gone Hello everybody, welcome to a view to a podcast
00:00:08
Speaker
So tonight we are gonna be going over from Russia with love and I think it is worth stating that for me from Russia with love was in my top five So I'm very excited to talk about this and before we went into this we did our pre-watch Scoring cat did not like from Russia with love and so we've got a fresh watch and we'll see how much it has changed the world's opinion Yes. um Our pre-watch takes were that this was the one I had seen the most and remembered the least.
00:00:39
Speaker
And ah shall I do a little spoiler? After Taylor and I watched it, I did say, oh, so I just don't like this. Isn't that amazing?
00:00:50
Speaker
like i don't even know what to do with that. We're gonna have some discussions about it, but before we do, would you like to know the team behind this incredible movie?
Film's Creative Team and IMDB Commentary
00:01:00
Speaker
Please. and that incredible is in all the squares, all the scare quotes for me, like,
00:01:07
Speaker
My fingers are going off on quotations with incredible movie. This is the episode where Kat loses all credibility as a critic. Listen, this is the episode where people learn that I'm always right and they should listen to me. um Listen, we need to have this established. Okay, same team as Dr. New.
00:01:34
Speaker
It's ah directed by Terrence Young, same writers, Richard Maybaum, Joan Arwood, et cetera, et cetera. And shall we get into everyone's favorite parent guide?
00:01:46
Speaker
Oh, yes. IMDB. Legendary. Factual IMDB. parents No hearsay. No legends. no no No. Completely accurate. And as we learned from last time, makes all the sense in the world. Like the fact that sex and nudity, including the opening credits, which we will get to, I'm sure.
00:02:05
Speaker
Mild. You know, you just see nips, but it's mild. Violence and gore has stepped up to moderate, though. This is the last one that I watched on DVD, so maybe it's more apparent on Blu-ray.
00:02:18
Speaker
That's the thing. ah Profanity mild, alcohol, drugs, and smoking mild, and frightening and intense scenes. Still mild. So I don't know what's up, parents of
Humor and Media References
00:02:30
Speaker
IMDb. Maybe your standards are just really loose.
00:02:33
Speaker
Get a grip, parents of IMDb. Get it together. Have some discernment. Some discernment? Discernment. Listen, you're hearing what you want to hear.
00:02:44
Speaker
Maybe they're getting it all secondhand, like that poor woman who had to go on Fox News and talk about Mass Effect and she had never played it. Ha ha ha ha ha.
00:02:57
Speaker
I think that they got her on that show for one reason or another, and it just kind of backfired. But anyhow, away from video games. Back to Just reminds me of that SNL Bobby Moynihan character, the guy who hears the news secondhand.
00:03:11
Speaker
You hear about this. You hear about this ah this James Bland guy. James Bland? He shot a doctor. killed a doctor. He was ah he was a and he went, Doctor, no!
00:03:25
Speaker
Yes. Oh my gosh, you killed James Bond. Sorry,
Film Vibe and Action Sequences
00:03:30
Speaker
this spoiler. yeah ah So should we start by revealing our total or just like gradually? Oh no, let's let's let's just's just go gradually.
00:03:40
Speaker
Let's walk up the hill together, baby. eat into it Yeah, more foreplay. I was going to say it all comes back to it. yeah So yeah, the first thing we're going to talk about is the vibe of the film. And boy howdy, I forgot enough of this film that coming back to it was amazing. It gets eight from me.
00:04:01
Speaker
Okay, what what about the vibe resonated with the old Ghiblis? Like, this is this is like Empire Strikes Back level of hoey like coming out swinging hard. Like, everything. Like, the opening sequence is amazing. Like, we'll get to it when we get to it. But depending on how you characterize Grant, he might top the list for whatever category we decide to put him in.
00:04:28
Speaker
And you're talking about the ah the blonde bond? Yes, Barry. Russian Bond. that word with the most Isn't that where Archer's Barry came from?
00:04:39
Speaker
Was this guy? Possibly. i actually don't know Archer at all. But yes, the the vibe is strong in this. I think I only have like a handful of complaints of like the vibe overall, like the music mixing, like John Barry score.
00:04:54
Speaker
Fantastic. The mixing in this movie. Sorry. That's not really what this is about, but it threw me, it took me out a little bit, but I'm like, part of them this is, you're playing like, I'm like, you're playing it like too high a volume. However, there is some amazing diegetic music in the very, um well, not the opening sequence, but kind of like the post, um,
00:05:18
Speaker
post-spector secrets I'm like oh that's cool yeah but yeah the vibe is great Bond is the man he's the only person who like remotely intimidates him is is M um the only person that i mean he he's just indomitable that guy except for his boss he knows he knows who's in charge but everything is great the locations are great The set pieces are great. Like I, I
Bond's Confidence and Film's Stakes
00:05:50
Speaker
given, well, except for Klaus Adam or Ken Adam, he is Klaus originally. Ken Adam's sets. We did the whole thing. We did. Aside from like his set designs, if this was a set, I wouldn't have guessed.
00:06:05
Speaker
I'm not saying it Klaus Adams sets are bad. They're amazing. I'm saying some of the locations they may have gotten are fantastic. um there are a few There are a few places where it breaks down a little bit, but I think just overall it's a solid Bond vibe. You've got comparable to you know contemporary Bond. I think the action is great. um it all sorry that's spoiler alert to But is it all contributes to the vibe.
00:06:32
Speaker
Stay in my lane. My favorite part of this is as Christian is talking about looking at the pained expression on Kat's face. ah Okay, so I gave this a six.
00:06:44
Speaker
And my literal note is sophomore slump tries too hard. I just feel like it comes in too. yeah Okay. So you mentioned with the score, how it comes in real hot. Like it's so high in the mix.
00:06:57
Speaker
I feel like that's the entire movie is that they went, Oh snap. Bond was successful. We're just going to go real hot. He's going to be like, confident to the max to the point where he's annoying he's going to be womanizer to the max to the point where i mean i feel we'll get to it with the bond girl but i have thoughts i just i i feel like the upped the amp on every aspect of a Bond movie, like locations, action, everything, to a point where it just became white noise.
00:07:37
Speaker
I just did not. oh I did not like the vibe. the vibe was The vibe was off for me. So, Taylor, tell me how wrong I am. You're very wrong. But like the thing that is worth pointing out that's so interesting to me is you were talking so much trash about this.
00:07:53
Speaker
I expected it to be lower than six. I'm kind of surprised you were that high. I will say my ending score was not that much lower than Dr. No, which surprised me as well. I probably was too generous. I'm too generous in everything in life. I'm too nice to this movie. You know, it's really hard being as kind and giving as I am.
00:08:14
Speaker
Your humility overshadows all your other virtues. I gave this movie a solid nine for the vibe. And I'll tell you why. Because look at that pained expression on Kat's face.
00:08:27
Speaker
It's so great. So good. The action was better. It was more thought out. It was more intense. It was more... The choreography on it was more interesting. Bond had an actual opponent that was really terrifying.
00:08:41
Speaker
ah The way it moved from set piece to set piece, the action was just... It was the way it needed it was like so slow. It's what are you talking about? oh yeah. I'm sorry. We had entire sections that just didn't need to be there.
00:08:58
Speaker
It's called from Russia with love. Why are we in Turkey for a million years? like Well, that that's something we'll get into with the Bond girl, but. you know, it's the most Italian Bond girl, there Russian Bond girl there ever was. Yes.
00:09:14
Speaker
No, but like, look, the idea that it's slow when you have a train fight to the death, followed by a train jumping off, followed by killing another guy, followed by stealing a boat. or No, no, before the boat was the helicopter that he shoots out of the air. Oh, I have thoughts on that scene, but go ahead with your vibes.
00:09:32
Speaker
The vibe is so good. he had so wrong about this All of this is done so much better in other movies. It's either homages to like North by Northwest, which does the helicopter scene better. I mean, after you see North by Northwest, that helicopter scene is lagging.
00:09:50
Speaker
It's just like... I will say that it does sort of like the ending. But can't help it. The ending, it kind of Peter Jackson's at points where it's like, okay, here's the end. Okay, no, here's the end. But it it it didn't it never irked me, but it was just like, oh this movie feels longer than the other than Dr. No. It does. life Yeah, it feels a little long. oh I'll give it that. I think that it it could have been a 10 if a few things were different. If it sucked.
00:10:17
Speaker
ah You're so, so wrong about this.
Villains and Henchmen Discussion
00:10:20
Speaker
It's embarrassing. And you should hang your head in shame. No, I am really realizing, I'm really realizing why this had no lasting memory to me. Because I guess every time I've watched this, I've just been bored out of my mind. Wow.
00:10:38
Speaker
I gave it a nine. Let's, I mean, what more can we say? Let's get the action cat. Yeah, let's talk about action. um ah So once again, I'm looking at all of my scores. I should go lower on all of these. Because I just did not. Well, I initially I'm going to stick with what I initially did. I initially gave this a seven for some really good stunt scenes and the train fight. I will say the train fight is solid. And I actually think Grant is a great opponent.
00:11:12
Speaker
That's just not. Absolutely. Not used as much as I want to. if the and If the train had been half of the movie, like what it feels like it is, um then that would have been much better.
00:11:27
Speaker
But like, so the train fight is good. There are some fairly decent stunt scenes, but it just feels muddy to me. Again, by the time we get to the helicopter, I'm just bored.
00:11:41
Speaker
I mean... board like this ah and i don't want to listen to taylor right now will you tell me your thoughts on the action yikes he's gonna be on my side i mean that's fine i just don't want to listen to you i want to listen to christian you don't want to listen to your husband gloat um So action also gets a solid eight for me. And again, I'm kind of using my wishy washy, like contextual contemporaneous, um, filming style. And I'm not well versed in cinema, but given that this is the mid sixties, most well versed in cinema among us, oh very specific cinema, very specific.
00:12:31
Speaker
I'm first in bad movies. Um, cat's like, why aren't you first in this one? Uh, that was terrible opportunity kat missed opportunity kat you know i'm just glad that you're filling in all the truth for me thank you i'm taking all of the riffing for you no this this gets a solid eight for me this like all of the different set pieces are great it's an improvement in in every way on dr no i liked dr no to to an extent but all of the like action pieces are great like that opening sequence because i had forgotten
00:13:03
Speaker
I had forgotten what that was about. And like, you know, fake out. It's not Bond that he's garroting. It's, you know, a some poor sap that, you know, Spectre had captured and dressed up as James Bond. I also love that trope of like the, you know, Mission Impossible-esque. It's like, oh, they pull off the mask and it's like, looks nothing like them. But, you know, I get to give them a break. Like prosthetics didn't look that good back then. I will say that was pretty solid. I enjoyed it.
00:13:29
Speaker
it So it was it was a great introduction. I was like, okay, Grant is dangerous. And he's like the best person that he can possibly like send out against this. um The other action set pieces are great. The ones that really stand out, not just like the main action pieces, like the the the shootout at the Romani camp.
00:13:54
Speaker
yeah the at the camp or um where they get ambushed but i even think that like there's some intensity in the non-action scenes like i was like like wow grant is like he is bond's evil twin it's like this like he is good he just gets cocky at the end so here's my question and taylor you can answer this along with your answer So one of my big things with Dr. No was there were scenes where I felt genuinely worried for Bond. like
00:14:27
Speaker
Like I said in the last episode, that pipe scene where
Spectre and Villainy Debate
00:14:30
Speaker
he's ripping off clothes and climbing and I thought there was something going to come after him. Were you ever actually concerned Bond's chances? want to concerned James You're never concerned?
00:14:45
Speaker
I don't want to be. So there's no stakes. No, it's not that. it's The stakes are how is he going to do it, not whether or not he can. Because, I mean, there's going to be a next. I mean, despite what they do with multiple movies where they fake killing James Bond, which is really strange. But, yeah, you're never you're never in danger. But like Taylor said, it's like how does he get out of this? And who else is going to die on his way to get Bond?
00:15:13
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, like, look I think that if I'm watching Bond movie, again, I'm looking for certain things. if i I don't know how to tell you this, but for most of the movies, especially the good ones, you're never thinking he's going to die. You're just like, wow, I can't wait to see how he doesn't die.
00:15:31
Speaker
But, okay, so you're not thinking he's going to die, but that whole sense of how is he going to get out of this one? There was never a moment here. Incorrect. Even in the train. Incorrect.
00:15:44
Speaker
Incorrect. I just never felt any curiosity with it. I felt like they were too much. He's capable and a step ahead.
00:15:55
Speaker
Here's my answer. I gave this one 10. 10 out of 10, the action in this movie. Perfect score. This is a perfect score for action movie. the the The insult that I just administered to Kat. I feel like the fights were great.
00:16:11
Speaker
The explosions were great. The tension was great. I thought it was all great. It's funny you say, when was I curious how he's going to get it? When he's on his knees in the train and Grant has him at gunpoint, I remember thinking, I don't remember how he gets out of it. I know he does, but like how does he actually do it?
00:16:26
Speaker
i I remembered the tear gas. I remembered that because, you know, the the nice foreshadowing that bond. yeah Incidentally, do you remember, just off the top of your head, like, what was Q's name credited as? Like, his character name. Like, llewellyn Desmond Llewellyn's character name. It wasn't Q. It was like... It's not Wandsworth, but it was like some, like... Like an actual name?
00:16:50
Speaker
Yeah, it was like a surname. like And, because he's just, you know, M brings him in, and it's Q division has got up this, and... oh that's true Desmond Loyal and comes in. But i it's like, you'll have to look it up. But it it took me off guard because I was watching the end credits. And was like, oh, he wasn't Q then. It was just guy, agent from Q Division.
00:17:12
Speaker
So I understand by it. Perfect 10. The action was a perfect 10 for me. I thought it was great. I really enjoyed the sequence. Basically, from the train on, I thought it was like nonstop action.
00:17:22
Speaker
I feel like ah the the thing with the helicopter, I literally, there were several. Calm yourself, Kat. My goodness. No, this is fine. Continue. Continue. There are points where the helicopter's diving at Bond, and I'm thinking, I think he, the actor might have really been in very real danger at this point.
00:17:40
Speaker
It's like, how good is this pilot? Like, hopefully. Yeah. Helicopters aren't that old at this point, like, in in operation. That's true. yeah Yeah. I thought the boat the boat chase was great. The explosions were a little too, like, obviously rigged, but, like, it was exciting. It wasn't gimmicky. He wasn't, like, doing any Pierce Brosnan barrel rolls and going underwater with the camera in his face.
00:18:02
Speaker
And this is a point where I'm like, what are the action scenes? We got the shootout in the camp. We got the train. We had the fake out at the beginning. When are the action scenes?
00:18:13
Speaker
ah The helicopter, which I didn't care for. i forgot about the boat chase. I'm going to be really honest up here. I forgot about the boat chase. then I guess the shoe.
00:18:26
Speaker
Does that count as an action scene? At the end, when she's trying to kick him, that's amazing. Catches him off guard. The only reason he makes it out is because the Bond girl saves him. who By betraying her boss, Colonel Bread. I mean, Cleb.
00:18:39
Speaker
It's great. That's right. Cleb. That drives me nuts that he would even leave the lector in a different room. You just went through so much do it. You're just going to casually leave it?
00:18:54
Speaker
Whatever. It's fine. It's fine. We're going to get to this in the Bond performance, but you have a very good point. There are several points that's where this is not James Bond being James Bond. This is Sean Connery being Sean Connery as James Bond. That's to come later. You asked for my score.
00:19:10
Speaker
It was a 10. Booyah. a Next category. Next category.
00:19:16
Speaker
Next category is the one-liners. And I... a kind of a big fat nothing burger for me again. They were better than the Doctor No. I gave it a 6.5, but I don't remember any of them, so I'm actually going downgrade it to like 5. I know they better. one yeah i just I don't remember them being particularly impressive.
00:19:32
Speaker
and And now that you know that you're saying that, my brain is completely empty. And I can't remember what the one one-liner was. It was... Oh, she got her kicks. after us nate or Natasha Romanoff. That's not... Cleb.
00:19:51
Speaker
cla Well, it's Cleb. But her name Taylor and I both know Cleb in Russian means bread. Yeah. Give us now our daily
Theme Song and Opening Credits
00:20:00
Speaker
bread. And she now, and but like, Cleb has like the most like faux Germanic it like does r trilling. She was just terrible.
00:20:11
Speaker
Yeah, it it was bad. i think i think that... We're not to the villain though. We're just doing one-liners. No, I know, but I think like on that point though, I think, I can't remember his surname, but the man who plays ah the father of every Turkish secret agent. Oh, they and Bay? Oh, Hardin Bay.
00:20:30
Speaker
he was ah He was played by a man named, I think his i think his first name was Pedro. as And I'm like, this isn't a Turkish accent. Some of the other guys were work like, sorry, that's a whole other thing. But like I loved the how casually like understanding like the...
00:20:50
Speaker
the The good guy's henchmen, the sons of this one man. I will say, he was by far my favorite part of the movie. Listen, he has a family business. Yeah. So, i the one-liners. meh they were They were not great. They were not terrible. Solid five.
00:21:04
Speaker
Kristen, what you got? Six. that I liked the one at the end better than I did the one from Dr. No. Like, I mean, same-sies almost, but I gave this one a little bit more.
00:21:18
Speaker
Because like it yeah Bond was like... He managed to squeeze out a one-liner after being completely like knackered. I mean, there were definitely higher volume.
00:21:30
Speaker
So I did give it a six. But you're right. i don't remember what they were. so yeah Now to the villain. I'm very curious what your thoughts are on the villain. So... how it This will all play out depending on how we classify. Because I feel...
00:21:49
Speaker
Grant was the villain. Like, even though he's technically a henchman, I feel that, like, he was the henchman. Er, he was the villain. Like, he was the nemesis. He was, like, the only one who really posed a threat. I mean, Cleb caught him in a down moment at the end, you know, tricked him.
00:22:09
Speaker
Because I don't know if he'd ever seen a photograph of her before. So i'm go i just I put them in different categories just in case, but the villain, meaning Grant, solid
Visual Language and Cinematography
00:22:23
Speaker
like This is, like apart from like what I remember of Trevelyan, Grant is more dangerous than Trevelyan, I think, in my book.
00:22:36
Speaker
That's Sean Bean, right? That's just you know however many years it's been since I've seen Goldeneye. As far as like on par like with that, he he only failed because he got greedy and he got...
00:22:52
Speaker
You know, he just got high on his own ego towards the end. But, I mean, if he had been just a machine, like, unfeeling, I think that he would have easily killed Bond.
00:23:02
Speaker
But, you know, we all have our Achilles heel. I'm going to be bold and say that I think Grant should be a henchman because he is being paid by somebody else to do the job.
00:23:13
Speaker
For sure. And that's why I left it. Yeah, well, that's... and So, that's what I say. Like, as if we what cleb is muscle yeah i think like specter in the shadow of specter is the villain which i give that a nine because it's just all the tropes we got the cat we got the shadowyness i uh i like that we don't get the reveal i really like a faceless villain are we just like shadow opposites on this movie i think so
00:23:45
Speaker
Christian, what did you think? for if Well, ah so we got Christian's muscle, but we didn't get the... If if Grant is not the the villain, for yeah sake continuity... Yeah, that's the thing. Yeah, so if the if we classify the villain as Cleb or even just Spectre in this context, that's hard.
00:24:06
Speaker
Because I didn't frame it. I didn't score it that way. If the villain is Cleb 3... three If Grant is the villain, 15. So I put them in different columns. So that, the yeah, Grant gets a 15 no matter what.
00:24:22
Speaker
See, and I think they're both henchmen because they're both acting... on another person's orders i like that analysis i didn't i didn't score them that way and my keyboard is up there and so i can't change my score um so foed it the the villain gets a three because if we're if i'm saying the villain is kleb based on that but if it was if it was actually specter i'd probably give it about an eight or nine um based on what they're capable of.
00:24:54
Speaker
I mean, their henchmen are incompetent. I mean, point. They're cruel, you know? The cruel. Oh, funny. So funny thing. I was looking at like the main secondary henchmen, the like tall, bald Who shows up in all the other Bond movies. Yeah, he's like the Russian guy in one of them. I'm like, I've seen his face before. He's in Octopussy. He's in, I think he's in The Spy Who Loved Me.
00:25:19
Speaker
He's in quite a few. Yeah, exactly. But so, I mean, for the sake of the total scoring that we have, the villain gets a three. Not according to that criterion, though. So, Taylor, what's your definition?
00:25:35
Speaker
I gave it a 2.5, and I gave it a 2.5 because they didn't make it clear who the main villain was supposed to be, because you could say it's Blofeld, because he's head Spectre.
00:25:46
Speaker
You could say it's Colonel Klebb, because she's the one who's enacting her
Bond Girl and Impact on Film
00:25:50
Speaker
own plan. You could say it's the the chess guy for a moment, but he's a piece of garbage whose plan completely falls apart anyway.
00:25:59
Speaker
I mean, whose whose plan are we following? Is Spectre giving the overall... Blofeld wants the thing done, but he's not the one telling them how to do it. He's like a financier. He totally telling them. His whole thing is, alright, so you have planned for every outcome.
00:26:18
Speaker
ed chess guy, number five or number three, I don't remember which one he is. He's like, yes, yes I have. And he says, okay, and Cleb, you are doing this. He's very clearly... Even if he is, i think...
00:26:33
Speaker
ah It just didn't do a whole lot for me. he was He was a menacing figure in the movie for maybe five minutes. He has a cat on his lap. And this is where, like okay as a standalone, it's like Dr. No was far more intimidating than oh totally any of the numbered members of Spectre have been so far.
00:26:54
Speaker
Absolutely. I agree with that. I still think there's nothing scarier than what you don't know. Well, that's like that's the argument that I've heard is that, you know, he's so powerful. He gets other people to do them. He's so powerful that you you and you respect that power enough to sit in a chair that will electrocute you or.
00:27:19
Speaker
I that's ah I think that's happens in Thunderball. Or to stand there while you get stabbed. Right. Or has a trap door to like piranhas or something like that. I think that part of what makes it less good is that in the context of the the franchise up to this point, this is the introduction of Blofeld. And Blofeld shows up as... You don't know what the cat is. There's no like, oh my goodness, it's the cat. there is It's just, who's this guy with the cat? he just He's kind of...
00:27:47
Speaker
He kills somebody. He plays mind games, but like... I mean, he has enough control to like, people will do his bidding. There's that. Exactly. but but i think But I think the problem was is Dr. No was too strong because he did kind of the same things. Like people obeyed him, would take their own lives to...

him. it It kind of reminds me like of James Earl Jones' character in Conan. He's like, that this is true power.
00:28:18
Speaker
like That kind of a thing. yeah That was slightly different like you know magical thing. I gave it a two and a half and I'm unashamed in it. say, however, that I really appreciate the way they sprinkled in the queer fear with Colonel Klebb.
00:28:35
Speaker
The way that she was like... Okay, that was the lightest queer fair ever. I was expecting way more. For 1963? Yeah, for 1963.
00:28:50
Speaker
No, continue. Bye.
00:28:54
Speaker
In the context of where it came from, that was like, she might as well have pulled out her... Listen. All I'm saying as the only queer person here... like, that's it? that's That's what's representing it? What? In the 60s! It was the 60s! She didn't even caress her face!

Speaker
No, but she was still very uncomfortable. She knew the implication. And she couldn't say no because of the implication, Kat. They weren't on a boat. What are you talking about? um Are you guys making It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia references? I don't get Absolutely. I will say, though, the part of the fear of Clint, though, is like, she goes, what happens if I say no? And she goes, well, then I'll kill you.
00:29:34
Speaker
that's That's solid menace. So she couldn't say no, not on a boat. But there was definitely, she's not going to say no. I felt like she was slut shaming more than queer leering.
00:29:47
Speaker
Okay. It's like, ah, you've had lovers before. This should be easy for you, whore. Like. but Okay. i You know, actually, now that you mention that, i'm I'm like, okay, yeah, that makes sense.
00:30:03
Speaker
That does make way more sense, actually. i guess we Oh, wait a second. Wait a second. Was I was i right? Like I am about everything? You're wrong about most of this. Take your grain of salt and we'll move on.
00:30:15
Speaker
Hold on. Take but take your win. So we did fill-ins, but we kind of have been smushing those with muscle. So you think Cleb sucks, Taylor. And Christian, you are also not on the Cleb fan.
00:30:26
Speaker
Yes. um I mean, i I do like that it's a scary woman. I'm always going to be a fan of that. I actually gave muscle eight because I put Cleb and Grant in the henchmen. I'm like, man, these are some really solid side fill-ins.
00:30:43
Speaker
I think they're great. So 10 plus negative two, I get i get you where your math is coming from. Yeah. I will say this. With Colonel Klebb, what I really liked about her that was done extremely well was like, you could tell she was a desperate woman who was like, I have got to pull this off for things to go bad. And the way that she acted, especially at the end where she's got the knife out and and Bond has the chair, i believed that the actress was legitimately fighting for her life.
00:31:12
Speaker
And that might just be because Sean Connery was like, I'm going to kill you. I'm going to hold this chair against you. Is this the point where we go obligatory Sean Connery slapping a woman and feeling too happy about it?
00:31:24
Speaker
Yeah, maybe. so So for you, then, the the muscle is eight. Yes. I gave the muscle a nine and a half. And I gave it solely based on Nash or ah Grant, I guess, ah immediate and significant improvement over the muscle from the last movie. Like not even yeah not even close.
00:31:47
Speaker
Grant, Nash, whatever. You know, the dude with the with the Jaws boat. one week Because he plays the the Robert Shaw ja robert sha actor. Yeah, he's got whole dones a doll's eyes.
00:32:02
Speaker
Just crept. OK, you didn't know that. I knew I knew the name Robert Shaw. I did not place it. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
00:32:12
Speaker
I thought he was great. I thought he was, like, legit scary. He was always in control in a way that Bond was trying to always be in control. I truly, like I said, when they were fighting on the train, it was like watching two very competent, capable killers trying to kill the other person.
00:32:28
Speaker
Bond seemed afraid and Grant did not. and Probably because he was a socalled sociopath or a psychopath or whatever. But like, i I do know the difference between sociopath and a psychopath. I think that he might have been a little bit of both.
00:32:41
Speaker
Spicy. Yeah. More sociopath than psychopath, obviously. But anyway, eight, nine and a half. And Christian gave him a 15. So um all in all, though, Grant, fantastic muscle.
00:32:52
Speaker
Oh, definitely. We all agreed on that. and Fantastic muscles. right i talk about are we sure cats not the only queer one you know i'm as straight as an arrow but henry cavill hey you know what i will say this anytime you follow up a sentence with but that everything before is no longer true is this where we talk about taylor's reaction to josh brolin and deadpool 2 Oh, that man was beautiful in that movie. Making sounds I have only made when seeing Michael B. Jordan in ah Black Panther. No, i'm i'm I am not panicky to be able to appreciate the male form. No, that's yeah that's just an objective thing.
00:33:34
Speaker
And Grant was great. I will say, I want him to be James Bond. I want movies about him. and I can't, I can't, I can't. So coming up next, we got the theme song. And so the theme song specifically is the song not to be confused with the opening credits.
00:33:49
Speaker
ah I gave it a seven and a half. And I said it was a good step in a good direction. i even said great step in a great direction. But It was still mostly the Bond theme instead of From Russia With Love.
00:34:01
Speaker
I think part of why this is I have to own my nostalgia on this. I have known the From Russia With Love theme song from the first time I heard it. It's been I can from memory pull it into my head. And that to me is the mark of a good From Russia With Love. Yeah, it's totally stuck in my head. So because it has such good staying power for me and has over the last several decades,
00:34:25
Speaker
That bumped its score up for me quite a bit. In the moment when it was introduced, it was mostly a Bond song. Throughout the movie, it's used very well. I yeah i think it's an effective, above-average Bond song, theme song. I gave it a 7.
00:34:38
Speaker
i like I like the crooning. I mean, compared to the mango tree, it's fantastic. I don't think I rated the mango tree lower low enough.
00:34:53
Speaker
I don't know if anybody has. That song was garbage. So, Christian, what do you give from Russia? Okay, because I totally forgot that we it wasn't like the musical staying like the instrumental. It was the song song. And I forgot that it comes at the end of this movie. um So to change my score real quick.
00:35:14
Speaker
at the very beginning. Yeah, okay. Good, nice callback. Um... It rhymes. Yeah, I give it a solid.
00:35:26
Speaker
That's more poetry. It rhymes. um Yeah, I give it a seven. You're too good at that. I'm not the best, but, you know, there are some other people out there who could probably do it better than I could. but Oh, do we have a special guest on the podcast? Thanks, George.
00:35:44
Speaker
Very well done, Mr. Lucas. The Jedi just cut them down like they're butter. They're pretty much useless. For the opening song, I gave it a six. Or, sorry, seven. I'm looking at the wrong column.
00:35:57
Speaker
But for the reasons that you've already said, it's a good step in the right direction. It is, like, the good, like... template I guess you would say for a James Bond song the score on the other hand like it just comes punching right out of the gate like I love it like I was a bit thrown off because you know in my collective memory Dr. No didn't start like that and I when I watched it I'm like what's this weird like Saul Bass wannabe opening credit sequence with no guitar and I also wanted to like would you say given the the year would you say that it's an imported Fender or would you say that Vox was a thing by now
00:36:34
Speaker
I have no idea. i i This is a fun tangential thing. I couldn't pick out a fender or a single coil versus a humbucker until like 10 years ago.
00:36:46
Speaker
Now I can hear really clearly, like, oh, that's a Telecaster. I can't do that, by the way. So... I'm the worst, but it's a fairly recent thing for me. And so I, I'm not a good tone person. Sean, our our friend, Sean is like a tone. oh He could wizard. He could tell. I could not tell.
00:37:05
Speaker
Anyway, what did you give the opening credits, Christian? Not the song, but the actual credits. The actual opening credits, I gave six. It's not great, not terrible. um It had some of the Bond hallmarks. And, i you know, objectively, it's like, it's not something I go for. It's like not something I'm looking for, but it needs to be creative. It wasn't creative. It wasn't.
00:37:29
Speaker
Some of the later ones can get very creative in the way that they incorporate... partially naked women into the credit sequences because that has to be a thing Bond. You somehow mispronounced completely. i don't know how you did that, but, you know.
00:37:43
Speaker
Well, ah be pastied. I don't know. how would Be pastied? Sure. i don't know. There's no pasties on those. I'm not i'm not scrutinizing every single frame.
00:37:55
Speaker
um You're not? No. i was As two people in the household who watched it whoever find who appreciate a fine woman's body... There was some scrutinizing going, I think. i I completely was disinterested in the point in the middle of the film where there was like the the belly dance scene. I was just like, ah okay, I guess this is happening. Here's thing. It was the cat fight for me where I'm like, this is the most gratuitous, stupid plot point, and hate it.
00:38:24
Speaker
You know what, Cat? You're right. I am Thank you. Do you know how that's just my favorite thing to hear in the entire world? ah Just got like a little thrill. i I have over the last decade plus, I think I have figured that a little bit out. Yes.
00:38:45
Speaker
Say it again. i Later. What did you give the opening credits? I gave it a two Like, like you said, there are people here who appreciate women's form.
00:38:59
Speaker
I, I understand that incorporating credits on a woman's body is a distinctly bond thing. And I do think it's done really well. Um, I also think it's done really well in spy hard, uh, those opening credits too. This felt lazy. ah It was artless. It was ugly. you couldn't even, you could barely read it It just felt like it was done for shock value instead of anything interesting to say.
00:39:30
Speaker
I mean, it did tie in with that scene the Rony camp. Which again, I didn't care for. Yeah, but there's at least, there's a thread. I'm not going to say it's a strong thread, but there's a thread. Tenuous thread. Tenuous thread.
00:39:44
Speaker
Gossamer. Yes. Oh, you're both going to hate me so much. i I said it was artless and crass. Oh my gosh.
00:39:54
Speaker
That was perfect timing.
00:39:58
Speaker
Look, again, in my mind, this is this is all a question of where are we in the context of all the Bond movies. So far, all we've had is Dr. No. So i for me, and this is just the way I'm doing it, this is not cause it's the right way, but for me, I'm not comparing it to some of the masterful stuff we've got coming down the line. I'm just thinking, okay, we have gone from...
00:40:20
Speaker
Something that was really bad, honestly, the last opening credits. I liked it. It just wasn't good. I liked the dots. It was fine. And least had style. Like, here's the thing. But it doesn't take place in Vegas. That had a style and an intention.
00:40:34
Speaker
This felt lazy. Even removing it from the good naked women later... It just felt slapped on. I'm going to get this out of the way and and just prepare myself for a very cold, lonely evening tonight.
00:40:50
Speaker
I gave it an 8. And I gave it an 8 because in the context of where it was at in the time of the world, in the context of where it was in the Bond franchise...
00:41:02
Speaker
Yes, maybe 8 would have been as generous hearing you guys display your dissatisfaction with it. I'm seeing your points. But for me, it was the belly dancers was a through line because of the Turkish, everything they did with that.
00:41:18
Speaker
There were close-ups of goose pimpled flesh. It didn't feel, to me, it didn't feel like it was like gratuitous the way that that entire catfight scene was. Yeah.
00:41:30
Speaker
Not as. Yeah. So just having like wavy lights projected on someone's head where you can't even read it. Like those like 60s like oil filter gels and like the.
00:41:43
Speaker
Okay. Okay. I don't recall asking for permission. So yeah. I didn't say you didn't have permission. I just said, okay. I saw the look in your face. I saw the look in your eye.
00:41:56
Speaker
The deep, deep disgrace that your husband... I enjoyed it. I liked it. It's ah it's not something that I would seek out. And maybe I would change it to make a a seven or a six after our conversation.
00:42:08
Speaker
But I didn't think it was... ah I didn't think it was terrible. i I thought that... the yeah I liked it.
00:42:20
Speaker
I'll change it to a six and a half. No, stick with it. It's fine. You can love you can love things.
00:42:31
Speaker
Adjust my my final score to... ah that put it down at No, you can stick ten toes down. It's fine. Oh, i I think that it's safe to say that every single person on this video call knows that when my toes are down, you're not moving them. That's true.
00:42:49
Speaker
Fair. Yeah. I'm fine moving it down because you made some good points. I don't think it was a tasteless, terrible thing. It's not the best Bond one in the context, again, of where it came from. Following Dr. No, a step in the right direction. I enjoyed it.
00:43:03
Speaker
Sure. I'll take that. So, now, we get ourselves to the Bond performance, and I believe, Kat, the floor is yours. Uh, did not care for this performance, but I will say... What?
00:43:21
Speaker
Shocker! Um, I mean, i did give it a six, so it's still above average, because Connery is still, you know, he's still Bond, he still is what it is. um I'm just going to read my literal notes, shall I?
00:43:38
Speaker
Go for it. He's a burnished penny. Both harsh and stupid. ah So like, not only is he too coppery just visually more unappealing to me in this one. ah Yeah, I just found him...
00:44:04
Speaker
Too overblown, too harsh. I thought he made some very dumb moves that I would not expect a Bond to make. um I mean, i get that they had code words going on, but I seem to go off with people way more easily.
00:44:23
Speaker
ah I still can't believe that he left the lector alone. I still can't believe how much he was trusting people. it just felt, yeah, he was just harsh, stupid, and visually unappealing to me.
00:44:36
Speaker
So what was the number you gave him again? ah six. A six. Okay. Maybe I should do it lower, but again, I'm just too big hearted.
00:44:51
Speaker
too charitable ah christian what you got for us so i gave this one a solid nine i think that i mean to your point you said mentioned that he was kind of stupid i'm like you know he did shed a bit of the stupid policeman um aspect that he had in the first one which i was like i wish he did more of those smart things But I think he was great overall.
00:45:18
Speaker
Like, I think it's just a solid, solid, you know, A- minus performance. um from connery so i remember sorry oh no i was just gonna say like his even just his like i said the only person he really fears up until you know he's down on his knees hands in pockets in the train car the only person he fears is m because he's the one who can you know take away his license to kill which we'll learn about Much later down the line.
00:45:49
Speaker
um But he is confident he knows what he's doing up to a certain point. He does do a few stupid things. However, i think the most stupid thing that he's done was putting his gun in his lap when he was talking to Professor Ernest P. Worrell in Dr. No. that was That was more stupid than leaving the lecture alone. I think that was more like relaxation, let my guard down, rather than just overt stupidity. like
00:46:22
Speaker
You would never have done that. he would have always He would have had his gun in his hand the entire time in while he was in the chair interrogating the other guy. So here is something that honestly just occurred to me.
00:46:35
Speaker
As we talked about how he is more of the detective in Dr. No, we see him more actively investigating. Does he do anything active like that in this? Or is he just like, I'm connecting with Bay. I'm doing what Bay tells me to. He does, but Grant is always one step ahead of him.
00:46:59
Speaker
And that's one of the reasons why I like him. is like He's going to the right places, but he's getting beat to the punch. That's true. Thankfully, thankfully you know Grant makes some missteps to...
00:47:11
Speaker
allowing them to you know discover the i can't remember the specifics that were on it but that little piece of paper inside of the cameo um when you know when when grant uh bumps off the the bulgarian agent guy yeah i you know i think that i yeah i like this one i gave it an eight And I gave it an eight because for the most part, he looked perfectly at ease. I do think to to answer the question about does he do anything action wise, I think the action is the murder. The action is like, I have to get this, this, uh, this lecture. I've got to get the lecture back to England.
00:47:55
Speaker
And he has to do it in a way that like, I will do anything to make that happen. I believe that when I see him doing it, I believe like it's clearly he doesn't give half a crap about the Bond girl, except that she exists to get this thing that he needs to get home i I think...
00:48:12
Speaker
I think he's very action-oriented. I do think, though, that he does make some very big missteps as Bond. And the biggest one for me is... I don't think that Bond is supposed to punch down.
00:48:26
Speaker
And he was way too casual in his violence towards the women in this movie, for my tastes. Yeah. Did not like that at all. Like, when he, at one point, was, like, threatening the Bond girl. Like, uh, I don't think James Bond is supposed to do that. I don't think he's supposed to be...
00:48:41
Speaker
I mean, ah clearly he's using her, which I can see happening, but doing it without any kind of feelings for her or her safety, that feels not Bond-esque to me. And you can talk about how in later movies that kind of happens again, but to me, felt out of place. I didn't like it. And it took took some points away from his performance in my mind.
00:49:06
Speaker
I agree. Oh, getting back on the same page. Oh, tell me that again. Christian, cover your eyes. Cover yours.
00:49:18
Speaker
ah Moving on to the visual language of the movie then. I think for me, so I gave Dr. No a five. For this one, I gave it a six and a half.
00:49:30
Speaker
And I gave it a six and a half because the sets... were pretty, they were interesting. The set pieces, I enjoyed the the set pieces, the action, which is probably what bumped it up a little bit.
00:49:44
Speaker
the The big difference for this between the last one and this one is that I felt like it looked real because they really shot them in those places. I don't know if they use the places in interesting or unique ways so much as like, hey, we're in Turkey, look at this museum. There's that mosque that's gonna be in every establishing shot that we're gonna do over and over and over again.
00:50:02
Speaker
We get it. You're in Turkey. Do something interesting with that besides have fights that take place in places that are turkey in Turkey. That was, none none of it was impressive unto itself. It was just pretty to look at because it happened to be pretty.
00:50:15
Speaker
Almost like it was accident.
00:50:19
Speaker
I like some of the secret things that they did, like the little compartments inside of the main guy's lair, sort of like hideout.
00:50:31
Speaker
It was a little cheesy, I will admit, when they're paddling down in the aqueduct to to get to the periscope. I like that.
00:50:42
Speaker
But it was still fun, but it was cheesy. Cheesy fun. Like Cheetos. Delicious. Not good for hemorrhoids. SNL.
00:50:53
Speaker
um I gave the visual language or the cinematography, I gave it a seven, mostly for camera shots. i really i really enjoyed the specter scenes. I think you can tell i really dug the villains in this. That will probably continue throughout Bond. But I liked that during those shots, especially when Blofeld was confronting three and five, that the camera was tilting with the boat. I just thought that was such a fun off-kilter addition.
00:51:27
Speaker
i wrote down seasickness by proxy in my notes. It makes you feel uneasy. It's supposed to I liked it. um And then, ah you know, I thought the mosque scenes were beautiful. So yeah, for tilting and for the onsite shooting, like, sure, take a sip.
00:51:47
Speaker
I'm impressed that they actually shot in around Hagia Sophia. Well, i guess it's the the mosque of the Hagia Sophia. um I was impressed that they were able to do that, but I'm sure they had some latitude. But then given given the the reaction of the Vatican towards the the James Bond films, I think it was even Dr. No, like i'm I wonder if they would have been granted the same sort of latitude.
00:52:18
Speaker
had they had it had that same sort of reputation but um so i wonder if it's like okay we got that shot early we got we got to shoot there we're never gonna be able to shoot at another famous religious uh just do everything which is a significant building again um i did like some of the shots shots were well done obviously they're not you know it's not hitchcock level but I did like a lot of like the low angle stuff that they were doing inside of the High Sophia. i like They got some good coverage during some of like the action set pieces. I i completely forgot about the the like the little assassination sequence with the billboard.
00:53:02
Speaker
That was really clever. Oh, that was cool. I loved And I did like how... She should have kept her mouth shut. There we go. That was a great one-liner. There we go.
00:53:13
Speaker
oh Oh, goodness. Okay, that'll bump up the one-liners vote for me. That's why I gave one-liners so high, that one. Sorry. Go ahead, Christian.
00:53:24
Speaker
Oh, no, no. i But I think overall, some highs and some lows. there were there were In the Romani camp, there were there was some just kind of lazy...
00:53:36
Speaker
stuff going on that was just like, oh this is our B unit's going to shoot this while we, you know, send someone off to do all the expensive establishing shots. The B unit's going to shoot these two women who apparently going to try and murder each other and then be sex kittens to James Bond because... don't even get me started on that.
00:53:55
Speaker
Yeah. It's like they have no no brains. No will. will also say, um you're right. Kat, you're right about that.
00:54:10
Speaker
I will say... Yikes. um I will say, too, that there is far less day for night, which I approve of. The... ah rear projection is better. that You do not lose like your forced perspective. like It's not awkward. um And I think just overall, they were able to get more dynamic shots. like I think that one of the things that I look for, because I'm a weird nerd, is like I'll look and see, like when they do shot reverse shot, I'll see like how close the reverse is to the primary shot.
00:54:47
Speaker
And there there weren't there weren't any, there wasn't anything terribly egregious in the train car. There was in Dr. Noah, now I can't remember which, but it's like Bond is doing something very specific and saying something very specific. And when it cuts to the reverse shot, it's just like him sitting like you know taking a taking a break from you know just phoning it in on his reverse i feel like i know exactly what you're talking about i think it was the dinner scene yes just in a completely different spot at the table yeah some of those little things but yeah overall pretty good
00:55:25
Speaker
Which brings us to the final thing. Bring us home, Kirsten. Oh, boy. um Solid six for the most Italian Russian Bond girl ever. um i And and i what I do appreciate is is that she wasn't trying overly hard to do a Russian accent. I think that for most...
00:55:48
Speaker
especially non-European, but for most like English speaking audiences, you would have just thought, okay, this is an accent, but it sounds natural because it's consistent. And it was probably just her Italian accent popping through reading English lines. I don't, i mean, i I didn't look at her IMDB page. i don't know what else she'd been in, but I think that would have been enough to obfuscate the fact that it's not, but I appreciate that it wasn't. It's like,
00:56:15
Speaker
watch You watch Hunt for Red October and listen to Kiwi Sam Neill try to do a Russian accent, and it is the most hilarious thing in the world. Bless you. Bless you, Sam Neill. You're great.
00:56:27
Speaker
Treasure. I feel like I should say just real quick about about that movie Hunt for October. I love that movie. And I on my so missionary learned Russian spoke Russian.
00:56:38
Speaker
It was by making fun of that movie that I realized that if you speak Russian, actual Russian with a Sean Connery accent, it's actually easier for Russians to understand you. ah Really? I don't think I ever heard that one. Yeah, like I remember one time I knocked on the door and I was like so sick of having people not say anything. And so I was like, And so was like, And so I was like, And this lady was like, Oh, please come in. And I was like,
00:57:00
Speaker
The power of Connery. and so i was like screw it dude it's like drsh with you mua voriation of make just co missionary and this slate like oh please come in and i was like oh no the power of connery This is so embarrassing, but this is 100% a true story.
00:57:20
Speaker
So we go in there, and ah the translation of what I'm about to say is we offer free free English classes. This is quite literally what we we this spot muroom we could she um now hes an we could tellish double And then I just went straight into my normal voice.
00:57:38
Speaker
cleared my throat and pretended that I cleared the Connery away. at the lady... The lady gave me the funniest look. She's like and I just went, just please don't say anything about that.
00:57:50
Speaker
And we never saw them again to the shock of nobody. But yeah, for you, Kat, because Kat's been doing Duolingo with Russian for a while. If you'd like to speak with full Russian accent, Oh my goodness.
00:58:04
Speaker
like we putging fire to It's the laziest. I have like a thousand consecutive days on Duolingo. Do I really know Russian? Not even a little bit, but I can read Hey, hey, hey. something.
00:58:17
Speaker
Counterpoint to that, Kat. How did I ask you where you wanted to go to dinner tonight? In Russian. That's right. And I only knew chicken because I'm like, okay, Petitsa's bird sounds like bird. Okay.
00:58:32
Speaker
who i say Yeah, I was like. clearly it's a I know that's a bird. And also hamburger is basically like From Russia with Pelmeni. Yes. See, there was no Pelmeni. Pelmeni would have bumped this movie up like five.
00:58:54
Speaker
Okay. Speaking of actually rating stuff, Bond Girl, I also gave her a six, mostly because she is Gorgeous. Like what a beautiful woman.
00:59:07
Speaker
And that's about where it ends. I hate her entrance. I hate it. Well, not her entrance, but her in bonds yeah and Her just being in the bed.
00:59:18
Speaker
Lazy. Just. yeah There's no intrigue. There's no spark. She's just like offered on a platter and that's her the entire movie. Why would love Bond? And she seems to be okay with it.
00:59:30
Speaker
Yeah. but He didn't ask her to do that. That's the thing. It's like clubs like do whatever this man says. And she's just like doesn't even like give him the opportunity. she's just like, well, I assume this is what a chauvinistic 1960s male would want. I mean, pun intended. Nailed it. um I also gave it a six.
00:59:52
Speaker
I gave her it was at seven. But I as you two were talking, I realized that I had been too generous. She was fine. The complete lack of chemistry between the two of them fully undercuts her capacity.
01:00:07
Speaker
As a woman, she makes more sense to me in that situation. She is a government agent working for Russia, so the idea of her being in a secret spy scenario... not quite as far fetched, perhaps as Honey Rider. And I how do you writer had like spark.
01:00:24
Speaker
She was. interesting Yeah, she was. She used to go get her. She was she was aiming to make five hundred dollars off of a single conch shell. single That's right. With ah with our good friend from from from Russia with love. I just the only reason it wasn't lower is because at the very end she shot her boss in the head to save Bond.
01:00:41
Speaker
Sure. She actually contributed something, something meaningful that changed the course of the movie.
01:00:49
Speaker
So there you go. A six. So six, six, six, the walk of the devil fashion show. Like. Nope. laundre Fashion show. That was her second biggest thing.
01:01:01
Speaker
First biggest thing. Naked in bed. Second biggest thing. Lingerie fashion show. oh the train. Oh, shooting her boss, I guess. Yeah. So where does this we've, we've gone through all the everything.
01:01:16
Speaker
What are our scores come to? I'm a six or 64 baby when I'm 64.
01:01:27
Speaker
I got to a sixty nine and a half. I thought it would be higher.
01:01:36
Speaker
Is that joke ever going to get old? Never. no
01:01:42
Speaker
What you got? i and i fifteen hours I guess 76.
01:01:53
Speaker
Wow. Yeah. I was pleasantly surprised. I'm like, okay, this might this is vying for so far. This is a top contender for my favorite Connery Bond.
01:02:04
Speaker
We'll see how Thunderball plays out. but Man with the golden That's Roger Moore. That's Roger Moore. Roger Moore's second outing. Cut that. Cut that. I think I meant the spy who loved me. Also also Roger Moore.
01:02:21
Speaker
Well, do I just not like Sean Connery as Bond? That's crazy. Maybe I don't. All right. So we did it. We from Russia with Lovin.
01:02:33
Speaker
I feel like I need to say something very explicitly to to all who are listening, mostly to my wife, though. I would break every Bond movie in half, every physical copy. I would destroy all the tapes if you wanted me to.
01:02:50
Speaker
I do love this movie and I'm teasing you for not liking it. But I just want you so much more than James Bond. I also want to make this very clear that I would never ask you to do that.
01:03:06
Speaker
I know. I know. No, no, This is more because we there was a little bit of heat in that conversation. And I just want to make it really clear that back but the heat that came from the conversation pales in comparison to my love for you.
01:03:18
Speaker
hey Hey, Taylor. Taylor. yeah Hey, Taylor. If you wanted to watch this movie again tomorrow, I would do it for you.
01:03:30
Speaker
Oh, hell yeah. I know what I'm doing tomorrow. I mean, what I think is Magnanimous Cat and Taylor Take All. Quick side story, by the way. And Christian, I want you to know from the death of my heart...
01:03:49
Speaker
But I'm just glad you're here. I treasure you as a friend. Yeah, absolutely. thank i want to say, too, that it's I know Kat means it because when we were almost dating, but not quite, she hated everything Jim Carrey. And the way that I knew she was serious about spending time with me is when she approached me and said, let's watch Dumb and Dumber.
01:04:08
Speaker
I do not take this for granted. That's I. Yeah. So just in case anyone was like a little concerned hearing mommy and daddy arguing over a stupid movie. I had never heard that story before. Really? really it's know every day Yeah. no I didn't know that.
01:04:22
Speaker
Yeah, that was ah that was a big deal. i Because Kat and I fake dated for a while and it just didn't go anywhere. We had a friendship, a thriving friendship for a while. A one-sided friendship. Maybe a little one-sided. But yeah, when she she reached out to me, she's like, let's hang out. I was in Boston at the time. She's like, out when you get back.
01:04:45
Speaker
I said, okay what do you want to do She said, let's watch Dumb and Dumber. And that's that I was like, wait, what? Wait. Okay. And so she came over and she... was like an activate the sleeper agent. It's like code word. It was funny because when I got back, I thought she was lying to me. And so I took her with me to the mall to get some new pants or something before the thing. And I was an absolute dick to her. Yep.
01:05:03
Speaker
Super cold. just thought... I thought that she was lying to me again. But not only did she watch Dumb and Dumber, I think it was the first time we held hands and cuddled. And then we watched Wayne's World immediately afterwards.
01:05:16
Speaker
was a big deal. Fantastic. Which was a much better movie. Is your what? Wade's World, much better movie. Oh, yes. yeah Very much yes. It's okay. You can love Dumb and Dumber, Taylor. It's fine. Oh, I do. I respect it.
01:05:31
Speaker
Unapologetically. Unapologetically. In my other podcast, and i had podcast i was i was ah I had a guy on who I quoted Dumb and Dumber to made him laugh. i was like, that's how I know you're a good guy.
01:05:45
Speaker
Anyway, thanks for joining us on this ah this fantastic journey to the center of the earth. Taylor and I need to do marriage counseling now. It's fine. Yes. ah Coming up next will be Goldfinger, which I'm excited for. Kat, you like that one, right? I do. This is probably going to be my favorite Connery.
01:06:04
Speaker
It's a pretty... Goldfinger! Sorry, that was a terrible Eartha Kidd impression. No one can do a good one. It's fine.
01:06:15
Speaker
