#354 Why you should learn to articulate your thoughts about your pottery image

#354 Why you should learn to articulate your thoughts about your pottery

Shaping Your Pottery with Nic Torres
Avatar
51 Plays2 years ago

In this episode, Nic discusses the significance of articulating your thoughts and preferences concerning pottery, drawing on insights from an interview with Luke Bone Cutter. Nic explains that understanding and expressing why you like certain aspects of pottery, whether it's colors, shapes, or techniques, can not only deepen your appreciation of others' work but also refine your own craft. He encourages listeners to examine a favored piece of their own work, dive deep into understanding their preferences, and apply the same critical thought to others' pottery. This practice, Nic argues, can help potters develop a clearer voice and vision in their work. Additionally, Nic offers resources for listeners struggling to find a unique theme for their pottery, directing them to a website offering 53 potential themes to inspire their work.

This is Nick Torres here, and for those that don't know me, it's my mission to help potters like yourselves to cover your own unique voice with your pottery.

Takeaways from Luke Bonecutter Interview

00:00:11
Speaker
You see, very recently, I had a great interview with Luke Bonecutter, and during this interview,

Insights on Pottery Preferences

00:00:18
Speaker
One of the things that Luke said helped him the most was when he was in community college. He had to do this thing where he had to articulate his thoughts on other people's work.
00:00:30
Speaker
And he had to give examples of why he liked that piece. For example, it wouldn't just be like, oh, I like the colors. But that could be one thing that he said. But the way he articulated it was a little bit different. You have to go a little bit deeper. Why do you really like this piece? What do you like about it?

Improving Style Through Articulation

00:00:50
Speaker
Oh, I really like the colors.
00:00:51
Speaker
Oh, I like the way this person shaped their mug or the way they made their handle or the way they, you know, they combine two different techniques together. And the more you can articulate your thoughts on other people's pottery, it's also going to help you with your own pottery. But how is that? It helps you to own pottery because if you can articulate your thoughts, then you can really see what you are liking and you can see the direction you are trying to go.

Analyzing Favorite Pottery Pieces

00:01:18
Speaker
I have a challenge for you. So take.
00:01:21
Speaker
one of the pieces that you have made recently, maybe one of your more favorite ones. And I want you to look at that that pot that you made and ask yourself, why do you like this pot that you made? Why do I like this pot that I made? And then start listing off reasons and go deep on it, too.
00:01:40
Speaker
Don't just say because I think it looks cool. Go deep. Oh, I really like the shape on this. Oh, I like the way the handle came out. I like the way I trimmed this foot ring. And the more you can articulate these things, the better your voice starts showing up.

Enhancing Style Preferences

00:01:56
Speaker
Because now you start noticing these things that you are noticing. Oh, wow. I didn't even know I like that thing. I didn't know I like different colors on my pod. I didn't know I like to make my foot ring that way. I didn't know that I make this that way.
00:02:09
Speaker
Because you start noticing things and now you can go deeper on those things that you start noticing and you start liking. And when you go deeper on those things that you start liking, that's when your pottery voice truly starts coming alive. So you have to learn to articulate what you like in your pots.

Applying Skills to Others' Pottery

00:02:26
Speaker
Not only that, it's good to do it for other people's pottery as well. So after you've done that challenge that I just said to you about articulating your thoughts on your own pottery, do that with somebody else's pottery as well. Because it's good if the more reps you get into that,
00:02:40
Speaker
The better you can articulate the pot for somebody else, it's going to translate right back into your own pottery. So get good at articulating your thoughts on pottery and go deep on why you like these things or why you don't like them as well.
