the mindset needed to succeed in competitive environments.
00:01:28
Find A Way Podcast
Welcome Priscilla.
00:01:30
Priscilla Zanatelli
Thank you so much. It's a pleasure to be here. Thank you so much for the invitation.
00:01:34
Ingrid
Priscilla, before we start, can you share more about your business?
00:01:39
Priscilla Zanatelli
Of course. So I'm the founder of Next Step. It's a career mentorship business for professionals who want to grow faster in their careers. And that can mean, mean for example, lending a promotion, earning a higher salary, or finally figuring out how to balance personal life and professional ambitions. So with over 20 years of experience in great companies, I bring the insider's view.
00:02:04
Priscilla Zanatelli
So

Journey in HR and Career Decisions

00:02:05
Priscilla Zanatelli
as a human resources manager and at next steps, i i help the clients position themselves, communicate their value with confidence and take both steps so they can yeah have both successful and fulfilling careers.
00:02:22
Priscilla Zanatelli
So.
00:02:23
Find A Way Podcast
Thank you for that. ah You reached an HR manager position in a Fortune 100 company in the US manufacturing sector, an environment that's not typically diverse.
00:02:34
Find A Way Podcast
Can you share what ah that journey looked like and what kept you from moving forward, kept you moving forward?
00:02:40
Priscilla Zanatelli
of Of course. um Well, I can definitely say that it was not a straight or an easy path as a Brazilian woman immigrant. I was often the only one in the room. So in the last job that I had, it was me and 12 men. That can be both empowering, but also very exhausting.
00:03:01
Priscilla Zanatelli
So I think what kept me going was a mix of purpose and also resilience. um I knew I wasn't just opening doors for myself, but hopefully making it easier for people that would come, so other women that would come after me.
00:03:14
Priscilla Zanatelli
And I leaned heavily on my values and the community and the you know the the belief that representations actually matter. So we need to change how decisions are made.
00:03:26
Priscilla Zanatelli
And I was one in the table to bring that up.
00:03:29
Ingrid
What

Embracing Differences as Strengths

00:03:30
Ingrid
were some of the pivotal moments or decisions in your career that helped you break through the barriers as a Brazilian immigrant and, you know, being in a dominated, in a male dominated field?
00:03:44
Priscilla Zanatelli
Well, I think the last one was saying yes to opportunities that really scared me. So, for example, that one leading, you know, human resources manager in a very male-oriented company environment that really caused discomfort.
00:04:01
Priscilla Zanatelli
At the same time, I had already, you know, worked for the same company in Brazil during six years, but still doing the same job in the U.S. it's completely different. and that was a hard one.
00:04:12
Priscilla Zanatelli
and Another turning point was when I stopped to try to fit in the places and actually understood that my background, my perspective, my voice, being a woman in such a different environment was actually my asset.
00:04:28
Priscilla Zanatelli
So I began

Advice on Inclusivity and Bias in the Workplace

00:04:30
Priscilla Zanatelli
to a position myself and build alliances and also spoke up even when i felt you know was risky or a challenge so and of course pursuing education so two master's degrees very um many different certifications that also gave me a lot of credibility i think that helps and that's what i help my clients at next step
00:04:54
Find A Way Podcast
That's um beautiful. Thank for sharing that. And knowing you ever since I existed, because I like to make it very clear that Priscilla is older, okay? Two years and three months.
00:05:05
Find A Way Podcast
So please do not ever ask.
00:05:05
Priscilla Zanatelli
Although everybody asks who is the oldest, so I guess I don't look that bad.
00:05:08
Find A Way Podcast
so
00:05:13
Find A Way Podcast
So my my Botox is probably overdue, so ah But making very clear that ah Priscilla, looking back um and knowing you ever since, you know, my existence, what advice would you give to your younger self um when you were just starting off, not only in HR, but in life as well?
00:05:34
Priscilla Zanatelli
um I'd probably say, um and what I i also try to do with my with my clients, stop trying to have all the answers because nobody has all the answers. So focus on asking better questions.
00:05:47
Priscilla Zanatelli
I think when I started in HR, I thought credibility came from knowing everything. so And over time, you see that the real impact is listening deeply, being curious,
00:05:59
Priscilla Zanatelli
um so Building trust, that's a very important one in the work environment. So um I'd also remind me that being different is not a weakness. So like I said, it can be an asset.
00:06:11
Priscilla Zanatelli
And I think that would be it. And I'd probably say, hey, Priscilla, take it easy. Everything will work out. and go don You don't need to bite your nails. You don't need to be so anxious about everything. Just go in your pace and everything be fine. So that's probably what I'd say.
00:06:28
Ingrid
I love that. um I'm curious. So when you you talked about being different, it can be an asset, not only like not a not a weakness. What are some of the practical ways HR leaders can move beyond tokenism and create truly inclusive environments for immigrants, for women and other underrepresented groups?
00:06:50
Priscilla Zanatelli
So I think it starts moving from representation, you know just hiring people that are different in a good way, ah to belonging. So i' asking questions like, do they have a voice?
00:06:59
Find A Way Podcast
Thank
00:07:02
Priscilla Zanatelli
Are they heard? Are they growing? And to be very specific, so if you want some practical actions that HR or any leaders can can take, it can be redesigning policies for with real life in mind. So we all know we have families, we need parental support, language access. So everything that we know we need, and especially for women and immigrants, um ah I think the way is just, the path is just a little bit harder.
00:07:33
Priscilla Zanatelli
The second one would be diversify decision-making tables. So if you have good representation, you know, as directors, as president, just in decision-making that um move the company forward, then you'll you'll be able to hear different perspectives and then make the best decision.
00:07:55
Priscilla Zanatelli
And also invest in education for all. So inclusion is a shared responsibility. People usually say, hey, HR is responsible for this. No, I mean, of course, HR one you know that has to advocate for this, but it's everyone's job, actually.
00:08:12
Priscilla Zanatelli
And and in one thing that I try to do with myself is training all the time. yeah noticing your unconscious

Leadership Challenges and Coaching

00:08:20
Priscilla Zanatelli
bias because we all have them. So just make sure that you're not making the decision because you either like that person too much or you don't, who you dislike. So the bias, I think is an important one to that question. So.
00:08:35
Find A Way Podcast
And how do you personally navigate bias in the workplace, whether subtle or overt? What are the strategies that you have found to be effective in supporting others facing similar challenges?
00:08:48
Priscilla Zanatelli
ah mom That's a good one. I think I started um calling things out with confidence, but also with strategies. So especially in a French company, an American company, I used to come using facts, stories, data, and allies actually to shift perspectives.
00:09:09
Priscilla Zanatelli
So I think one powerful tool has has been monitoring you know um what I do in those similar situations. And I think when we feel seen, when people in general feel seen, they feel stronger.
00:09:22
Priscilla Zanatelli
And with that strength, yeah you know, it's kind of like a cycle. You call things out with more confidence. So it's really nice to see people also overcoming because I've also hired many immigrants and people with different backgrounds, ages, men, women.
00:09:39
Priscilla Zanatelli
um So it's nice nice. And I think also creating a system um that don't depend specifically on the individual. So, ah for example, and implementing you know feedback loops or also anonymous reporting channels, that's super important because the person might not feel comfortable to talk to their HR even or to their leaders, and they must not but have a way to show the company what's going on and what the company can improve. So I think that's that's also a big one.
00:10:13
Ingrid
I love that. And ah

Leading Inclusion Programs

00:10:15
Ingrid
what are the most common challenges you see managers face? And how do you coach them to become better leaders?
00:10:23
Priscilla Zanatelli
You see, what I usually see is um companies actually promoting the individual that has ah great contribution. So, you know, that person that does a really good job And then they naturally become a leader and they say, okay, you're doing such a great job.
00:10:39
Priscilla Zanatelli
Now you're a leader.
00:10:40
Find A Way Podcast
Thank you.
00:10:40
Priscilla Zanatelli
And it's really hard because sometimes that person doesn't have any experience or doesn't know how to give feedbacks or handle conflicts or even shifting the mindset from, you know, doing the great great work to developing others. And that's the key for leaders.
00:10:56
Priscilla Zanatelli
So I asked them to pause. and ask, hey, what does my team actually need from me to thrive, not only you know deliver. So what do they have to do? It's more than that. So what do they need to um developing on? What are the competencies that we're missing?
00:11:15
Priscilla Zanatelli
And of course, not leading without losing accountability. That's also very important. I think another big challenge is managing through change.
00:11:26
Priscilla Zanatelli
So I also help leaders understand that consistency builds trust. So it's not about what you say. If a leader says something, but acts in a totally different way. example, just like being a mom, I can't say something to my kids and to something different because it's the example that we'll teach. So the same thing goes for leaders.
00:11:48
Priscilla Zanatelli
And it's it's not about having all the answers. It's more about making the right questions and and listening very well, having that empathy and taking the best out of each person from your team, from your group.
00:12:02
Find A Way Podcast
I love that. I know you've had you've led many and multiple initiatives because I know you very well, but I want to share with the group, what is one initiative or program that you've led that have made a significant impact on a workplace culture?
00:12:17
Priscilla Zanatelli
um Yeah, that I have to see you that I'm very proud. And of course, nobody does the work alone. I've had great teams. But I think one that was the most meaningful was um one of the last ones I did in Brazil, in a French company, also manufacturing world.
00:12:36
Priscilla Zanatelli
And I ah launched an inclusion program. So we not only hired people with disability, all types of disability. We had people you know that only sign language, they had communicated through sign language.
00:12:49
Priscilla Zanatelli
We had people that are blind and hard of hearing and many different wheelchairs. And at the time, the company wasn't meeting the legal quota. We have a specific quota that we have to meet in Brazil.
00:13:02
Priscilla Zanatelli
And the culture wast um wasn't there yet, although it was a really great company and that embraced the cause. So we didn't just recruit. I personally trained over 800 employees.
00:13:16
Priscilla Zanatelli
And that really changed because we didn't only introduce the accessibility tools or create a support network. But we also um hired many of them people in in not only hired, but included them in the the work environment. So I think, but and I talk about numbers, but I think the biggest impact wasn't even the numbers.
00:13:39
Priscilla Zanatelli
It was seeing a shift in mindset. Of course, not everybody, not, we're humans, right? Some people are better prepared than ah than others. Some people go through change better than that than the others.
00:13:52
Priscilla Zanatelli
But so I think, um it was this shift in mindset. And we have to remind ourselves that diversity is not a charity or it's a strength. When you have people from different backgrounds, you make better

Impact of Immigrant Experience on Leadership

00:14:05
Priscilla Zanatelli
decisions.
00:14:05
Priscilla Zanatelli
So that's when I knew the culture started to change, even though, like I said, there was a company that um already embraced the cause in the headquarters.
00:14:06
Find A Way Podcast
Thank you.
00:14:14
Priscilla Zanatelli
And I think that was a big one. Thank
00:14:18
Ingrid
That sounds like an incredible project.
00:14:20
Priscilla Zanatelli
you.
00:14:20
Ingrid
um I'm curious to hear from your personal perspective, how has been an immigrant shaped or maybe changed to your leadership style and your approach to ar
00:14:32
Priscilla Zanatelli
I think it made me more humble, ah much more humble, I'd say, when you have to adapt to new things, so different languages, new systems, um and you also have to prove yourself twice.
00:14:46
Priscilla Zanatelli
i mean, we women know that, and being an immigrant woman, think, even more. And I also, I think I also started... paying attention to the people that that are being left out.
00:15:01
Priscilla Zanatelli
I think that's also, that was something I changed. um I also focus my HR approach, not only on policies, but you know, how, ah what are their stories? What are their experience?
00:15:17
Priscilla Zanatelli
So I started to ask different questions and i designed programs that had inclusion at center. and not as no detail or something that you have to do because you want to be good looking in the you know and company environment and everything. So um I think that was a big one. Humble became more humble.
00:15:40
Find A Way Podcast
And with the 20 plus and let's say just to highlight, she did start very young. So, you know, because that usually tells our age ah with 20 plus years in hr how have you seen the role of HR evolve and how and where do you see it going next?
00:16:00
Priscilla Zanatelli
um I think in the past, in maybe 20, 30 years, even, you know, people that are older, i think they might agree. We are mostly administrators, so the department handled policies and and payrolls and specific problems.
00:16:15
Priscilla Zanatelli
And over the years, that shifted dramatically. I think um HR has become a strategic partner, so um a culture-shaped, and more than...
00:16:23
Find A Way Podcast
Thank
00:16:27
Priscilla Zanatelli
more than ever a driver actually for the business outcomes. um You know, the ah HR has to be in the table where the important decisions are made. And I think that that really changed.
00:16:39
Priscilla Zanatelli
In many years from many years um now, we are we have to be in the center of conversations about well-being, remote work, diversity, inclusion, so many important topics.
00:16:53
Priscilla Zanatelli
And H.I. thinks stopped being a support function and started seeing as the heart of the company. Of course, I'll say that I'm a new resources manager, but I think great leaders, you know companies from a great place to work, they in the companies that are voted great place to work,
00:17:02
Find A Way Podcast
Yeah.
00:17:09
Priscilla Zanatelli
ah ah from their employees, they tend to agree. And CEOs usually say, hey, I work side by side with human resources because we will only get great results if we treat our people well, because the people are responsible for the results. So I think it's said it's that. And in the future, if I'd say, i don't think it's more about talent management, but more about human sustainability.
00:17:35
Priscilla Zanatelli
So helping people thrive in a world of constant change. So the only thing we are sure of is things change. And I think that's the biggest challenge.
00:17:46
Priscilla Zanatelli
At the same time, our greatest opportunity.

Advice for HR Newcomers

00:17:49
Priscilla Zanatelli
If we know how to embrace that, we do great things.
00:17:53
Ingrid
So with all the experience that you have and now helping with your business, helping people thrive, what would you say that for newcomers to North America that are looking to grow their careers in ar what are the key skills or mindsets do you think they need to be successful today?
00:18:14
Priscilla Zanatelli
Probably embrace that learner's mindset, which also goes so with that other question about being humble. So the HR landscape in North America is very fast evolving.
00:18:28
Priscilla Zanatelli
So being curious, being open, being adaptable, um asking for feedback every time you can, I think is essential. especially when you're navigating through new systems, laws, and workplace norms. So I had to ask many questions. I had to learn. i mean, I know all the laws in Brazil. I had to learn it all over again, and I had to make a lot of questions.
00:18:54
Priscilla Zanatelli
I also think ah build a cultural fluency in the sense of understanding how we communicate, how others communicate. So it's different working with an American than working with an Indian than working with someone from South Africa. so And not only um not only people from other countries, because of course you have Brazilians that are, we're different from each other.
00:19:17
Priscilla Zanatelli
ah But still, i mean, having also that cultural fluency helps, and especially in this super connected world. And don't hide your background. I always say that it's people, your unique perspective matters. Your unique perspective is an asset.
00:19:34
Priscilla Zanatelli
And I'd probably say um the third one, it's I think human resources is not only about people, it's about it's how people drive results. So you have to learn how to speak, how to read data, know speak the language of business. You can't simply come to a meeting and say, oh, I think this is blah, blah, blah. mean, why do you think that? What is the data? What research have you read?
00:20:03
Priscilla Zanatelli
um what What supports what you think? And that that really helps, especially in male-oriented industries. They usually really like numbers.
00:20:13
Find A Way Podcast
Thank you.
00:20:15
Priscilla Zanatelli
And that's kind of how I started to be heard also, because I would say something, man would say something else, and in you a very humble way, I'd say, oh, but, you know, the numbers show a different perspective.
00:20:29
Priscilla Zanatelli
So I think that really helps. And, of course, build relationships. So network, communication. you you make your career growth through, you know, that coffee, through that event that you went showing up and contributing. So I think that's it.
00:20:48
Find A Way Podcast
Now we're going to dive into some more

Defining Personal Success

00:20:50
Find A Way Podcast
personal questions. And the first one we have for you, Pri, what is success for you?
00:20:51
Priscilla Zanatelli
Okay.
00:20:57
Priscilla Zanatelli
Oh, okay. i I love talking about that one because for me, success is when you look back in your life and you smile. And not because everything was perfect. Nobody has a perfect life. But, you know, you're proud of your journey, your growth, the impact that you made along the way.
00:21:16
Priscilla Zanatelli
So for me, success is no matter what your history were was, you look back and you smile. You're a successful person.
00:21:25
Ingrid
And if you could have dinner with any person alive or dead, who would that be?
00:21:32
Priscilla Zanatelli
I'll probably choose a live one because maybe she'll hear podcast and she'll find me interested enough to to invite me to to lunch.
00:21:37
Find A Way Podcast
so
00:21:41
Priscilla Zanatelli
I'd say Oprah, Oprah Winfrey. I deeply admire her story as a black woman overcoming so many barriers and she really turned her challenges into strength.
00:21:53
Priscilla Zanatelli
I think she's a very powerful example for us women and what it means to be self-made and purpose-driven women. So I probably have a long lunch with Oprah.
00:22:04
Find A Way Podcast
Me too. I, I, I'd really like to meet her.
00:22:06
Priscilla Zanatelli
I'll invite you, Beatriz.
00:22:08
Find A Way Podcast
Thank you.
00:22:08
Priscilla Zanatelli
I'll invite you to

Integrating Women in Teams

00:22:10
Find A Way Podcast
Thank you.
00:22:11
Find A Way Podcast
And Priya, if you could choose a superpower, what would it be and why?
00:22:17
Priscilla Zanatelli
I probably want to be invisible.
00:22:21
Priscilla Zanatelli
and go to you know get-togethers or meetings that I'm not invited there's so much information mean when you have ah more information you tend to make better decisions so I mean there's so many things that are unspoken in the work environment that are um hidden in context and if I could hear What people were saying about the company, about each other, about the team, about the leaders, or in my house, what my kids are saying when they're not in front of me, I think you'd help me make faster smarter choices, faster and smarter decisions.
00:22:59
Ingrid
I love that. And i think that the next question connects well with you So our previous guest always leaves a question for the next guest.

Rapid-Fire Questions

00:23:08
Ingrid
And the question that we have for you today is how can we integrate more women into our teams and make workplaces more equitable?
00:23:16
Priscilla Zanatelli
Okay, um that's also a diversity topic and I think we really need to recognize that women, and especially us mothers, we face unique expectations. I mean, um the market often expect us to to work like we don't have children and we're also expected to parent as if we didn't have jobs.
00:23:41
Priscilla Zanatelli
So it's kind of impossible because it's an impossible equation because we do have jobs and we do have kids and we want to be there for our kids.
00:23:43
Find A Way Podcast
Thank
00:23:48
Priscilla Zanatelli
So I think if we companies started creating more women-friendly um policies, and I wouldn't even use the word women, I would say family-friendly policies, because if I use the word women, it also seems like it's the woman's responsibility to take care of the family when it's really, you know, it has to be, it should be 50-50%, although we know it's not exactly like that nowadays when both parents work.
00:24:17
Priscilla Zanatelli
ah outside their home. So I think that's what I would do, create more family friendly policies, environment, so everybody can go to work and, you know, be their best when they're there and get home and be their best when they're home without feeling guilty or feeling that they should be elsewhere.
00:24:37
Find A Way Podcast
The feeling

Anecdotes and Closing Remarks

00:24:38
Find A Way Podcast
like we're never doing enough, right? I agree. um We're moving into some rapid fire questions. What we do, we give you two options and you choose one that best aligns with you.
00:24:49
Find A Way Podcast
Okay. Morning person or night to owl.
00:24:56
Priscilla Zanatelli
but I kind of had to adapt to a morning person in in our world. Night owl, if I could choose.
00:25:03
Ingrid
Introvert or extrovert?
00:25:06
Priscilla Zanatelli
Extrovert, but i super value my quiet times, my alone time, my no kids, no husband time.
00:25:16
Find A Way Podcast
Phone call or text message?
00:25:19
Priscilla Zanatelli
um Text message, definitely. I'm hard of hearing, so ah texting is my go-to because I always read. So please don't call me, just text me.
00:25:34
Ingrid
Dancing or singing?
00:25:37
Priscilla Zanatelli
Dancing while singing, can I have that one? Although I think people would probably ask me to stop singing, but I would do both.
00:25:47
Find A Way Podcast
And Pri, if you could give us one or two book recommendations, we always take those um notes for our guests and for our own sake, because we enjoy reading. So what would those be?
00:26:00
Priscilla Zanatelli
Well, I always watch the poche podcast, so I know you guys asked that. And the first one that I would recommend is this one right here, The Soul of Money by Lynn Twist.
00:26:12
Priscilla Zanatelli
I think this book really helped me shift the way that I see wealth, um the way that I see fulfillment, the way that I see ah scarcity.
00:26:22
Priscilla Zanatelli
So it's not so much about what you have, but how aligned your money is with your values. So this one is a great book.
00:26:34
Priscilla Zanatelli
And the second one, I mean, i'm one fiction, one nonfiction, I'd probably say The Silent Patient. Our brother told us it was a good book and it's super fun. It's ah ripping full of twists and um our reminder that actually stories are rarely what they seem at surface.
00:26:54
Priscilla Zanatelli
And it's it's always deeper. People always have um deeper deeper questions, a deeper So those ah deeper self so but two
00:27:04
Find A Way Podcast
um pretty And before we step into the next steps of the closing the chapter and all of that, I just want to highlight here on the on the episode that Priscilla is a really great role model to have while growing up.
00:27:19
Find A Way Podcast
She is something that I, um she taught me that term, which is ah immunity to, um, How do you translate that? It's like immunity to rejection.
00:27:31
Find A Way Podcast
Priscilla is a person that has always grown up with immunity to rejection that I've always looked looked up to. She is her authentic self, ah the way she shows up, the way she talks, the way she enters the spaces she's in.
00:27:46
Find A Way Podcast
So it's really fortunate to have a role model like you growing up. So thank you for being on this podcast today.
00:27:52
Priscilla Zanatelli
oh

Okay, so um probably ah what part of your culture, since it's a podcast for immigrants only, what part of your culture do you carry with you and carry with you in your business and how that shaped the way that you lead people, the way they interact people. So I think that's a good question.

Oh, I just, really want to thank you guys. I do watch the episodes. I think it's a great opportunity for people to talk about such different um challenges and what they go through and actually motivate others to be an immigrant, to try their lives in another country. It is so rich for the family, for the kids, for ourselves. So I love the channel.
