Navigating Ocean City: Tips and Strategies

00:02:12
Speaker
Today we're heading to Ocean City, New Jersey, a classic Jersey shore town that can actually work really well for families who need a trip to be a little bit more predictable and manageable.
00:02:22
Speaker
It's great for that old-fashioned East Coast summer beach vacation, but today we'll tackle it with a strategy for modern times for all families. Ocean City sits on the Southern New Jersey Post and is known for being very family-focused.
00:02:37
Speaker
clean, easy to get around, and most things are within a short drive or bike ride. For kids with ADHD, autism, anxiety, that kind of structure and familiarity can make a big difference.
00:02:51
Speaker
Okay, so let's jump into our three places to visit in Ocean City, New Jersey. We're going to start kind of strong here, guys. We're going to start with the Ocean City Boardwalk, but with a strategy.
00:03:03
Speaker
The Ocean City Boardwalk is probably the first thing that most people think of when they think of Ocean City, New Jersey. And while it can definitely be busy and potentially overwhelming, it can still work well for families if you go in with a strategy.
00:03:18
Speaker
Going early in the morning or maybe later in the evening before the nighttime crowd can make a big difference, especially for kids who get overwhelmed with crowds, noise, or long waits.
00:03:31
Speaker
Plan ahead and take things slow. You don't have to do everything at once. Remember what we say here at the show, don't leave fun for fun. We usually pick just one or two things to do when we go to the boardwalk and then take a break.
00:03:44
Speaker
This part really has to be planned ahead of time with boundaries set ahead of time because there are so many options and choices. The boardwalk itself is wide and easy to walk, which helps if your child needs movement or space to reset.
00:04:00
Speaker
Approaching it in smaller pieces instead of trying to do everything in one visit can make the experience much more manageable, both for you and your child. It's a nice place to take a walk with a stroller if you're trying to get a child down for a nap or to sleep while you're still out enjoying time with your family.
00:04:16
Speaker
You definitely want to be mindful of bikes when you're on the boardwalk and guide your kids to stay in the appropriate areas when bikes are primarily being used. Our second place to visit in Ocean City, New Jersey is Corson's Inlet State Park.
00:04:30
Speaker
If you need a quieter break from the boardwalk, a great spot nearby is this state park. It's at the very south end of the island. This area feels a little bit more like a break in nature than a typical beach town, but it's a nice balance from the boardwalk and the sometimes crowded beaches.
00:04:49
Speaker
There are walking paths, open spaces, fewer crowds, which can really be helpful for kids who get overstimulated easily or need that movement break. Swimming is not allowed here, so this really isn't your beach day spot, but it's a great place to walk, explore, and reset when everyone needs a break from the noise and activity that can be hectic in the summertime in Ocean City.
00:05:13
Speaker
It's also great if anyone in your group likes fishing. We have some fishing lovers in our crew, and this is a nice option for catching some kingfish, bluefish, and our personal favorite weak fish.
00:05:24
Speaker
Make sure to check out the New Jersey Parks and Forest website to get your permit ahead of time. Having a calmer option like Corson's Inlet State Park built into a trip like Ocean City can make the whole vacation go more smoothly.
00:05:37
Speaker
So I definitely suggest it. The third thing on our list is something to do or like a place to visit is beach time. And this is beach time again with a strategy. Pick a calmer entrance and a good time of day to go.
00:05:52
Speaker
So one thing that makes a big difference in Ocean City is where you go to the beach. The areas closest to the boardwalk can get crowded and loud, especially in the middle of the day. So if your child does better with more space, less noise, try heading toward the south end of the island around 50th Street and higher.
00:06:10
Speaker
Those beaches tend to be quieter, a little more family focused, a little less overwhelming. Sometimes just choosing a calmer beach entrance can make a difference between a stressful day and a really enjoyable one for your family.
00:06:22
Speaker
Picking an earlier time is also a good strategy. It also helps to keep your routine consistent, using the same beach entrance each day, going around the same time, and keeping expectations predictable for your children.
00:06:35
Speaker
For many kids with ADHD, autism, or anxiety, that familiarity makes travel feel safer. One small safety tip when you're traveling near the water in Ocean City is to choose bright colored swimsuits for your kids.
00:06:48
Speaker
Colors like neon orange or yellow are much easier to see in the ocean.

Dining in Ocean City: Unique and Stress-free Experiences

00:06:53
Speaker
Okay, so now that we've done our three places to visit in Ocean City, let's tackle two places to eat for families.
00:07:00
Speaker
The first one, i love this idea, and I'm looking forward to doing this on our next trip to Ocean City. It's something we haven't tried yet, but we're going to try it this summer at one of our other beach destinations, and I think it's a great idea.
00:07:14
Speaker
It's a catered seafood boil or take-home dinner. It works really well in a place like Ocean City, especially if you're staying in a rental. Several local seafood markets offer prepared meals that you can bring back to the house, and some companies like Outer Banks Boil Company provide the full-service catering.
00:07:31
Speaker
They handle everything from setup to cleaning up. This is something that's nice to do as a one-time treat combination activity. So it's like a fun way to eat, but also a big nighttime activity to look forward to for the kids.
00:07:46
Speaker
For families traveling with kids who may get overwhelmed in restaurants, this can really be a nice alternative to get the experience of eating something novel, doing something fun and memorable without having to endure the difficulty of eating out.
00:08:00
Speaker
You can eat at your own pace, keep the environment familiar for your children, and avoid long waits or noisy dining rooms that can sometimes be overstimulating. Sometimes the best travel tip isn't finding the best restaurant.
00:08:12
Speaker
It's finding a way to make meals easier for your children and your family and meet them where they are. Our second thing to try for food or place to try for food is John and Patty's Coffee Bar and Bistro.
00:08:24
Speaker
We love this spot. It's a great breakfast or lunch spot on Asbury Avenue, which is a bit off the boardwalk area. Feels a little calmer than your typical boardwalk restaurant.
00:08:34
Speaker
Casual, family friendly, and a nice way to start the day before things get crowded. Starting the day slowly can really help kids who need time to adjust before jumping into a busy environment.
00:08:45
Speaker
The latte bar is also great for parents. Highly recommend a seasonal or yummy latte. I love the salted caramel. Okay, so finally, our one great tip for families for Ocean City.

Balancing Routine and Flexibility in Travel

00:09:00
Speaker
Our tip for Ocean City, New Jersey is to plan your days with both a little bit of routine, but also some flexibility. Try using the same beach entrance, going to the same boardwalk spot at the same time each day, or keeping meals predictable.
00:09:16
Speaker
Kids with ADHD, autism, or anxiety often do better when the day feels familiar, even when you're somewhere new. And especially somewhere like Ocean City, can be a little bit overstimulating at times, especially during the hectic summer season.
00:09:31
Speaker
That being said, it also helps to have a backup plan and to be flexible on a trip like this. The weather can change, the crowds can change, Kids' moods can change, and knowing you have another option like quieter beach, a walk, or an indoor break can make the whole trip go more smoothly.
00:09:49
Speaker
Not every day has to be a full day, and building in downtime can make the fun parts go better. So in closing, travel doesn't have to look like anyone else's version to be meaningful.
00:09:59
Speaker
Meet your family where they are, adjust when needed, and keep wandering without limits. You got this. If this episode resonated with you, please follow or subscribe to the show and share it with another parent who might also benefit.
