Scott Game, an unofficial podcast about the MBL1 East competition for 2024. My name's Jacinta and with me as always is Locky France who's fresh off round 10 of MBL1 East. How are you Locky? I'm great, Squint. I, uh, commentated two games that had a combined margin of 70 this weekend. A couple of interesting games, but a very interesting round with some very interesting results. Uh, as we get into the, into the nitty gritty four rounds to go after this week. It's round 10 of four just completed over the weekend after a restful King's birthday long weekend. So ah perhaps a lot of those teams needed that extra rest is snatch some of the wins in round 10. So Lockie, give us the results for the men's competition in round 10. I can certainly do that as we hark all the way back to two Thursdays ago, or it started off with

The Center of Excellence hosting the Canberra Gunners, and it was the Gunners getting the win in the local derby, 99-68. Wachlan Smith off the bench with 20 points for the Gunners. And then they ran it back on the Friday night, this time at Belconnen, the Gunners hosting Center of Excellence, but COE getting the revenge win 85-76 on the back of 24 points and 11 rebounds from Jacob Firthy. More COE action the very next week. As on Saturday afternoon, the Center of Excellence kicked things off against Hornsby Koringa and it was the Hornsby Koringa spiders getting their first win of the season, 81-75. Couple of players out for COE, all five starters in double figures, but Hornsby Koringa too good on the day, getting the win. The Comets took on Illawarra at Comet Stadium and it was a 120-81 win for Comets against an Illawarra side missing

Riley Abercrombie, Matt Fryerson, 26 points for Illawarra, Bewale Bales and Christian Akuso.

Men's Competition In-depth Analysis

24 points a piece, Christian Akusiati a double-double in Obi-Chai's absence, stepping up as a starter. North took on Central Coast at the Bear Cave and got a 110-100 win. Mandrel Worthy leading a host of solidly performing North's bears with 24 points, whilst Robbie Heath had a big 38-4-7 for Central Coast. But North's too good on the day.
00:02:41

Maitland traveled to Bankstown and got a 100 to 87 win. Will Cranston-Lown 22.6 rebounds, nine assists and six steals. Matt Gray also putting up 22 for the Mustangs.

there at the hive. Chris Bryant 27 points, eachsh Sanders 22 as the imports got it done for hills. Bryant Williams continuing the theme as the Sutherland import dropped 22 of his own.
00:04:02
Speaker
Manly traveled out west to Penrith in one of the longer Sydney based road trips. And it was the seagulls getting up 105-65. This Jonas Harper let all scorers with 25 points and Mason Bragg again with a double-double as he is wanting to do 19 points and 10 assists. Do you have a nickname yet for that road trip manly to Penrith? I don't because it's only just a little bit shorter than the Crosstown Clash, which is Penrith to Sutherland. So I need to need another one for maybe a ah Cats versus Birds.

thing for the Panthers and the Seagulls. Might have to work on that for a theme. Central Coast hosted comets and comets again passing the 120-point mark for the second time in the weekend, courtesy of 44 from Buali Bales as they got up 121-90, Robbie Heath again passing 30 with 31 points of his own. Robbie Heath shooting a lot more efficiently lately and getting to the line with regularity as well. COE finished off what is a four game round for them as they crammed the games in before they head off to our national team duty and they got up 104-84 against Newcastle. Kai Savage, 38 points. Kids, Cohen East got game and you're guaranteed to have a good performance. He had 38

shooting 13 of 13 at the line and seven of nine from three point range, whilst Miles Cherry led all scorers for Newcastle with 23 points.

Playoff Spots & Strategy Discussion

Manly finished off their weekend with an 87-65 win over Bankstown. This time Matthew Eldridge chipped in with 20 points and 14 rebounds as Harper also had 20 and Mason Bragg with his second double double of the weekend, 14 and 11 assists. And rounding things out, Maitland, a second win of the weekend, 103 to 86. And it was the boys from the West, Will Cranston-Lown, 27, six, eight, and four steals, and Matt Gray, 20 points and nine rebounds to help Maitland on their way in the face of 24 points and six rebounds from Zeke Evans. So big, big weekend and big, big effects on the latter.

a race in 11 teams for eight spots or 10 teams for seven spots now that Canberra have officially

secured their spot. So congratulations to the Gunners, but I'm sure, I'm sure people can ah sit down and figure out ways that Maitland have already assured themselves of a spot, but I have better things to do. Absolutely, the fact that you've already worked out that at least the Gunners have cemented their place in the finals is already a lot more than I'm sure a lot of people are thinking about, so your extra mile efforts are always appreciated. To the women's results now for round 10, and as Lockie mentioned it did kick off a week ago where the Centre of Excellence hosted the Canberra Nationals
00:07:57

and won 87 to 82. All five starters for the Canberra Nationals getting into double figures for this game, including Lizzie Tonks who had 18 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. The same two teams backed up the next day, this time at Belconnen Basketball Stadium, with the Canberra Nationals losing 72 to 92. Sienna Harvey was outstanding for the Center of Excellence, with 27 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists. Rolling into the weekend that just was, the Center of Excellence hosted the Hornsby Keringi Spiders, losing at home 79-87. In an overtime thriller, Ayana Bay for the Hornsby Keringi Spiders was outstanding with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

And for the Mustangs it was Shakira Riley with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. The Aubrey-Wedonga Bandits hosted the Newcastle Falcons at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre. Whereas for the inner west bulls, it was Maggie Robbins who had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sutherland Sharks made their way to the Hornets' nests and played Hill's Hornets, winning on the road at 70 points to 99. Meg Jefferson stood out for the Hornets with 20 points and 10 rebounds. In a very low scoring affair out at the Panarith Valley Regional Sports Centre, the Panthers hosted the Manly-Waringa Sea Eagles and lost 40 points to 63.
00:10:22
Speaker
Mia Heider was best on show for Panrath with 8 points and 13 rebounds and for Manly it was Alex Delaney with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists. A depleted Central Coast Crusaders hosted the Sydney Comets at home, going down 56-61. For Crusaders, Sarah Matthews had another double-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists. And for the Comets, Davida Dale had 20 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. The Newcastle Falcons stayed on the road and this time they dropped in at the Centre of Excellence, with the COE winning 89-84.
00:11:03
Speaker
Monique Babongi was big again for COE, with 28 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals. And for the Newcastle Falcons, Nicole Munger had 26 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Manly Waringa Sea Eagles were back at home for their second game of the round, and they lost to a very tough Bankstown Bruins, 65 to 67. Zoe Miller came up big for Manly with 22 points, And for Bankstown Bruins, it was Ji Hyung Park. 12 points, 13 rebounds, 12 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks. Absolutely massive game and an important win for the Bruins. In our final match of round 10 in the women's competition, Penrose Panthers stayed at home and faced the Maitland Mustangs, winning 77-72.
00:11:54
Speaker
Talia Tupai had a massive game with 37 points and 5 rebounds and for Maitland Mustangs it was Sydney Hunter back from injury with a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Player Movements & Game Reviews

00:12:06
Speaker
The women's ladder after round 10 in MBL 1 East 2024 Aubrey Wodonga Bandits are still on top of the table with 15 wins and zero losses so I think I mentioned this most episodes well not most episodes but at least for the last couple of episodes Aubrey, Wodonga Bandits women and Northside women in MBL1 North are still both undefeated and are both still, to my knowledge, the two undefeated teams in the entire comp. So that's pretty impressive, 15-0. Second place is the North Spares with 13-1.
00:12:41
Speaker
Third place is the Manly Warringah Seagulls with 10 and 3. Fourth place are the Newcastle Falcons with 11 and 4. Fifth place are the Centre of Excellence with a win-loss record of 10 and 7. Sixth place, Sutherland Sharks swimming their way up into the top six with 7 and 6. Central Coast Crusaders have dropped to 7th position with a win-loss record of 8 and 7. And right behind them are the Sydney Comets in 8th position with 7 and 7. 15 and 0, Lockie. That's a pretty good place to be in after round 10. Five games to go and they've already clinched a top four spot, the Aubrey Wodonga Bandits. Because there aren't four teams left that can finish with
00:13:31
Speaker
15 wins because they've all got at least six losses. And similarly, Norse women, because hills and comets still have to play that makeup game and one of them will drop to eight losses. That puts Norse in the finals because there are only mathematically only eight teams can reach 13 wins now. And that's what Norse have. Congratulations to Aubrey Wodonga for securing a home quarterfinal, and for Norse securing a final spot and a 13-1, you'd have to say they're not far away from securing a top four berth of their own. Yeah, I think you're right. And next round they play the Sydney Comets, but I'm pretty confident that Shyla Hill, who's just returned to MBL One East, will be off again for Opal's duties.
00:14:15
Speaker
Yes, I think Shyla and Lauren Nicholson will both be away, but Lauren Jackson not going to Japan? Correct. ah so As quickly as we had some of these players, they leave us again. But when you had a performance like Lauren Nicholson had this week, and like Shyla heel had this week, you take what you can get. That's right. That's why you have to really value any opportunity you can to see the likes of LJ, Loz Nicholson, Shyla Hill play in your own backyard because it doesn't last forever. It certainly doesn't. This week, we were due to review a game from the men's competition.
00:14:54
Speaker
And we chose to review the Norse Bears versus the Central Coast Crusaders at the Bear Cave, which looks like a pretty close contest on paper. And it interested interested interested us enough to take a closer look. So Lockie, what were your initial thoughts for this game? We mentioned when we were figuring out a game to watch, we were like, we we want to see what's going on with crew. Because looking at their lineup, You know, we wed expect them to be slightly higher on the table. And the one thing I went and scoped out before I i watched this game was
00:15:32
Speaker
cruise defensive numbers and their defensive ratings 107 points given up per 100 possessions, which is 12th in the league. Considering their, you know, they've, there's some, definitely some teams that are well below them on, um you know, wins. There's Penrith and Horns, we've only picked up one win this season. I've got to say that in the first couple of minutes, um I kind of saw why that defensive rating is one is what it is because North's offensive intensity was just better than crew's defensive intensity. If it wasn't for a couple of balls bouncing different ways, an early close game could have been out to an early North's big North's lead. There was just one play where Brennan Reimer just
00:16:15
Speaker
lost his dribble two steps from the basket and the ball bounced out of bounds and that would have been two of the easiest points you could find. A ball bounced off someone's foot and just dribbled out to crew and you know on such small things to gain sometimes go. But um after that first couple of minutes, um they are subbed on Sharnai pretty early. I think that was after about three minutes and it actually suddenly started looking a little bit better for crew, rationed it up, but maybe to a fault because, uh, North's were in the bonus after just five and a half minutes and it was on Evan Wardlow just grabbing, uh, Cooper Wilkes as he rolled to the basket. I don't know what you saw on that play, but I didn't think that he really needed to, to grab him there. And especially in a situation where your team's already got four fouls.
00:17:00
Speaker
Look, yeah, just to go on your earlier point about the defensive rating of the Crusaders and how you saw very clear examples of that in the opening minutes of this game. To me, if you're having to resort to grabbing someone on a pick and roll when you're guarding the roller, ah very clear signs that perhaps you need to go home and work on your defense. There is should be no place, unless it's like some kind of, actually, I don't even think I can think of an excuse as to why you need to resort to grabbing someone. Uh, just kind of deal with that. You beat call the second line to come and help you and rotate. There was also a couple of times when an offensive play didn't go someone's way from the crusaders. So they just jogged back. Get your ass back. I would be so annoyed if that was my teammate that, Oh, I missed the shot. I'm just going to jog back. Um, I've already taken like 400 shots this game. I'm just now going to jog back. No, get your ass back.
00:17:58
Speaker
you know, you have such a low defensive rating. And I know the idea of the, to win the game is to score more points than the other team. But the other half of that is to stop the other team from scoring points. If you stop them from scoring points, then you don't need to score as many points to score more points than them. Um, yeah, so that was just little things like that I thought were pretty disappointing to be fair. Not only were Norse playing the better team ball, they were playing more team ball. Loving watching Mikey Jung at the moment. i'm so absolutely loving watching him. 2.0 or at least one and a half version version one and a half at least he's really playing very well his assist game is really it was already good and it's gone up another level. You see so many players when they had to take on responsibility which he's had to do when Ryan has been out. You can see it in how good their ball movement is from from Norse at times it breaks down sometimes but
00:18:54
Speaker
They're definitely committed to it. Um, it just, it was just good basketball to watch for a lot of the time watching North on offense. I actually wrote, I actually wrote the same thing. I wrote, I also wrote nearly word for word. North just had better team basketball. And I felt like I felt the same way that you said, I felt like they were a lot more committed to their game plan and they had a much clearer direction of what they were trying to do, especially on the offensive end. it's funny you mentioned crew like players just jogging back on um transition defense because they were taking off like stab rats and transition offense especially on misses and they got steals and they got up caught and if they could find Robbie Heath
00:19:38
Speaker
They were absolutely going gung-ho, and it was working for them as well, because Robbie had 12 points after a quarter, got to the line a couple of times on those transition efforts as well. And we've ripped Robbie, maybe not ripped him, but advised him that maybe he could shoot a little bit less. And fair play to him, he did. There were a few times he was dishing it off, especially now he's got Ben Stevens there inside. He's got a really good, he's got a really solid option in there. so Fair play to him. And as I said earlier, he's been shooting more efficiently, but ah they got out, when they got clean rebounds and they got steals, that was when they looked their best. And that kept it close in the opening quarter, which finished 31-25. Nors hit five of six three pointers in the first quarter. I know, like I saw it early. Brendan Reimer hit a couple. I think he finished four or four for the game, but they were just lighting it up and they were the ball movement, got them open threes.
00:20:36
Speaker
and Maybe the crew defenders weren't right up in their face all the time, but that's kind of the risk you have to take when you got someone like Rymer or maybe a mandrel worthy, you can just easily put the ball on the floor. But then on the flip side of that, there were definitely shots where Rima and Worthy had a full hand, a full long arm of the likes of Nye or Wardlow. Oh, they were. Yeah. Oh, they were making very tough ones. Yeah, they were. Although we'll get to it. We'll get to Rima's toughest one later in the game. I know the one you're going to talk about. Yeah. I think everybody who was watching that game knows what I'm going to talk about.
00:21:22
Speaker
So 3125 after a quarter, I noticed, and as someone who has probably said a lot of screens in their time, Nate Musters got called for a couple of moving screens. Do you think he's, he sets a very wide stance on his screens. Do you think that's perhaps making it look like a moving screen when it's not sometimes or is he just resetting a little bit or is it a bit of both? I'll have to go back and have a quick look. um I think general, like a generalization, I think in MB01,
00:22:02
Speaker
And maybe more so in the men's games that I've watched this season, is that when an illegal screen has been called, it's usually because they've set the screen and the guard has even gone too quickly. So the what like the the bigs go on to set the screen, the guard has taken off too quickly, hasn't allowed enough time for the big to actually set their feet. And so they get called for moving or the big goes to set the screen and then they just rush it and then they're actually moving. And that's when when the call. general rule that's most of the illegal screens I've seen called this season.

Game Strategies & Player Impact

00:22:35
Speaker
I'll have to go and double check though. but there there was There was definitely there was definitely one where he was like, really? And I, to be fair, night I felt the same on one of them. So I feel bad, especially for guys like musters who are the classic big like they're tall, they're broad, they will set you a good screen, tick, tick, tick. And then I think sometimes
00:22:59
Speaker
They unfairly get branded with setting an illegal screen just because the guard has come off in an awkward way or they've gotten smashed on the screen and then the poor person setting the screen gets pinged for a foul and it really shouldn't be. The foul should be on the per the the teammate of whoever's guarding the ball for not telling them that the screen's there. Speaking of getting laid out on the screen, Mike Golding on Robbie Heath. or there was certainly an elbow extension on that one. That was ah appropriately officiated. Moving on from the ah the contact sport becoming a collision sport. So there was a period in the second quarter when Heath and Stevens were both off court. And it felt in that period that North just felt, on defense, just felt safe in any matchup.
00:23:57
Speaker
didn't matter who was guarding who, we got this. And there was no one really drawing a lot of attention away. Yeah, it just felt like, it didn't feel like crew were ever going to get much done because Norse were just calm composed. We got this if those two are off court. It's like we are copying each other's notes because I also wrote the note of Stevens and Heath are off at the same time. And I'm pretty sure it was a part of the game where crew were still down and they could have had an opportunity to gain momentum and catch up with a deficit.
00:24:31
Speaker
And I noticed that Crusaders at that time were a little bit directionless, because when either Stevens or Heath are on the floor, you know that's the going to be their scorer. And even if you have no options, if the ball ends up in either of their hands, that they'll make something. But then both of them are off at the same time. We know that the likes of JT and Luke Cassidy are very capable scorers, but it looks like that their role this season, now that they've got these new guys in, is to take a bit more of a backseat. So there was a lot of uncertainty of like, Oh, so what are we running? Who are we running it for? Like, what do you guys want to do now that we have the opportunity to shoot? What do you want to do? Do you want to shoot? Should I shoot? It was very directionless. Cause it felt like you probably say that Cassidy would probably be third scoring option maybe.
00:25:22
Speaker
Me personally, I would prefer that him and JT would be the third scoring option. But the way that the Crusaders men have been playing, I think Nye and Wardlow have been taking it on themselves to be the next scoring option, which I don't agree with. I'm sorry guys, I don't agree with. Definitely in certain situations, but if I'm drawing something up, they're not they're not people that I'm drawing it up for, nine times out of 10. But I mean, in any event, it just means your third and fourth scoring options now just become your primary and secondary. Probably not training a lot for that. But they're shooting like they are. There's been games in the past where Wardlow and Nia, I mean, again, we always preface this by saying we don't know what their role is. We don't know what the coach is telling them to do. We just call it as we see it. But there definitely been games in the past where Wardlow and Nia are playing like their job is to be the three point shooters.
00:26:18
Speaker
And, sure, Nye hit two of six this game and they were at, especially the one in the fourth, was at a crucial time. But I'm not recruiting them to be shooters. I've got Trustom, Cassidy, Bailey, Schwabe. That's the guys that I know that can shoot. Alex Bailey in the freezer getting no court time this season. Why I'm not too sure either. Wardlow and Nye are playing like their shooters. And I mean, to be, to be fair to Wardlow, he is shooting pretty well for, is there actually their leading shooter for the season in terms of percentage? But at 37, coming into the game, coming into the game. So, and then a whole lot of guys hanging around the 31 to 33% mark.
00:27:06
Speaker
But regardless, back to the original point is that Heath and Stephens were both off and it, yeah, it just wasn't the best time for for crew. Conversely, there was a time when Rymer and Worthy were both off for Norse. And Pat Fraser and Jake Weinstein came in and just started flinging the ball around and facilitating like they'd be there the whole time. Props to the North bench for coming on with a lot on for their limited minutes with a lot of confidence. I know that Robbie Moore, you know, he's playing so and significantly less minutes this season than he did last season. But again, he was also someone that had to step up in Brennan Reimer's absence.
00:27:44
Speaker
ah But yeah, coming on, he had six points in 12 minutes, um put six shots up in those 12 minutes too. I think sometimes his decision making or the his excitement probably got the best of his decision making sometimes. um But yeah, it's good that they're at least coming on, playing with confidence, picking up where the starters kind of left off, even if it wasn't absolutely perfect. I thought the bench players for the Crusaders actually did pretty well. Like Tom Akamamoi has really matured his game a lot in the last couple of seasons. He's definitely um playing his role quite well so far in crew.
00:28:22
Speaker
And Jamal Schwabe as well. He comes on, brings a good energy on the defensive end. Two points, two rebounds, 10 minutes, not too bad. But I thought that was good science from crew when the bench fell. As I actually mentioned Jamal Schwabe, I paused him and noticed him. I don't remember exactly what he did. It must have been something good because I actually paused the video, went back and looked at the boss score to make sure I could tell who exactly it was. I was like, oh, that's Jamal Schwabe. Keep an eye on him. Shout out to Jamal and his podcast he started this year, the ProLane podcast about the Youth League competition in New South Wales. So you got to listen to ProLane. So in a couple of years, when you listen to East Got Game, you know all the players, because all the players they talk about on ProLane are the players who are going to be playing in, playing in MBL1. Well I better start, I better catch up on my ProLane episodes then so I need to study up for the future.
00:29:17
Speaker
There was a moment which I thought might have shifted things, but didn't really. And it was, um, when Nate Musters just shoved Robbie Heath over in the paint for the on Sportsman like, and I thought that might, uh, might've started something and it didn't. there was definitely getting some tense moments and I think it was even getting chippy between the coaches because where James and ah of course shout out to James and Garen two feet in the paint also commentate for North's where they where they sit when they commentate those games they are pretty much right near the score bench and between each of the team benches
00:29:52
Speaker
and because where the camera is as well you can sometimes pick up what each coach is saying if they say it loud enough and then you can definitely sometimes see how they're saying it and where they're directing it. So there were times where coach Angus Burke was I think directing a spray at the crusader's end and then it looked like he was getting some back so it was very tense in the bear cave. Yes. You can, you can tell because sometimes the coaches are at this angle. I'm facing you dead on. Sometimes they're at a kind of the 45 and then when they're like this and I'm now facing like 90 degrees to you because no one can see this, then you know they're giving it to the other bench. Yeah. Um, so yeah, it was ah getting a bit chippy and I think, I can't remember if it was an unsportsmanlike foul, but it was a very heavy foul.
00:30:38
Speaker
to the point where I think Robbie Heath got up and was it Robbie Heath that got up and shoved Cooper Wilkes? I think it was no think it was trust him got up and shoved. It was trust him it was yeah and Wilkes that got chippy. Yeah, but none of those moments sparked a run for either team. You think one of these things happened that change it one team is going to either let it get to them or one team is going to use it as energy and it just didn't like that. Unsports and like got the score back to it was 50-38 at the time and at halftime it was 60-47.
00:31:13
Speaker
And look, it gets to that point sometimes. We do admire players who are able to regulate themselves straight away and get on with it. But you do often kind of expect that it fuels something in in a team where they want to attack a little bit more or be a bit more aggressive on defense. But yeah, it all settled pretty quickly. At one moment from the second quarter, which is kind of apropos of nothing, but Lewis Holley safe, laying out like a wide receiver and throwing it back in. That was good. That was very good. Classic. and you know In what was a good game all around for Lewis? Of course it was a good game for Lewis Holley all around. It always is. This game he ended up with 16 points, 11 rebounds. He shot six from nine, ah which included one from two from the three point line.
00:31:58
Speaker
and three from five from the free-through line. And that was all in 27 minutes and 17 seconds. So a pretty, pretty solid game from him. I really like how they do that sneaky back cut from the weak side to the strong side. And they either get an easy reverse layup or they get something from the short corner. Norce had been very good at that. Mikey Jung was very good at finding that and feeding it in the right at the right time. And Jung ended up with eight points, two rebounds, and five assists in just 19 minutes and 35 seconds of play for him. And he also shots three from four. So, shooting percentage for the North Spares was very, very good this game around. Perhaps they are, have been doing their own shooting sessions in their own time. Hey, Coach Angus Burke, they do the extra ball movement training because they have to go off and use that time to get their ball movement. I reckon if there was a stat for second assists,
00:32:51
Speaker
Michael Jung would have had a few of those as well because though there was certainly times where he was kicking it and the next pass was to the corner and then the shot or, you know, just one around and then the shot. So, and there was one where he got into the paint and he caught he caught the entry feed and just dished it straight off to either the musters or Wilks, I think. Actually no, it was to Holley. Just dished it off to Holley. I'm like, how did Michael Jung get in there? How did the pass get into him? And then he was able to find Lewis Holley in close quarters. Good on him. But you know, actually looking back at the stats, we did compliment the Norse Bears earlier for their playing a little bit more team ball than the Crusaders. But having said that, each team had 22 assists for this game. So I think perhaps Norse Bears may be playing a little bit more team ball in the half court and Crusaders true to style looking a lot better in transition. There were lots there are a few times actually, I should say consistently through this game where the Crusaders ran with four guys on transition.
00:33:50
Speaker
which I really, really liked. Gives them lots of options, compliments Luke Cassidy's game of liking to play with a lot of pace. JT likes to play with pace as well when he's not cramping. And I say that with love. I say that with love because it's a running joke and I also cramp terribly. um But yeah, they looked much better. But as you said, they've got to lock down on defense. turn that the turn get some more opportunities to run your game by getting more stops. And I reckon they'd be so much harder to beat, especially now they've added Ben Stevens. Like I was really impressed with him. Me too. And I think that's probably where some of those 22 assists came from. Cause I even wrote it down that earlier in the season, we would have seen Robbie Heath and he still did it a few times. And to be fair, he shot a pretty good clip. So, um, he would have just gone in for this ridiculous floater.
00:34:43
Speaker
Instead, he was getting in, dropping in into Stevens instead, because now he's got a player that just prove has proven himself over the last couple of weeks, that he can be an option in a variety of ways. um but I think the first play of the third quarter or one of their first plays was exactly that dropped in into Stevens and Stevens just gave it to Tristan. Tristan was wide open because the defense just converged on Stevens. Stevens is a really great piece added to this Crusaders team. He's a very good ah textbook power forward. He knows what his game is. He sticks to it. He's very good at it. He's not trying to reinvent the wheel.
00:35:24
Speaker
He's good at his hook, he's good at finishing under the basket under pressure, he's good at distributing. He had 23 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals, shooting at 11 from 19 overall. like ah have and I hate to ask the question, where would the Crusaders be had Ben Stevens been here since the start of the season? have one games earlier in the season just on the back of him being there and they have so much more chemistry with him by now that you never know what the result of this game could have been. You mentioned all the things he does. He catches in the high post and knocked down a couple of jumpers from the elbow as well. He's got range as well. I've only seen his range out to 15 or 16 feet. Maybe you can shoot more. I haven't seen that yet, but great signing. just Yeah, just a pity he hasn't hasn't been able to play until the last few weeks.
00:36:13
Speaker
And Robbie Heath too, certainly making a lot better decisions with his shot selection. Heaps better, heaps better than compared to the other games that I've watched. So he ended the game with 38 points, four rebounds, seven assists and three steals. He shot 11 from 17. Like you said before, usually he would just try and force a floater. And this time he was finding ah players like Stevens to dish to. Still took a couple of floaters this game, but has just perfected his touch. Him and Stevens have a really, really nice touch when they're going for the hooks, going for the floater. Robbie's obviously gone away and worked on that a little bit. um But yeah, he had a very good all around game. I mean, he had three steals, but I still feel like he can be a stronger presence on defense, given how his experience and athleticism. Definitely, definitely.
00:37:09
Speaker
um What did you make of the start of the third quarter for North? Because it was a water i mean there were a few turnovers and they were not There's no such thing as a good turnover, but one was Cassidy picking off a pass that was, I'm not sure how he even saw that it was passed, let alone picked it off. And then just being the ball being poked away. We'll get to mention it now. They had four points in the first four minutes before Brennan Reimer decided to do his Arike of Gumbawale national championship game impression and hit a ridiculous three.

Fourth Quarter & Player Behavior Analysis

00:37:49
Speaker
Oh my gosh, that was massive. That shot needs to make the top 10 plays of the week. And it probably won't because it happened in the East, but that was a huge shot. That was, and it was big for them because crew were on a threw on a charge. Norse just needed points. I think it was a 12-4 run to start the quarter or something at that time. Yeah, crew were on a really great charge to start the third, which is kind of unlike them traditionally this season and previous seasons, a much more positive sign to see. In that third quarter, crew scored 35 points to North 23. 23 still good, just took them a little bit ah to get there. I can't remember too much specifics though from that third quarter, but I do remember the feeling of like, anyone gonna score?
00:38:41
Speaker
How long has this score line been stuck like this? um Yeah, it felt ah like all of the bad bits were happening at one chunk of the game. But when we were talking about you know Heath sometimes dishing to Stevens, I actually really liked Cassidy and Ben Stevens in the pick and roll. Because Cassidy, Luke Cassidy, not scoring as many points as he has in previous seasons, but two points, five rebounds, seven assists, five steals. didn Didn't have the best shooting day, only one from eight. Um, but putting up stats everywhere else and being the only true point guard on the team as well. Actually take that back. Alex Bailey's also a point guard, but hasn't been seeing any minutes this season, unfortunately, but Cass really steering the ship, doing all those other good things leading by example, but in the pick and roll with Ben Stevens just looks so good because Ben Stevens is always in the right position.
00:39:38
Speaker
Cass will get him the ball exactly where he wants it. And I should have gone back to count how many times they either got good looks or scored when it was those two in the pick and roll. Because I feel like they did that like three or four times in a row and had success. It just looked better with Cassidy than, I guess most of the time it's with Cassidy or Robbie and just, yeah, it looked better with Cassidy. Robbie and Ben, I think work better together when Ben already has his position in the paint. It was Cassidy and Stevens work better, as you mentioned, yeah, in the pick and roll. At times when Stevens will catch it on the roll, he'll draw all the defence, dish out to JT in the corner, bang.
00:40:21
Speaker
but wonderfully run offense. um And it did kind of make me think as well that North were getting a little bit confused or miscommunicating as to how they were supposed to be guarding the pick and roll because they didn't really make any adjustments after the third or fourth time stop said pick and roll. um So I don't know what's going on, what was going on there. one one to One to work out for the weeks ahead. Uh, did you have any other real pinnacle notes about gameplay? No, my main note for the remainder of the game was that the first 90 seconds of the fourth quarter looks like it was a one point game. And instead of there being 10 minutes left, both teams played like there was 10 seconds left. It's like, we just got to get a basket. It's like, no, it's just absolutely because it was 83 82 after the third quarter. And it looked like crew were just desperate to get the lead.
00:41:13
Speaker
and Norse were desperate to not give up the lead. And in the end, until Madra Worthy threw down this monster dunk and said, right Art, enough of this silliness, neither team looked remotely close to putting the ball in the basket. It was really funny. I also noticed the remarkable change in intensity in the fourth quarter, where I felt like this was the intensity and the pace I was expecting from the first quarter. And not not saying that any of the game wasn't played at any great pace. It certainly was. But particularly for men's games, I feel like it's very high energy and it's very much sprinting 90% of the first five minutes of the first quarter in a men's game.
00:41:55
Speaker
and ah particularly for Crusaders who really like to run but I felt like both teams came out and they were almost in like third or fourth gear and all of a sudden in the fourth they're like oh it's the last quarter oh my god we better we bet we better win this game we better hurry up yeah it was like it was like the score line changed so quickly that both teams suddenly looked at the scoreboard after the end of the quarter and were like oh it's not a 10-point game anymore Um, the only other things that I picked up on, which was really interesting, uh, North dominated the boards 39 to 28, but both teams had 11 offensive rebounds and converting that into second chance points, given that both teams had 11 offensive rebounds, uh, North's had 15 second chance points.
00:42:43
Speaker
And crew only had seven. And what I thought was really interesting is that North's had 39 points from the bench out of their total of 110. Crew only had 16. So kind of reflective, ah maybe a little bit more reflective of that team style of game that we saw North play a little bit better than Crusaders. Both teams had a quarter where they had over 20 points in the paint. Crew had 24 points in the paint in the third quarter alone. And that's 24 of their 35 points for that quarter too. Like that was remarkable. That was a lot of the Ben Stevens getting in there a lot more pick and roll. I think that's a massive amount of points for one quarter just dominating on the inside crew are just struggling though from the three point line. I think they only had seven from 29. Sorry. I think they shot seven from 24, which was 29% for the entire game from the arc. And.
00:43:43
Speaker
I think that also came down to shot selection a little bit and who was shooting the shots. So Nye shot six of that 24 making two. Tommy Akamamoi shot four. Robbie Heath shot four. Cass shot four. Cass again not having his best shooting game. So again shot selection and who's shooting those shots was a choice. Definitely won the turnover count though, 14 to 22. I feel like a lot of North's turnovers came in little bursts at the start of the third quarter and then the start of the fourth quarter at both teams and then they have Nate Musters two moving screens, Mike Golding a moving screen and
00:44:25
Speaker
And those are just the ones that collected people. Those all count as turnovers as well, those offensive fouls. And I think probably not sure if the unsportsman-like on musters would count as a turnover as well. but that was another moment there. So, but still 22 turnovers against a again ah team that, as we said at the start, really wanted to get out and running anytime they had a light ball turnover. It's definitely something for North to clean up. And we know Angus Burke won't be too happy about his team committing 22 turnovers. No coach would be happy about his team committing 22 turnovers, but we we know Angus Burke pretty well to know that he especially won't be happy about that. And a lot of fouls this game.
00:45:05
Speaker
20 fouls to North, 26 to Crusaders, Crusaders having trust him and Heath fouled off in the end. with Stevens and Cassidy on four fouls each. Everyone managed to stay on the court for North, but Reimer, Musters had four each. Holy and Worthy had three each. And Mandrill Worthy had two of those three very early in the game, unfortunately. But it was great that he was able to stay in the game. Because then he had 24 points, three rebounds, four assists, and a steal in 29 minutes. And he shot eight from 12.
00:45:41
Speaker
did a very good job of keeping it clean on the defensive end. No, I think that's all all the points I was going to make for um the actual game. I do have some fun points that I'd like to make about this game. we

Commentary Highlights & Anecdotes

00:45:54
Speaker
we like fun We like fun points. The fun points I would like to make for this game to conclude the review. It's just observations, but mostly it's quotes from James when he was commentating. James and Garen, I mean, Lockie, you think you and I, well, I think you and particularly Hamish Salberg you are very good at making up nicknames and phrases for to add to your commentary repertoire. We got nothing on James and Garen. Nothing. They are like a
00:46:21
Speaker
continuous roller decks of phrases and nicknames and reference. I don't think I'd ever be able to keep up with it. This one from James though, um he was giving a shout out to a couple of Central Coast venues across the whole game. One he said was Aguana Joe's. So side note, Aguana Joe's was a restaurant located on the Gosford Waterfront. Not there anymore, it's called the Drifter's Wharf or something now. Anyway, shout add out to James though who did mention Iguana Joe's and reference an incident that happened with a couple of politicians there years ago, where he said, you just go up to the front and say, do you know who I am? ah So that was a very nice deep cut political reference there, James. I'm very impressed with that one. If anyone doesn't know that one, you can just Google it. ah He also said, don't sleep on the east.
00:47:15
Speaker
During the call, thank you very much, James, for the shout out for the Eastcott Game slogan. He did also shout out Eastcott Game at one stage and mention me by Squin or Squibb, which is okay, but it's Squin and Garen got a bit confused, but that's okay um because I don't introduce myself by my nickname on the podcast. so but That's fair enough. ah One part of the game, James said, Holy with the Casey Quigley on a reverse layup. So I'm guessing that Casey Quigley had a similar move in either the game before or a different game, which I thought was quite funny. my My fun moment was I'm pretty sure I saw Robbie Heath giving the two small celebration after one basket.
00:47:59
Speaker
He did. I think he posted up Mike Yung and made a basket and everyone's like, yeah, and he was just like too small. I think there was another shot that he made, I think. I really did like the whole stumbling, the fake stumble celebration. Yeah, that was pretty funny. It was really unexpected. He's always looks like a guy that doesn't show a lot of emotion when he plays. So when he did that, I thought it was pretty funny. I really hope the Crusaders are able to capitalize now on having Ben Stevens. I really hope that the GM's first agenda is making sure we get Ben Stevens back next season. Please, for the love of God, get Ben Stevens back one way or another next season. He is just the piece that the Crusaders need. He is the one piece that we need that we've been looking for in the last few years to replace Callum Jenkins. He is the second coming of Jesus.
00:48:52
Speaker
Well, there is a deep cut reference. Yes. Uh, for those that don't know, Callum Jenkins used to be referred to as Jesus. Aesthetic with the long hair and the beard, but also because he, uh, got the winning tip in to win the championship against Manly. And we say that was the hand of God. The crusader, the crusader's savior. The crusaders, he's the savior. He was also called the savior. Actually, I think that was more his nickname as that Hamish gaming was the savior. So he's near his initials are CJ, but he's more like JC. That's right. That's correct. And so Ben Stevens is the second coming of the Savior, I think. Savior Steven. So please, someone at Crusaders, please re-sign Ben Stevens. Yeah, I really hope that they're able to string a couple of wins together by the end of the season to give themselves the best possible chance to make finals. But I

Upcoming Matches & Playoff Implications

00:49:44
Speaker
don't think that is likely.
00:49:46
Speaker
No, and they have ah not the easiest run home. They've definitely got winnable games, but I think they've got Inner West and Manly still to play, so they probably have to win both of those at least to have a chance. it Yeah, 3-12, they'd need a lot to go their way from here. But yeah, any final thoughts on that game, Locky? I think we've just about covered everything and more. Excellent. That's very, very good. All right. Next segment in our regular eScott game programming is news and gossip. Now I've got a couple of small pieces of news. Would you like me to go first in case yours is more prolific than mine? Oh, my only piece of news is that the Hills comments game that was rained out has been moved to the evening of Wednesday, the 26th. Fingers crossed I'll be on the call.
00:50:42
Speaker
So yes, correct, it has been rescheduled as Lucky said. It will be at Alexandria as previously planned and the games will be held at 6pm and 8pm, women's and men's respectively. Get around it, what else are you going to be watching on Wednesday night? 40! And that actually is State of Origin Night, the 26th of June. But why would you watch State of Origin when you can watch NBA One East? The other piece of news that someone has kindly supplied us is that Piaf Gabriel from the Inner West Bulls women's team was cut. She was asked to leave and was sent home. Did not expect that. Not two thirds of the way through the season. Only other piece of news I have is that the Empire One have a new website. It looks pretty good though to be honest. I really like most of the layout. um It's a lot more easier to navigate between the different conferences at the top of the screen. And then a lot easier to navigate between
00:51:38
Speaker
ah The homepage, news, fixtures, the ladder, the stats, the clubs, the players, because that's now all at the top. I didn't really like it on the side. When you go to a team page, it is a lot easier now to navigate things like ah news, players, fixtures, stats. And the thing that I like is that they have probably make it a lot easier to find the information about the stadium, like the home home ground for the team, because me living up here, have I've certainly gone to a couple of incorrect menus because sometimes it was listed as something really random like the Brisbane basketball court. And like that could be anywhere. Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down? Exactly. So I like that they've added the tab of the stadium and it linked to Google maps as well. So that's very helpful.
00:52:30
Speaker
And you can click, you can actually click on the club name from the ladder and it will take you to the team page. yeah which I also like, I also like that observation. So i'm I'm liking the layout, the tabs and the organization with all the headings at the top. And like you said, clicking to the team from the ladder makes it much easier. The only thing that I'm having trouble with is when I was preparing for a game on the weekend, I wanted to see the average points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game for a team. And I found that really difficult to find.
00:53:04
Speaker
Oh, you can get the players, but not the team stats very well. Yeah, I did. I was able to find the team stats once and then I forgot how I did it and was unable to replicate it. So that made it it a bit tricky. Yeah, it'd be nice to just have a ah team stats page. um Because even when you go to the stats tab, you know, all the players come up and stuff like that. But I found it really hard to find the team stats. ah But you brought up another point as well that might need a little bit of modification. Yeah, you can filter between men's and women's on every page except the fixtures. So i when I was reading out the men's results earlier, or actually trying to get all the links to the Bob score so I can give a few players, I had to actually yeah make sure I wasn't selecting all the women's games. They are labeled, but it would just be nice to be able to see just the men's or just the women's if you just want to, you know,
00:53:59
Speaker
have a look at one and not the other. Yeah, I agree. I found that, I find that really hard as well. And given that, uh, across the NBL one this weekend, there were, I think 107 games or something across the country. When you've got competitions that are having Friday, Saturday, Sunday games in one round, you really need, for nerds like us, we need a filter between men and women at least. So I, hopefully that little tweet can be added. Uh, other than that. That's all the news and gossip I've got. One, one thing I just thought of, it's not MBL one East related, but it's near enough. Good enough. Um, Wartar league finals, August 24th and 25th at Hills. Okay. That's good. That's good. Hills is fast becoming the home of finals. Yeah. Well, they've got the, uh, I've got the facility for it. They still, they still haven't got back to Shoalhaven after Shoalhaven was promised finals at NU venue and then COVID intervened. Oh yeah.
00:54:58
Speaker
We need to get down to Shoalhaven for finals one year. Yeah, that would be really nice, actually. It's a nice part of the world to be. Sorry, I do have one last piece of news and gossip. ah The FIBA Women's Under 18 Asia Cup is due to be held in China from the 24th to the 30th of June. And yes, from the day of recording, that is only six days away. Meaning the likes of Opal Bird, Monique Pobongi, um Tiana Bond, Jade Crook, Bonnie Dees, Sienna Harvey and Amelia Daikic and Zara Russell and Monique Williams who are currently part of the COE squad will be unavailable.
00:55:42
Speaker
So the COE is just like bailing. Yeah. ah And hopefully some people who have been out injured are going to be ready to go because that's a big chunk of their team that's going to have to be overseas. I'm not too sure what's going to happen there. So all those kids that they called up throughout the season might be getting another callback. That is going to be interesting to see what happens in those games over those two couple of weeks. Um, all right, so that's news and gossip and now it's time for Jersey of the Week. I think you've picked an absolute stellar Jersey this week, Lockie. Thanks, Squin. What I have this week is one of seven WMBL jerseys I bought in whichever season this was, two or three ago. It is of a player who scored 44 points this week. She is also an Opal.
00:56:35
Speaker
She is a WMBL champion. She is my favourite basketball player on the face of the planet. She is a Sutherland Sharks legend. She is the queen of the Sharkies. It is my Lauren Nicholson, number one Townsville Fire Jersey. Very, very good. And number one is a very fitting number for her to wear. It definitely is. So yes, I bought seven jerseys. I bought a lot of the indigenous round jerseys in one season as well. So I i feel you. I feel you. I had to stop. Last segment for the episode is our beloved All-Star five. Lockie, you had the men's competition for round 10. What did it look like? Well, I have never been closer to wanting to give an All-Star six because, and the only reason
00:57:21
Speaker
Davo Hickey isn't in this with his 21, 9, 8 and 7 is cause A, I had to get up big in and B, other players just had double headers and did it twice or three times or played four games. So Davo, no one has ever been closer off without being in. But we'll start with, we'll start with the longest one first and it's Savage by Name, Savage by Nature, Kai Savage. who started slowly with just 6 points and 5 rebounds against Canberra. Lifted to 15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal in the win over Canberra. Bit better again with 17.7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in the Lost of Hornsby Keringai. But then 38 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, shooting at an excellent clip to get COA a vital win, 104-84.
00:58:19
Speaker
over Newcastle. And then a raft of bigs put their hand up but again I had to go with someone who had a few games and then brought it when it mattered most, Glen Morrison. So he had 13.7 rebounds in the win over COE. then 11 points and eight rebounds and an assist in the loss to COE, but then when it mattered most, 97-96 win over Inner West came up with 28 points, 15 rebounds and six assists. When you need someone, you know, when you need someone to shine a light and guide the way, the Brindabella beacon is there for you. Beacon by name, beacon by nature. That's right.
00:59:02
Speaker
And then a man we've mentioned a lot on this episode, but the way he has improved his shooting efficiency of late and his decision making and not taking it all upon himself, I had to get Robbie Heath in here, despite the two losses. 38 points, four rebounds, seven assists, three steals and a block in the loss to Norris. And then ah another 31.6 rebounds, two assists and two steals in the loss to Comets. But at the start of the season, he was putting up those numbers and his shot numbers were almost the same as his points.
00:59:36
Speaker
This time he's doing like 38 on 17 shots and getting to the line and 31 on 16 shots. so And then Will Cranston-Lown made the most of his ah double header. 22.6 rebounds, 9 assists, 6 deals and a block in the 100 to 87 win over Bankstown. And then 27.6 rebounds, 8 assists, 4 steals in the 103 86 win over Penrith. And finally, the one and only had an absolute weekend to remember for Wylie Bales, fresh off playing for the Indigenous Basketball All-Stars against Sacramento State, which he played alongside David O'Hickey, the two comments boys representing. He had 24.6 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and a block in the 120 to 81 win over Illawarran. Boy, was it fun to watch him go against Matthew Fryerson all night.
01:00:30
Speaker
It might have been a 40-point blowout, but those two were the price of admission alone, which for me was free. And then he followed that up with 44 points, nine rebounds, five assists, two steals in the 121-90 win over Central Coast. So if you watch that Comet Central Coast game, you got to see Buali Bails put up 44 and Robbie Heath put up 31. That's a decent way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Yeah, absolutely. And between 107 games that was on throughout the country, there's got to be some upsides like the 44 point performance, right? 44 point games in the men's and the women's this week in East. Yes, they were. And now for the women's All-Star five from round 10. And just like you, Lockie, I had a tough time getting it down just to five. Got it to seven and felt really bad having to cut two from that list.
01:01:26
Speaker
But like you also, I wanted to add a bit of extra context when it came to picking my five. So we're going to start this with a 16-year-old who nearly had a quadruple double against the Center of Excellence in overtime. And that was Jessie Mae Hall from the Hornsby Keringi Spiders. She had 27 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists and 7 steals, which for a 16-year-old at a semi-professional level is just outrageous. Then we went with Ji Hyung Park from the Bankstown Bruins who had a big two wins I think over the weekend against Maitland. Ji Hyung had 20 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and in a massive win against Manly she had 12 points, 13 rebounds, 12 assists and three steals.
01:02:20
Speaker
Then a regular of the All-Star Five for 2024 is Lauren Jackson, who had 35 points and 19 rebounds versus the Falcons. Then Shyla Hill had a double header for the Sydney Comets and also had a massive weekend. Against the Illawarra Hawks she had 32 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals and shot at 53% overall. Then against the Central Coast Crusaders she had 27 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals.
01:02:54
Speaker
And topping it off was the NBL1 East Player of the Week, Loz Nicholson, who is well and truly back home. So welcome back Loz, but now she's gone to Japan again for Opal's duties. But while she was here, she had 44 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals versus Hills, and shot an absolutely outrageous clip of 81% from the field overall. All right, well, because we gave you an athlete interview on the week off last week, this week we thought we'd take a rest and we wanted to try and focus on the game review instead. But next week we will do our best to get another athlete interview on. If there's an athlete in NBL 1 East that you would like to be featured before the season closes,
01:03:40
Speaker
Uh, let us know in our DMS on Instagram at East Got Game, and we will try our best to get your favorite athlete on as a guest. Even if it's yourself, honestly, there is absolutely no shame in nominating yourself if you'd like to be

a guest. I think we'd both, I think we'd take that as a compliment, to be honest. All right. Looking ahead to round 11 of 14, Lockie, what games from the women's competition stand out to you? Well, it's the ah rematch of the Avian Afray, Manly versus Newcastle. It's looking to be a ding-dong battle because ah Manly not having the best of weekends. Neither team really having the best of weekends. See, this is where I need my filter. Canberra versus Maitland might be a sneaky good matchup. I think both teams will want to have done better this season than they have. I think they'll both be
01:04:35

coming really coming out for that one. I think that will that will be, it could be a tasty matchup that maybe might fly under the radar. Yeah, I think, and for the men's competition, obviously, Canberra Gunners versus Maitland Mustangs at Belconnen Stadium, team two versus team one, definitely high on the list of games to look out for. And I think I also said this previously, ah but Norse bears men versus the Comets men. Uh, I think I picked that as probably one to watch earlier in the season, but I think given again, where they each are on the ladder, how their seasons have been tracking, it's going to be a very important win to get for both of those sides. Oh, a hundred percent. Anytime you can get a win and dish it at like a close rival on the ladder or loss. That's why in in soccer, they call them a six pointer. Uh, cause yeah, North are eighth and Comet's a ninth.
