#207 Star Wars and Pottery: Unveiling the Art of Self-Expression

E207 · Shaping Your Pottery with Nic Torres

In this podcast episode, host Nic Torres draws parallels between his two passions: Star Wars and pottery. He reflects on his love for Star Wars, particularly the different forms of Jedi combat, and connects it to his pottery practice. Nic argues that, just like Jedi combat styles, pottery can be a unique form of self-expression. He encourages listeners to find their unique voice in their art by intertwining their passions and interests. For example, if a listener resonates with Obi-Wan Kenobi's defensive combat form or Anakin Skywalker's attack-based form, they could translate that into their pottery style. He emphasizes that making pottery should be about personal expression and satisfaction before anything else. He concludes by reminding listeners to keep creating and shaping, as their unique pottery voice will eventually emerge.

What is up, Shaper Nation? This is Nick Torres here. For those that don't know me, my name is Nick Torres, and I have a mission to help as many potters as I can to find their own unique style with their potter. In this episode, I'm going to be talking a lot about Star Wars, so I hope you guys enjoy it.

Star Wars is one of those things that I just absolutely love. I love watching Star Wars. One of my favorite memories from watching Star Wars was literally watching it with my sister, like literally during COVID. She was staying at my house for like almost a year and a half. And we literally watched all the Star Wars movies and we were just talking about Star Wars all the time. And that's one of my favorite memories with her is watching Star Wars.
00:01:37
Speaker
And because we got really into Star Wars, I started looking at the lore of Star Wars, you know, some like things that people might not know because I just wanted to dive

Star Wars Inspirations in Pottery

deeper. I just wanted to learn more about Star Wars because there's the actual movies and then it goes deeper into what it is. And so I wanted to learn the lore of Star Wars. And during my research and like going on YouTube and learning all these stories about Star Wars,
00:02:05
Speaker
I learned that the Jedi use different forms for their lightsabers and how they fight with their lightsabers. You know, for example, Obi-Wan Kenobi, the goat, he uses form three, which is basically a defensive form. And then Anakin Skywalker, he uses form five, which is an attack-based form. But why am I telling you about the forms of Jedi?
00:02:35
Speaker
Well, that's because the forms of Jedi are the way they communicate how they fight. You know, some Jedi want to be more defensive. They don't want to be attacked first, but some want to be attacked first. And that's more leading them into the dark side, which is more why Jedi tend to stay away from that. But I'm telling you this because those forms are like your pottery, your pottery.
00:03:04
Speaker
And everything you do has a unique way to communicate your own pottery voice. Everything you do, you don't have to be the same as everybody else. You can communicate your pottery the best you see fit for yourself. If you wanna go out there and start making flower pottery, go communicate that voice to people. Go communicate that because when you start doing that,
00:03:31
Speaker
That's when your voice is gonna start truly showing up. You're making for yourself first and you're expressing yourself through your pottery and the ways you are making pottery because you are simply just doing things that excite you and you are leaning more into those interests. And it's just like the forms in Star Wars and how the Jedi use their forms, they have all these different forms, but they all get the job done, right?
00:03:59
Speaker
Whatever they're doing, whether they're trying to attack the droids or save the Empire, the Jedi are getting the job done with their lightsabers and their forms and their force powers.

Personal Fulfillment in Pottery Creations

00:04:13
Speaker
It's the same thing with your pottery.
00:04:15
Speaker
Whatever you are making right now, that is how you are communicating your voice, but it's better to make for yourself and make the things that you wanna make, because that's how you are truly expressing your pottery voice. There are many different ways you can do that. You can even combine many different things all at once as well.
00:04:36
Speaker
You don't have to be the same thing as everybody else because in this pottery space, it's very crowded. A lot of things have probably already been done, but that doesn't mean you don't have to stop doing those things.
00:04:52
Speaker
If you enjoy doing those things like maybe you like glazing you like seeing the way glazes look you Want it to be simple great keep doing those things because that's your voice that you want to communicate with maybe if you don't like glazing, but you want your party to start looking a little bit different and You maybe let's say you are a nerd of Star Wars and you like Star Wars as well. I
00:05:16
Speaker
How can you add those things that you like outside of pottery and put it into your pottery? There's literally somebody I've seen on Instagram that literally makes Star Wars themed mugs and they're absolutely insane. And you guys can be doing the same thing with all of your interests as well. Just go out there and start adding your interests into your pottery because there are many different ways to communicate your voice and only you can do that. Nobody else can do that for you. Only you can do that.
00:05:46
Speaker
but you have to start doing the things that interest you and adding those things into your pottery.

Engaging with the Pottery Community

00:05:52
Speaker
Don't listen to anybody else, listen to yourself about how you wanna communicate your own pottery voice. Again, I'm a huge nerd and I love Star Wars and that's how Star Wars can help you with finding your own unique voice. Remember, you're just one pot away from finding your own unique voice, so keep on making, keep on making. You will find it eventually. See you guys next time.
