What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here, and in this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm gonna be talking about why you need imposter syndrome in order to find your unique voice with your pottery, and how that's really going to help you with discovering your voice.
Leveraging Imposter Syndrome
00:01:04
Speaker
You see, all the time, I hear people saying, I feel like my pottery isn't good enough. I feel like my pottery should be
00:01:15
Speaker
look a little bit different. I feel like I'm copying other potters and I feel like an imposter. I feel like what I'm making is just copying other potters. And these are all very, very, very valid reasons to have imposter syndrome, right?
Imitation as Innovation
00:01:32
Speaker
Imposter syndrome can feel very, very crappy at times because especially when you took so much time to make a pot and it turns out like pretty much everybody out looking like everybody else's.
00:01:45
Speaker
But the thing about imposter syndrome is you need to use it to your advantage. You see, whatever you are making right now, more than likely, it has probably already been done. It's probably already been made by some other potter in some time, in some way or form. Pottery has been around for over 10,000 years. Take that into account. Pottery has been around for over 10,000 years.
00:02:12
Speaker
And because it's been around for so long, there's been so many different things that have been done to pottery. And there's been so many different ways of making pottery, so many different techniques to express themselves. Because it's been around for so long, different cultures start doing different things, and everybody has their own unique thing.
Embracing Copying for Success
00:02:33
Speaker
So more than likely, somebody somewhere has probably done what you have done.
00:02:39
Speaker
But that is a good thing. That's a good thing. That means what you are probably trying to create in your mind, that vision in your mind, that means it can come to life. That means it can come to life and that means you can start finding your own voice because it's already been done before.
00:02:59
Speaker
There's a quote that I like from Tony Robbins and basically he says that success leaves clues and it's so so true in pottery Imposter the feeling of imposter syndrome is a good thing because if you think you are making pottery that looks like everybody else's it looks like somebody else's that you admire That's a good thing because one you are modeling them to try to find what you think is going to work for you but also to
Sports and Imposter Syndrome
00:03:27
Speaker
It's good because now you aren't willing to settle for the norm of pottery. You're not willing to settle and you are willing to make your pottery look a little bit different, look a little bit better, and you're willing to start putting in those reps and those reps until you see that voice starts to come to life. And I know we all face imposter syndrome. I know I have face imposter syndrome myself.
00:03:55
Speaker
And you know, it's that feeling where you just feel like whatever you are making, it's just not good enough, but it is a good thing. You know, I don't know if any of you have ever played sports before, but when growing up, I played a

lot of sports. I played basketball, I played baseball, I even tried football one time, hated that, but I tried it and I just played everything. And the one sport where is each, when each season would start for that sport,
00:04:24
Speaker
Everybody would be super nervous. They would always say, I'm nervous. I'm nervous about this first game. But the thing about nervousness and the feeling of an imposter syndrome is that when you have this feeling,
00:04:37
Speaker
You also have a feeling of excitement. You have a feeling of excitement of, oh, what's this game going to be? How this game is going to go? I'm excited to go out there. And so that one sport that I was talking about that everybody felt nervousness was baseball. Every single season, somebody or somewhere would always tell me how nervous they are. Because baseball is a very mentally challenging game. If you mess up, everybody sees it.
00:05:07
Speaker
and it puts a lot of pressure on you and but for me it was more of a feeling of an excitement and I just enjoyed playing the game so much that I just wanted to be out there I wanted to go out there and play
00:05:23
Speaker
And it's the same thing with our pottery. If we change our mindset a little bit, instead of focusing on the outcome of what the pottery is gonna look like, or if we are copying somebody else, focus on improving your skills.
Mindset Shift for Excellence
00:05:36
Speaker
Focus on improving your skills 1% at a time. 1% at a time, and keep growing. Let your skills do the talking for your pottery and finding your voice. Because that's how you're gonna, one, use impostorism to your advantage,
00:05:52
Speaker
But also you're going to pretty much eliminate imposter syndrome because you're letting your skills do the talking.
00:05:58
Speaker
So again, I tell you that imposter syndrome is a good thing. It's what it's going to determine that how your pottery is going to look like. It's going to determine how your pottery is going to grow because of this feeling. It's nervousness, but it's also excitement. It's also excitement because you're going in a new direction. It's going into a direction where you want your pottery to go.
00:06:23
Speaker
So, imposter syndrome is a good thing. Use it to your advantage and don't settle for the norm of what everybody else is making. Imposter syndrome is only preparing you to make the best possible pottery. Hope this brought you some value and I'll see you guys next time.
