With Mateo Retegui banging in goals for Atalanta and Italy, and Marcus Thuram not as prolific after Christmas, questions are raised if Inter Milan should cash in on the Frenchman in the summer, and replace him with the Azzurri striker.

The Italian Football Podcast patron Matthew P send in questions wondering what Nima Tavallaey and guest co-host Patrick Kendrick think about Retegui at Inter.

Moise Kean as a Replacement for Marcus Thuram

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to pay the release clause ah marcus toam leave inta what do you think of moys ken being a good replacement now it's hilarious that you're here for this question patrick given i know how much you like mos can But ah he continues, apparently he also has a release clause with which is significant like significantly lower than Turan, so Inter would be able to strike a dealer, maybe even have some cashhe cash left to buy a defender or beef up the proposal for Ricci.

Vlahovic's Fit in Inzaghi's System

00:00:38
Speaker
One other maybe silly idea, but an interesting thought experiment. Vlahovic or Inter, how would he fit in his Agi system? He would have much different duties than in Motas 4231 and a strike partner up front.

Inter's Strategy: Selling and Buying Players

00:00:50
Speaker
My position is, if you get 85, 90 million for Marcus Duran, you send Christiana Slani plus whatever cash you need to get Ricci from Torino, you sell Fratezi to Roma, you already got Peter Suchich coming in, and you bring in Mateo Retegi next to Lautaro Martinez. That's my immediate reaction to that, more than anything.

Retegui's Potential Impact at Inter

00:01:12
Speaker
Because I think what Retegi has shown this season, more than just being a killer in the box, I think he's become this kind of like the complete number nine, a prima punta in every essence of the word, who plays well in a big club in the sense that his movement off the ball, his link up play, his ability to put others into play, his aerial a ability, pressing all of those things have really impressed me. would you like What do you think?
00:01:38
Speaker
I like the ambition to to recruit Rotegi for Inter. I think that would be slightly concerning for Inter's rivals if they were to to recruit Rotegi to play alongside Lautado Martinez, because Lautado's almost become an Italian Argentine, hasn't he? Because he's played the bulk of his senior career here. Rotegi is Argentine, but plays for the Italian national team, so they're going to have that understanding as well. And as you said, I think Rotegi has shown that he can play with all sorts of different team-mates, you know, Atalanta sometimes play with two tens and one striker, sometimes one ten and two strikers, so and he can link up with Lukman into Quetzalaro.

Thuram's Decline and Selling Strategy

00:02:12
Speaker
We've seen that with Sam Archit, so anyone who plays alongside Lábzaro Martinez is going to get opportunities and give him chances as well. So, yeah, I don't know where we're at with Taram. I wonder whether
00:02:24
Speaker
They almost would have been better off selling him. It's just going to sound like a ludicrous notion, but almost would have been better selling him in January at this stage because his form has really fallen off. You know, he was so prolific in the first portion of the season. Then he got injured last night when recording after the game between Furentina.

Vlahovic's Career and League Change

00:02:40
Speaker
And, you know, he's now being outshone by Laotada, which is, you know,
00:02:45
Speaker
if you're going to be outshone by someone, it may as well be Inter's captain, their best player last season's, Capo Canonere as well. But I wonder now, you know, you're much more party to this than I am, Lima, I wonder about what Oaktree's plans are and where the all of the parameters lie with regards to new recruits. Certainly Ritchie seems to fall into that. I think Moisa Ken from memory is a 2000, so he's turning 25 this year. So that's a good age as well. But yeah, I mean, just coming to the last part of the question, I don't really see Vlahovic.
00:03:18
Speaker
going to another Italian club now and necessarily being successful, I think he needs to move on and move away from Italy.

Retegui and Lautaro Partnership Potential

00:03:23
Speaker
you know Had Fiorentina, he's had Juventus, it's clearly not worked out at Juventus for that big fee and I think he'd be best off going elsewhere. But the way that Simoni and Zaghi has coached Inter over the last three and a half seasons, if anyone is to get the best out of Lajovic, it could well be him.
00:03:39
Speaker
That's exactly how I view the Blavid situation as well, because I think he just needs a change of scenery, to be honest. um A different league ah to find this kind of like, re-re-re-reinvigor his career, almost, refresh it. But yeah, like you said, you know, we've seen Inzagi rehabilitate players before.
00:04:00
Speaker
um But yeah, now personally, I'd retagie and Lautaro for me would be just crazy. But as Carlos said on Monday, we are reaching the stage where I take his price tag is reaching you've given the amount of goals and Atlanta's ability to sell players. We're reaching a stage where Italian clubs probably might not be able to afford him.
00:04:22
Speaker
I agree. I mean, look at how much Heulen went for. Admittedly Heulen much younger than Rick Tegi, but yeah, I mean, he's proving it and we'll see whether he can increase his output in the Champions League with the with the knockout stages starting this week. Indeed.
