Avoiding Burnout in Pottery Creation

00:00:13
Speaker
What is up Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here and it's an episode of Shaping Your Pottery. I'm going to be talking about ways that you can make making pottery easier for yourself so that finding your voice is a little bit easier and you can keep on doing it without getting burnt out.

Discussion with Rosie Shelton on Pottery Efficiency

00:00:29
Speaker
I just had a really great conversation with Rosie Shelton
00:00:33
Speaker
And in this conversation, we were talking about ways to make making pottery easier for yourself while still being able to hold your own unique voice and still be able to make your own unique voice. So Rosie is a hand builder. She hand builds all of her pots and what she was doing was she noticed that it was taking a really long time to make just one single pot because hand building takes a long time.
00:01:03
Speaker
So she came up with the idea to make a really big hand built
00:01:08
Speaker
pot that she was making and then she made it to completion where it's completely glazed and then she would slip cast that giant big piece of mug or that whatever she was making so that she could complete Continue repeatedly make those those Mugs and whatever she made continuously while freeing up time to work on other things so she goes on to explain that

The Role of Slip Casting in Pottery Production

00:01:38
Speaker
She says that I could make one piece, one mug at a time and hand built it all at once and only make one mug per hour because I'm hand building. Or I could go on and slip cast five different mugs and wait an hour and I'll have five different things done while having that slip cast done. And I think this is a really powerful way to look at your pottery. If you are
00:02:07
Speaker
kind of more of a production type of potter and you tend to make the same thing over again but you enjoy that what if you made one like model sample and you got that slip cast
00:02:22
Speaker
And then you use those slip casts to make those things that you know are either selling really well or that people just resonate with and that you also kind of like to make as well.

Exploring New Pottery Designs with Time Saved

00:02:34
Speaker
And you keep on making those through slip casting, but you use the time that when you are slip casting or you are other, whatever other ways you use to speed up or make things easier for yourself. And you use that time to create new things that you want to create
00:02:51
Speaker
new things that you think will look good and try to experiment. A lot of people get it wrong when they think they have to stick with the same thing over and over again and make one pot the same way every single time. You don't have to make the one pot the same way every single time. If you can find ways to make things easier for yourself, then you're gonna go a lot further because it's gonna free up so much time for you to focus on things that really matter.
00:03:20
Speaker
If you want to start making a new line of pottery, try slip casting one of your pots that you know sells really well and slip cast a bunch of those so that when you are waiting for the slip cast to dry, you are working on things that you want to push further with your work. And then eventually once you find that thing that you like and you think is able to sell, then you continue making those things.
00:03:49
Speaker
If you can find ways to make pottery easier for yourself, then you can find ways to find your voice a lot more efficient and make time to experiment.
