Introduction & Special Segment Announcement

Speaker
Welcome to the Clued in Mystery podcast. I'm Sarah. And I'm Brooke. And we both love mystery. Hi Brooke. Hi Sarah. How are you today? I'm good. Thank you. How are you? I'm great. And I'm excited about what we have to share today.
00:00:28
Speaker
Well, it's not a full episode, but it is part of the conversation that we had with Francis and Sherry from last week that spilled over into talking a bit about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. And I thought it would be great to share it with our listeners because next week we have the first of a couple of episodes where we talk a little bit more in depth about him and his work.

Speaker
Yeah, it's a great lead in to Sherlock and Doyle. I hope you guys enjoy.

Poirot vs. Sherlock: A Comparative Analysis

00:01:02
Speaker
Frances Sherry, do you have any final words on Agatha? Well, Roe is better than Sherlock Holmes and I can't believe I just said that. I find that because you did ask me when you sent my questions to me about Sherlock and I don't find him as versatile as Christie. No.
00:01:22
Speaker
No, I will agree. I would agree. And going back to Sherry's first comment about readability and that sort of thing, I mean, it's hard to write simply. Yes, it is. And Doyle did not write simply, in my opinion.
00:01:41
Speaker
I would agree. I think Christy's work is a lot more accessible than Doyle's.

Character Study: Poirot and Sherlock - Egos, Sidekicks, and Styles

00:01:47
Speaker
Exactly. The similarities between Sherlock and Poirot are there. They're both abusive to their sidekicks. They're both egomaniacs. Whereas Poirot, his deductive reasoning is natural, whereas Sherlock's is usually drug-induced. Both amazing characters, but both jerks.
00:02:10
Speaker
And Agatha didn't like Poirot. She thought he was bombastic and arrogant. And he was. And that's probably why I love him. Which is fun to write, right? It gives the character some depth. Yeah. And fun to read. Yes.

The Appeal of Poirot: Character Depth and Storylines

00:02:27
Speaker
Yes. Right. But I think that's that's probably one of the reasons that people still enjoy reading him. Right. Is because he's got a lot of depth and is quite interesting. I always forget that he didn't have Hastings all the time.
00:02:40
Speaker
No, he didn't. She married Hastings off, didn't she? Hastings was in the, he comes back in a curtain. Yeah. And he went to South America and then comes back for curtain, another full circle. I hope you liked that mini episode. We'll be back next week with a full episode, the first in our series about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
