In this week’s Aging Parent Playbook, I introduce Pillar 3: Health Optimization, how to clearly understand what your parent actually needs so you can stop guessing and start planning. We move beyond diagnoses and look at the full picture: physical health, mobility, cognition, emotional well-being, and daily function. I share simple questions and observations you can use right away to assess safety, prepare for medical visits, and make thoughtful decisions about care options without jumping to worst-case scenarios. This is about clarity, not crisis—and creating a plan that truly fits your parent’s needs.

Today, we're moving into pillar three, the health optimization plan, how to figure out what your parent actually needs so you can stop guessing and start planning. Look, a lot of children tell me, I don't even know how bad it is.

Speaker
I feel like things are getting worse and I can't tell if it's normal aging or something else. I don't know if we're overacting or in denial. You can't make good decisions about housing, about caregivers and money if you don't have a clear picture of your parents' physical health, their cognitive and emotional health.

and the practical support they need.

Evaluating Independence and Support Needs

Speaker
When I say health, I'm not just talking about diagnoses. I'm looking at physical health, their mobility, falls, chronic conditions, pain, sleep, appetite, their cognitive health, memory, confusion, attention, judgment, emotional health, function.

Speaker
In my course, we use structured checklists and self-assessments, but I wanna give you a few anchor questions you can start with. Ask yourself, what can my parents still do independently?
00:01:24
Speaker
What do they need What is becoming unsafe for them to do a alone? This shifts your mindset from are they okay or not okay to where exactly do they need support?
00:01:35

Once you start to see the picture, the next big panic is, do they have to go to a nursing home?

Exploring Care Options

00:01:43
Speaker
Look, not necessarily. Think of it as a spectrum you can have staying at home with modifications like so home safety changes, grab bars, removing throw rugs, maybe someone coming in to help with meals, meds, or bathing.
00:01:59
Speaker
Then there's assisted living for people who can't live completely independently but don't need twenty four seven nursing care. This often includes meals, housekeeping, activities, and some.
00:02:12
Speaker
Then we have the nursing home skilled nursing. And this is for people with significant medical needs, complex care, or advanced cognitive issues who need round the clock. When you understand your parents' actual needs, you can match them more wisely to the least restrictive safest environment instead of jumping straight to worst

Preparing for Healthcare Visits

case. Another huge piece of this pillar is learning how to navigate the net medical system without losing your mind.
00:02:41
Speaker
That means preparing for appointments with a short list of concerns, bringing a concise summary of medications and major diagnoses, asking clear questions like what's the goal of this medication?
00:02:54
Speaker
What side effects should we be watching for? What would tell us this plan is. And look, you're not being difficult by asking questions. You're being care partner.
00:03:06
Speaker
And if your parent is still able to speak for themselves, your job is not to take over the visit, but to ask them, mom, do you want me to come with you? Is there anything you want me to take, make sure we tell a physician to?
