Understanding Wabi-Sabi in Pottery

00:00:35
Speaker
What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about why you should be practicing wabi-sabi with your pottery to help you grow and find your voice.
00:00:48
Speaker
For those that don't know what wabi-sabi is, wabi-sabi is the art of practicing imperfection with your pottery. It's a Japanese term to practice imperfection.
00:01:03
Speaker
And I just recently had a very great conversation with Emily Adams, and she contributes her growth as an artist to practicing wabi saphi. And she went on to saying that because she practices being imperfect and, you know, being grateful for what she is making, she says that that has helped her tremendously with growing as an artist and with being able to enjoy the process a lot more.

Embracing Imperfections for Growth

And I'm gonna encourage you to also practice wabi-sabi with your product because in pottery, as many of you know, that nothing can be perfect all the time. You can probably have a good piece maybe about every four out of 10 times and then every, the rest of the six out of 10 times, it's either not gonna turn out how you want or it's gonna turn out completely different or it's gonna be complete crap, right? And that's why it's important to practice wabi-sabi.
00:01:58
Speaker
It's important to practice not being perfect with your pottery because we don't need our pottery to be perfect all the time. We don't need it to be perfect all the time because if it's perfect all the time, then what happens is we're not growing our pottery, we're not growing our skills, we're getting stagnant because everything is staying perfect. Perfect is only good on paper, in math, right?
00:02:25
Speaker
you can never be truly perfect at anything so it's important to practice wabi-sabi and embrace these imperfections that you have with your pottery so maybe you are making something right now and every single time you are making it right now it's just not turning out how you want it and there's a bunch of imperfections what if you start embracing those imperfections
00:02:44
Speaker
and start learning from them and start embracing them, what do you think that would do to your own pottery? And what do you think that would do to you growing as an artist? Because we're going to have days when we're going to be we're going to be on it. We're going to have everything is going to go right for us. But also, there's going to be those days when we're going to be complete crap. Everything is going to pretty much kind of turn to crap. Everything is not going to be perfect.
00:03:11
Speaker
And those are the days when we really have to practice wabi-sabi. We have to practice this because if we can get better at accepting these imperfections, then we can start coming up with new ideas on how to incorporate them into our own pottery.
00:03:27
Speaker
So that's why I believe it is truly important for us to practice wabi sabhi. If you can start practicing wabi sabhi right now, today, then your pottery is going to go a lot further and your voice is going to go a lot further because you are accepting these imperfections and you are accepting things and you're going to start learning more things and you're going to start enjoying the process a lot more.
00:03:47
Speaker
So go out there and start embracing wabi-sabi. Remember, embrace imperfections and embrace the process. That's how your pottery is going to grow and that's how you will find your voice.
00:03:59
