Struggles with Pottery in High School

Now, if you allow me to tell you a story before, I kind of get to my point a little bit and get to my steps. So back when I was a senior in high school, this is my second year of taking a ceramics class at my high school.

And I was kind of struggling a little bit. I wasn't the best yet at making pottery. I was pretty crappy. And everything was really hard and it took a long time to really make anything.
00:00:44
Speaker
And I remember me and my friend, we were both having kind of the same struggles. We were both around the same level and we were just struggling to kind of make simple things like a mug or a vase or just really anything. We were just kind of struggling with that.
Learning the Art of Connection

And I remember my pottery teacher at the time,
00:01:05
Speaker
He came over to us and he starts talking to us. And my friend asked me a question. He said, do you have any tips that can help us with our throwing a little bit? And I remember it so clearly. He said, are your hands connected? And when he said that, I kind of thought a little bit. I didn't pay much attention to it, but then he showed us what he meant by having our hands connected.
00:01:32
Speaker
So he got on the wheel and he literally showed us, it took him like two minutes, I swear, it was so fast. And he showed us what he was doing with his hands, how his hands were connected to the clay and they were connected. And that helped so much because you could see that when your hands are connected, it makes everything that much easier.
00:01:58
Speaker
And after he said that, that improved my pottery like super quick. Like I was able to start making more and more things that I actually wanted to make that were actually kind of in my brain and then I wanted to come to life. And after he said that, that got me thinking a little bit.
00:02:16
Speaker
It stuck in my mind so much that like, he's so right. That pottery is literally all about a connection. If you don't have that connection, you are gonna be lost in pottery. It's gonna be super hard. And you need to be able to find that connection. You need to be able to find your connection to your pottery to sell your pottery to everything. So how do you find that connection?
Mastering Control through Connection
00:02:41
Speaker
Well, if you are throwing on the wheel
00:02:45
Speaker
you have to find the connection from your body to the clay. Because if you are all loose with it, your arms are all loose, the clay is going to do whatever it wants. But if you are stronger with your connection to your
00:03:03
Speaker
where you're placing your elbows and where you're placing your arms, it's gonna be a much easier time because that connection to the clay is stronger. It's not so loose. So you need to get a strong connection with your clay first if you're trying to make anything. And as soon as you find that connection, it's gonna be a lot easier for you. It's gonna be everything is gonna kind of flow together like how it should be. You're suddenly gonna be easier
00:03:32
Speaker
Your pooling is gonna be easier. Everything's gonna be easier. When I'm centering and pooling too, I like to kind of think of it how when we're using a pencil to write on a piece of paper, write our name on a piece of paper, what is happening with our elbows and with our hand and everything when we're writing on a piece of paper? Well, the connection is the paper to the pencil, pencil to your hand.
00:04:03
Speaker
And everything right there is connection. And then everything is kind of close in. If you go too far away from the paper, your handwriting is gonna suck. If you go closer in, you're gonna have more control and more of a connection with the paper to the pencil to your hand.
Connection in Sales and Audience Engagement

Speaker
Another thing that I also like to bring up is, it's a little bit of a physical essence, I guess. This is called Newton's Third Law. And basically what it states is,
00:04:34
Speaker
Whatever I'm touching, it's touching me back. That is the connection right there. So you have to find that connection with your pottery and anything else.
00:04:46
Speaker
When you are making a social media post to try to sell your pottery, you need to build that connection with your audience so that it is going to be a lot easier so that they are actually going to want to buy from you. If you don't establish that connection first, then it's going to be pretty awful to try to sell your pottery. Thank you. I hope you gained a lot of knowledge from this
