Speaker: If you love pottery and want to take your skills to the next level, you're in the right place. Find your own pottery style right here on Shaping Your Pottery with Nick Torres. Let's get started. If you want to try a sculpting, here are three tips I have learned from my journey of sculpting to help you get started. Number three is my personal fate.

Speaker: So if you have been thinking about maybe you want to try something new with your pottery, maybe it's, maybe you're real throwing it out, but you want to try sculpting and you see people making these big giant bases and your coil building with a throwing on the wheel and you just want to start being able to do that.

Speaker: Here are my three best tips for you that I have learned to help you get started in school. Number one is work with a mix of soft and a little bit of firmer clay, like a little bit not so like firm words, leather hard, but just just firm enough.

Speaker: The reason why I say this is because especially if you're going to be hand building everything, if you have it too hard, like like the leather hard stage or or even a little bit too soft, then it's going to make it a really difficult time for you to actually be able to sculpt things. It's going to it's going to be a lot harder to bend things the way you want it. So you want to use a little bit of softer clay

Speaker: or a little bit just firmer, soft firm, let's call it that, a soft firm clay. This will really help you get the dimensions you want, the shapes you want and make it be able to move how you want it. So the first tip is to use a soft firm clip.

Speaker: Tip number two is know that you are probably won't be good at it right away. You probably won't be good at hoping right away. And I know that's probably not what you want to hear, especially if you want to get started in scrolling, but it's true.

Speaker: You're not going to be necessarily good at sculpting right away. It took me months and months to get just one design for my characters that I've been making. But I'm glad I stuck with it because if you can get through that that messy middle of where you're not going to be good, then you're going to be able to go a lot further with your sculptor. And who knows, you might even take less time than I did. You might be making some good

Speaker: sculptures almost right away like maybe in a week or two or maybe even a month but just know that it probably won't happen and if you can have that in the back of your mind that I'm not going to be good at this whole thing thing because I'm just trying out and instead focus on making tiny improvements over time they didn't go a lot further

Speaker: if you were have the mindset, oh, I'm going to be good at this right away. So that is number two. So number one is to use a soft firm clip. Number two is to know that you're probably not going to be good at this. And number three, my personal favorite. Is to just start making. Too many times we get into our own head. We have something that's working or maybe we have something that we're doing that is making some money.

Speaker: and we're afraid to go out and venture and try new things with our pottery. But I'm telling you, the best thing that you can do to get started in sculpting or anything in pottery is just to start doing it. You have to start doing it. Start putting in those reps. Start doing it. However it comes out, just start making it.

Speaker: the more you make the more likely your vision is going to start coming to life and then the better your skills are going to get and then that's that number two step is going to get out of the out of the water because by that time you're going to end up being good but you have to just get started. I didn't realize that I was holding myself back

Speaker: for a while because I was feeling very very, going through the motions with my wheelchair and pottery. I didn't realize I was going through the motions until I just started making my sculptures. And once I started making my sculptures, that's when everything kind of came together. So you just have to start making. That is the best piece of advice that you will receive

Speaker: if you want to start sculpting, if you want to start wheel throwing, if you want to start whatever. But if you want to start sculpting today, just start doing it. That is the best thing that you can do. And that is the best thing that will happen to your pottery. I hope you guys enjoy this episode. See you guys in the next.
