Introduction to Ellen Yin and Cubicle to CEO
00:00:01
Speaker
Hey, podcasters. It's Sunny with Zencaster. Today, I'd like to introduce you to Ellen Yin. She's a podcaster just like you. She is also the founder of Cubicle to CEO, a mentorship-focused media company helping women entrepreneurs increase their income. This mentorship comes through their podcast, digital programs, live events, and online community of 50,000 people.
Partnerships and Growth Initiatives
00:00:28
Speaker
Cupicle to CEO is working with Zencaster to raise more awareness for their podcast and free masterclass. Take a listen to my interview with Ellen to learn more about her and to see if this ad opportunity is a good fit for your audience. Hey, Ellen, why don't you tell us a little bit about your background, who you are professionally, and how you ended up where you are today.
00:00:56
Speaker
Sure. Well, hey everyone. My name is Ellen Yin and my company, Cubicle to CEO, that name actually is inspired by my own journey, quitting my corporate cubicle at the age of 23 without a backup plan. And when I made that leap, I didn't necessarily think that I was going to become an entrepreneur.
00:01:16
Speaker
or start my own business, but as life would have it, I kind of fell into this accidentally because while I was searching for a new position in marketing and I thought I was just going to pursue another marketing role at a different company, I actually reconnected with a colleague of mine at the company I had left and him and his wife were local business owners and they had these local coffee stands that didn't have much of an online presence and he had heard that
00:01:46
Speaker
I knew a thing or two about Instagram marketing. So he asked if I'd be willing to help them launch their Instagram platform. And of course that sounded like a really fun project. I wasn't doing anything at the time other than applying for jobs. So I thought, Hey, why not? Let's do it. And that ended up being my first $300 freelance project. And I think it really opened my eyes to this possibility that I could monetize my marketing skills and knowledge and actually
00:02:12
Speaker
create income for myself by selling my marketing services to other small businesses and other brands. And so that's kind of what launched my journey into entrepreneurship and then ultimately it really describes that cubicle to CEO journey that our brand is named off of.
00:02:28
Speaker
I love that. This is essentially the story of your journey. You discovered this on your own and then you looked at it and you're like, wow, other people could probably benefit from this. Is that kind of the timeline here? Yeah, absolutely. When I first launched my business, like I said, it was kind of like a slow
00:02:49
Speaker
evolution into this. It wasn't like I planned to leave my job to start a business.
Ellen's Entrepreneurial Journey
00:02:54
Speaker
And so with that first freelance client, I quickly added a second client in late March of that year, March 2018. And then over the next 12 months, I actually scaled up my services to my first six figures, you know, at one point with 10 different clients. And it was a lot because at the time I was still a solopreneur and had just started getting some contracted help with, you know, like a virtual assistant and whatnot.
00:03:19
Speaker
Then in 2019, that's when I actually dove into the online education space because people had seen my own journey as a service provider and how I had scaled my service-based business, my marketing agency to six figures fairly quickly and they were curious about how I was getting clients.
00:03:40
Speaker
how I was charging the rates that I was, you know, what were my strategies. And so I realized that there was this opportunity for me to serve other service providers, coaches, and freelancers who work one-on-one with clients and be able to share with them the system. I call it my consistent clients cashflow system, the system I had developed, you know, landing these clients myself. And so that's actually what really started our brand as it is today, cubicle to CEO.
00:04:05
Speaker
It became the name of my mentorship program that we still have to this day.
Cubicle to CEO's Expansion and Mission
00:04:11
Speaker
And that is really actually our flagship program, Cubicle to CEO. It's a 12-month group coaching program where, again, we help freelancers, service providers, and coaches specifically make their first $10,000 revenue month.
00:04:23
Speaker
And our key differentiator is that we help people do this without meeting a large audience or posting every day to sell their service. And as that program grew and we started adding more online courses, you know, Cubicle the CEO really started to evolve more into a media company and
00:04:41
Speaker
That's really where we are today. We are a media company elevating the financial footprint of women entrepreneurs through our podcast, our digital programs, live events and community. We've had over 10,000 students come through our programs and our primary mission is to make mentorship more accessible to the masses so that all women can pursue what's possible. Now, is everything focused on women or could other people benefit from being part of what you have to offer?
00:05:12
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, I think our media business is definitely for all women entrepreneurs, all business models, industries, revenue sizes, different stages in their entrepreneurship journey. I think with our programs, we can get more specific because each of our programs has a very specific
00:05:27
Speaker
tangible outcome, right, that we are promoting as a transformation if you enroll in that program. So it gets a little bit more specific depending on what product you're looking at. But for our podcast, we aim to serve all women entrepreneurs everywhere. And I will say, of course, we have amazing men who come through our programs and who are part of our community as well. And we are so grateful for them as well. It's just that our marketing public facing tends to be more tailored towards women.
Podcast Launch and Community Impact
00:05:57
Speaker
Okay. You mentioned your podcast, so let's talk a little bit more about that. When did you launch your show and how does it fit into your business? We launched our show in July 2019. We're coming up on our three-year birthday, which is exciting. This show, it was really a passion project, I would say, to begin with because I really
00:06:19
Speaker
I've always loved storytelling. My original major in college was broadcast journalism, and so I felt like there was a great opportunity for us to create a platform where we could highlight voices that are traditionally underrepresented in the media, especially in the business space. So female founders, women-owned businesses, women CEOs, and especially women of color. And so that was important to us from the get-go, and we're so
00:06:45
Speaker
grateful for all of the incredible guests who have come on our show over the years. We're almost to 150 episodes. We've posted every single Monday for three years. It's been quite a labor of love. I would say these days the podcast is our primary media channel and it's really
00:07:05
Speaker
how we are driving forward our mission to make mentorship more accessible to the masses. Because I think there's definitely hurdles to accessibility in terms of not just mentorship, but education overall, depending on where you come from, where you grew up, the networks that you are connected to from maybe your childhood, maybe where you went to school, if you went to higher education.
00:07:31
Speaker
And to me, I think mentorship is so invaluable. I think that it has the ability to truly change your life in terms of showing you what is possible for you. And I think that being able to have conversations with the top entrepreneurs in the space and be able to provide people that direct insight that they normally wouldn't be able to get in a room, perhaps with this person and
00:07:56
Speaker
you know, get their wisdom and advice, person to person, we're kind of able to bring that to them on a mass scale. I know you typically interview other entrepreneurs for your podcast. Do you also do solo episodes?
Financial Transparency and Educational Offerings
00:08:09
Speaker
And what does that look like?
00:08:11
Speaker
Yes, I do. I do have solo episodes. My most popular solo series is our quarterly income reports. This is a practice I actually started in early 2019 as written reports and then they eventually became
00:08:26
Speaker
quarterly reports that we publish on the podcast and essentially every 90 days I come on and I share exactly what our company makes, spends, and profits. It's part of my advocacy for financial transparency. I think it's so important, especially as women, for us to feel comfortable talking about money, talking about things that have traditionally been taboo subjects and really sharing that financial information because I think the more that we
00:08:52
Speaker
have transparency, the more that we're able to talk about numbers and data in a very transparent way, the more we all win. And so that is our most popular solo series. But to your point, Sunny, the majority of our content is interview based. And I would say what makes our
00:09:10
Speaker
podcast different from most other business podcasts out there is that like we try to avoid asking our guests questions that someone could just Google about them, right? So we're not asking things like, Oh, tell us how you started your business or, you know, Oh, you're an expert in this. Let me ask you some questions or advice about, you know, your general area of expertise. Instead, we really focus each interview on one specific case study. So our promise to our listeners is that if they tune in each week, they are going to be able to
00:09:40
Speaker
borrow one specific revenue growth strategy from a successful entrepreneur who has already tested and implemented this strategy in their own business so that they can just borrow what is already working and skip the expensive and time consuming trial and error learning curve.
00:09:59
Speaker
You are also offering a masterclass for free. So let's talk about that, what's involved, and the benefit of being part of that class. Sure. So my masterclass is a free resource for any service providers, coaches, or freelancers who sell a one-to-one service and want to be able to scale their service-based business to their first $10,000 revenue month.
00:10:27
Speaker
And so it's a free 60 minute training. It's on demand evergreen. You don't have to wait for a live training. You don't have to wait for anything. As soon as you opt in, you're able to immediately watch the training. And essentially in that training, I go over the three most common mistakes that prevent people from actually being able to reach their first 10K month.
00:10:46
Speaker
as well as an overview of my consistent client's cashflow system, which is that methodology that I referenced earlier that I utilized myself to scale organically my service-based business to multiple six figures. And we've been able to help dozens of other service providers do the same. And so that is the masterclass. And then it comes with a free bonus workbook. It's our 10K month workbook.
00:11:12
Speaker
where you're able to fill that workbook out in tandem as you're watching the masterclass. And it really just helps you better remember the key takeaways and included in that is our what I call money math, which are three simple math equations that actually show you exactly how to reverse engineer your own path to a 10K month.
00:11:33
Speaker
And is there any special message that you have for the podcasters out there that you might be working with that might be talking about your podcast and about your master class? Is there anything you'd like to say to
Encouragement and Call to Action
00:11:45
Speaker
Yeah, well, first off, we're just so grateful that you would share our message with your listeners. And it's a great fit if you are also very passionate about increasing access to mentorship for people and creating high quality content that supports business growth. And so for us, like our primary success metric, I guess, for this campaign,
00:12:08
Speaker
is we would love to bring in more podcast subscribers. So however you decide to script your ad, I think the primary thing we want to make sure is included is just driving people to listen to our podcasts. And I think the specific link that we provide to you guys is one that takes them to a page where we've curated a playlist of all of our past income report episodes, just because we know that those
00:12:33
Speaker
are a great introduction to our podcast and people really love listening to them. And the 10K month masterclass and workbook are also linked on that page. So if you can kind of just center the conversation around positioning these as a great resource for your listeners to improve their businesses, to grow their income, then I think that would be a great fit. Wonderful. Thanks, Ellen. Thank you so much.
