We are back!  Benita and Nancy explain why they've been away and tell you what's coming up in future podcasts.

Transcript

Benita Alexander: Hello and welcome to Benita and the Baracas. I'm Benita Alexander.

Nancy: And I am that writer guy Nancy Kumba also known as my Kumba.

Benita Alexander: We have been absent for quite a while, almost more than two years, I think, at this point.

Nancy: and

Benita Alexander: And a lot of you have written and asked why we aren't doing the podcast anymore, have asked us to continue doing it, which we are very, humbled by and grateful for, and we really appreciate your support.

Nancy: back

Benita Alexander: um There are some good reasons we've been away for so long. um I was busy last year taping with Netflix for the documentary Bad Surgeon, which a lot of you have probably seen if you're watching this.

Benita Alexander: And Nancy was dealing, my dear Nancy here was dealing with something really difficult and personal, which I'll let you talk about, Nance.

Nancy: Yeah, I'm truly a ride or die and I didn't want to die. But I went through breast cancer and am a survivor. It's in remission and doing great.

Nancy: But, you know, I had to grow my hair back.

Benita Alexander: yay it looks amazing though remember when you you thought it wouldn't come back it looks incredible and let me tell you this girl i can say that i was gonna say this bitch is a badass but she is a warrior she yeah she fought like hell you really did you fought so hard honey

Nancy: I'm like, I'm not ready yet. Got to grow some hair. Thank you. Yeah. In process.

Nancy: Yeah. Yeah.

Nancy: Hey, you could say, bitch, we're not PG -13.

Nancy: yeah Well, with the support of you and so many others by my side, that's what helped me fight. you know So you you wish you showed up, you were my ride or die ah many times.

Benita Alexander: Yeah, but you have that's whatre that's what friends are for, right? and you've

Nancy: That's what friends are for. Yeah, for sure. But we're we're black.

Benita Alexander: Yeah. So anyway, now we're we're ready to come back. And what's happened now is a lot of you are reaching out, not just about love con, love scam stories, but also bad doctors and like medical horror stories.

Nancy: Yes.

Benita Alexander: So we are going to be talking about all of it. you know weather

Nancy: Oh yeah, I got the chair.

Benita Alexander: And the the themes and are, the threads are the same.

Nancy: but

Benita Alexander: you know Whether you've been conned by a guy, a woman, a doctor, it's about having your trust betrayed, basically, um is what it comes down to.

Nancy: Yeah.

Benita Alexander: And how you cope with that, how you recover from that, what you can learn from it, you know what to look out for, all of those things, um we get pretty,

Benita Alexander: emotional on this show pretty deep and we are all about empowering women and supporting women.

Nancy: Yeah,

Benita Alexander: So, um, exactly.

Nancy: yeah and it's interesting. comparing the medical stuff. You just said something that really kind of tripped tripped me as far as you put your trust in the medical profession.

Nancy: And you know they're telling you this is what you need, bam, bam, bam. And so many stories always tell otherwise. And you know.

Benita Alexander: Well, that's exactly it. You're supposed to be able to trust your doctor maybe more so than you're supposed to be able to trust the person you love, right? Everybody thinks they can trust their doctor.

Nancy: Exactly.

Benita Alexander: um And those stories are really important to tell because there are bad doctors out there and there are there are doctors that in and much the same way that somebody who loves you, a con artist comes in and cons you, who betray your trust and take advantage of your vulnerability is what it comes down to.

Nancy: Yeah.

Nancy: Yeah.

Nancy: Well, and big pharma in the U .S. is no, you know, everybody is familiar with that.

Benita Alexander: Oh, yeah.

Nancy: So, you know, doctors are getting paid left and right in so many other areas, and pharmaceuticals.

Benita Alexander: Yeah.

Nancy: So, um yeah.

Benita Alexander: And it's hard to, it's hard to go up against them. So yeah, we want to talk about all of that.

Nancy: Oh, yeah.

Benita Alexander: So if you have a story that you would like to share, if you're interested in being on the podcast, please reach out. You can reach me via my website, which I'll put up on the screen now, um, bonita alexander .com or on Instagram, bonita alexander underscore official, just send me a message there, but it's pretty easy through the website and.

Benita Alexander: We will be starting up very soon. We're excited and we're excited to tell your stories and, uh, we look forward to being back.

Nancy: Yeah we want to hear from you you know and don't

Benita Alexander: Yeah.

Nancy: Don't think you don't have a story.

Benita Alexander: Yeah, that's absolutely right.

Nancy: You know what I mean? so you know Just share you know something that happened because you'd be surprised how many people can benefit from that.

Benita Alexander: Yeah.

Benita Alexander: Exactly.

Nancy: so Yeah.

Benita Alexander: By you sharing. Yeah. And we don't have to use real names, so you don't have to worry about any of that kind of stuff. If you look at some of the other stories we told about other women, first if you look back at the podcast we've done, the first couple are sort of rehashing my story, which I'm sure anyone who's here knows at this point.

Benita Alexander: But now it's about telling other women's stories and just helping to empower women by ah sharing stories.

Nancy: yeah

Benita Alexander: And it's it's giving women knowledge, really. It's education, right?

Nancy: Yeah And support, you know and knowing that you're not alone You know, I think that that's really key and critical too and I have some topic ideas I'll be throwing out to Benita as well.

Benita Alexander: Yeah, exactly, exactly.

Nancy: So, you know, we're gonna rock and roll. We're gonna have some fun with this one Yes

Benita Alexander: We are, and we do have fun. and This is all about the the word, which I cannot say of my own show, Baraka.

Nancy: I can't, you know, Benita and the Baracas, you know, we gotta, I, you know, I'm still, I'm Puerto Rican and I still struggle, but, um, Baracas, yeah.

Benita Alexander: you Yeah, I can't roll my Rs like that. my It just doesn't, the But the word basically means a badass, right?

Benita Alexander: It's a, it's a strong, resilient woman who's been through something but still standing strong. And you, you, the roots are Colombian, right?

Nancy: Yep, yeah, it's from a, the yeah, it's a slang word, um, you know, but, um, has It had a lot of meaning for us, you know, because we we as women and her, Benita and I have known each other for so long, you know, we know we're badass women, but, um you know, it's just, it's a matter about supporting each other and lift it lifting each other up, you know, I'm tired i'm tired of women ah tearing down other women.

Benita Alexander: Yes.

Benita Alexander: Yes. Exactly.

Benita Alexander: Tearing each other apart. Yeah.

Nancy: Yeah, and and throughout your story, Benita, it really bothered me some of the negative comments that people would make sometimes and you know some of the trolls that were on your your site.

Nancy: Because it's just nasty. And I think it's time out for that. In lieu of what's going on in the world and everything else, it's time to spread love.

Benita Alexander: It is.

Nancy: And you know I think that's what we're all about. And I'm looking forward to ah being able to come back and have some great guests on our show.

Benita Alexander: Yeah, me too.

Nancy: Yeah, looking forward to it.

Benita Alexander: Me too, honey. So we will be back soon. If you're here, don't forget to hit the subscribe button on the channel. And we look forward to hearing your stories and talking to you soon.

Nancy: yeah

Nancy: Yay. Gonna have some fun.

Benita Alexander: me Thanks, Dan.

Nancy: Bye, everybody.
