In this episode, I'm going to be talking about how you need to build up your skills in order to actually find your voice, find your own style, find something that you like to make. You see, oftentimes a lot of us know what we kind of what we actually want to make already. We all have these ideas in our head and we all just kind of want to start doing that already.
00:01:10
Speaker
But you see here is where a lot of people make the mistake is they'll try it, they'll try whatever they're thinking. And then if it doesn't come out how they want it, then they just kind of stop, they just stop experimenting, they stop trying to get better with their pottery. And the big problem with this is, is that if you're not building, putting in the reps and building your skill set up,
00:01:35
Speaker
how are you ever going to reach your own style, reach something that you like to make, find your own voice. If you aren't putting in those reps to build up your skills, we need to be able to put in the reps.

Persistence and Repetition in Mastering Pottery

00:01:53
Speaker
So we build our skills further, build our skills so that we become more confident, more competent. And being able to find our voice is wholeheartedly
00:02:05
Speaker
in line with trying to build our reps. You see, I had a really great conversation with Naomi Peterson and she said one of her professors was saying that a lot of people know what they kind of want to make already. They know the ideas that they want to make. It's just that their skill set isn't to where it is, what they think they should be making, what they want to be making. And it's kind of like a
00:02:35
Speaker
Let's think of it kind of like an elevator. One's going up, one's going down. And the one that's going up is that's your ideas. Your ideas are the ones that are going up.
00:02:46
Speaker
And then the one that's going down, actually I should probably reverse it. The one that's going up is your skillset. The one that is going down is your ideas. And the more you work on your skillset, the more you are going to build up enough competence and confidence into yourself so that when that elevator of your ideas starts coming down, you meet right in the middle.
00:03:15
Speaker
And in that middle, you guys are even right there. And eventually, your skill set passes your ideas and you can start coming up with new ideas and it just kind of resets.

Turning Ideas into Reality with Skills

00:03:24
Speaker
So you have to build up your skill set first in order to start developing your voice, developing further, finding your style, finding what you like to make. Because if you don't have the skill sets necessary, then you're not going to be able to actually make what you're thinking of.
00:03:41
Speaker
So you have to build your skill sets, put in the repetition. In the wise words of Tony Robbins, repetition, repetition is the mother of skill. Try to imitate his voice a little bit, but I couldn't get it. Repetition is the mother of skill and that's so true with pottery. You have to put in those reps and you have to fail. You have to put in everything or else you're never going to be able to find your voice. Thanks for listening to this episode of Shaping Your Pottery with Nick Torres.
