Generation 58 - The End of the Clone

Japanese scientists cloned a mouse for 58 consecutive generations. The first 25 were fine. Then the genome started collapsing from the inside while the mice looked perfectly healthy. Generation 58 was born alive, appeared normal, and died within a day. Cause of death unknown.

The paper is the first proof of Muller's Ratchet, the theory that copying without genetic mixing produces irreversible mutational meltdown.
