Exploring New Ideas with Schrodinger's Cat

00:00:32
Speaker
What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about why you should be doing new ideas that pop in your head because you don't know how it's going to turn out. You see, a while ago, I was watching an anime. I don't remember which anime it was, but I was watching an anime and basically there was a scene where it was like a scientist, basically, and
00:01:00
Speaker
It was a girl scientist in a lab coat, you know, and she was explaining a situation called Schrodinger's cat. And basically, for those of you that don't know what Schrodinger's cat is, it's basically about quantum mechanics. But the way she explains it is you she gives the example if let's say you put a cat in a box, close the box, and you fill it with gas. Is the cat dead or alive?
00:01:27
Speaker
You know, that is the question, right? We don't know if the cat is dead or alive or whatever, because it's in a box and we can't see it. And you don't know if the cat is going to be dead or alive until you actually open the box, right? Until you actually open that box, you don't know what it's going to do.

From Ideas to Action in Pottery

00:01:50
Speaker
It's going to be dead, it's going to be alive. And it's the same thing with pottery and our ideas.
00:01:57
Speaker
You see, when we are able to actually make our ideas come to life, that's when our voice is really gonna start show up. But we don't know what those ideas are gonna look like until we actually do them. You know, if you have a new idea, you're having all of these kinds of ideas with your pottery, go do them. Go do them because you don't know what's gonna actually look like on your pottery with your current skill levels or whatever.
00:02:25
Speaker
You don't know what it's gonna look like until you actually do it and you actually get good at it, right? Because if you just keep on sitting there and thinking about it, then what's gonna happen is it's just gonna stay in your mind. It's never gonna actually come to life. So you have to actually put action into your ideas with your pottery. And I know that there are tons and tons and tons of ideas out there that you get sometimes. And sometimes you don't have the right resources
00:02:55
Speaker
in order to really make this vision come to life. That's fine.

Adapting Artistic Process

00:02:59
Speaker
What what ways can you do to make this vision come to life right now with the resource that you currently have, right? I'll give you an example. So for a really long time, I wanted to make this thing called a breakpot, which I made in high school, which is where I basically make a vase and then you break it when it's bisque fired, and then you paint it and then you put it back together. I wanted to make this
00:03:23
Speaker
Breakpot, but I wanted to make it like a comic book type deal. I wanted to make my own. I wanted to paint my own comic book stuff, but the only problem was my skill sets and my resources were very limited. I am terrible at painting. I'm not very good at painting and I didn't have any underglies or anything like that.
00:03:45
Speaker
So I started doing something different, something different that would still make my idea kind of come to life, which was creating my own characters and my own story for my characters. And that was I simply started, instead of painting and doing the break plot, I started sculpting my characters. And doing that has allowed me to really put my idea to life and make it start really coming to life because I started taking that action, right?
00:04:12
Speaker
You don't know what it's gonna look like until you do that action. You have to do that action. Otherwise, you will never know what

Acting on Pottery Ideas

00:04:19
Speaker
it will look like. It will just stay in your head. It will stay in that filing cabinet in your head and you'll never know. So if you have an idea right now, whatever it is with your pottery, go do it. Go find a way that you can try to do it and try to make it come to life because you never know what's gonna happen. Remember, Schrodinger's cat
00:04:37
Speaker
Is the cat dead or is the cat alive? You don't know until you open the box. And I hope this brought you some value and go open that box. Go do those ideas that you have in your head. This is how you will find your voice.
