Introduction and Guest Intros

00:00:11
Speaker
All right, episode three, Little Woods Outdoors. This is our podcast, baby. Y'all made it all the way to episode three. True fans, or you just discovered us. Either way, I'm happy. Thanks for being here with us. My name's Whit Bell. Tonight, we got our boy, Jacob Martin, Fort Smith. We got my cousin, Cole Martin, and then we got my boy, Drew Hampton, in desert.
00:00:42
Speaker
Bless his heart. I don't even know if they got water pressure in desert right now, but he's on the mic. Um, rest of us here.

Tech Troubles and Podcasting Challenges

00:00:50
Speaker
Hopefully episode two didn't turn you off too bad. Uh, we had a little technical difficulties, a couple of country guys trying to work the mic, uh, trying to figure out this computer stuff. We're, we're going to get it figured out just tonight. Try to get us back on pace.
00:01:08
Speaker
This is just going to be a round table discussion about what we've been up to and trying to get everybody back into it. Cause we got a little too technical on the last one, trying to get a interview in and, and I think, I think we can do a lot better if you just give us another chance.

New Music and Copyright Concerns

00:01:25
Speaker
So, um, anybody got anything to lead us off just right off the bat. I know we got some new theme music leading in, uh,
00:01:34
Speaker
My cousin Jed from up in Jonesboro sent us that, uh, hardcore listener. He's listened to both episodes and he said we needed some, he said we needed some tunes. So, uh, hopefully that's not copyrighted so we don't get sued or something, but I guess what it is. I guess it is what it is.

Holiday Mishaps and Well Wishes

00:01:59
Speaker
Uh, no, uh, we've got the holidays past us and, uh,
00:02:05
Speaker
Happy New Year to everybody. It's gonna be a good year. It really doesn't feel like it's 2023 yet, but in our last episode, y'all missed a little brief period there. Drew's trying to wish y'all a Merry Christmas.
00:02:25
Speaker
What y'all to know that that dead space was just a bunch of drew rambling, drew, just, just give us a recap. What'd you say let's get a replay instant replay, please. Well, uh, ever since I've lost water pressure, you know, I put some self tanner in the water and everything else. So it hasn't been the greatest experience over the Christmas holidays, but, uh, but yeah, it was just, uh, wishing everybody a Merry Christmas and, uh, a safe holiday trip. I know a lot of people were traveling with the family. So.
00:02:53
Speaker
I know I did a lot of traveling, just got back in myself, and I'm looking forward to the start of this year to do more things with you guys. I know we're hitting our second split here, so I'm excited. I'm ready to get going. I'm ready to get started.

Fatherhood Humor and Parenting Challenges

00:03:07
Speaker
I know we've got a lot of big things coming up here in this 20-23 year, so I'm excited. That's right. That's right. My boy Cole, did you get your kids what they wanted this year or what? Oh, yeah. They got more than what I thought they did.
00:03:23
Speaker
I'm just gonna let the grandparent, I'm gonna let the grandparent's buy from them, buy for them now. And I'll, you know, skip Santa Claus. Santa Claus is the way to go though. Everybody's looking for Santa Claus. If Jake had a little bit of white in that beard we're looking at, it'd be, I could have sworn we were looking at it right here. Give me about 15, 20 years. I'll be, I'll be down there at the local mall.
00:03:51
Speaker
for a rant, Jacob. Just side hustling, Santa, you know, I'm game. Hey, I give it about two months when that new baby's born, that thing be grayer. We look like salt and pepper out there. Two months, talkin' about 16 days. You ready for it? See a real sleep. I'm ready. I guess.
00:04:16
Speaker
Yeah. If, if, if y'all don't know already, Jacob, he's got a baby on the way. I mean, we're in the month that it's due now. So it's, it's, it's getting real. Uh, podcast days for Jacob are going to be, uh, uh, he, he's still going to be here. He's still gonna be here. I'm just kidding. There ain't going to be no days off for Jacob. He's got this. Uh, but.
00:04:41
Speaker
Nah, we're happy for you. We're happy it's not us at the same time, so congrats, brother. It's coming up. Yeah, it'll be here before you know it. He'll be ready to meet all y'all. My boy Cole, he's constantly having to beat his four kids out of the room so we can do a podcast. So, I mean, he's got plenty of experience. He might be able to shed some light on the situation, Jake. Yeah, I'm one shy of a basketball team, son.
00:05:09
Speaker
No, there's no insight man. I don't know the best advice is no advice, you know I don't know what I'm doing. But you know, I've made it this far, you know, I got a got a 10 year old so Who knows? Hey, I'm just wondering did that a RTS come in the mail for you for return to sender on that kid or I said a little too late to get a warranty on that I Don't have one I ain't got one either
00:05:41
Speaker
Well y'all been up to y'all uh y'all been doing any hunting Yeah, we went through the day what uh we leave uh We went duck hunting for Christmas right after Christmas and then uh, we went do some and then we went goose hunting and then we went duck cutting Yesterday wasn't it? Yeah, all day for yesterday
00:06:08
Speaker
And, uh, yeah, that's Saturday morning. Yeah, we got into them though, didn't we? Yeah, no, that was

Hunting Adventures and Weather Impacts

00:06:15
Speaker
a good time. I, you know, episode one, we're talking about, we haven't been, we're, we're about to get into it. Well, yeah, we've been about three times since then, but Hey, those three times got plenty of stories and all in themselves. Cause is, uh, we had, we've had some pretty good success here. I mean, I think.
00:06:36
Speaker
I think out of everything we've kind of figured out there is, you know, the weather's been playing the biggest factor for us. Um, we had that real down here in Arkansas, we had that good freeze come down. I mean, what was it up? I was just sitting up in negative 30 feel like up there on UJ something like that. I mean, it was cold.
00:07:01
Speaker
I don't know what the coldest windshield, but I know I was working in it trying to keep all them gas wells flowing. It was a minus 14. And how did that work out for you? Uh, oil field and cold temperatures are not the best to get along. It, uh, it hit us pretty good, but we got some good guys and.
00:07:25
Speaker
A lot of experience. So we made it happen. Keep that. Now we can take a second to appreciate our sponsors. Thank you merit energy for, uh, the sponsorship, um, shout out. Uh, but now they, I mean, when I was talking to you, it sounded like half the half of everything freezes up. I mean, everything uses a little bit of water on that, huh?
00:07:51
Speaker
Yeah, those wells, they'll burp up some water and gets in your surface equipment and you got to get out there and keep it drained and thawed out and keep that gas flow into the pipelines for everybody. Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
00:08:11
Speaker
I mean, if, if you don't do it, who would? So, I mean, and, and kind of addressing that a little bit further, Drew's got a little bit of family up in Northwest Arkansas. That's kind of probably more closer to that negative 20 30. I was talking about, uh, feel like temps, but, uh, they had to miss Christmas and.
00:08:33
Speaker
All that. Yeah, mom and dad called me and they very rarely use their fireplace if that tells you how cold it really gets here. And I thought it was really crazy to me that dad said I had to use a fireplace and everything else that he could find just to keep the house warm. And it just reminded me of being up north. You know, that's more of a common occurrence, I guess, but
00:08:59
Speaker
It was, it was pretty cold from what dad told me. And I'm sure, you know, as Jacob was mentioning it, it was kind of unexpected. And now we're back in the 60 degree weather. I'm wearing shorts on January 1st, which is unbelievable. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. January 1st, it's like almost 70 degrees here at my house. And I loved it. And I loved it. They're calling for storms and tornado weather and.
00:09:25
Speaker
Welcome to Arkansas. You can stick around for two weeks and it'll change. So this weather is going to be crazy. Everybody's going to get sick here in the next couple of weeks. Yeah, I'm glad it's gone for a little bit. I don't mind the cold, but that's just a little too much for me.
00:09:48
Speaker
I'm, uh, glad to have two red bones back outside in their pen. They've been played up in the house. Yeah. And they stink, you know, they go rolling something or everything that I don't want them to do. They do it. Yeah. I mean, but when that cold hit, it's kind of like anybody, I mean, what's the first thing you're going to do when you're, I mean, you imagine yourself being a,
00:10:15
Speaker
Something that lives outside, right? Like a bird, a deer. I don't know what deer do when it gets that cold. I ain't never killed a good deer when it was just freezing cold. I think they're laid up. The deer I seen milling around in that cold, they were all fluffed up.
00:10:32
Speaker
You know, like they look like a, like a North face jacket on the back of them. They were all fluffed up, like they were all drawn up. Well, I, the, the, I caught that day. What day was that Cole? We went out there and chased those geese around. That is Wednesday. I think it was Wednesday. No, Wednesday's when I called you. Thursday we went.
00:10:55
Speaker
Wednesday afternoon, I got off work a little bit early. Don't tell anybody. I wasn't sick. I just got off early and rode over to the farm straight from work to the farm, watched. And it's just kind of one of those weird events where it was that cold that everything was just, anytime there was a little bit of defrost, they were out there trying to eat.

Mallard Scouting Success

00:11:20
Speaker
I mean, which I give them credit. I mean, the cold will make you hungry.
00:11:25
Speaker
I was in Colorado trying to elk hunt and it was 12 at night and we're about to starve to death. I thought, but anyway, so the big waters open fields freeze up. They thought just a little bit in the evenings. And, and I wrote over there that Wednesday afternoon, I I'm pretty sure I called all three of you guys and was like, Hey, I ain't never in my life seen this many Mallards walking on dry land in Arkansas. I mean,
00:11:53
Speaker
Cole, how many did I tell you was out there on that field? I might've exaggerated. Well, this was the afternoon. So, uh, you said 2000, so, you know, minus about a half and then cut it, cut it, cut another quarter. Yeah, there was maybe 250 walking across that field. Oh, I know. He called me and he was telling me how many was out there and he's like, you want to go? And usually.
00:12:16
Speaker
whenever it's just a one day scout, you can throw it up, you can throw up a quarter and it's gonna land on the zero percent. You ain't gonna kill nothing. But no, we went out there and we couldn't even drive in the stakes. The ground was so frozen. Oh, it was cold and froze, man. We've been locked up for what, about four or five days on the ground. Yeah, that was easy. Fourth day of good freeze there.
00:12:44
Speaker
Since we ain't been hunting that much with, you know, we wasn't really prepared. There was just three of us and I forgot the drill and the auger and all that stuff so we could get it in the ground. But, uh, I'll be honest. I never thought it was going to be that frozen as I mean, cause that was a field that my dad had took a rip or two. I mean, you would think that you drive across it right now at 70 degrees. You're not going to get a ranger across that thing. I mean, it'd be like.
00:13:14
Speaker
A bogged city out there, boy. That's when y'all take me when it's that sloppy, you know? Yeah. Yeah, we had to call Harvey's record to get the side, the side out. That ain't no joke. Hey, going off that hunt, y'all got to tell me a little bit about this jewelry you found on some feet dangling on that hunt. Got to hear the story about that. Tell me who, who claimed that bird, who said who shot who, and this, that, and the other, so. Well, we, uh,
00:13:44
Speaker
We've been having suspects land and I guess it was our first snow group. No, it was our second group come in and we shot and then it was just kept coming wave after wave. They keep coming. A couple of them would commit a couple of what will finally, we, uh, I wouldn't call it sky busting. Would you? It, I mean, it was pretty high anyways. Well, I don't know what we had two or three. Yeah. Three fall out of there and the two fell close to us and then one sailed off. He's a good ways away. I could see.
00:14:15
Speaker
It's in Oase after him. It was at the Black Poodle after him, boy. I'm telling you, it was over. Yeah, the old Labradoodle. He's finally mad at me because we went hunting. Anyways, he got out there and what he got right after the edge of the decoys and I looked up where I looked and I said, is that a band? By that time, we set it about one second apart.
00:14:39
Speaker
as old, what, Bandy, no eagle head. It was a big, it was a bodybuilder showing. It was a thick one. Yeah. You know, that whole, that brings me to a good point. You know, we did kill band, but it brings me to a good point. Drew's talking about, you know, and you were talking about how high we were shooting at them. I mean, if we have a line of them come over,
00:15:03
Speaker
And there's only three of us and we killed three out of it. Was it really sky busting? I mean, or was it just really good shooting? I beg the differ on that one, man. I mean, you had two bales.
00:15:17
Speaker
and a Morton hunting. So, I mean, we knew we were gonna be killers. I mean, right off the bat. I'm gonna have to stop you there. I've seen all of you guys shoot. And we all know that it takes about six shells just to take out one duck. So, I'm not sure. Oh, I definitely hit mine on the third shell. The truth will set you free, my friends.
00:15:43
Speaker
I really don't think, uh, it was sky busting, you know, close, you know, close, but it was committed. We had some committed. I thought John claimed it. Well, well, I, I got the, the dog got it and we got back. And then, uh, I was like, well, we're out here on y'alls ground. Y'all can find over it. So I just handed it to the right. I didn't even, I didn't even say nothing. I, uh, I don't think, I don't even think Cole was shooting that round.
00:16:12
Speaker
I think I shot every round under something. I hit anything. I had my whole, what I have, I had the old, uh, not the Benelli, but the, uh, that a 400. Yeah, you did have that a 400. I mean, Hey, we've known you from the beginning as a Benelli, super black eagle, one cold-blooded killer. And you keep trying to bring other guns with you. I don't know what your problem is.
00:16:37
Speaker
Yeah, I was shot very poorly. But I got my redemption the other day though. I brought those Super Black Eagle original out and we, I mean, I probably killed half the ducks the

Banded Bird Debate

00:16:51
Speaker
other day, you know? Oh, easy. Easily, yeah. But no, back to claiming, I guess there, you know, now John,
00:17:03
Speaker
I let John and Whit and John, he said, I'm pretty sure I shot that and I just kind of looked over at Whit and just shook our heads, you know, whatever. That's right. Now, at the end of the day, I'll be completely honest. I was just shooting amongst them. So I can't be claiming nothing. I might've hit it. I probably did hit that bird, but if Little Brothers wants the band, that's good with me. I don't care.
00:17:32
Speaker
We should have gave it days. Yeah. We got to get him a necklace made all them. He picked up. Yeah. That'll be number four. I guarantee you what? That's number four is picked up. Yeah. And I guarantee you three of those were with me. Weren't they? They were. Yeah. Cause I got, cause I'm wielding a weapon son. When I go out there, we kill him.
00:18:00
Speaker
Oh, and we ate in a mud field. Yeah. Well, sounds like I need to start going when it's frozen. Yeah. Wait till it's cold and show up. No. Hey, we went on a duck hunt, I guess two weekends ago, me and, uh,
00:18:25
Speaker
A couple of buddies of mine and a guy I never hunted with named Joseph. He's pretty good dude. Tyler and Joseph hopped in their boat and me and my buddy Weaver got in his boat and they took off out in front and they scouted this the weekend before. It might be a little hairy getting up in here because we don't know what the water is going to be like because this is like a tributary in the Arkansas River.
00:18:52
Speaker
We leave the boat ramp. I sit down in the front of the boat, facing the back, just snug as a bug. And, uh, we take off and then my phone's ringing just a few minutes after we took off. And, uh, it's Tyler. He said, Hey man, he said, slow down. He said, we're just around this corner. He said, we done crashed into the bank. I'm like, Oh man. So I'm honored. We were telling him to check up and, uh,
00:19:19
Speaker
We get up there and he's like, he's like, man, we just crashed in this bank. And so he's already sketched out. I'm already sketched out. Cause I finally turned around and look at what we was driving through. I'm like, I need laid back down and, uh, got everything going again and headed on up there and.
00:19:43
Speaker
We went five and a half miles up in this creek. It took an hour and 45 minutes and we needed about six chainsaws and had to jump a pipeline, had to go across a gravel bar. I don't know if you ever seen a 40 horse Merck throwing baseball sized rocks up out of the water, trying to get up a gravel bar. It's pretty interesting.
00:20:12
Speaker
We finally made it up there, ended up having to walk a little farther than we wanted to and we're already behind schedule and we got in there and ducks were trying to get down and basically just threw it together, chunked some decoys out, we killed, I don't know, five or six green heads and
00:20:32
Speaker
It ended up being a good hunt. It's just hard to get to, hard to get out. It was about a 12 hour day after it was all said and done. That water was still coming out when you were going up, wasn't it? Oh yeah, it was, that's the only 240 horse mercury's ever been up that creek, I promise you. Or Yamaha's, not Mercury, Yamaha's. That's what you about gotta do anywhere now, you gotta do that to get away from people. Man.
00:21:02
Speaker
Like I said, it was a good hunt. If we'd have been there a little bit earlier, we'd have probably killed a few more. Uh, but good experience. Nobody got hurt. What were you having to maneuver with? You know, uh, didn't you get some good video of a, you know, there was a great video there for a second. Oh yeah.
00:21:25
Speaker
Well, somehow in this big, it's like a big oak, just like any river or a lot of rivers around these parts, it's big oak flats up there. And this thing's cut down, like the bank on the side of this thing's almost straight up about 10 or 12 feet. And somehow in the past when it flooded or something, there's an oak tree that slid off the side of this
00:21:54
Speaker
embankment and landed right dead center of this of this channel and this oak tree is probably 15 foot and dying rich humongous so it just creates a log jam for everything that's coming downstream and we get to that and I mean
00:22:13
Speaker
it was pretty treacherous getting through there. I had to paddle. I was trying to, you know, trying to keep us from wedging up in underneath stuff and pushing us down. I mean, it was wild. Yeah. That video, you come around that bend and look like a naked Viking with that hair down and the beard and sweating. I said, who forgot the chainsaw?
00:22:41
Speaker
Cause that'd have been handy. Oh yeah. Man, that's a, we all got them stories being back in the back, you know, but, but things you'll do for a duck or goose.

Goose Hunt Reflection

00:22:53
Speaker
Yeah. Oh yeah. No, I mean, and kind of go back to that goose hunt. I mean, there was just three of us and, and I checked up early. I hurt my back that morning. Well,
00:23:05
Speaker
I really did Cole. Don't be grinning. I hurt my bag. I couldn't, I couldn't put out another decoy if I wanted to. That's because you're worried about 135. You got no meat on the bones. That, uh, I'll tell you though, by the time we got it set up, three people and, and a really, really good height on that embankment, it just, it worked out good.
00:23:28
Speaker
First back came in and said it set down right in the decoys that were just i mean we took full body snow decoys is the only thing we could get to set up out there and look realistic at all and set it on corn stocks that were frozen sticking up i mean like.
00:23:47
Speaker
And and we ended up with Lord several 21 22 I think I think it was nine specs and then 12 snow geese I think something like that, but I mean if we'd have had the that's probably the the the less blinds and less decoys I've ever put out on the goose and it turned out good, but if we would have had any motion or
00:24:14
Speaker
had our full bodies out or our silhouettes. We could have had a special day because they were staging just right. They were coming off the back roost, headed over to another roost where they held the water open. And then that second roost right there went about 300, 400 yards from us. Yeah, that and all of that worked out perfect. And the roost was right there on our lake. I mean, you can't beat that. What was the wind doing?
00:24:42
Speaker
It was moving good south at about 10, 15. I mean, it was cold. Yeah. I mean, they were flying into the wind towards us. I mean, they were coming from the Northwest. So, I mean, it was, it was, it all worked pretty good. That was the biggest part of it. They were looking for something. I thought some of those mallards that I'd seen would be kind of hitting the fields and we had a few work us, but
00:25:08
Speaker
Nothing, just they know. I mean, you think about it. They know that you get it in a rice field and you bust you a hole. Yeah. Sometimes you kill them, but they know it's frozen. No, it's, it's pretty impressive. Uh, they knew that field was frozen. They couldn't get anything off of it. So I wish you would have been out there drew all that hot air. You usually talk could have dried that warm that field right up.
00:25:34
Speaker
Hey, I'd have been good at busting ice. I'd have been all I'd have been good at, that's for sure. Yeah, the only other time we hunted right over there, it was snowing one time and Drew, he helped me carry out a ton of decoys. Oh, it was a great hunt. That was another banded hunt we had. I mean to tell you, not 15 minutes into the hunt, we start shooting things and Drew's over there just upside down in the water. Just cold, son.
00:26:05
Speaker
I didn't leave, didn't do nothing. I just stayed right there and I called and I called and that's about all I did. The last duck we killed, the last one, the only duck I shot at that morning because I was so cold, was a greenhead mallet that come in. I shoot my three shells and I couldn't help but keep shaking because I was so cold.
00:26:27
Speaker
And all of a sudden you see wit and shoot about 55 yards away from him and dropped that bird and it swam all the way across the other side of that lake there. We went and picked it up and had a band on it. Dang. Cold blooded. Tell you what, it was cold blooded. Is that what I just heard? The cold wet. It almost got away. We turned that hunt, the cold blooded hunt, the shot and the fall.
00:26:56
Speaker
Yeah. I'll tell you what. No, every duck gets away or every goose gets away, you know, that's a band, you know, it's got to be a band. You think about that, like the Coca-Cola band and all those bands that you used to hear about that are million dollar bands and things like that. And you're just like, man, that could have been the Coca-Cola band or, you know, anything like that. I just, it eats you up inside and makes you have nightmares as a hunter, you know. Yeah. I never even heard of that.
00:27:23
Speaker
Yeah, we're more Pepsi brand at the farm our way. Yeah. Didn't they try to give away a fighter jet in that on Netflix right now? Oh yeah. I just got done watching that. That was crazy. What's the name of that? I ain't seen it. I don't remember the name of it, but I just, I didn't know nothing about it. And I seen it like two days before. And anyways, I just had to look on that Netflix. It was there and I watched it, but yeah, that old boy, uh,
00:27:52
Speaker
He had a legit, legit reason, but anyway. You just watched it and you don't know the name of the show. Is that what I just heard? Yeah, I don't know the name of it. I know what the show's about, but I don't know the name. It's one of them points deals or something where you collect all the caps and the points or something, and you could win a fighter jet or something. Hmm.
00:28:18
Speaker
I was just trying to get a free drink with, whenever they used to do that, you know, that was hard enough. I mean, they're going to throw a fighter jet in there. I just want to free 20 ounce. Shoot. Nowadays I get mad at people for telling me there's a survey on the back of my receipt for a extra Big Mac. You got to take them up on it though. I know you're right. I love Big Mac. God, I love Big Mac.
00:28:46
Speaker
Um, uh, you know, so that goose hunt was a blast and that's kind of the, that's about the first time we've got that goose trailer out this year. That was, uh, a disaster. Um, it was, you should have seen this stuff stacked on it from our last snow goose hunt. I mean, it was, it was piled up when it go. Oh yeah. Usually I've, you know,
00:29:14
Speaker
Two weeks before season, you know, I'll have everything ready to go, but I've just been so busy this year. I hadn't, but yeah, yeah, we, we got to find a place to go. So we pull all of it out so we can stack it in. Nice and neat. That's right. We hunting in that conservation hunt this year. Maybe, um, we've done it every year just for fun. So.
00:29:37
Speaker
I mean, I would like to, you know, like I said, we placed pretty good first year. Someone has got a donate for last place, you know? Yeah, no joke. We did get the first year, but we got top five or so, or something like that. I don't remember, but anyways, now we've rounded up the bottom a couple of times too. That's the years we came up about 400 short. Yeah. It was the years you hunted with us.
00:30:05
Speaker
Oh yeah. It was those wet-filled deers. It was cold that one time, man. I was tapped out on E-caller. I was ready to go home. I ain't gonna lie. Oh, it just gets the echo in there too, man. You hear it for a couple days straight.
00:30:28
Speaker
And then you just got to watch all them specs, just right there, just doing it nasty right in your face. And you just can't do nothing about it. Yeah, that's very frustrating. If anybody, if anybody's wondering what a goose hunt is like, y'all need to go on one. It's, uh, it's one of the most love hate sports that I have. I mean, it's.
00:30:54
Speaker
you can see them. There's been multiple times we look at them just in the heavens and they're just falling out for no reason. And then there's other times they'll be cupped up, committed, or you think, and then about that time they'll just bank. I'm gonna just skirt you just a little bit this way and land about 150 yards from you and start a massive feed right there and then you're just
00:31:21
Speaker
Watching them laying there all morning. Oh, yeah. That's when you wish you had a deer rifle, not a shotgun, but yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The goose, uh, the snow goose, uh, hunting is very, uh, love or hate. I think you got to have about eight very bad ones where you go out there and sit out.
00:31:43
Speaker
all the decoys and don't kill nothing. And then that, you know, not, I think I'm on seven. We gotta get that eight, you know? Yeah. We ain't hit that eight yet. Yeah. I can't tell you how many times me and Whit been 200 yards off the mark, you know, and it just doesn't happen. But that's how you learn. Seven for me. I know it going. It's a lot of work, but I enjoy it. Yeah.
00:32:13
Speaker
But when they do it right, there ain't nothing better. There ain't nothing better. I mean, they get down on you. That's what's interesting too, like the dry land hunting, like up north is like what we would love to experience down here because we do a lot of timber and field hunting and you see them guys just going at it up there in the fields. And I love that. I love the aspect of just sitting up amongst the decoys and
00:32:43
Speaker
watching them birds, you know, lighten your face and do their thing that they normally can do. But man, the work, I mean, getting up at three o'clock in the morning, putting out 500 decoys, just to maybe take two birds, you know, it's a love hate, in my opinion. And I enjoy it whenever we do have a good time. And, you know, it's fun.

The Joys and Struggles of Goose Hunting

00:33:06
Speaker
It's a great experience to those who may not have had the chance to do it yet. I highly, highly recommend it.
00:33:14
Speaker
Yeah. My favorite part about the goose hunting is like, we go to this competition hunt and we're, we're trying to shoot 500 birds, you know, like them other boys down South Arkansas. And, uh, everybody's out there, you know, you're supposed to hide a little bit. We're laid out there in them. And we got about three extra cases of shotgun shells out there with those extra shotguns laying around loaded.
00:33:41
Speaker
Like, what do you expect? I mean, a lot of it's kind of self-inflicted Cole. I mean, we've learned a lot from a lot of these failures that we've done. And, and I think the biggest, I mean, like Jake said, I mean, we're hunting these wet fields. We're in the mud. Does a footprint matter? I don't know, but it sure ain't fun hunting them in that stuff at all.
00:34:07
Speaker
Uh, but now lots of times, I mean, we just kind of probably stand out a little bit too much, but, uh, when you do get them, when you're laid down and there's landing on top of you like that, all 800, 200, it's probably only like 50, but it feels like 150, you know, it's awesome. It's really freaking awesome. So, uh, we, we didn't that day, we didn't get to.
00:34:35
Speaker
have any big groups land on us but the the pairs and triples that was that was kind of bringing back some good memories for start of the year we got a lot more left but we're gonna be able to do it oh yeah yeah like i said hopefully uh hopefully we get some good hunting in this uh this next split like i said this is the last time i've done i don't know how long but uh anyways it's all gonna pay for itself so uh but no going back to
00:35:05
Speaker
You know, like that goose, you know, it only takes one time to run. You know, we probably had to, I mean, we've had quite a few good snow goose hunts, but I'll never forget that first one. You know, I mean, when they sit down on you, the only thing I can describe is like shake, you know, if a big buck comes out, but man, it's a, it's a, it's a crazy feeling. Talking about big bucks. Did anybody kill anything good? End of the year.
00:35:35
Speaker
Man, all my deer just disappear, man. I got a herd of does that I've been seeing and might sit on the bow stand one last time. I was meant to check my camera today and see if I had anything, but I checked it a couple of days ago and it was pretty slim. Pretty slim.
00:36:07
Speaker
Yeah, I've been seeing a lot of posts on social media of people having a good opportunity to take some good deer, but I have not been since Whit and I went out to his property and got the opportunity to take those two doe and fill the freezer up and everything.

Deer Hunting Updates

00:36:27
Speaker
But I know that there have been some people, a couple down South have been having some really, really good luck. They've had some pretty good deer. A couple were
00:36:36
Speaker
some of those non-typical that you...
00:36:39
Speaker
Normally we wouldn't see down in that area. You talking Fordyce area or are we talking a goody area? Like south, like, I mean, where the hogs run type deal, you know, it's, uh, it's much like the pine cone eaters as Jacob will bring up. You know, there's a lot of, a lot of pine down in that way, you know, south, southwest Arkansas and Northeast Louisiana, Northwest. Uh, but there's been a few, few that's been harvested pretty good down there.
00:37:09
Speaker
Yeah, I've been seeing some nice ones still come across the internet. So congratulations to them guys. I've kind of just kind of gave up on the deer for a minute, starting to get ready to shoot some more waterfowl and run these dogs, let these hounds run.
00:37:29
Speaker
Yeah, I've been trying, I've been trying to get Arkansas big buck classic post a couple of my buddies, really small deers that they shot this year, but they won't do it without permission. So that's all I've been doing the end of the year here on the deer season. But, uh, you know, we did end up that talk about that waterfowl. We did end up Jake getting in that zero grade field without you. I,
00:37:57
Speaker
I should have waited, but it was a wet field and I know you don't like those. So there's a little water out there. I didn't want you to not enjoy it. I'm just worried about getting over there in that spot now, since that tractor ran off in there and sunk up about five feet. That's about where I stand, I think. I got to tell you though, that morning.
00:38:25
Speaker
I don't think we could have been any later or this organized trying to kill those ducks. I mean, I'll be completely honest. Half of it was my fault. I mean, I didn't even bring, I forgot my waiters at the house. I just completely dropped the ball right there. But if anybody goes duck hunting and you've got, and you're planning on standing on dry ground when you're out there.
00:38:51
Speaker
Do yourself a favor. Forget your waiters one time. You'll never bring them again. Cause man, I didn't have to pick up a single decoy. It was nice. It was so nice. He said he forgot, but it's planned. Yeah. We went one time, we went one time over to Oklahoma. We got almost all the way over there. And, uh, my buddy Kyle's like, Hey,
00:39:17
Speaker
Is coot in the back seat? I said, I don't think so. We left the dog at the house. Uh-uh. Yeah. And we ended up killing a bunch of birds and we got to do a lot of splashing around, getting our own birds. The dog was just laid up at the house on my couch. You only do that once. You only leave the dog at the house once. It was funny. He's like, is coot in the back seat? And I said, no, I don't think so.
00:39:47
Speaker
Sure enough. I think half my buddies don't even like hunting women. They just like hunting with ace. Yeah, there's a reason I call you. I'm fine with that. He's definitely better looking. Oh yeah, the girls like him a lot more. Guarantee that. For obvious reasons. For obvious reasons, right? That's right.
00:40:13
Speaker
No, with that hunt, turned out to be pretty good. We didn't have the Hickory Plains game or any show up or anything. I mean, we got a full hunt out. Finished about 15, 8.30. That was a good time. That was a lot of fun. Well, them shovelers were doing it right. I'm talking about they'd lock up a mile up. I mean, you can see the beaks, you know, that rudder sticking up. They'd be down here in about two seconds.
00:40:42
Speaker
When I scouted that field, I could have sworn it was a field full of pintails, Jake. I swear. But it was the afternoon before, you know? So when I get home from work, there might, there might be a whiskey drink or something happened, you know? And I got out there with a pair of binoculars. I could have sworn, sworn it was a full field of pintails.
00:41:05
Speaker
Well, I'd have believed it because me and John, uh, had the pen tails all over slash here. I mean, in all honesty, I, I'm the same way. I don't know. They've been in there thick. Heck, uh, yeah, we, it goes, man, I don't know where the pen tails are. I've seen a bunch of them. He got the thing. He goes, man. I think all these junglers were the pen tails. I was looking at it. Oh, it was hilarious. It was hilarious. And, uh, but now we had a good hunt. We killed a what?
00:41:34
Speaker
16, 18, 20 mallards. I can't remember. Anyways. And, uh, yeah, well, kill some shovelers killed some, uh, it sounds better if you say we killed 28. I mean, that just sounds better, but it was a little mixed bag, which makes it more fun. I mean, I'll be the first one to say that in the past, I'd be like, don't shoot. We got mallards working, but nowadays, man, let's just, we're having fun. There's ducks. They can only count the mallards only got the mallards. Okay.
00:42:18
Speaker
waste pond or what it is, it's out there east of town, a little ways. I was checking a well over the other day and I looked, I was like, man, look at there. And then just shovel or city dude, that came around and they just blew that pond up. Almost set up on them just for the hell of it. They got down the other day. I mean, it's something, you know, something to see.
00:42:30
Speaker
I'll get back to right, my bad.
00:42:48
Speaker
I ain't scared of them. I don't know if, uh, if there's any listeners out there that can tell me what kind of call they make, but I was trying everything I had in my artillery and it was not working. It was, uh, we had to go turn the spoons ill on, just try to get them in. Uh, I forgot about those. No golden grill, baby. I swear we had one and it, and its wings would only spin every once in a while. So you'd have to run out there and click it on.
00:43:18
Speaker
It was halfway. And they do come with two gold teeth in the front, man. That's just as good as gold. And you didn't charge the battery, so that even helps it even better. That's right. I mean, me and Drew gets over there on his place and we show up ready to shoot Mallards. God, it's back on her little.
00:43:45
Speaker
Ah, we were going to shoot a bunch of mallards. I bring my border collie. He was going to fetch them for us and we get out there. All we do all morning is shoot wood ducks. I don't even know how many we shot or if we got over lemon on them. I don't know what the limit is on those. Does anybody know? I think you can kill six birds a person. I ain't trying to incriminate myself, but.
00:44:09
Speaker
It was several years ago, probably 10 plus. I mean, probably before that role was real. Yeah. I mean, that was back when Mojo's got, uh, banned. You couldn't use Mojo's anywhere in the state of Arkansas. Uh, so if that tells you how long ago that was, but I, you know, I've got to make an argument here. I really think that a Drake Woody has to be one of the prettiest birds.
00:44:35
Speaker
that are out there. I mean, along with the greenhead, I'm not saying that they're better than one or the other, but in my opinion, man, those Drake Woodies are beautiful ducks. They're not bad. No, they ain't bad. I like a big old bull pen tell myself.
00:44:55
Speaker
I thought that's all that was on that field. I swear to God. I mean, if, if you ain't ever hunted on a, uh, uh, turn row in the center of two zero grades before with water on both sides and watch these birds do circles, man, I bet you we about, Oh, were you dizzy out

Duck Hunt Reflections

00:45:19
Speaker
there? Co
00:45:21
Speaker
Yeah, because, yeah, we are still unprepared. You know, the night before, uh, I told bit to make sure he brought some seats and then, uh, yeah. Yeah. And waiters and he forgot both. So, um,
00:45:38
Speaker
Yeah. So I was sitting there, you know, we didn't have nothing to sit on. So we're squatting down and then it's just like, you know, let's say front side. Well, which was the front side, you know, the rice field or beans field, you know, because half the blind was facing south, the other half was facing north. And I'm sorry, east and west. And anyways, it got pretty comical. It's a right. We finally got to cold down rice field or bean field. That way we could turn. But I know there's a rut in the levee. You're going to fill it up with.
00:46:09
Speaker
Uh, talking about pretty birds, some buddies of mine, they killed a hybrid Mallard Pentel, uh, this morning, I think is what it was. Is that what they decided that was? I'm pretty sure. Yeah. That was a beautiful bird. I've only seen one other one. And, uh, it's been about five years ago. They killed it up in, uh, Missouri somewhere up there.
00:46:37
Speaker
I think we're going to have to post that one on the Little Woods page. Anybody listening? If you see that on the Facebook, go find us on Facebook, Little Woods Outdoors. We'll post a picture of that. That was a beautiful bird. If they're good with that, Jake. Yeah, I'll talk to them. It's a cool deal. I wonder how often that happens. I mean, you don't see many of them shot, but I wonder like how many of them out there just
00:47:05
Speaker
cruising around that are like that, you never notice. Hey, I got a viewer, he's calling in right now. He's wanting to know that pin location to that hybrid. I don't even have that. It was probably in Oklahoma, that's as far as I know. Asking for a friend, right? Yeah. Asking for a friend. Oh, Lord of mercy. That's good. But no, I mean, we,
00:47:36
Speaker
You know, you give us a week and, uh, several different opportunities go chase them around. I mean,
00:47:43
Speaker
Uh, at the end of the day, just kind of where we started, we're just blessed to get to do this and, and thankful for, uh, the opportunities, good friends. I mean, you get to say, Jake, if you were closer, you'd have been out there. Drew, if you didn't come up with something to do other than hunt with your buddies, you'd have been out there. I think it was work. Maybe you're working. I think you are. Yeah. But.
00:48:10
Speaker
Nah, we had a blast. I think we're gonna go chase them around a little bit in the morning if it's not pouring down rain, so stay tuned. I think I gotta take my dad in the morning, Cole. I'm kinda nervous, so. Uh-oh, where y'all going, zero grade? I think we're gonna try it, yeah. If people ever hear of us,
00:48:36
Speaker
mentioning the Hickory Plains game warden. That's, that's reference to my father. Uh, he's, he's, he's raised four kids, three of them being boys and, and we've hunted our whole lives and, and, uh, there was no need for a game warden to come check our land. He, he did a pretty good job of that as we grew up. He took care of it, huh, Jake? Oh yeah.
00:49:03
Speaker
He kept us legal. So in all honesty, there ain't no way you'd do something illegal because not only would you have a fine or lose your gun, you get back to the house, he'd eat you up, spit you out. So we quit doing that kind of stuff.
00:49:24
Speaker
Yeah. He's always out there checking on us. I mean, that's good though. That's good. He loves it. Hopefully we can get him on something in the morning. He hasn't been very many times. So, uh, but Drew Cole, Jake, I enjoyed it brothers. I think, you know, as a little round table discussion, that's pretty good place to start tonight. And hopefully, you know, this being the first of the year, January one, I mean,
00:49:52
Speaker
I, before I go, anybody got any kind of new year's resolutions? I know it's kind of a little bit lame, but it doesn't have to be podcast related, but anything y'all y'all planning on getting done this year.
00:50:10
Speaker
Hit me up. I'll, uh, I'll start. I got to get this, uh, boy here in a couple of weeks, get him out and, uh, make sure he's good and healthy and just dig him out. Well, I'm going to let the professionals take care of that. Uh, just my goal is to spend more time in the woods of my dogs. That's what I want to do. That's going to be a good one.
00:50:41
Speaker
And that's my exercise, that's my gym. You know, I'm not gonna go to the gym and start lifting weights out of nowhere. I'll go walk four or five miles through the woods and I already had a tick on me tonight, got 70 degrees and the ticks are out again. So that's my resolution, just healthy baby and family and hunting dogs.

Hunting Resolutions for the New Year

00:51:04
Speaker
And coon hounds, baby. Yep. About you, Drew. Yeah, I think
00:51:10
Speaker
I'm going to try to do as much hunting as I can. I know there's been past few years that I've had things come up and I feel like I'm at a position now where I'm just going to go. I'm not going to, you know, let any excuses get in my way to try to hunt with my dad and you guys. And I think that's kind of my goal. My dad's kind of getting up there and.
00:51:33
Speaker
We're getting to the point now where we're old enough where we can go with him and enjoy, you know, some of the things that he taught me. So that's kind of my goal. I'm going to go and I'm going to keep going. I'm going to try to do as many turn counts as I can this year and hit up a few different states with you guys, and I'm looking forward to that. That's right. What you think, Cole? You got a good one? I know you do. Look at that face.
00:52:04
Speaker
Man, tell us about that seed. I know it's going to bump. Yeah, we started a new venture. You know, I'm selling seed and that's about as bad as saying I'm an insurance agent. Anyways, we ain't going to go there. Really just taking my boy and I need to get these girls out there, but really just
00:52:30
Speaker
Taking Sam, he's a, he's a no brainer now. He goes with me every time I go. And, uh, how I think he's about eight up with it as I am. He shot, he's probably shot all the ducks of the day. You know, I had to, I had to race guide them. He thought we had to throw them on the ground and finish them off, you know, but, uh, you know, I guess that's it, you know, just spending more time with them and, uh, get them in the outdoors, man. That's awesome, man. Yeah. No, I.
00:52:56
Speaker
And, and goals for the new year. I mean, as lame as it is, I, uh, I don't have a specific animal I want to kill either. But if I get to go on two or three hunting troops, I'll be happy. I, uh, I think Turkey's in Arkansas. I've, I've killed 10 turkeys in my life and I haven't killed a single Turkey in Arkansas. And this is going to be the year. That's my, that's my new year's resolution. I'm going to kill one. That's a good one.
00:53:27
Speaker
That one last year got away from it legally. I told you I got the game warden in town. We do it legally, but that's going to be kind of a goal for me. Obviously, the basic ones, spend time with family, enjoy it, probably try to get a couple of gold camos for Call of Duty for a couple of guns.
00:53:56
Speaker
Now, all jokes aside, I think it's gonna be a great year. I hope everybody out there listening has a terrific start to their year. Plenty of fortune. Don't wash clothes today. I heard that's bad luck. You ain't gotta worry about me. I'm not gonna be washing clothes. But in all honesty, thanks again for listening. Thanks, Jake, Cole, Drew, taking out an hour of your day.
00:54:25
Speaker
Awesome, and hopefully we round out episode three here slash episode two and see if we can't get this started next. What day we gonna do this next? We gotta go ahead and say it, put it in writing.

Future of the Podcast

00:54:41
Speaker
What day we doing this next? Cause I know Cole, he's tied up lots of time, so. It'll be next Sunday, saying I like doing it on these Sundays. You like it Sundays? I think so. That'll be perfect.
00:54:55
Speaker
Well, we'll see if we can get T-Bird back on the mic. A couple of my brothers, we'll have it live. So I know my brother's been straight up killing some ducks. So we've got plenty of stories there, but. Oh yeah. Anybody got anything else to say? All right. Enjoyed it, Phil. I enjoyed the heck out of it. Thanks for listening, Little Woods Outdoors. Go find us on Facebook. Thank y'all.
