Speaker
What is up Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres. And on this episode of Shaping a Pottery, I'm going to be talking about why you need to be changing up your pottery consistently in order to evolve your foliage to grow as a potter and to actually, you know, make your voice come to life. So.
00:01:05
Speaker
A lot of times, we get stuck doing the same thing over and over and over again, right? It's working for us. So we keep doing those things over and over again, which is fine, right? You know, that old rule, if it ain't broke, then why stop doing it? But at the same time, I bet you if you're making the same thing over and over and over again, you're probably bored of what you're making, or maybe you're getting a little burnt out of what you're making.
00:01:35
Speaker
Whatever it is that you're doing, you're probably getting a little burnt out because you're doing the same things over and over and over again. I don't know about you, but that would make me incredibly bored. It's like a, let's think of it like this. So when somebody buys a new farm.

Importance of Evolution in Pottery

00:01:53
Speaker
They have to re-trail the road, they have to re-trail the farm, and then they actually have to do some work with the tractor in order to make that line come live and actually make all the seeds plow and do all that stuff for the farm. But eventually,
00:02:09
Speaker
They start doing it so much that they're literally just able to sit back in the tractor doing nothing without having to touch the wheel. It's literally just pressing the gas and that's it. It's just going in a straight line at that point because the road has already been paved and you're not going and trying anything different.
00:02:30
Speaker
And it's the same thing with our pottery. When we start doing things for so long, we know exactly what's going to happen. We know exactly how it's going to look like. We know the exact result going to come out of the kiln. And that's why it's so important to be evolving our voice constantly. At least almost every, I feel like we should be changing our voice at least every three months or so.

Incremental Changes for Growth

00:02:54
Speaker
And that it could be a little more could be a little less depending on what you're making how complicated you're making it. But I think we should at least be trying to change it up or evolving it further at least every three months. You know you don't have to change it all the time. But you have to take time to at least try to improve it.
00:03:12
Speaker
so that it starts looking a little better and that's how your voice starts evolving further and your pottery starts looking better not by doing the same things over and over again but by doing something that makes it look a little bit different you don't have to change it completely up
00:03:28
Speaker
No, no, no, we don't want that. We don't want it to look completely different compared to what we normally make. What we want is to make some small incremental changes that make it look that much better. It gives it that much flair. You don't have to, you know, go for the fences and swing for the fences all at once, all the time.
00:03:51
Speaker
Sometimes better just go for those singles. You know, you need to get on base. You need to get on base. You need to make it look just a little bit better. And eventually when you have all those singles added up, runs start coming

Continuous Evolution to Avoid Stagnation

00:04:03
Speaker
in. I know I'm using a baseball reference for those that don't know, but the more singles you have, the more you are going to score some runs. And that is with our pottery as well.
00:04:15
Speaker
Make small incremental changes. It doesn't have to be huge changes, but make some small changes to evolve your voice even further. Again, your pottery should never be staying the same the entire year you are making pottery, right? If your pottery is the same as it was a year ago, you are doing something wrong.
00:04:33
Speaker
You are doing something wrong. It's just that that's as simple as it is. You're doing something wrong if your pottery looks exactly the same state a year ago. It should be changing and should be evolving because that's how you get better. That's how you grow as a person. That's how you grow as a pottery. So keep evolving your pottery. Keep changing your pottery. And I ask you a question again. When was the last time you actually changed your pottery? Was it yesterday? Was it a year ago? Was it a month ago? Was it last week? When was the last time you changed your pottery?
00:05:02
Speaker
And if it hasn't, if it's been a little bit, maybe start thinking about how to evolve it further. I hope you guys enjoyed this episode and I'll see you guys in the next one.
