The Importance of Unlearning in Pottery

What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. In this episode of Shaping and Pottery, I'm going to be talking about unlearning stuff in order to start learning again and why it's important to help you discover your own unique voice. You see, sometimes when we're in school or if we have learned something before, we think that is the only way about going about it sometimes. And so we keep on doing this same thing over and over and over again. But

We're still getting lousy results, I guess, not the results that we would want.
Challenging Old Methods and Trying New Techniques

So here's my question to you. What if instead of doing the same thing over and over again, it's still getting not the results that you want? What if you tried to unlearn something so that you can start learning again? Imagine what that could do to your pottery. Imagine you have a certain technique that you've been let's say you you are throwing on the wheel and for ages
00:01:32
Speaker
you have thrown the exact same way because that's what you were taught to throw and how you centered. Now imagine if you just unlearn that for a second and you tried something else you tried to learn something else and imagine what that would do to your wheel throwing. Here's what I think it would do to your wheel throwing because I have experienced this

I used to throw the way my first ceramics teacher taught me. It was just to use a sponge and you're about to snap your fingers. And so I tried that, but it didn't really work for me. And so I went on to other throwing methods.

I eventually found one where I just used my knuckle and a sponge and that one helped me significantly more than just the snapping motion. And I think that if you're able to actually get out of what you actually know and start to think in ways of how can I unlearn this and what new skills can I learn or what new skills can I try in order to make this easier for myself or make it look better.
00:02:34
Speaker
You have to be able to unlearn these things sometimes because when we are in that state of, oh, I know this already, I don't have to know anymore because I already know it and I can do this
Ego, Experimentation, and Finding Your Voice

Speaker
already. Now what happens is you get stagnant and you're not actually growing at all. So you aren't actually being able to push your pottery further. You're not being able to make something easier. You're not able to find your voice because you think you know it all.
00:03:02
Speaker
So you have to be in that learning mindset and sometimes you have to learn the things that you have learned in order to get that mindset. I think you should be always trying to experiment with ways to make pottery easier for yourself, make your pottery look even better and just keep on trying to experiment with these things.

But that's not gonna come if you are too, you have a big ego about it and you think, oh, this is the only way I can do it and there's no other way. You have to learn these things sometimes in order to pursue your pottery further so that you can grow as a potter, find your voice and make things that just look really, really cool to you and look absolutely amazing and stand out from the crowd.
