The Journey to Finding Your Pottery Voice

00:00:16
Speaker
And in this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about working just a little bit longer in order to find your voice. You see, I had a really great conversation with Anthony Romero.
00:00:29
Speaker
And I asked him the question, what advice would you give to someone trying to find their own unique voice with their pottery? And in this he answered, you have to work just a little bit longer, just a little bit longer and then you're going to be able to find your voice. And that is so true because sometimes

Persistence and Skill Development

00:00:50
Speaker
some people may find their voice a lot faster because they kind of know what they want their pottery to look like they want they know what exactly how their pottery should look like and that's what they are pursuing but for most of us
00:01:03
Speaker
We don't know what we want our pottery to pursue. We don't know what we like a lot of the times. So we have to keep on making things, and we have to keep on getting better, hone our craft, and think about what we are trying to make. And sometimes that takes a long time. But if you give up before you even are able to find your voice, to find your own style,
00:01:31
Speaker
then you're never gonna be able to find your own style. And all it takes is sometimes going a little bit longer, making pottery a little bit longer than you plan to.

Natural Progression in Craft

00:01:42
Speaker
If you want to quit, maybe try not to quit and just keep on pursuing it, keep on going. Because I promise you, while you may not have found your voice or your style yet, if you keep on going, it will almost naturally fall into your lap
00:02:01
Speaker
just by simply trying to hone your craft improve your craft and find out ways that things that you like to make if you just keep on doing those things you will find it eventually now there are things that you can do to help you with discovering your voice faster like asking the right questions and finding out what you really like to

Mentorship's Role in Artistic Growth

make

and then getting mentorships as well. But if you're not able to stick with it long enough, then you're never gonna be able to find your own unique voice. So that's why it's really important for you to just stick with it just a little bit longer, just a little bit longer so that you can find your style, find your unique voice.
00:02:41
Speaker
And when you're able to stick with it a lot longer, then you're gonna actually be a lot better off than somebody who found their voice almost right away because they didn't put in nearly as much work as you have to find their voice. And they don't have as many repetitions. They don't have enough reps as you do.
00:03:04
Speaker
See, when you take longer to find your voice, what happens is when you find your voice, your skill set are going to be 10 times better if you found it right away when you're first starting. And when you find your voice, everything is going to look 10 times better because you took the time to really try to find what you really like to make and you hold your skills and you kept at it.

Encouragement and Resources

00:03:27
Speaker
That's why it's important to just keep at it. Keep going a little bit longer. Don't stop before the finish line. I promise you, you will find it. You just have to put in that work a little bit. Work a little bit harder. Hey, do you want to find your voice with your pottery, but you just don't have the time to actually experiment because you have a full time job?
00:03:46
Speaker
If this is you, I put together a free guide to help you manage your time and make experimenting easier for yourself so that you are able to experiment while still having a full time job and make pottery.
