Teaser about the New Supergirl Movie

00:00:42
Speaker
Hello everybody and welcome back to Adventures in Collecting Real Talk. ah That's right, we are back with another edition of Real Talk. This time we are going to be talking all about the new Supergirl movie. ah Really excited to give you my thoughts, my opinions on it.
00:01:00
Speaker
um But as is always the case, before we hop into this edition of Real Talk, let's cover off on a little bit of housekeeping. So first and foremost, where will AIC be this week? We have our first in-person event of the summer coming up this week. So if you are listening to this episode or watching us as it is new on ah Monday, July I got that right. Um,
00:01:31
Speaker
Later on this week, we will be at the Toy Insider Sweet Suite, one of our favorite events every year.

Toy Insider Sweet Suite Event Announcement

00:01:38
Speaker
We are super, super excited to go. They have some new things planned this year.
00:01:43
Speaker
um Some surprises even. So i definitely keep an eye on our Instagram feed and keep an eye on your podcast feed because the next episode should be something that we recorded ah potentially at a podcast booth.
00:02:00
Speaker
at the event. So that's really cool. ah We're always excited to see our friends from the Toy Insider, our our peers, before they head off to San Diego Comic Con and give us all of the FOMO in the world. ah Yeah, so just keep an eye on ah on the feed as that is something that ah that will be coming up. And it is July, so we have a brand new giveaway.

Marvel Legends Mephisto Figure Giveaway

00:02:25
Speaker
um So the giveaway for July, it is hot outside. and it is hot in here. We are giving away a Marvel Legends Mephisto.
00:02:39
Speaker
So we have partnered with our friends Machu and J-Shot of Between Two Sentinels to give away this awesome Marvel Legends Mephisto. It's a great figure. I opened mine. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but I promise you it does not disappoint.
00:02:54
Speaker
So i it has been kind of popping up back on Hasbro Pulse, probably some either canceled orders or, um you know, some additional stock that came in once these actually did hit.
00:03:06
Speaker
But like the other made-to-order items, there's no guarantee that this will come back in stock or stay in stock long. So this is your opportunity to win yourself a Mephisto. So i head on over to at AIC underscore podcast where you will find our pinned post with all of the instructions you need to follow in order to win um potentially win this Marvel Legends Mephisto figure. So you have the entire month.
00:03:32
Speaker
The month is young. So ah you have the entire month to enter to win Mephisto. It's going to be a hot summer, and he is going to be the hottest figure on your shelf.
00:03:46
Speaker
So, yeah. So once again, you have the entire month at AIC underscore podcast. Make sure you follow all the instructions, read all the rules and enter yourself to win Mephisto figure. So ah really looking forward to giving that one away. We've got some other really great giveaways lined up for the rest of the year as well um and probably more to come. So Yeah, ah that about covers off for

Deep Dive into the New Supergirl Movie

00:04:13
Speaker
housekeeping.
00:04:13
Speaker
So this is our second edition of ah Real Talk. So Real, R-E-E-L. Just as a reminder for those that might have missed the first one, which was Toy Story 5, this is an opportunity for Dave or I or both of us to come on and talk about a movie that has recently come out or that we've recently watched. So it could be something that's old it could be something that is still in theaters uh it's just movie talk and uh that's something that Dave and I absolutely love we started this show with our bond kind of over toys and our love about talking about toys but uh we also love to talk about movies so with that being said uh this past weekend I did have the opportunity to head to the theaters to see the latest uh DC movie which is
00:05:06
Speaker
Supergirl. So um first of all, ah this is the kind of second project from second film project from James Gunn and the rebooted ah DC Universe.
00:05:21
Speaker
So we were introduced to Millie Alcock's Supergirl in the Superman film that came out a couple of years ago alongside David Cornswett. So this is the second time we are seeing her in her in her ah debut role in the DC universe. So ah this movie is still in theaters as of right now. So it is, as I'm recording this, it is Independence Day. It is ju it is July 4th. This movie is very much so still in theaters. And ah yeah, let's let's let's dive in. So um the movie.
00:06:00
Speaker
So Supergirl takes takes place drops us right into the story where super girl is on an absolute bender, um, to put it lightly. Uh, she is visiting planets with red suns.
00:06:17
Speaker
That way she can, uh, she can get drunk. She can enjoy, drowning her, uh, her, her problems away. um she is a hot mess.
00:06:28
Speaker
Uh, this movie is based off of the very, very excellent, uh, comic book woman of tomorrow. If you have not read it, I cannot recommend it it enough. It is, it is a fantastic read. um but that's what this movie is based off of. So it follows. We've we've kind of got two two stories here. Follows Kara's story as she is dealing with being one of two remaining ah species of planet Krypton.
00:07:01
Speaker
um She is off with her her dog Krypto celebrating her birthday. And by celebrating, i mean, like I said, full full on fullon destructive dendr.
00:07:12
Speaker
um one of the planets that she, uh, that she lands on, uh, is home to Ruthie and her parents, um, who are, uh, weapon makers. They're, they're, they're blacksmiths, but they're, they're legendary. The, the Knowles, um, Elias and, uh, Delilah Knowles, uh, uh, Krem of the yellow Hills, our films villain shows up with, uh, with his cadre, his gang to, uh, collect weapons from, from the gnolls. And by collect, I, I mean, steal them. Um, things go haywire.
00:07:50
Speaker
They slaughter her entire family and leave Ruthie, uh, alone so ruthie in her story she is on a revenge quest she has her family's sword it is the last weapon that she has um kind of a family heirloom and she is a kid uh she is traveling to the dive bars of the planet looking for somebody to help her offering the sword as payment if they can take her um to Krim.
00:08:22
Speaker
And that's where she initially first crossed paths, first, cross crosses paths with Supergirl. So ah Supergirl, in your kind of very typical scoundrel fashion, is not interested in helping.
00:08:38
Speaker
She is very all about herself, very imperfect, very trying to figure out what her life is. She is not worried um about what's going on with this little girl. But of course, um that heroic pull starts to come into effect.
00:08:54
Speaker
ah She gets the the little girl, Ruthie gets bullied around this bar and one thing leads to another. And next thing, you know, Supergirl is already defending her honor. Now this is, again, she is on a planet with a red sun. She does not have access to her full powers. She's getting beaten up. um She's still strong, but she doesn't have the ability to recover or anything like that. So, you know, it's, it's basically,
00:09:21
Speaker
a level playing field with, uh, with some of the other, uh, gangsters and and aliens and creatures and stuff that she's, she's immediately put up against. Um, again, not to spoil the entire plot, but as these tropes tend to exist in movies, uh, Ruthie and Kara end up seemingly,
00:09:44
Speaker
yeah like they can't avoid each other. They keep bumping into each other as they kind of make their way across the planet and realize that, you know, their, their paths crossing is kind of inevitable.
00:09:55
Speaker
Once Krem steals Kara's ship, Supergirl ship and poisons crypto, giving crypto 72 hours to live. The only antidote for Crypto exists on Krem, keeps it on his person.
00:10:12
Speaker
It is a something that his species does as a as a um interrogation i method where they poison somebody, kind of dangle the fact that they have the antidote over them, and um it's something that's like a traditional ah tactic.
00:10:31
Speaker
The other layer to this is that Krem is part of a larger...
00:10:38
Speaker
child trafficking ah scheme, which is super gross and really evil. um They are trafficking specifically young women.
00:10:49
Speaker
um His race is entirely um male, so they... um They go and they traffic women, young girls, i in order to continue their all-male race.
00:11:07
Speaker
Do with that what you will. So, i Kara being a Kryptonian young girl, and this girl Ruthie being a ah you know ah warrior, makes them really strong candidates for Krem's other um efforts, we'll put it that way. so they've then very quickly realized that they've got 72 hours to both save crypto and, you know, potentially along alongside get revenge for Ruthie's family.
00:11:39
Speaker
So... That's our story. That's where we kind of set out. As we go through the story, we get that kind of James Gunn approach to storytelling. Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of needle drops. There are needle drops or musically throughout this entire movie. it if If you thought there were a lot of needle drops in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies,
00:12:03
Speaker
holds Hold my beer. there There are seemingly um needle drops everywhere in this. I... For me, it doesn't pull me out personally. I don' i don't i don't hate that that form of of storytelling in films. I find it fun, especially if I like the music, of which I enjoyed the music throughout this movie.
00:12:26
Speaker
um I don't think it works as well as it does in Guardians of the Galaxy, only because... music in guardians of the galaxy is something that is so important to peter quill's story you know the the mixtape and you know the the tape from his mom and the the the walkman and then eventually the zune um it's something that's worked into the story here it is just purely stylistic songs being used and they're from genre different genres different eras um again it it feels very james gunn it was actually something that i was kind of surprised
00:13:05
Speaker
there wasn't more of in Superman. Um, but, but he, he certainly makes up for it in this movie. Um, so yeah, so there's, there's music everywhere and I don't think it's diegetic.
00:13:20
Speaker
Um, that being like music that the characters are also hearing it, is it is purely needle drops for the, for the audience. Um, And it works like it I never felt like it took me out of a scene or it felt awkward or anything like that. But um again, it just feels like, hey, this worked in the Guardians of the Galaxy series and this is kind of another space romp.
00:13:43
Speaker
um Why don't we why don't we do that same thing here? You know, a formula worked. Let's use it again. um That being said, this is totally very different from Superman. ah Superman, while it also felt like a James Gunn project, it had that kind of anachronistic humor. It it had the the type of writing and pacing that we're used to seeing in a James Gunn film.
00:14:08
Speaker
um All of that was still here. ah The heart, the dialogue, the humor, the you know slight crassness. um the anachronistic humor, um all of that was present here. But this felt more ah more akin to the the Guardians of the Galaxy films, is I think is especially part two, um crossed with like Mad Max Fury Road.
00:14:34
Speaker
And now a word from our sponsors.

That's

Speaker
And tell them that Adventures in Collecting sent you.
00:15:23
Speaker
And now, back to the show. Characters like ah but like Lobo, we'll we'll get to in a minute, um like what they did with Krem, kind of the griminess of some of the planets, the the dirtiness, the the way that kind of everybody is scheming all of these different groups of gangsters and criminals and underbellies and red light districts and, you know, human trafficking. There there there was there was a thick...
00:15:51
Speaker
Thick film of grime on on this movie ah that was not present in Metropolis. Right. Like, you know, when we're when we're in the world of Metropolis, everything is polished and clean.
00:16:05
Speaker
ah Even like the the the world between worlds, you know, when when we were when we were jumping. um was very geometric. It was still kind of dirty, but like, even when we got into the, the, the part where like Lex had set up all of his, you know, prison cells and had set up his, his, um his monkey trolls, right? Like all of that was clean and organized and, and, um and rhythmic here. It is, it is very off centered, off kiltered the whole time, which I think visually mirrors, you
00:16:42
Speaker
what Kara is going through, right? Like Clark has kind of figured it out. Superman has figured it out. He, he knows his place. He's comfortable with it. You know, he, he likes wearing his suit.
00:16:54
Speaker
He, he has his relationships figured out. He has his career figured out. He knows, he knows what he's supposed to do from a heroic standpoint and he's embraced that. um And David Corn sweat,
00:17:07
Speaker
embodies that as well like his his version of superman and we we get to see him several times in this in this movie um in a couple of different ways so there's some flashbacks to when kara first arrives on earth and then um he's actually like trying to facetime her not just to wish her a happy birthday but like to say like hey come back home like let me help you figure this out like you don't have to be alone we're not alone we're together um And she's just not, for the majority of the movie, she's not ready to hear that. And when we see him in the ah in the flashbacks, he's kind of playing this like big big brother role. And like when she first lands on Earth, she can't speak English. um
00:17:49
Speaker
She only speaks Kryptonian, and he's never learned Kryptonian. The only Kryptonian he knows is in his parents' message to him. So you know there's this awkward...
00:17:59
Speaker
you know, kind of getting to know you moment where he knows that he's going to be responsible for her and, you know, that he's there to help her. And, you know, he wants to see her succeed and wants to see her, um, embrace this opportunity to be something really special on earth.
00:18:15
Speaker
And, um, she's clearly not ready to embrace that yet. And it's it's taken her time. And even even the majority of the movie, I mean, you you see it in in the poster, right? She's got the the brown trench coat on. That's basically her costume for the the majority of the movie is that that brown trench coat.
00:18:33
Speaker
um And not even with the super suit under it, just with plain clothes. um she She has the suit. The suit is is on her ship. um We even see a very touching moment where we see when when Clark gives her the suit and says to her, you know, effectively, like, it's so that way they know you're a good guy sort of thing.
00:18:57
Speaker
And... and and there's a lot to that right that's that there's a lot there's a lot of pressure that's a lot on her shoulders um and again like she's trying to figure out if at this moment if the if this is if this is the the the path she wants to pursue we see um you know flat through flashbacks we see the the challenge of being born and and raised on the, the the like, the astroidal,
00:19:28
Speaker
um like, chunk of Krypton that that survived, and everyone around her is dying of of kryptonite poisoning. and um You know, her her parents basically say, like, we figured out where Kal-El went. we can send We're going to send you there. There's no future for you here. We don't want to watch you die.
00:19:46
Speaker
And even at that moment, like, she doesn't have a choice. And that's something that I think is thematic about this movie is... um these characters that are in these heroic roles often don't get to choose um whether or not they want to be in them.
00:20:04
Speaker
Right. and And that's not something that's, that's uncommon or something that's unique to the DC universe or these particular super, you know, meta humans. Right. You know, it goes back to the Spider-Man trope, you know, with great power comes great responsibility. It's, it's something that these superheroes are, know, kind of destined to do whether they want to do it or not. And, you know, she is again, and she's grappling with that. Like, i want to wear this suit. I don't want to help this girl.
00:20:36
Speaker
i don't want everyone. um Everyone has been making decisions for me my entire life. You know, I, My parents decided to send me to Earth. Clark, you know, gave me this suit.
00:20:49
Speaker
Now I'm being asked to be a hero. I'm just trying to go out and celebrate my birthday and somebody has poisoned my dog. I now am with this little girl that's trying to get revenge for her family. And it's it's all of it is forcing her to maybe do something that she's not ready to do. But as the movie progresses, she realizes that, you know, that's, that is her story and her decision ultimately spoilers, um you know, to embrace the role of being super girl is, is like a heroic or a truly heroic moment. She realizes that it's not just self-serving.
00:21:28
Speaker
um She has to be,
00:21:35
Speaker
her own version of Supergirl. And we see things that like, she does things that Clark and Superman would not do, probably would not approve of. um you know, specifically in the the final moments of of her battle with Krem and everything. um And again, I'm not going to not gonna spoil that part of it, but like, you know, she does push the envelope.
00:21:57
Speaker
But at the same time, she realizes she has an opportunity to do right by by Ruthie, by this this young girl, to make sure that she doesn't have to live through the pain and the suffering that she's kind of setting herself up for.
00:22:12
Speaker
So she does make the bigger decision. She does do right by the people around her. And she does you know kind of embrace the role of being Supergirl. And and it's what's really great is She's messy.
00:22:25
Speaker
She's very real. This feels more real in a lot of ways than a lot of other superhero movies do. And and again, I know it's filled with tropes. There's so many different versions of a story where the hero doesn't. You have the reluctant hero that is dragged into battle time and time and time and time again and given the opportunity to make the right decision and and continually does And I mean, that's that's part of storytelling, right? Like the the familiar is is always helpful to guide audiences through this, um stories like this, especially new audiences.
00:23:00
Speaker
um so So that part of it isn't unique, but just the fact that like seeing that S and and knowing that it is a Kryptonian character and our... our are kind of compass when it comes to Kryptonians, especially, you know, with, with it, with it being, you know, Superman and Clark is that they are boy Scouts, right? Like they, they have their moral compass is permanently locked to North and and is always going to do the right thing. So to see her kind of having these struggles and, and, and going to places where she can literally damage herself, um,
00:23:38
Speaker
willingly is, is kind of a unique take, um, for, for the character, especially for, for this particular character, right? Like in the previous iterations of the DC universe, most recently, you know, Zack Snyder took a darker turn with Superman. And, and for me personally, like that just didn't work.
00:23:58
Speaker
You know, Superman is supposed to be that ray of hope and he is throughout this and he is that guiding light, which is just fantastic. Um, So to see her struggling and a little bit messy and ah and a little, little less guided, um, I think made for a very entertaining story and a very like fulfilling ending. Like you, you really feel like you went on a journey with this character.
00:24:25
Speaker
Um, and, and she is just fantastic. Millie Alcock was great. Um, from a, a, a writing standpoint, um,
00:24:37
Speaker
You know, I i know ah James Gunn is a producer on this, so, you know, it's it's not a James Gunn film, but his his fingerprints are all over it. ah Craig Gillespie i was the director of this.
00:24:51
Speaker
um Your writers are are Anna Nogueira, Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster. Yeah. I am getting a little bit numb to this like anachronistic style of of of humor in

Jason Momoa as Lobo in the DC Universe

00:25:05
Speaker
these movies. I really wish they would just dial it back just a little bit.
00:25:09
Speaker
um I think it really works for some characters. And I think it's like way over the top for others. um But speaking of characters that are are excellent and and have been perfect, even on Lobo.
00:25:22
Speaker
So Jason Momoa back in the DC universe, not as Aquaman, but as Lobo, the character that seemingly was was made for this man. um I know it's it's like fan casting. People wanted him to be Lobo for years and it's finally happening.
00:25:40
Speaker
And it is it is perfect. He steals every single scene that he is in um down to his his use of the word Bastitch. I mean, like the cigar.
00:25:55
Speaker
The God complex, it is, it is all there. um He is fantastic. He is, he is absolutely fantastic. They, they did right by a very, very cool character in the DC universe.
00:26:10
Speaker
um The way that they handled him in this, he is, he is just anarchy and chaos. And i honestly like it. No notes, no notes. I, I,
00:26:22
Speaker
I loved everything that came out of his mouth. loved the way that he looked, um the way that he he moved, the way that he acted, the way that he responded with other characters. It was it was fabulous. It was absolutely fabulous.
00:26:34
Speaker
um I think they gave just the right amount of exposition when you're introduced to him, where if you have no idea who this character is, you are immediately aware of, one, how um unique he is, how dangerous he can be,
00:26:49
Speaker
And how absolutely off the wall insane he is. um They handle all of that in the span of like two and a half minutes and it is perfect. And then he is just kind of sprinkled in the rest of the film. So I'm absolutely fabulous.
00:27:04
Speaker
Cannot wait to see him and more things. um Again, you know back to Millie Alcock, I think she was a is a fantastic Supergirl. I'm excited to see her do more now that you know that this this kind of coming-to-terms movie and setup movie has completed. Now that like we have solidified who Supergirl is in in this universe, what her role is going to be,
00:27:28
Speaker
um really really excited to see what they do with her next i think her and corn and sweat together are going to be very a very interesting duo um just because they they do have a little bit of of differences between them and i i think that's that's really really um important um talking about the villain so um matthias schoenartz plays crem the yellow hills uh
00:27:55
Speaker
DC has a villain

Villain Krem and DC's Character Development

00:27:58
Speaker
problem. I guess guess you could say, um if you ask me my, my personal opinion, their villain roster is kind of weak.
00:28:06
Speaker
So if you're not looking at Batman's rogues gallery or like the big, like a list heavy hitters, um, they have a lot of work to do with their, their villains. Um, I think this was really, really interesting. They made Krem, who was kind of otherwise a forgettable character into somebody that was visually impressive. Um, he was gross, uh, and, and, and like a real, he felt like a real villain.
00:28:34
Speaker
Um, But at the end of the day, he still, it still seemed like he was small potatoes. Like, had he not, had he not poisoned her dog, um
00:28:47
Speaker
basically, had we not had the plot of John Wick here, this villain wouldn't be worth, ah you know, a Kryptonian's time. Like, totally, to be totally honest. Yeah.
00:29:02
Speaker
But this does go to show you that the you know the way that in kind of James Gunn's creative sphere, right, he's he's pretty good. he's He's proven that he's pretty good at taking characters that people, um even people who are who are fans of of existing comic books and things, taking characters that are a little bit on the the deeper cut side and bringing them into ah you know the the the larger pop cultural sphere. I mean, if if you had told me I don't know, even five years before the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie came out, that like Star-Lord would launch you know Chris Pratt's career and that you know the character would become a household name. The same with Gamora and Drax, the Destroyer. like Characters that, sure, they had like a cult fan following, but now they're like...
00:29:53
Speaker
elevated to a list uh marvel characters simply because of the treatment that they got in that film so that is really really great for i think for the dc universe because there are so many opportunities with villains that you know uh maybe ah how or like a flash in the pan sort of thing um And they could really use that kind of reinvention and and elevation.
00:30:18
Speaker
ah You know, there there are always going to be those A-list big bads. you know, your're you're... um You know, your, your brainiacs and your Lex Luthers and your jokers and penguins and Mr. Freezes, right? Like all, all of those characters, but like seeing him work with a character like.
00:30:38
Speaker
Clayface, you know, in this upcoming movie and, and, you know, maybe even doing something with like a character like gorilla grot, like i I can see him taking these characters that. have paper or have personality on paper, but have yet to really been kind of like explored and exposed in a way that a lot of the other, you know, um, really like Batman villains have been.
00:30:59
Speaker
So I'm excited. I am excited for that. And I think Krem is a good example of what that might look like in the future. Um, overall, you know, it worked, I think it worked for this movie, this type of movie, this type of story, um,
00:31:18
Speaker
We won't be seeing him again. Spoiler. But, um, yeah, good it it it worked. It worked. And the and the the real life kind of tied to, like, the human trafficking and and grossness of that really added an extra layer to,
00:31:33
Speaker
um kind of how how villainous he was for the, for

Review and Highlights of the Supergirl Movie

00:31:38
Speaker
the lack of a better term. So with all that being said, what did I think of the movie personally?
00:31:44
Speaker
Um, I enjoyed it. So I definitely recommend going to see it, whether you are a fan of, um, the DC movies thus far or not.

um This is unique. I think if you are a Marvel fan, I think you will cling to this pretty quickly ah in terms of its pacing, its storytelling type. um It will feel very familiar to you ah regardless of your, your knowledge base of these characters.
00:32:12
Speaker
um If you liked the, the David Cornswet Superman film, um I think this feels very much so a partner to that movie.
00:32:22
Speaker
As different as it is, the parts that we see that are in Metropolis, they it put us right back in there, right back in that that that um that aesthetic. So i i I think this works, you know, as our kind of like first spinoff and, you know, broadening of the DC universe.
00:32:41
Speaker
um i I do recommend it. ah Now, if you if you hated ah the first Superman movie, That's also a good thing, I think, for you for this, because, again, tonally, this is very different. While it is complementary to the first Superman film, like I said, it feels much more manic. It's like a Mad Max movie.
00:33:05
Speaker
It's it's it's a it's a romp. This is this is ah an an outer space galactic romp as opposed to you know something that's happening kind of in a city. um so i would definitely give this a chance uh i'm hoping that as they kind of sink their teeth into this and start to churn through some more of these characters i think getting over the batman hump is going to be really important for them um in the dc universe really curious to see what this the green lanterns show on hbo max is going to add um to this world there's there's a lot of opportunity ah the same way that there is with Marvel and and there was with Marvel when when they kind of relaunched.

Post-Snyderverse DC Universe Changes

00:33:44
Speaker
I think coming off of what Zack Snyder built with with the Snyderverse, which was, you know, i've I've said it before. There are parts of it that I absolutely loved. i thought Ben Affleck was a great Batman.
00:33:57
Speaker
I thought Henry Cavill looked the part for Superman, but i've I still, said to this to this moment, he was he was done dirty. That was not... ah It was just too dark to be Superman. I mean, i if I want dark and gritty, I'll watch a Batman movie.
00:34:15
Speaker
You know? um So this feels very on brand for the Superman brand. I think people need to kind of readjust to that, again, coming out of the Snyderverse. So I hope people continue to give these movies a chance.
00:34:30
Speaker
I think James Gunn has has proven that he can he can build onto Superman things and kind of build larger universes and tell longer stories. um So yeah, so my overall recommendation is go see Supergirl. ah it's it's a It's a unique story ah with a great performance from Millie Alcock as as the lead. And like I said, Jason Momoa,
00:34:53
Speaker
Amazing. I could see him getting his own Lobo movie, um an adventure of the week Lobo show. I don't know why I keep pitching an adventure of the week show on all of these, but like an adventure of the week Lobo bounty hunter show would genuinely be fabulous.
00:35:11
Speaker
um And I could see them doing that on HBO Max, making it a little more adult centric, adding a little more violence, I think. Yeah. Give us give us more Lobo. He's great. But um but with that, that is my review of of Supergirl 2026 truth, justice, whatever.
00:35:31
Speaker
