Personal Story: Running and Collecting Herbs
00:00:46
Speaker
I was like, I'm gonna go for a little run. Got dressed. Got everything. And I was like, I want to pick some dandelions and some dead nettle because there's a ton of it out in these fields that I run through on the way back. So I can dry the dead nettle for tea and stuff and the dandelions I use for like wine and salads and all that.
00:01:06
Speaker
So I was like, perfect. Puts a little bag in my pocket, goes out and I use like Nike run club. So I was like, I picked like an easy 25 minute, like headspace run kind of thing. So I was like, okay, perfect. Like it's a little bit longer than we normally use on the trail, but there's like tons of trails. So I'll just keep going. So I got to like where I would normally like turn around, like if we take the dogs, cause you don't want to take them on like too far of a walk, you know?
00:01:31
Speaker
So I got to that point and I was like, like there's like three different ways I could have gone. So I was like, okay, I'm going to go right. And then like, I got to another split and I was like, all right, I'm going to go left. Then I got to another one. I was like, I'm going to go right. And I basically ran that all the way to the main road, like just the trail stops. There's no more trail. And so I was like, perfect turn around. I'll finish out the last, like.
00:01:55
Speaker
I had like less than 10 minutes of this run. So I was like, I'll finish this like last 10 minutes and then my cool down time all like forage on the way back. So
Getting Lost: Humorous Navigation Mishap
00:02:06
Speaker
I turn around and I start running back and I completely omit the middle turn in my mind on the way back. So instead of like going
00:02:16
Speaker
because I went right, left, right. So instead of going left, right, left, I just went left, left. And I'm like going and going and going. And I'm like, none of this is looking familiar.
00:02:26
Speaker
They're wearing horses last time. Oh my God. I was just like, what happened? So I talked to her like, and I was like, I'm definitely lost. And she was like, oh no. And I'm like, uh, I'll figure it out. It's fine. I'm like, look, there's horses, you know, like sending her pictures of my lost journey through the fields of Germany. So I like go back down and I'm like,
00:02:54
Speaker
I think maybe I'll just go this direction. So I like go in another direction and I'm like going and I'm like, none of this still looks familiar. So I like go back and because like this one, there was like a four way fork. And I don't remember there being a fourth option. And so like when I went, I just went the wrong way. And when I came back, I took the fourth option that I didn't even realize was there when I came through. So then I was like, I have no, I was like in a town somewhere. I'm like, this is not Schweitelbach.
00:03:27
Speaker
I had to pull up the map and put it on walking because if I put it on the regular, it would be like the main roads basically, which I didn't want to go all the way down the main road, walk through town. So I put it on walking and it was like, oh, go down and then make the left. And I was like, oh my God, I forgot about the middle turn. Yeah.
Divinatory Tools: Scrying and Pendulums
00:03:45
Speaker
I was just like, Oh my gosh, it was supposed to be a 25 minute run. And then I was going to use like five to 10 minutes to like forage on my way back turned into 62 minutes.
00:03:58
Speaker
Oh my god. Well, I'm glad you made it back home, Jesus. And I'm glad you brought your phone. Like, could you imagine? Oh my gosh. On my way eventually. Eventually. You were lost for like an hour. But I got lots of dead metal and dandelions. Well, you know what? Yeah, it worked out. Jesus.
00:04:24
Speaker
But yeah, yeah, I spent a good portion of my rotten being lost not knowing how to get back home. Yeah. Well, now though, there's this part like that we normally when we walk the dogs on it, we take them on about like, we try to keep their walks under three miles, just unless we're just like going out for the day for them to play. So like we normally will go down, you have to cut through this like,
00:04:50
Speaker
there's this path that goes along this farmer's field that's part of the trail. So you leave the trail, you go through the field, and then you cross the road at this traffic circle. And there's a soccer team out here called FCCA. And so there's a little box that someone painted at the traffic circle that has one FCK. And so that is the marker that I found that I was like, oh my god, I know where I'm at. I was walking and I saw the box, and I was like, ah, I found the way.
00:05:20
Speaker
Take a picture. I know where I'm at now and he likes to sleep just half a mile away now. He just got. It's like when you've already been gone for so long. Another half mile. But I didn't take water with me either because I was like, Oh, it's just a 25 minute like run.
00:05:41
Speaker
So I drink some water before I left and I was like, I'll be fine. Like while I'm running, I won't need like a camel back or anything. And then like, you know, I get lost in the field and I'm like, it's so hot. I'm so thirsty. Yeah. Yeah. So I was lost. I was lost in the fields. I did find my way home. It was a little toasty. Yeah. It sounds, it sounds love. It sounds like I would hate it, but
00:06:04
Speaker
But it feels great. And there's a lot of flowers and plants and apparently horses and all sorts of horses. And some weird giant bird that I've never seen in my life before. This thing was huge. I was like, please don't be a predator. And please don't think I'm dying. I'm just lost. I'm not on the brink of death. Thank you. No. No, I had a great time. I had a great time out there by myself.
00:06:30
Speaker
I love that. So I would advise, you know, always keep your phone whenever you go for a run, especially if you're taking your trials. Right. Yes. Yeah, that. Yes. Definitely keep your phone and just be prepared for anything. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But
00:06:47
Speaker
We're not talking about me being lost, which is probably something that could be talked about for hours because I never. What are we talking about today? We're talking about pendulums and scrying, which you could have used that.
00:07:04
Speaker
to get home. I was the lost object. Have you like as an Anthony back at the house like, okay, let's do some scrying. We got to find her. I'm just glad that they did it. There wasn't like a search party. Right? Yeah. Could you imagine?
00:07:31
Speaker
Anthony had like gone to the grocery store during this and so like he had no clue and he got home and he was like, your wife is lost. And then I show up and he's like, I'm glad you made it. So no pendulums or scrying needed to be done. I made it. That's good. I'm glad. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So to kick us off, I'm going to talk about some pendulums and then Sam's going to talk about scrying.
00:08:00
Speaker
So just a little like background in history, the use of pendulums is definitely not a new concept and historians have continued to discover evidence of their use throughout thousands of time periods. Historically, pendulums have been used by the oracles of Delphi.
00:08:17
Speaker
around like 400 BCE by French explorers, by mathematicians in the 1600s, and Italian scientists in the 1500s. And there's also evidence of the use of pendulums in ancient China during the reign of the pharaohs of Egypt and within the ancient Roman Empire.
00:08:34
Speaker
I think this also goes without saying that the use of pendulums across history is seen across many different cultures, which I think was pretty evident in what I just said. But evidence of the use of pendulums can also be seen in the Greek, Hindu, and Hebrew cultures, just to name a few more. And oddly enough,
00:08:52
Speaker
this reached span to Roman Catholic priests, to abbots and bishops, and there's even stories of leaders within the Roman Catholic Church researching pendulums and the use of dowsing rods that date as far back as the 17th century. As with anything that kind of like falls into a like divinatory category, I guess, of course there's going to be historical skepticism,
00:09:17
Speaker
So around 1300 CE, Pope John XXII began persecuting like quote-unquote witches that used the pendulum for divinatory practice as the church saw the pendulum as a form of divination and connected its use to the devil as well as worshiping and working with Satan. This led them to become forbidden until around the mid-1700 CE.
00:09:39
Speaker
In 1833, Michel-Eugène Chavrol researched the movement of the pendulum and came to the conclusion that involuntary and subconscious muscular reactions are responsible for the movement of the pendulum. And the pendulum actually became the earliest piece of evidence that allowed science to define idiomotor reflex.
00:10:00
Speaker
So while there's a lot of speculation about the validity of pendulums and the answers they give us, there's something to say about transferring your own energy to items like tarot cards, scrying mirrors, runes, or even pendulums, and then being able to build that relationship with that item when it comes to a divinatory practice. It's this exchange of energy and relationship that has been built into the belief of the use of pendulums specifically in terms of divinatory practices and witchcraft.
00:10:28
Speaker
So when we shift into, like, the use of the pendulum, pendulums are incredibly easy to use, and this makes them extremely accessible to the general public wanting to get into divinatory practice. And there are various ways to make a pendulum on your own without spending any money, like using a regular old string and a paperclip or tying your wedding band
00:10:49
Speaker
or just any ring in general onto a ribbon. As with any tool that you use within your craft, you should always cleanse it before using it in whatever cleansing method that you use in your own practice. I typically like smoke cleansing with either like sage, palacento, or incense, but like do whatever feels right to you. And just like with your tarot cards, you should also spend time with your pendulum to help it like get to know you and to let it take on your energy.
00:11:18
Speaker
So while I have a pendulum, personally, I have yet to use it. I got it like I did like this witchy self care class with Jenn and Alexis and they gave us like this little box that had like a scrying mirror, a pendulum, dice, it was like a bunch of like divinatory things to use for self care and I've like literally never used them but I love that though. I know.
00:11:42
Speaker
I know we actually jokingly use the dice for like when we don't know where we want, like if we want to go get food because we don't feel like cooking and we can't decide which place, we'll be like, okay, this place is one, this place is two and we just let the dice choose.
00:11:57
Speaker
that I think is a perfect use of the dice to be fair. Yeah. So I have a pendulum. I haven't used it yet. But what I can tell you is that anytime I get a new tarot deck, I make sure that my deck has plenty of time to get to know me and to absorb my energy before I use it for myself. So I'll sleep with my deck on my nightstand next to me. I'll put it in my purse when I'm out running errands during the day. Or I'll even just spend time shuffling it so that it gets
00:12:25
Speaker
some one-on-one time like absorbing my energy for when I like use it in my own practice and I feel like that transfer of energy or like spending time and building that relationship could be used with any tool so you could do that with your pendulum too. So pendulums respond to your body's own energetic
00:12:42
Speaker
field in conjunction with your higher self and your intuition. The belief is that this reaction provokes a jerk reflex in your arm and your wrist that allows the pendulum to move in a certain way, which is what we were talking about earlier that's referred to as the idiomoto reflex.
00:12:59
Speaker
Something that tends to vary within the use of pendulums is whether you use a single pendulum versus having different pendulums for different situations. And this seemed to be a topic that was like split down the middle from what I could find in my research. So some people feel that using a single pendulum
00:13:16
Speaker
gives them a better connection to the pendulum itself and then makes them feel more secure in their divination. Whereas like others feel that you should use different pendulums that have ties to the type of questions that you're asking and they feel that that makes it more effective. And the different pendulums like a lot of what I was reading it's based on like if you haven't seen a pendulum most of the time it's a chain with like a crystal on the bottom and so like their thought is using crystals that have
00:13:44
Speaker
connections to whatever it is that you're seeking out, whether it's questions about self-love or just love in general. It might be a pendulum with a rose quartz on the end of it. So tying that connection to whatever it is that you're trying to ask, they feel having multiple makes that more effective. I don't think there's a right or wrong in this. I think it's more
00:14:07
Speaker
how you feel. So don't beat yourself up over like, I only have one pendulum, you know, I'm doing this wrong. No, you're not do whatever feels right, as we always say. And then part of this as well, like some people feel like making your own pendulum makes it more effective. And an example that I found, like specifically for this is like, if you're asking questions that are relationship based, like if it's a marital affair, like,
00:14:33
Speaker
they say using a wedding ring on a ribbon is going to be more effective than using a regular pendulum. So again, I don't know that that's necessarily true. Maybe because it's your ring, you wear it all the time, so there's more energy in it. But
00:14:49
Speaker
If you have that relationship built with your pendulum and you feel more comfortable just using your pendulum, there's, again, no right or wrong way to do what feels right to you. To use your pendulum, you first need to come up with options for the answers that you're seeking.
00:15:04
Speaker
So these can be as simple as yes or no, or I don't know, or they can be more in depth and tailored to your specific question. But once these answers are written out on a piece of paper, given a space somewhere, you then would hold your pendulum above the paper and ask your questions.
00:15:22
Speaker
And a good start would be to ask your pendulum to show you what each of these options look like, like all of the options that you've spelled out. So something as simple as saying, show me what a yes looks like, or show me a no, and watch the movement of your pendulum. And while pendulums are often used to divine answers to specific questions you're seeking, pendulums are also often used to locate lost items.
00:15:48
Speaker
So finding an item can be achieved by asking a series of questions that lead you to the item.
00:15:54
Speaker
You can also use pendulums in matters of manifestation. Most of the work in manifesting with a pendulum works with the law of attraction by using the pendulum's natural connection with the subconscious to bring it into alignment with your conscious desires. When the conscious and the subconscious are in agreement in a positive way, manifestations are thought to happen pretty quickly. You can also focus on whatever it is that you're wanting to bring into or even remove from your life.
00:16:22
Speaker
begin with a normal preparation for your pendulum work and then think about what it is that you're wanting to bring into your life. You would then ask the pendulum if you're currently in an energetic space to make that happen. If the pendulum says no, you can ask it what sort of changes you might need to make to bring in your desired outcome, but they need to be very like yes or no specific questions. So that like the typical movements are going to be like a straight line moving back and forth, left to right, moving
00:16:51
Speaker
to and from your body, a circular like clockwise motion.
00:16:56
Speaker
or a counterclockwise motion. And then there's the option that you might ask it a question and it doesn't move at all, which I think is so weird because think of how steady you would have to be to not create any movement if it's based on your own bodies, reactions to the question. So when I was reading that, I was like, oh, just to think about it not even moving, it's almost like creepy. That would freak me out. Right?
00:17:25
Speaker
you as a human, you're never completely 100% motionless. We breathe, we blink, there's gotta be some movement. So just to think about it not moving at all is so weird to me.
00:17:38
Speaker
So just some examples, like with this, just please remember it can vary depending on the layout that you use for your answers, whether that's like a piece of paper that you write it on or a pre-printed board that you use or even just your intuition. Because apparently some people too don't even like lay out a yes or no or whatever. They'll just be like, okay, yes is going to be this, no is going to be that, like, and they just watch it.
Techniques and Beliefs in Pendulum Use
00:18:03
Speaker
brain could never. I'd be like, what did I choose again? I need to see it. So if a pendulum doesn't move at all, a lot of the time this would be considered a no, but this could vary depending on the person. Clockwise usually means that the answer is yes. Well, counterclockwise would be a no because
00:18:22
Speaker
like yes and no are always opposite of each other. If your board or paper has a yes set to a spot and a no to another space, the pendulum would then swing repeatedly to the answer depending on the space. And then like I was saying like some people don't use a board or paper with set answers but just like they set those parameters in their head so they would set an idea of a yes, a no, a maybe, etc. like what it means to them and then they would use that idea of the movement of the pendulum. Alternatively,
00:18:52
Speaker
You could ask your pendulum to answer the questions based on what you want them to be. So you could just say, if the answer is yes, swing vertical. If the answer is no, swing horizontal. But if the answer is unknown, swing in a clockwise motion, like telling the pendulum exactly what you want it to do. You could also move your pendulum in the respective directions, telling the pendulum like, hey, this is a yes, this is a no, like while you're swinging it in those directions.
00:19:21
Speaker
And while yes and no are pretty straightforward, I don't know or answer unknown can be a little different. So questions need to be formed in a direct yes or no answer fashion. So say if you asked a this or that question, like it's not going to be able to answer that. If you're asking a question that is able to be answered in a yes or no format and it's coming up unknown,
00:19:45
Speaker
then you have to take into account that the pendulum is breaking your question down into small specifics and you need to word your question into a very specific yes or no question. So for example, you couldn't ask your pendulum if you should move to New York or Los Angeles, but you could ask about each place separately. You would just need to ask, should I move to New York? Wait for that answer.
00:20:08
Speaker
Should I move to Los Angeles and wait for that answer? You should also pay attention to how enthusiastically the pendulum swings or moves. The more dramatic the answer, the happier you're likely to be with the answers outcomes within your life.
00:20:23
Speaker
So when you're trying to differentiate between two scenarios and your answers, you should also know whether or not your answers are the same for each of the same movements. So if this is the case, then you definitely like ask more questions. But like, like say in the scenario of, should I move to Los Angeles or New York? If you say, should I move to Los Angeles? And it's saying yes. And it's, you know, just kind of like comfortably swinging.
00:20:50
Speaker
And then you're like, should I move to New York? And it's doing the same, like same speed. Nothing's more enthusiastic, but it's still also saying yes. It might just be that like really you can move wherever. It's just that you need to get out of the space that you're in. And so asking it more follow-up questions to kind of figure that out and help you understand more like for that scenario, if that makes sense. And then just a few things to remember with
00:21:17
Speaker
pendulums, you need to take your time. The pendulum might move immediately or it might take a few minutes or even a few tries before you start seeing movement. That makes any sense. So don't get discouraged and just remember to build that relationship with your pendulum.
00:21:31
Speaker
Once you've established what a yes or no looks like for your pendulum, bring it to a complete stop before asking another question. And just remember that a no will be the opposite of yes. Sometimes a pendulum will have its own agenda and it will either not move at all or it will move in a weird direction that doesn't like really pinpoint what you're looking for.
00:21:53
Speaker
sometimes it'll swing like wild. This means that the answers aren't like they're basically unclear at this time and that maybe you should take a step back and revisit your questions or your requests later. A poorly worded question can get an inaccurate answer, so make sure you're really like thinking your questions through and wording them appropriately and with your intentions. And the use of pendulums
00:22:18
Speaker
Should not be stressful this particular divinatory practice is pretty foolproof and it should be treated as so if your Intention or your gut is telling you that the answer is unclear. Just take a step back reformat your questions and be more precise
00:22:34
Speaker
with a clear-cut yes or no answer. And if it's still unclear, start asking other questions to really understand what it is that you should be doing based on what you're asking. But that's pendulums. Wow, that's interesting. Yeah. Learn
Scrying: History and Techniques
00:22:52
Speaker
some new things that I didn't really know about pendulums.
00:22:55
Speaker
Yeah, I like I knew how they were used. I just didn't know like, I didn't know the end depths of it, the N's and L's. So it was really interesting to research it. And to see that it was like, pendulums had been used like within the church and the abbeys and stuff. Yeah, that is interesting. Of course. Rude.
00:23:14
Speaker
They're like, witches can't use them, but we can. Yeah. So to kind of take a little, I mean, it's not really the same thing. The only thing that they really have in common is that they're both divinatory practices. So I'm going to talk about scrying. So scrying is an ancient divination practice that has been used for centuries.
00:23:37
Speaker
History is diverse related to scrying, and it dates back to many different ancient civilizations. And it's been practiced in many different cultures throughout the world to include the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Celts, and Native Americans. And the earliest documented accounts of scrying actually came from ancient Babylonia. The people in that region scried using Lecanomancy, where they essentially placed oil and water into a bowl to read shapes and movements.
00:24:07
Speaker
And so some of the most notable practitioners of scrying include Nostradamus John Dee, who actually didn't practice scrying buddies,
00:24:16
Speaker
constantly talked about and mentioned with scrying, and I'll get to that in a second, and Aleister Crowley. John Dee served as an advisor to Queen Elizabeth I in the 16th century in England, and he actually didn't practice scrying, but he was often associated with the practice because he had an associate who he worked with named Edward Kelly. His associate was the one that was the seer and actually practiced scrying.
00:24:41
Speaker
John Dee based his advice to Queen Elizabeth on his mathematical calculations from an astrological perspective. And so people often, I guess, correlate him with scrying because of that, because he was, you know, giving her predictions and whatnot.
00:24:58
Speaker
Not to say that he wasn't immersed in the occult because he actually was and spent a lot of time traveling and exploring the world and learning about different practices, but Kelly, his associate, on the other hand, practiced scrying with a crystal globe. Nostradamus is also, you know, like I just mentioned, he is the most recognizable scryer in history. He was an astrologer and physician in 16th century France.
00:25:23
Speaker
And he made a lot of predictions, and it is commonly believed that through his practices, he predicted the Twin Towers bombings, the French Revolution, the Great Fire of London, and the death of Henry II.
00:25:36
Speaker
So a little bit more about scrying. The word scry comes from the old English word descry, which means to reveal or to make out. Scrying typically involves gazing into reflective surfaces in order to receive messages and visions of the past, present, or future.
00:25:54
Speaker
So why would you want to use scrying as a divinatory process? There are many different reasons why you would want to use scrying. You can use scrying to read for others, to connect again with the past, present, and future. You could also use scrying as a way to amplify the energies of symbols, sigils, and seals during rites. So if you were to use a crystal ball, for instance, you could take the sigil that you've used, just as an example, place it under the crystal ball
00:26:22
Speaker
the crystal ball so that the sphere magnifies the sigil and it'll be magnified and like flipped like so it'd be like upside down but it would like magnify whatever it is that you've drawn which i think is kind of cool and you can also use it to connect with deities and spirits
00:26:38
Speaker
So as far as scrying tools, there are many different tools that you can use for scrying. The crystal ball is the one that I think most of us think about whenever we think of scrying. It's the most iconic of the scrying tools. And crystal balls are usually made out of quartz or gemstones. And they're the most common scrying method when you think about it, like, you know, in like movies and shit like that.
00:27:03
Speaker
So using quartz as a crystal ball made out of quartz is said to amplify one's intention and to connect with higher realms. But you could also use black glass, obsidian, or amethyst as well if it's shaped into a crystal ball. In the past, crystal balls were leaded glass.
00:27:23
Speaker
And leaded glass was very popular because it produced spheres with less flaws in them. So it made it a little bit easier to read, but they were, I mean, like today, like even though they were really easy to find and, you know, cheaper back in the day, they are a lot harder to find today and apparently they're really fucking expensive. So just, I wouldn't, I wouldn't try and get a leaded crystal ball unless you really, really wanted one.
00:27:51
Speaker
another tool that you could use is a black mirror. And this is often referred to as a scrying mirror. A black mirror is basically just a reflective surface used to focus one's gaze on to access the subconscious mind. And this is usually like a picture frame, but the inside of the glass is painted black. And so you can make one of these at home. Like you could thrift your own frame and then just take the glass out and paint the inside of the glass black and put it back in there. And then there you go. You have your own scrying mirror.
00:28:20
Speaker
Another thing that you could use to scry with is called a black obsidian mirror. Now this is not to be confused with a black glass mirror. Black obsidian is the most ideal and highly suited tool for scrying because of its protection qualities and the fact that it is black. Because like lore surrounding like color theory and whatnot, the color black holds the symbolic property that everything potentially can be held within it, if that makes sense. So as a scryer wanting
00:28:49
Speaker
to see everything or like having the opportunity to see everything. If you're scrying and you're trying to connect with past, present, and future, it makes sense to want to use something black to do so. So with a black obsidian mirror, you want to make sure to protect it though before you actually use it. So Guiño from Exemplor discusses this in an article and it's linked in our show notes if you want more information. But
00:29:12
Speaker
What they say is essentially what you want to do is to take the mirror and hold it, then place your feet flat against the floor to ground yourself and look into the mirror and say, I am protected by this object and make sure you actually feel it and believe it. And so if you have to say it a few times to get that feeling and start to feel it like the totally fine. But once that's done, once you feel that you are protected by that object, you will then end with as by my intent. So it is done.
00:29:40
Speaker
And that's just a way to help protect you because anytime you're working with any of these divinatory things, especially with scrying, I feel like you definitely need to be making sure that you are using some sort of protection.
00:29:53
Speaker
I think that could go for pendulums too, because a lot of the pre-printed boards that you can use for them that have the yes and no answers also have other stuff, whether it's just letters to have it spell out. So it's very almost Ouija boardish in the setup in a lot of them. So definitely making sure that you're using those protections. That's a really good point to make.
00:30:17
Speaker
Yeah, these types of objects. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. And another tool that you can use for scrying is also water. This practice is known as hydromancy, and it involves gazing at a pool or water or really any body of water to include natural bodies of water like lakes, oceans, rivers, ponds, all that stuff.
00:30:38
Speaker
Also, you could use a bowl of ink because, again, ink usually is black, and you can use that as a way to scry with hydromancy as well. This method is used to trigger visions and insights, and the shifting water in a bowl of liquid can act as a gateway into the inner self. As I mentioned earlier when talking about lachinomancy, which is the practice of reading oil and water,
00:31:00
Speaker
This is a version of Hydromancy, and in some ancient cultures, they use flower and water as a form of Lacanomancy. Fire is another tool that is used in scrying, and this is also known as pyromancy. This involves observing flames in a controlled setting to give glimpses of the spiritual realm, and can invoke imagery and emotions, and this method is rooted in a lot of ancient traditions, so whenever we think back to some of these ancient,
00:31:26
Speaker
civilizations and their experiences with scrying, a lot of it involved fire. And then smoke is another tool that you can use with scrying. And this method involves interpreting the patterns and movement of smoke to provide divinatory insights. And often this involves a candle or incense. Both of these are great methods to read smoke. And then as far as the candle goes, it's not reading the flame because reading the flame would be pyromancy, but the smoke that the flame gives off, if that makes sense.
00:31:56
Speaker
And so aromancy, this involves interpreting the patterns and movements of the air, such as rustling of leaves or watching even birds fly. And then lastly, you could use, I mean, theoretically, any sort of black surface and especially matte surfaces. So oftentimes, scryers will use something that's more of a glossy surface, but matte surfaces can be used in scrying and it's actually
00:32:21
Speaker
really beneficial to scry with matte surfaces. Not everyone finds success with using a matte surface to scry on, so really you kind of probably have to try a couple of different methods to determine which one works best for you. But if you're wanting to test this out, the article that I was reading said that you can try it with a computer monitor, just like turn the computer monitor off and see if you have any luck with scrying with a matte surface because that is a perfect matte surface to use. So
00:32:47
Speaker
Moving on to some scrying techniques. There are different techniques to suit different preferences, and I'm just going to mention two of them. The first being objective scrying. With objective scrying, the scryer interprets different shapes or symbols that appear in the scrying tool, such as analyzing clouds in a crystal ball or shapes in a black mirror.
00:33:08
Speaker
The other type of technique that you could use whenever you're scrying is something called subjective scrying. This technique focuses on the intuitive and emotional responses of the scryer. It's also about the specific symbols that the scryer sees and more about the feelings and insights that the scryer picks up when scrying.
00:33:28
Speaker
So there are some things that you'll need if you want to start scrying. And so I've listed out kind of some things you need and brief little rundown of how to scry if you're wanting to test it out. So the first thing you're going to need is time, you need to have some time, like a good chunk of time where you can sit, you know, by yourself uninterrupted.
00:33:48
Speaker
to be able to practice scrying. You're also going to need a dimly lit room that makes it a little bit easier to kind of get in that head space. Some method of cleansing, whether that be sage, cedar, lavender, cinnamon, frankincense, any sort of, I mean, literally just whatever you use as your form of cleansing. You're also going to want some incense, and I'm going to go into a little bit detail about what kind of incense work
00:34:12
Speaker
best for scrying. And then you're also going to need one or more white candles. A chosen scrying medium, so all of those things that I mentioned above like with the crystal ball or a candle like outside of the white candles that you'll use for protection, but like a candle that you would use like if you were wanting to practice pyromancy or if you're wanting to practice like
00:34:37
Speaker
you know, the smoke method, looking at a matte surface, water, any of those things, whatever that medium is for scrying that you are interested in, make sure you have that. A journal and a pen, so something to write with and something to write on.
00:34:52
Speaker
And so, I mean, you can add to it and add more things to your board. Like you could even add like some of the articles I was reading, they were like, oh, you can add some keys or like skull or like bones, amethyst. And there's different with these different additives, like there's a different reason as to why you would want to bring them on to that surface that you're trying to scry on. But just for a basic beginners, like what you need, those are the basics.
00:35:20
Speaker
So going into how you scry, the first thing you're going to want to do is cleanse the space. And so you'll want to perform some sort of energy cleansing ritual to remove all the energies that will not serve your purpose for whatever you're scrying up for or whatever you're trying to accomplish with your scrying.
00:35:37
Speaker
You're also going to want to create an ambient space. So maybe before you cleanse a space, go ahead and do a clean up of wherever you're at. So make sure that the environment is clean and then make sure that you're in a space where it's easier for you to relax. So if you're in a space that's really cluttered or dirty, you're going to want to clean that up. Then you're going to take your candles.
00:35:57
Speaker
and you know whether that be the one white candle or multiple white candles and place them if you're using one go ahead and just place it on the side of the medium you're choosing for scrying um if you're using multiple you know kind of play around with the setup and figure out what the best spot is where you can get some light but not too much light
00:36:18
Speaker
and make sure you're placing the candle in a space that won't be distracting for you and won't be distracting for the medium that you're going to be using to scry because when you think about scrying essentially you're trying to like observe something and so you're staring at something for quite a long time and so if you're
00:36:37
Speaker
constantly distracted by a candle in your vision or like the images that the candle is bringing onto the method you're trying to scry with, that's going to be very distracting. So make sure you're placing it in a spot where it's not going to be distracting for you. And then you're going to burn any of the following for divinatory purposes. So whenever I mentioned the incense earlier,
00:37:00
Speaker
These are the incense I'm mentioning. So white sage, sandalwood, cinnamon, or dragon's blood are all great incense to use for scrying purposes.
00:37:09
Speaker
And when spirits are present, they say that the smoke from the incense will dance. And so it's a good idea to also maybe even keep your phone near you and take a few pictures of the smoke so that you can interpret the symbols and shapes whenever you're done scrying. Or if you're really good at like kind of drawing and sketching, you can even just sketch that in your journal as well. You're gonna wanna go into your scrying session with a question already ready. So have in your mind,
00:37:37
Speaker
what your end goal is, what you want to leave the scrying session knowing or what you want to have connected to. So you're going to want to hold the question in your mind as you gaze into the object at the beginning of your scrying session. And it's not necessary to think about the question constantly in your session and to keep repeating it over and over again, but you need to be able to open up your session with that question at the front of your mind. And then from there, you're just going to have to be fucking patient and wait for your answer.
00:38:06
Speaker
And this can take a while. And this is a form of divination that you should not rush. So if you don't have the time to adequately practice scrying, then you need to focus on maybe another divinatory process because this one might not be for you. And that's totally fine. But whenever I was reading more about scrying and listening to other people's experiences with scrying, they all say that it could take up to 20 to 30 minutes to
00:38:33
Speaker
get any sort of, I guess, not necessarily even just answer, but just to be able to get into that headspace where you're starting to be able to interpret the messages that you're being given. So if you don't have plenty of time, then you shouldn't engage with this divinatory process.
00:38:50
Speaker
And then lastly, you're going to want to interpret the messages. So with this, as you're scrying and as you're waiting for the messages to come through, you're going to write down what you see and know that you might not fully understand everything while you're scrying. So you may need to come back to it.
00:39:08
Speaker
and meditate on it maybe at a later date to really reconnect and understand what those messages are. And it could be a situation of say you're scrying, you don't understand what these messages are, you don't understand what the answers that you're being given or these messages. And so say you write them down and maybe at a later date, maybe at another session where you're scrying, it kind of makes a little bit more sense. Or maybe a conversation that you have with someone later, they bring up something that as you were scrying,
00:39:38
Speaker
you um divined during that session like it really just depends and it's a very fluid way of um receiving messages i feel like and honestly too it's going to be one of those things where you have to keep practicing like you're not going to begin scrying and immediately be an expert at it like everything takes practice and
00:39:58
Speaker
If some of these things don't come as naturally, that's totally fine. But you're going to want to make sure you write down any questions that you have and anything that comes to your mind or anything that you don't particularly understand and keep revisiting that so that you might be able to understand that at a later date.
00:40:14
Speaker
And once you're done scrying once the session is ended once you feel like things have kind of you know slowed down when it comes to any of the messages and stuff that you're you're receiving and maybe that energy is not there anymore allow your mind to clear and recenter go ahead and reground and allow you know all of
00:40:35
Speaker
all of your awareness to kind of come back to you. Lastly, I just wanted to talk about a little, I guess, just some things to remember when it comes to scrying. Scrying, as I mentioned, you can use it to connect with the spirit world, to connect with deities. As you're scrying, some people use it specifically to connect with spirits.
00:41:02
Speaker
There's a caution here because an entity can fully manifest itself outside of an object, outside of maybe the method that you're using for scrying. And additionally, some scryers will even initiate a possession type experience to help them with channeling.
00:41:19
Speaker
If you are thinking about diving into scrying as a divinatory practice, please make sure you're doing a lot of research to determine if this is the right thing for you. Like
Safety in Scrying Practices
00:41:28
Speaker
Tiffany had mentioned earlier, we briefly touched on protection. Please make sure you are doing whatever it is that you need to do to protect yourself and protect your energy because while it is
00:41:40
Speaker
intriguing to connect with spirits and to connect with the spirit realm. Understand that the world runs off of energy, including the spirit realm. Do not give away your energy for free and do not engage in a situation where
00:41:54
Speaker
you are not safe and you're not protected. Also, it's important to get into an altered state of awareness while you're scrying. So even if you're not scrying for any sort of spiritual reason or to connect with the spirit or a deity or whatnot, you still have to be in that altered state of awareness. Because if you think about it, like I said, you're trying to connect with whatever method you're using for scrying, and you're going to have to get into this kind of meditative state to do that.
00:42:21
Speaker
The more you practice it, the more easier it will be to find yourself in that altered state of awareness. But if you're having trouble relaxing enough and clearing your mind enough to enter that altered state, you can meditate beforehand before you begin your scrying process. But essentially, the whole
00:42:39
Speaker
process of scrying is kind of like a meditation in and of itself. So I mean, you're kind of meditating twice in this situation. But if that's something that you need to do to kind of get yourself and
00:42:53
Speaker
and your mind ready for that. That's something you're just going to have to do. And then maybe after a couple of sessions, it's easier for you to get into the altered state. And in maybe even being reacquainted with specific smells while you're scrying, the incense, if you use that specific incense specifically for scrying, it might help you as well. So yeah, that is it. That is all on scrying that I have. So much information.
00:43:21
Speaker
a lot of information but you know a lot of good information too. For sure and like Sam said with any of these divinatory practices not just scrying make sure you are doing your research and you know just reiterating to make sure that you are putting those protections in place because
00:43:41
Speaker
You never know. Yup, exactly.
