Speaker: Welcome back to the PolicyViz Podcast. I'm your host, Jon Schwabisch. Welcome everyone to the season 13 premiere of the PolicyViz Podcast. That's right, it's going to be a lucky season for us. I've got a lot of great content for you all set up coming your way. And before I published my first episode of the season, I thought I would just take a quick minute to let you know where things are headed. on this show in this very lucky season 13. i've got a lot of things set up i took a break for a couple of months over the summer to not do any interviews and not create any content for the podcast so that was a nice break but now that it's late august and getting into september i am doing a lot of interviews getting things set up for you because i've got a lot of great content to bring your way we're going to be talking about new books on this season of the show. I've got new projects that people are preparing and publishing to share with you. I've got folks doing really cool projects and work in the social media space when it comes to communicating data and data visualization stories in the ways that people actually are consuming media these days. I'm sure, of course, we'll be talking about AI. You can't really escape it and I'm not turning this into an AI show, so we're not gonna spend all of our time focusing on AI, but I'm sure it's going to come up because it's ah obviously a big part of the data visualization field right now. We're also going to talk a lot about accessibility. The first full episode of the show with a very, very special guest focuses primarily on accessibility. And you're going to a lot of, I think, practical strategies and approaches that you can use to make your online content more accessible for people who have different types of impairments, all the way from vision to physical to intellectual or cognitive impairments. I'm also gonna introduce a new kind of series in the podcast. So as you may know, I tend to release episodes every other week, usually on a Wednesday morning. That has been my cadence.
Speaker: For the next few months, I'm going to release an episode every week, but in those intervening episodes, it's just gonna be me and I'm trying a new thing where I'm gonna be talking about some of my favorite data visualization, some of my favorite graphs that have inspired me that are in my long-term memory bank, the visualizations that I go back to, that I used to teach, that I rely on to think about how to communicate and engage people in very different ways. So these aren't gonna be necessarily visualizations from 2025 2026, but we're gonna be going back in time a little bit. And you're going some other voices on those episodes. But for the most part, those will be relatively shorter episodes. Just me talking through some of my favorite graphs over the last 10 or 15 years that I have used in my work, in my writing, and in my teaching. So that's a new part of the program that you'll hear. And we'll see how long I can keep that up, how long I can keep publishing episodes every week. But hopefully you'll find some value in that. to see and hear how I think about data visualization and how my evolution in working in this field has changed over the last 15 years or so.
Speaker: I'm also excited to have my first live episode of the podcast that will be taking place in November in Boston as part of the IEEE Viz conference. We have a new summit that I am co-organizing with Raquel Ferguson and Frank Olavsky called Cluster, the Practitioner Summit.
Speaker: So we are pulling together. We are bringing practice. trying to bring practitioners into the IEEE Vis academic conference to bring these two sides of the data visualization field together. So I hope you'll join us for that. It's in Boston. You can register just for the day. If you'd like to participate, we will be having lightning talks. We are also going to have practitioners info groups. So we are going to be sitting in different groups talking about what it means to be a practitioner, what the challenges are of being a freelancer, for example, any question that you want to ask. and talk about are free to do in this summit. We are going to have discussions on how do you form an LLC? How do you actually pay your taxes? What is an s SOW? What is an MSA? What are all these terms and requirements that are needed to actually be a freelancer or be a contractor in the data visualization space? So you should check out the new cluster website. I'll link to it in the show notes. um But we are going to be having as part of that ah one day summit, we will be having a live episode of this podcast. I can't tell you who's going to be there yet, but I have three fantastic guests lined up for that episode. So we'll have the first live episode of the podcast. And of course, as always, I'm going to be trying to bring you both the audio version of the show and the video version of the show. So if you are a YouTube subscriber, you can check that out. I'm also trying to create more YouTube content, particularly around the Flourish Data Visualization Tool and Microsoft Excel and a little bit in PowerPoint as well. And particularly the last few months over the summer, I published a few things on how I'm starting to integrate AI into those two tools, particularly with Claude and Copilot built right in or accessible right inside those two tools.
