What is up my pottery shapers and welcome to Shaping Your Pottery with Nick Torres. In these next five to six pottery lessons, I'm going to be talking about pulling a wall. But what is pulling a wall? Well, essentially pulling a wall is putting pressure into the clay so that you lift up the clay so it rises. That is the pretty simple definition of pulling a wall.

Technique Tips for Pulling a Wall

00:00:41
Speaker
Now, how do you pull a wall? Well, the first tip I need to give you before we get into the actual strategy tips, this first tip is you need to slow your wheel down. You need to slow your whole process down. If you can't slow down, then you're going to have a very, very hard time.
00:01:16

is you're simply going to practice this. Let your left hand into where you opened the clay and just let it kind of sit there. Now what you're going to practice is putting pressure with your right hand or your opposite hand if you were left handed and make sure your outside hand and just practice that pressure and slowly moving your hands up.

making pottery so you need to slow down first.

That is the very first thing you need to kind of get down. You need to kind of get the pressure down. So after that first initial pressure pool, I guess, this kind of sets up the clay so that you can make the cylinder and make whatever is easier.

Advanced Techniques and Control

So next thing you wanna do, so you wanna kinda repeat that same process of putting pressure with the outside, but this time you're gonna start the pressure, you're gonna push out with your inside hand that is inside the clay, and you're gonna push out towards the clay. Now remember, this is the same thing like centering. As you are centering, your elbows are into your body. Your elbows are always into your body, always connected, always stay firm. Don't let the clay bully you.

show it who's boss. Stay firm. So now you're going to push into the clay or out with your inside ham and you're pushing in with your outside ham and you are slowly moving the clay up until you get to about the rim. Once you get about maybe like a quarter of an inch to the rim, you want to really slow down the wheel or slow your hand process.
00:02:51
Speaker
Don't move too quickly or else you're gonna get a wobbly rim. You're gonna, once you get to about, to the top of the rim, you're gonna stay there for about one, you're gonna do a countdown. One, two, three, and then release your hands slowly. This is gonna help you with a lot of mess ups. It won't cause a lot of mess ups. And those are pretty much the steps that you need to take. And you just keep on doing this until you have a desired height.

Now I recommend,

really getting your cylinder down. I'll explain why in another episode, but you should really be getting your cylinder down before you start trying to make shapes. Thank you, and I hope this provided you with lots of value. We hope you enjoyed this episode of Shaping Your Pottery with Nick
