The Role of Confidence in Pottery
00:00:14
Speaker
up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And in this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about how to gain confidence with your pottery.
00:00:24
Speaker
because confidence is one of those things that you really need to help you with finding your own style and finding your own voice.
Nick's Personal Journey to Confidence
00:00:32
Speaker
The first thing that you should be doing when you are kind of trying to to gain confidence is practicing your skills. When I was first starting out on my own, I was making a lot of mugs and I didn't really have confidence in my mugs yet because
00:00:51
Speaker
I didn't have the skills yet to actually make my vision come to life with my mugs. So I had to work at making my skills better, making my mugs look better by simply putting in the work and repetition and putting in that work so that my mugs look better. I did the same thing when I was trying to learn how to make bigger vases because after mugs, I wanted to learn how to make bigger vases.
00:01:21
Speaker
So that's what I did. I had to put in the work. I had to put in those reps and build up my skill set so that I am because I was able to be able to make my vases look a lot better and be a lot taller than what I wanted to be.
The Power of Practice in Pottery
00:01:38
Speaker
And that brings me to my first point. The first thing that you must be doing is practice your skills. You see, if you're not practicing your skills and you're not your skills don't match your vision, then you're not going to ever have confidence in your skills.
00:01:52
Speaker
You see, there's a quote by Tony Robin that I love and it says, he who practices in silence gets rewarded in public. And that is so true. If you are practicing in silent and you are just practicing by yourself and you're trying to get better with your pottery, trying to find a better way to make pottery, make your pottery look better, then your confidence is gonna go a lot, shoot up a lot faster because
00:02:19
Speaker
are putting in those reps to purposefully get better.
Connecting with Your Pottery
00:02:23
Speaker
So now the second thing that you should be doing to gain confidence with your pottery is you must make a connection with your pottery. Pottery is all about a connection from our the clay to our hands to our hands to our body and then once we're finished with the piece
00:02:42
Speaker
our pots to the customer, to our pots to our family, whoever is holding our pottery. It's all about a connection. You must make a connection with the pottery that you are making so that you know for certain that this is what I want to make and that I love what I'm making because I put my heart and soul into it and I made a connection with it. You have to make a connection with your pottery in order to start gaining more confidence.
Selling Pottery to Build Confidence
00:03:11
Speaker
On that note, after you have made a connection with your pottery, the third thing that you have to do is to go out and just try to sell your pottery.
00:03:22
Speaker
If you don't yet have confidence in your pottery yet after those, building your skills and making a connection with it, the easiest thing that you can do is go out and sell it. Whether you are going to a farmer's market and you're just selling it for just a little bit of money, then that's gonna give you more confidence because you know this is what people like now. You know that what you are making is what people connect with.
00:03:49
Speaker
They know that you have put your skills to use in making what you like to make. That is simply the easiest way is to just sell one thing, one pottery, one piece of pot, pottery that you like to make. You don't have to go and sell a hundred all at once. Just know that if you sell one pot, then you're going to get more confidence just by simply selling that pot.
Parallels in Podcasting and Pottery
00:04:18
Speaker
I'll tell you a story. When I was telling when I was first starting this podcast, I was very nervous. I didn't know what I was doing. I had, especially during my first interview, I had no idea what I was doing compared to now. My my skills have evolved a lot further. But my first episode, it was. I think it was it wasn't as good, definitely not as good.
00:04:42
Speaker
but and there's a lot of things going around me like my dogs were barking all at once when I started doing my first episode and I didn't know if he was recording on I was super scared I was nervous and everything and but because I started doing it more after I got that first one done it everything else became a lot easier
00:05:01
Speaker
Because I was able to do the second one. I was able to improve. I was able to do the third one. I was able to improve. I was able to do my fourth interview. I was able to improve. And little by little, I began to improve my confidence with my podcasts and interviewing people and making episodes come out.
00:05:17
Speaker
I was able to gain confidence because I put in those reps and I began making a connection with what I was making. Because with the connection with the people I was interviewing, the connection with the episodes I was making by myself, I was able to make that connection. And after that first one, everything began to spiral and snowball. And that's all it takes. It's just one little thing for you to help you gain your confidence.
Three Key Steps to Confidence
00:05:43
Speaker
So these are the three things that I talked about. Number one, you must practice your skills. Number two, you must make a connection with your pottery and your skills so that your skills and connection connect. Number three is go out and sell just one piece of pottery that you have made and that you think looks good. Go out and sell just one. Don't worry about making, it's selling a whole bunch. Just sell one.
