. But then we went to the prequels and
00:00:55
Speaker
in episode three revenge of the Sith what happens is order 66 happens where all the clones end up killing all the Jedi and it's mass genocide on the Jedi order and you see during this battle Anakin the main character from the prequels which later turns into Darth Vader he becomes he starts becoming Darth Vader in this and
00:01:25
Speaker
in doing so he goes from being on the light side of the force to turning to the dark side of the force and in this his master Obi-Wan Kenobi was fighting him and while they're fighting Obi-Wan says only a Sith deals in absolutes and you see it's the same thing with pottery and finding your own style your own voice
Embracing Multiple Pottery Styles
00:01:52
Speaker
you do not need to have one single style. You can have many, many, many different styles. Are you a Jedi or are you a Sith? You see, the Jedi have many different styles and they are not absolute. They don't, nothing is kind of, nothing is in stone for them. While the Sith, on the other hand, it is all about more destruction and that's their absolute
00:02:21
Speaker
So let me ask you again, are you a Jedi or are you a Sith? You don't have to have just one single voice to make your voice or your pottery look good. In my opinion, I think it's better to have multiple styles, three to five styles that you like to make. That way you can just kind of rotate them around.
00:02:42
Speaker
If you're getting kind of bored of one style, then you can go to another style and you can rotate it and rotate it and rotate it and rotate it. And then what happens is you're not just stuck making one single thing piece of pottery. That's what happens. That's what causes burnout is that when we are making pottery, we are only making one single thing because we like to think that this is our style.
00:03:08
Speaker
But the problem with that is when we keep on doing the same thing over and over and over again, we get bored of it because we know what's gonna happen. We know that it's gonna, how it's gonna turn out. And we know that this is what other people are liking. So we are continuing doing that. But the thing is, you must, in my opinion, you must have more styles, multiple styles, at least three to five. The reason why I say this is because I have dealt with this myself.
00:03:39
Speaker
because back when I was first starting pottery on my own the only thing I tend to make I used to make was mugs because I wanted to get good at mugs and I wanted to be able to sell my mugs but the problem was that was the only thing that I was making and I wasn't allowing my skills to expand outwards because I was only so focused on my mugs. It's good to focus on a single thing
Creativity Through Style Combination
00:04:05
Speaker
but not at the cost of you developing your voice further or at the cost of you burning out. If you burn out because you are only making the same thing over and over again, whose fault is it? It's your own fault for burning out. Now you must be able to depict three to five styles. Second thing is
00:04:31
Speaker
try combining all your different styles and try combining different techniques and rotate them. So let's say you like carving animals and then you also like robot designs outside of that but you don't typically make robot designs for your pottery. Now imagine if you combine those two techniques together and you created
00:04:56
Speaker
Carved animals that had robot parts on them. They're basically like cyborg animals that you carve. Could you imagine what that would do to your voice, your style, how many more people would know you because you are combining techniques and you're combining different ways to actually make your pottery look better. And then if you rotate different techniques and combinations, you're gonna have more multiple styles at once.
00:05:25
Speaker
those three to five styles that you picked at first end up blooming into like six or seven different styles because you combine different styles. Now just think about that what that does to your pottery. I think it makes your pottery just look that much better because you aren't afraid to try something new and you actually end up becoming more valuable with your work because you are pushing it to its furthest capacity.
Creating for Joy, Not Expectations
00:05:52
Speaker
Finally the last thing is
00:05:55
Speaker
to just simply make what you like to make. Don't listen to what other people are saying that you should make because that's no fun. If you don't make what you want to make, then you are going to get more burnt out faster than if you were not making what you want to make. I hope you guys enjoyed this episode. And again, are you a Jedi or are you a Sith? Have you ever asked yourself the question
