What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here.

Reflecting on Past Work to Enhance Skills

00:00:16
Speaker
And in this episode of Shaping in Pottery, I am going to be talking about reflecting on your pottery and the pieces that you are currently making or have made in the past. I had a really great conversation with Lindy Diehl.

Lindy's Approach to Finding Her Pottery Voice

00:00:29
Speaker
And one of the things that Lindy does to help her improve her pottery and improve her voice and make it go even further and further is that she is constantly reflecting on her work, on herself, on her report.
00:00:43
Speaker
she's just a really reflecting person she likes to reflect on things and one of the things that she does that is really really helpful in my opinion is that she won't sell all of her pottery that she makes instead what she does is that she sits down with her pottery
00:01:06
Speaker
And she uses it. She uses it and she reflects on it. And she tries to look at things in different light and sees where where things can improve or where things that she really likes. And she does that by simply just keeping some pottery, some mugs, maybe.

The Value of Keeping Personal Pottery Pieces

00:01:25
Speaker
And that's all she does is she she just keeps a one or two mugs and that's it.
00:01:31
Speaker
And this is so, so crucial when you are reflecting on your pottery. And this is a really great tip that she does. Instead of making every single piece for your pottery that you want to sell and trying to sell it, try keeping one or two just for yourself. You don't have to keep it forever, but just keep one or two for this go around.
00:02:00
Speaker
and really reflect on it use it you put coffee in it put flowers in it whatever you make and really use it look at it do things that you can do to reflect on it because what happens when you start reflecting on your pottery
00:02:16
Speaker
You start coming up with new ideas. You start coming up with ideas that maybe you want to keep or maybe ideas that can help you improve this pottery. Like Lindy gave the example of how with one of her recent mugs that she kept is that
00:02:33
Speaker
The handle was alright, but it could always be better, and she was thinking about new ways on how to make her handle better so that she is being able to improve her pottery.

Growth Through Reflection on Pottery

00:02:44
Speaker
And this is so, so crucial, and I hope you guys start doing this. Don't sell every single piece of your pottery. Keep one or two, and start reflecting on it. Even if you aren't using it,
00:02:56
Speaker
like how Lindy is saying if you were just looking at it and maybe looking at little little little details here and there like let's say the rim or the handles or the foot ring if you make a foot ring and just start looking at those little details and you're trying to figure out ways to improve it just a little bit then your pottery is going to go so much further rather than if you sell everything and you don't look at your pottery or use it
00:03:23
Speaker
So you have to get in the habit of really reflecting on your pottery. You can also reflect not on just your current pieces of pottery, but you can also reflect on your past pottery as well. When you're able to reflect on your past pottery, you learn a lot as well because
00:03:39
Speaker
you can see how much you have grown. You also get ideas that you totally maybe have forgot about because you just reflect on old pieces of pottery. Maybe you tried something like when you were really new to pottery and maybe at the time you didn't really like it, but now since you're reflecting back on your work and you look at it, you like what you did there and try to incorporate back into your pottery.
00:04:07
Speaker
If you could just take the time to reflect on your pottery, on yourself, on what you like to make, your voice is going to go a lot further and it's going to be there a lot quicker if you are reflecting on your pottery.
00:04:20
Speaker
I hope this episode brought you some value and I'll see you guys next time.
