Welcome to Lab Rat Radio with Dr. Emily Dow and Dr. Nathan Jenkins! In our first episode, we introduce ourselves, the podcast, and the reason this show exists: health and fitness content has never been more available, and somehow people have never been more confused. We talk about what it means to think like scientists, coaches, professors, and lifelong lab rats in a space full of fear-based messaging, influencer certainty, and wellness internet chaos. Season 1 will cover fueling, hormones, metabolic flexibility, gut health, hormones, data interpretation, and how to read health content without losing your mind. If you’re tired of being told your body is broken by people trying to sell you a protocol, you’re come to the right place.

Introduction of Hosts and Their Credentials

00:00:00
Nathan Jenkins
for live.
00:00:02
Emily Dow
Hi.
00:00:04
Nathan Jenkins
hi
00:00:04
Emily Dow
Welcome to LabRat Radio. This is our first encounter, which I feel is probably unlikely. My name is Dr. Emily Dow. I have a PhD in exercise and nutritional sciences, and I'm a registered dietitian.
00:00:20
Emily Dow
But today I'm also joined by my co-host Dr. Nathan Jenkins, um who's you're gonna have to remind me the specific title of your PhD because I can't rattle that off the top of my head yet.
00:00:35
Nathan Jenkins
On my diploma, hi, this most likely is our first encounter for the audience. um And yeah, the my official title is PhD in kinesiology. I always say PhD in exercise physiology um and master's in bachelor of science and and master's in exercise science.

Purpose of the Podcast: Clearing Miscommunication in Nutrition and Exercise

00:00:59
Nathan Jenkins
So yeah, those are my credentials.
00:01:03
Emily Dow
Yeah, kind of coming from slightly opposing yet complementary backgrounds since I was brought up in the nutrition academia side and you were brought up more in the ex-phys academia side, um which is part of why this makes so much sense as a as a podcast duo because I think between the two of us throughout like my fledgling career and your more comprehensive career, we've identified a lot of the same issues
00:01:16
Nathan Jenkins
That's right.
00:01:33
Emily Dow
problems slash weaknesses in how these topics are communicated, which is kind of like the fundamental, i guess, problem that we're going to attempt to solve in our small way here.
00:01:48
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah, well, also, too, like, it's funny because I also have a. And we'll get into like how you and I met and how this is going to be and. All that, but like.
00:02:01
Nathan Jenkins
and Along the way, i
00:02:06
Nathan Jenkins
Sort of like I definitely like have that roots in exercise science, exercise physiology, but I also about 10 years ago or so eight to 10 years ago, i started getting into the more of into the nutrition space, which then which was a fully a result of my um at the time, like very Nate, I would say 2016 2017. It was pretty nascent Instagram era for nutrition and health and fitness, like kind of content on Instagram.
00:02:35
Nathan Jenkins
Like it was in a sense of like what it is today. And that's when I like realized, like, gosh, there's not much voice. There's not much of a voice of like, actually academically trained and you know um scientifically grounded professionals like saying anything here.

The Hosts' Academic and Professional Journeys

00:02:54
Nathan Jenkins
And that was the impetus for me starting an Instagram account in the first place. I had a personal one, and then started professional one. And then fast forward a few years later, you and I met. And then now here we are on a podcast, which we can get into all all that. but Yeah, um like the the whole thing of like exercise, nutrition, like fitness, wellness. um It's been a mess. it's been There's like been a lot of good there's a like there's a lot of good for sure, but there's like a lot of chaos and mayhem and a whole mess.
00:03:26
Nathan Jenkins
And we are here to, I would say, as an introduction to the show, um we are here to add some clarity to be a ah calming and grounding voice of people who like two professionals, but we're but're we're both professors and we are both highly you know seasoned professionals in that space. And both of our audiences, yours much bigger than mine, but both of our perspective audiences have been asking for a long time for something like this. So that's why we're here.
00:04:01
Emily Dow
Yeah, I think, I mean, kind of coming from a similar like lens where you know you kind of like you fall in love with one side, either the like exercise side or the nutrition side, and then you can't like uncouple them once you realize how interconnected they are.
00:04:18
Nathan Jenkins
we are yeah yeah
00:04:18
Emily Dow
um So same, like I stuck more traditional academia, nutrition focus, but then practically I was, I was training clients all throughout, you know, my education, um like doing those internships.
00:04:21
Nathan Jenkins
yeah
00:04:31
Nathan Jenkins
yeah
00:04:35
Emily Dow
I took some of those courses. So i think that's a unique perspective that we both have because I think one of one of the problems I feel is that because nutrition and exercise are like so relatable, they're things that everyone talks about, everyone engages with to some extent just in their lives with family members or what have you, it feels like something that anyone can talk about.
00:05:04
Emily Dow
And so it's very easy for those who are like entertaining communicators to make points that sound very convincing without them actually being founded in much

Challenges of Scientific Communication

00:05:15
Nathan Jenkins
um my God. Yeah. Yeah. And, and yeah, Emily, that's, ah that's, that's a, that's that exact topic is something you and I have like gone back and forth about, like ranting to each other for the last like like two years.
00:05:16
Emily Dow
scientific basis.
00:05:18
Emily Dow
Whereas
00:05:28
Nathan Jenkins
as We've been, you know, friends, two two years and change, I think it is now. In fact, well, whatever, like somewhere in that ballpark. um Where it's like the sound bites, it's the real. And lately, like the video, the this is not a clean podcast, the fucking like react videos, right?
00:05:49
Nathan Jenkins
um Of somebody like, like the little video inset, and then whoever's accountant is watching, the they're filming themselves watching the video. And then the video stops and then they they respond like freaking like, I'd rather like, let me chew my arm off.
00:06:06
Nathan Jenkins
I hate that so much.
00:06:06
Emily Dow
Yeah.
00:06:07
Nathan Jenkins
um It is. And then, and then, and then they give their hot take in response and then it gets a million clicks and likes and views. But okay, let's, let's use that as a pivot to like, what it is, what are we trying to do here?
00:06:18
Nathan Jenkins
What are you, what are you and I, like, what are we talking about all the time? Like it's needed, like a gap that we're trying to fill in as voices. of like fucking reason and intelligence. and Okay, that's that was harsh. I don't mean to say that people aren't smart, but you know what I'm saying?
00:06:36
Nathan Jenkins
What are we trying to do?
00:06:36
Emily Dow
Yeah. I think like, I think an easy way for me to put it from my perspective is the fact that you've kind of got like the, the fitness influencers who are very compelling communicators without a thorough enough understanding of the topics that they're talking about to really give useful guidance in many cases. It's kind of just like,
00:07:02
Emily Dow
factual statements or oftentimes not factual statements that sound convincing enough.
00:07:07
Nathan Jenkins
It's presented as such, yeah.
00:07:09
Emily Dow
Yeah, for people to like pull, grab onto them and then get arguably more confused than when they started consuming this content. Whereas the other side is like the other academics who like no shade.
00:07:23
Emily Dow
I love my peers. My colleagues are wonderful.
00:07:25
Nathan Jenkins
No, let's, let's throw it.
00:07:25
Emily Dow
I love that upbringing.
00:07:27
Nathan Jenkins
We're going throw some shade on this fucking podcast.
00:07:27
Emily Dow
Yeah.
00:07:28
Nathan Jenkins
So let's go ahead and throw some shade. Yeah. Cause I will too.
00:07:33
Emily Dow
we tend I'm going to include myself in this also, but we tend to not be great at communicating science with the public. And part of that is like time constraint related.
00:07:44
Emily Dow
you know, a lot of academics are already doing a ton of unpaid work all the time. So it's it's a big ask, but at the same time, you'll hear them complain about the fact that their science is being misrepresented and they're not willing to communicate it directly themselves.
00:07:49
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:07:59
Emily Dow
So trying to kind of put our money where our mouth is, for lack of a better term, and be the ones that are sort of creating that bridge.
00:08:05
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:08:08
Nathan Jenkins
did Did you see me roll my You saw me roll my eyes for a second there.
00:08:11
Emily Dow
yeah
00:08:13
Nathan Jenkins
And you know you know exactly what rolled my eyes at, which is like to include yourself in that. No, Emily, you are uncommonly talented at communicating scientific concepts in three minute reels or less from the front seat of your Bronco.

Roles in Podcast Production and Educational Goals

00:08:30
Nathan Jenkins
who we will affectionately refer to as Bucky, because that's what you told me, that is is what you call it. um
00:08:37
Emily Dow
It has an air.
00:08:39
Nathan Jenkins
Bucky has a name, and that yeah that is your studio. And in said studio, you have done an ah incredible job of communicating science.
00:08:52
Nathan Jenkins
and And in a way that's like, but yeah, they are little nuggets for sure. um but it's so it's super like obviously based on so again we've been connected since we had more or less the same size following and in the last since you've got your your new job you it's been and on the what a dozen or so podcasts you've been on like a big time podcast you've been on in the last six months or so everybody talks about like wow she's like blown up she's blown up she's blown up i'm like hey it will you know we've been friends these last couple years like yeah she's been doing this for a long time it just like
00:09:30
Nathan Jenkins
It's so interesting, too. It's like when you entered the this this new job in January, when you're like kind of moving, not you you haven't like completely closed off and neither have I. We'll talk about my, I've also got a new job in the academic space as well. um You moved away from like taking on clients and you started just putting out so content that's like not trying to attract business of any kind. It's just purely educational.
00:09:56
Nathan Jenkins
and And people love it. Like, people love it. it's just That's when you've kind of exploded. um
00:10:05
Nathan Jenkins
And so that's like, it's so is super interesting, super cool. And again, that's part of the impetus of like, okay, let's lengthen the conversation because each one is like a ah ah little soundbite. Yeah, I rolled my eyes because you're like, oh, I'm not that good at it. um Yeah, you're incredibly talented at it.
00:10:20
Nathan Jenkins
And and and why people have people who have known me have also been asking me for a long time to like, you need to start a podcast. and it's like, let me, but yes, I would love to do that, but I'm not going one by myself. I need to have the right co-host or partner. like i And in this case, based on who you are and the audience that you have, and like I view myself as your co-host and I'm going to like, little inside behind the scenes stuff here for the listeners. Like I'm doing all this stuff, like figuring out how to record this thing and like actually like All the technical stuff, which I don't really know how to do, but I know, Emily, would you via have any interest in doing any that?
00:10:56
Emily Dow
No, I'm just a girl we've established. I, there's, there's no chance in hell I'd be figuring any of this out.
00:11:02
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:11:02
Emily Dow
So like, I appreciate ah there's, there's been interest expressed in these like longer form conversations or recording some of my lectures. And that's kind of like what this is intended to serve as, but in a more conversational manner.
00:11:12
Nathan Jenkins
Right.
00:11:17
Emily Dow
um
00:11:17
Nathan Jenkins
Mm-hmm.
00:11:18
Emily Dow
And like, again, I appreciate, I appreciate all the love. i know that like, I think the earlier generation of like evidence-based communicators on the internet have gotten some flack for being like a little too boring, a little bit too like,
00:11:32
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:11:33
Emily Dow
not necessarily charismatic or entertaining enough to really capture the right people's attention or in the right way. And that's been like a goal of mine as I've gone through my education is to like also hone that at the same time, which has been, it's worked out in a lucky way, I would say.
00:11:44
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:11:52
Emily Dow
But what the listeners don't know is that like,
00:11:52
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:11:57
Emily Dow
since you and I have been friends in like a professional context, you've also, and and a reason that it makes so much sense to work on this together is because you have served as like beyond my direct academic advisors and my committee members.
00:12:01
Nathan Jenkins
Mm-hmm.
00:12:11
Emily Dow
And we've known each other since like before I defended my dissertation and you've been like my internet mentor throughout those steps. And like, I mean, even fundamental in helping me secure this job at University of Arizona um because you have such similar experiences.
00:12:29
Emily Dow
So I've really leaned on you for a lot of this professional growth that no one else would necessarily know about.
00:12:29
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:12:37
Nathan Jenkins
Well, yeah, I appreciate that. Yeah, I guess I, wrote i wrote I wrote one of your letters, um
00:12:43
Emily Dow
did.
00:12:44
Nathan Jenkins
yeah which was which was ah which is an honor and a privilege. and and your And your now boss commented like, wow, you wrote a really strong letter. i was like, yeah, i it was easy because that's um that's Emily. you know um And we even like to to to to the point that you're making a minute ago about like academics.
00:12:59
Nathan Jenkins
um Like, and I actually, you know, you know that i listen to every podcast

Emily's Academic Background and Research Focus

00:13:04
Nathan Jenkins
that you're on. it was actually the one, I think it was the one with... the the Flex Diet podcast that you're on with our mutual friend, Dr. Mike T.
00:13:12
Nathan Jenkins
Nelson, and and a colleague of mine as well.
00:13:14
Emily Dow
Shout out.
00:13:16
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah, shout out to to to dr one of many Dr. Mikes on the internet. who we yeah um
00:13:20
Emily Dow
yeah
00:13:23
Nathan Jenkins
But yeah, the um you guys were talking about how like so many academics are not great at like having a foot in both sandboxes, where i think which you and I both have. It's like,
00:13:37
Nathan Jenkins
being a ah ah true academic. like we're at We're in the trenches. We're teaching students. We have our share of, like you neither you or nor I are currently enrolled with it. There's a lot of research, but we have a lot of history there.
00:13:51
Nathan Jenkins
um I certainly do. i've i've I ran a research lab at a major university for a long time. We get into our respective backgrounds here in a second. but But also, in the industry space, like coaching and advising, account consulting,
00:14:07
Nathan Jenkins
that kind of thing. like
00:14:11
Nathan Jenkins
yeah We both have that experience. Where I think you have, where this show is going to be so cool, it's like, Emily, I think you're one of the most talented, anybody listening to this who know who knows you at all will 100% agree. like You are uncommonly gifted at, like that like if there's a Venn diagram of academic experience and and abilities,
00:14:37
Nathan Jenkins
and coaching with clients, and then the forward-facing social media and whatever kind of internet presence, at the center that Venn diagram, there you are. And that is why i was like, hey, like before, again, before your explosion here on the internet, I was like, you we need to do something. And you do you remember we had a Zoom call? um Like, I want to call it like September of last year.
00:14:59
Emily Dow
I do.
00:15:01
Nathan Jenkins
And we're like, how can we, we're like, this is way before you freaking blew up. Let's like figure out ways we can work together. And that time it was like thinking about like like co-coaching or something together, like so sharing, like having like clients that we would hire both of us in some way or something like that.
00:15:12
Emily Dow
Mm-hmm.
00:15:18
Nathan Jenkins
but it's like Then it's evolved over time into like what we're doing now. So um I'm super pumped about it. you know it's like And it's an honor. And I hope, you know again, your your audience is going to be here for you.
00:15:31
Nathan Jenkins
um But I hope that they, but and my goal with it all is to like, just to kind of magnet, like be be your megaphone um that you use to like shout into the space, which you don't need that.
00:15:47
Emily Dow
i've I've been like uncomfortable this whole time.
00:15:48
Nathan Jenkins
You don't you don't need that for Instagram. You're what?
00:15:52
Emily Dow
The whole time that you've just been complimenting me, I've been so uncomfortable. um
00:15:55
Nathan Jenkins
Oh, sorry.
00:15:56
Emily Dow
i i so You're fine.
00:15:56
Nathan Jenkins
No.
00:15:58
Emily Dow
You're fine. It's the, you know, um that's that's that's a normal experience.
00:16:02
Nathan Jenkins
I do. Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
00:16:05
Emily Dow
um I appreciate that. I think both you and i have the same point of view, though, that like the... the scientific background, the coaching background, and then even the communication piece, um they like those Venn diagrams really all feed into each other. Like I know that working with people one-on-one has helped me keep my head on straight when it comes to like what type of questions I'm asking in a scientific, in the scientific realm, as opposed to just like
00:16:39
Emily Dow
doing the, I refer to it as like the self-masturbatory thing that academics do where it's like we're trying to impress ourselves and each other and like make it as complicated as possible because that makes us look good and smart, but actually disconnecting from the people that were allegedly trying to serve in the first place in the process. And so having like the coaching might have foot in the coaching space, even if it's only with like a very limited number of people right now.
00:17:06
Emily Dow
um And also practicing the communication regularly. I think that makes us better in all three domains.
00:17:14
Nathan Jenkins
Right. ah hundred percent. um Yeah. ah So like, well, let's use that as like a ah pivot to like, all right, I think most of the people listening to this will know a little bit about you, quite a bit about you, but like, why don't you go ahead and give a rundown of like what your work situation looks like as far as like the academic and coaching and what you're doing on your Instagram, what you're doing here, like starting a podcast, like,
00:17:45
Emily Dow
Yeah.
00:17:46
Nathan Jenkins
give the get And and and like a little also a little bit of history there, too. and there There will be some people who maybe are hearing it for the first time or maybe you hear it again, whatever. like give Give a quick little bio and then maybe you can we can go back and forth and like kind of introduce ourselves to the audience like a little bit more like thoroughly.
00:18:06
Emily Dow
Yeah, I think, okay, to give like the origin story sort of first and then it'll tie into where I currently exist. um I was definitely like a science kid, science nerd, had that brain um that was obsessed with Bill Nye.
00:18:22
Emily Dow
Like the original plan in college was the OG science communicator.
00:18:26
Nathan Jenkins
The OG...
00:18:30
Emily Dow
um we all We've all been there. And... the original plan in undergrad was to study astrophysics. That's what I thought i was, that was the goal was to be like a NASA scientist. I love math.
00:18:45
Emily Dow
I love the scientific method. And I just don't think I was aware of the fact that Because other the other side of me was like kind of a meathead.
00:18:55
Emily Dow
and I was an athlete growing up.
00:18:56
Nathan Jenkins
Mm-hmm.
00:18:56
Emily Dow
And I liked to run around outside with my brother and our friends.
00:18:58
Nathan Jenkins
Mm-hmm.
00:19:00
Emily Dow
And activity was a huge part of my life.
00:19:01
Nathan Jenkins
Mm-hmm.
00:19:03
Emily Dow
And when I retired from the very like amateur level of athletics that I was involved with, that piece was kind of missing. And that's when I sort of like happened upon the reality that exercise physiology exists and nutrition as a scientific field exists.
00:19:21
Emily Dow
And so I kind of got to like merge those two parts of my personality and switched over to exercise science was actually my first major. I did a year of that and then pivoted to dietetics.
00:19:33
Nathan Jenkins
Oh, I didn't know that.
00:19:33
Emily Dow
um
00:19:34
Nathan Jenkins
I did not know that about you. I thought I knew your whole story.
00:19:36
Emily Dow
Yeah.
00:19:38
Nathan Jenkins
You switched from, okay. Well, we'll get, that's funny.
00:19:40
Emily Dow
I switched early on, um very early, because I was also at the same time.
00:19:41
Nathan Jenkins
Okay.
00:19:44
Nathan Jenkins
I think you i think you made a smart switch, but yeah.
00:19:48
Emily Dow
i agree, I'm glad in hindsight that I went that route, because what was happening is I was like getting ahead of myself. I was doing an internship at a gym during my first year of undergrad, and I kind of recognized that like I was learning hands on many of the same things I was learning in the classroom.
00:20:00
Nathan Jenkins
Mm-hmm.
00:20:05
Emily Dow
I was like, if I'm going to do both,
00:20:07
Nathan Jenkins
hell Hell yes.
00:20:08
Emily Dow
I might as well double dip and like practically learn the exercise science stuff.
00:20:12
Nathan Jenkins
who that Yes. Oh, my God. Yes. As a former exercise science professor, I 100% agree. That's a whole other tangent. Yeah. Okay. keep going.
00:20:23
Emily Dow
ah So ended up committing to, I'm glad I did. i committed to dietetics. Um, did I, I fell in love with that, but I knew I was never going to be like a clinical dietitian. I'm not cut out for that lifestyle to all my healthcare care people out there.
00:20:39
Emily Dow
Um, props to you because my internship rotation in a County hospital almost took my life. Um, um, So did the dietetics thing. i was into the sports nutrition side, obviously a lot of like young dietitians are.
00:20:52
Nathan Jenkins
Okay.
00:20:54
Emily Dow
So my master's was in, um, more performance nutrition. It was nutrition and human performance. And then because I chose to write a thesis, we had multiple options for like our capstone project.
00:21:08
Emily Dow
Um, I was fascinated by the gut microbiome and, I'm so glad that I chose such a vacuous topic that was like hell to research at the time and also kind of brand new and still is kind of brand new.
00:21:23
Nathan Jenkins
it was it was It was very early days though, right?
00:21:24
Emily Dow
um It was very early days for sure. And especially because i I was curious about like the relationship between exercise and the gut microbiome.
00:21:34
Emily Dow
And that was like all barely, barely a thing at the time.
00:21:39
Nathan Jenkins
so It's a whole like wide wide open frontier kind of thing, yeah.
00:21:39
Emily Dow
So
00:21:43
Emily Dow
Exactly, which is why no one will ever read my thesis because it wasn't it didn't have much to it, honestly. But what it did do is it made me realize that like, This was like a land of opportunity, for lack of a better term.
00:21:57
Nathan Jenkins
That's right.
00:21:57
Emily Dow
And I had so many more questions.
00:21:58
Nathan Jenkins
here
00:21:59
Emily Dow
And that's kind of exactly what lays the foundation for a PhD. So I just kept on going. um ASU has a cool program that's in exercise and nutritional sciences.
00:22:10
Emily Dow
So you get to work with faculty on both sides.
00:22:11
Nathan Jenkins
ahs ri
00:22:13
Emily Dow
um And that worked out perfectly, landed me kind of in the research setting, studied the gut, studied performance stuff. um i had a lot of liberties to kind of come up with my own ideas because i had such an awesome mentor did my postdoc kind of in the same realm and landed in an academic setting now teaching uh in both like a hybrid program once again which worked out perfectly
00:22:35
Nathan Jenkins
Yep.
00:22:38
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah. Which also like kind of right down the road. So you did your PhD.
00:22:43
Emily Dow
yeah
00:22:44
Nathan Jenkins
Did you do? No. yeah What was the name of your undergrad? I can never remember.
00:22:49
Emily Dow
Undergrad was ASU, my master's was at Logan University, and then PhD was back at ASU.
00:22:49
Nathan Jenkins
a Oh. Logan. I should remember that because that's my like one of my best friends. His name is Logan. um
00:22:58
Emily Dow
A shame.
00:23:00
Nathan Jenkins
yes Shout out, buddy. yeah I know you'll listen to this. And then, yeah, ph your PhD was back at ASU. And now you're at U of A in Tucson, right?
00:23:11
Emily Dow
Correct. The rival of ASU. Yeah.
00:23:14
Nathan Jenkins
Which is hilarious, yeah.
00:23:14
Emily Dow
And throughout all of that, I was coaching.

Nathan's Academic and Professional Background

00:23:17
Emily Dow
So like, that's kind of the other side. That's how I paid my way through grad school.
00:23:20
Nathan Jenkins
Right.
00:23:21
Emily Dow
It's how I kept myself busy. um So I've been working with clients since. I didn't, I was training people in person throughout undergrad. And then I didn't feel like I was qualified enough to do the nutrition piece until I graduated with that bachelor's degree, at least.
00:23:36
Nathan Jenkins
Okay, fair enough.
00:23:36
Emily Dow
um Then I started working with people on the nutrition side and I still do some of that to this day, but that's also when I started my Instagram was during the pandemic because I had all this free time and i recognized that it was an online presence was going to be important.
00:23:41
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:23:47
Nathan Jenkins
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:23:53
Emily Dow
I don't know that I recognized to what extent, but it was pitiful up until basically like several months ago now.
00:23:54
Nathan Jenkins
Sure.
00:23:57
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah. Yeah.
00:24:02
Emily Dow
So yeah.
00:24:03
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah. yeah yeah um
00:24:07
Nathan Jenkins
No, yeah, that's awesome. And then what was the,
00:24:15
Nathan Jenkins
I guess the follow-up that I have to to to your background and like your, again, like trying to capture that, like through the, let's view this through the lens of like why we are here now, like doing this podcast. And then and for the listeners, like if you're trying to like hang on, like where's this going?
00:24:32
Nathan Jenkins
we're Here in a minute, we're going to like lay out a few of our ideas for like this first season that we're going to call it. We've got like ideas for 10 episodes or so. Say little bit about what you have observed during your time in the industry and also in the ah and the academic space as well that um that that that that led you to like the state that you are in now, which is like, what do you think about
00:25:06
Nathan Jenkins
during your work day to day? And what what motivates you to make all these reels that people love so much?
00:25:13
Emily Dow
Yeah, that I think it's a combination of things. a you recognize very quickly as a professional in this field that like, the general person is consuming a lot of content about fitness and a lot of it sucks and is confusing.
00:25:29
Emily Dow
And there's like, there's so much information available, but half of it is garbage and there's no way to distinguish it because everyone's speaking with the same level of confidence. um and everyone's like learning what to say and now everyone's using ChatGPT to write their shit for them.
00:25:44
Emily Dow
So it just becomes this like this vortex where you go in confused and you exit confused in a different way.
00:25:45
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:25:54
Emily Dow
And that's useful to nobody.
00:25:54
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:25:56
Emily Dow
Whereas in like a teaching environment, which is, I didn't ever expect to enjoy teaching to the extent that I do. But especially because
00:26:05
Nathan Jenkins
Oh, God. Yeah, you're so good at
00:26:07
Emily Dow
Like, I think it's like I love these topics. So like, I think it's so interesting. I think it's so cool and so relevant. And when you communicate with students and the general public, we're talking to intelligent people that are capable of grasping these things and capable of also finding it very interesting, which is exactly how we promote like the implementation piece.
00:26:23
Nathan Jenkins
Right.
00:26:30
Emily Dow
And you can explain things in such a way where you can see that it clicks for somebody. And that's, A, a very rewarding feeling, but also it's kind of limited to like,
00:26:43
Emily Dow
like I don't just want students in a university setting to have access to that sort of experience and that's not what people are getting on the internet.
00:26:47
Nathan Jenkins
and then
00:26:51
Emily Dow
So my sort of like goal with social media as a passion project was like making that kind of education a little more accessible using social media as the vehicle for that.
00:27:03
Emily Dow
And now what I think is even better is using this podcast as a vehicle for that because we can go a little bit more in depth on everything.
00:27:13
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah, 100%. Yeah, I think about that all the time, that the part where you were talking about is, gosh, there's so much that it actually goes both ways. Like there's so much stuff that we talk about in the classroom.
00:27:29
Nathan Jenkins
where in my I'm still un new to podcasting. I'm trying to get my mic in the right spot here. um the What we talk about in the classroom resonates so much for these students.
00:27:42
Nathan Jenkins
And to another point you just made is like, yeah, I'm so like the reason if I've ever gotten like glowing and I know you have to, you told me, I'm going embarrass you a little bit like the the the the student feedback on the course evaluations, the things that students say on this, making glow on paper, like I've gotten those two.
00:28:00
Emily Dow
Uh-huh. her
00:28:05
Nathan Jenkins
And I think the bottom line is like, you're the most enthusiastic person in the room. You're all like when you're the professor and there's the students, the the the professor that's like the one that's most enthusiastic about the content.
00:28:19
Nathan Jenkins
that there I've gotten a lot of like, okay, I didn't realize how much I love this topic until Dr. J was what they call me. um lost his mind over like the metabolic energy systems, which is one of the things, we're gonna touch on that quite a bit, um which I know you're passionate about as well, because you talk about a lot of your reels.
00:28:33
Emily Dow
Mm-hmm.
00:28:40
Nathan Jenkins
um And like when you see that, like like so there when you're in the classroom and you can see the enthusiasm rubbing off, they're catching it because you can't have, they can if you're enthusiastic enthusiastic enough,
00:28:57
Nathan Jenkins
They cannot help but catch it. And then that's when learning actually happens. And then it's like, all right, but then also there's this whole thing of like the internet now, like social media, Instagram, blah, blah, blah.
00:29:10
Nathan Jenkins
Like, can we can we capture that and transmit that to a broader audience? maybe even just for free, right? Like even just like, who cares if we make money off it, you know, it's just like a, passion it's a passion.
00:29:23
Emily Dow
Yeah.
00:29:24
Nathan Jenkins
It's a hobby. It becomes, it's where work and our own personal interests and fitness, because like you said, like I'm also like, well, we can do my introduction here in a second too.
00:29:35
Nathan Jenkins
um
00:29:36
Emily Dow
Please, yeah.

The Importance of Balanced Data Collection

00:29:38
Nathan Jenkins
But like, yeah, like, but like it's been a personal passion of mine since like the freaking late,
00:29:38
Emily Dow
We'll get there.
00:29:45
Nathan Jenkins
1990s, early 2000s, when I was like getting into like what I was going to do for my career and like choosing a major in college. um And then, like yeah, started an Instagram account. and like let me get let me Let me get this stuff out there to to to the masses in some way, but also make it high quality. right um like make it different than the, like just the typical influencer, just like you said, it's talking to the camera, talking to the phone with a high level of confidence. And in fact, my struggle, and think yours too, a lot times is like, maybe we lack a little confidence relative to some of our, what call them peers or the influencer versus the academic.
00:30:29
Nathan Jenkins
ah somebody that's like a true expert actually lacks a lot of confidence in sending out messages because there's, we also understand all the caveats and all the nuances, all the things that like, whatever the conclusions that we might draw are fraught with exceptions based on context and situational variance and differences.
00:30:29
Emily Dow
Yeah. hmm.
00:30:52
Nathan Jenkins
Right. And so that makes it like so hard to like give, but give us a quick take home message. Like, um yeah and we and we we and By the time this comes out, there will be now two or three at least posts on Instagram that we've published together where we like really get into those nuances and differences, those collaborative posts that we have where we you know They have like 15 to 20, 25-ish references appended to the end of each of them because we are so freaking thorough to to to touch all of the bases as much as we can.
00:30:59
Emily Dow
Yeah. I feel like...

Podcast Goals and Educational Content

00:31:28
Nathan Jenkins
ah you know of the literature base.
00:31:29
Emily Dow
well
00:31:29
Nathan Jenkins
right
00:31:31
Emily Dow
Right. And I do think that like the hesitation with audiences sometimes is that integrity does not sound confident a lot of the time. And like, it's it's easy to not recognize like, yeah, a three minute reel.
00:31:41
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:31:45
Emily Dow
The goal is that it is very easy to interpret, but there's so much time spent on the back end in like making it that way and taking like
00:31:54
Nathan Jenkins
So much time. Yeah.
00:31:57
Emily Dow
40, 50 references, like whittling that down, deciding what to say from, from which papers and, and parsing it all together in, in a comprehensive way. It's, That's like an entirely different skill set, even than doing that for like a manuscript, which is something that you have a lot more time to to commit to.
00:32:12
Nathan Jenkins
Oh yeah.
00:32:15
Emily Dow
But i think it and another like valuable characteristic why people like to listen to like you teach. And I've gotten some of this feedback, too, is because we actually live it.
00:32:27
Emily Dow
And we implement all of this in our own lives.
00:32:28
Nathan Jenkins
oh yeah
00:32:30
Emily Dow
We are training hard all the time. We do the things that we talk about in the classroom.
00:32:38
Nathan Jenkins
Okay.
00:32:38
Emily Dow
And I think part of that is because of our like hybridized backgrounds. And so I think it's officially your turn. I'm going flip it onto you to like, Maybe give me a synopsis of like how your academic background like informed coaching stuff, how coaching stuff informed the way that you approach like teaching, especially now in this new role as a professor in a medical school. So I think if we can kind of tie all that together, it'll be a little clearer to the listeners like why this does make so much sense. Yeah.
00:33:08
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah. Oh, okay. Yes, I appreciate that. um And you feel free to, you know you know me, Emily, and we've talked enough, you know that I can be long-winded. So when I get, but it's purely from a place of like being excited about something. So please stop me and redirect if I get too long. But um yeah, again, this is also partly an introduction to the audience who is mostly, aunt frankly, just by the freaking numbers, let's be honest, here for you.
00:33:38
Nathan Jenkins
um but And so like they're gonna know a lot more of what was just covered by you and know less about like, all right, who's who the hell is this dude in a home office with a backwards hat on trying to figure out how to hold the mic that I've just now charged up for the first time today that I bought six months ago because I was gonna start doing more of this kind of stuff.
00:33:59
Emily Dow
Thank
00:34:01
Nathan Jenkins
of Okay, so my name is Dr. Nathan Jenkins. I am a current, um my current role is a like, as you just alluded to, I'll start with I'll start at the current time and work backwards.
00:34:12
Nathan Jenkins
um I am an associate professor of medical education. i teach Matthew Sholling, physiology or will be teaching physiology companies recording this in June i'm not sure when is going to go out recording this early June of 2026 come August of 2026 I will be teaching first and second year medical students medical school students. Dr. Matthew Sholling, physiology my expertise and focus areas in that role or cardiovascular metabolic. Dr. Matthew Sholling, physiology.
00:34:43
Nathan Jenkins
Matthew but i'll be filling in and other areas of physiology as well, like renal. liver, like wherever they want me, I'll just be covering. But my formal training is in exercise physiology. We did touch on that a while ago.
00:34:56
Nathan Jenkins
um My, if you look up like my papers and whatnot, it's mostly like exercise induced adaptations on vascular and vascular health, cardiovascular health, muscle and glucose and insulin metabolism.
00:35:16
Nathan Jenkins
So like basically the intersection of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases where I'd spent most of my research career, which was my previous iteration. Let me, okay, now I'm gonna jump little 2013 2022, I was a professor in the, also at UGA, but in a different department, in the kinesiology department, where I ran a research lab and also taught exercise physiology, classes of various flavors, basic exercise physiology, cardiovascular physiology,
00:35:47
Nathan Jenkins
Exercise and obesity, type 2 diabetes courses, that kind of thing. um And I ran a research lab investigating all those all those things.
00:35:59
Nathan Jenkins
In the interim there, let's talk about that. Like my my industry experience, like and fit to dovetail on some of the stuff you were just talking about, i while I was still a professor there, I also got into nutrition coaching space with a company that some listeners may be familiar with called RP Strength.
00:36:18
Nathan Jenkins
Shout out to them. I love them. Dr. Mike Isertel and Nick Shaw, they were the founders of the company, they were my bosses who they hired me as one of, at the time, like ah close to 30 kind of PhD level coaches.
00:36:37
Nathan Jenkins
um This is before like apps and stuff, which the everybody, including RP, is lean hearted to now. But like we would design nutrition and training programs for our clients remotely this is before covid but then it really took off during during covid um and uh it took in fact it took off to the point where like i'm going to try to keep this short i told you to stop you haven't stopped me yet but i'm talking a lot um okay so yeah yeah so during covid it really took off to the point where it's like
00:37:06
Emily Dow
and i Keep going.
00:37:12
Nathan Jenkins
this is like another full-time job. And then 2022, my son Camden, who, well let's just talk about, yeah that we're going to talk about my son on this podcast. He's going to come up.
00:37:24
Nathan Jenkins
I will tell funny stories this of the crazy stuff that he does. It's just going to come up. um So yeah, introduction introduction to my four-year-old.

Preview of Upcoming Episodes and Collaborations

00:37:31
Nathan Jenkins
But yeah, he was coming along at the at this time. like And at that point, I had two full-time jobs. And so I had to like,
00:37:39
Nathan Jenkins
choose one or the other and just for lots of reasons it made more sense to go all in on coaching and um consulting versus like i was i was tenured like i had been there for like i said like nine years um so i stepped away from that and went all in on uh on coaching and it's been really cool um so yeah that's basically that's that's probably enough background like professional stuff for me uh throughout all that time i started my instagram and like in 2017 i was like freaking crushing it with like five six thousand followers at the time like not even not even six like probably five or something and i've like leveled i like quickly like leveled off and stayed there and so that's fine and then i like i just haven't really know what as sg has evolved i haven't really been haven't felt that being i haven't like been bothered to try to
00:38:33
Nathan Jenkins
you know, uh, grow it more or whatever, like who cares, but just like put out like authentic scientific content, um, who that they'd like will literally just help anybody who comes across it, you know?
00:38:46
Nathan Jenkins
Um, and within zero intention of like trying to like be rewarded for it in any way, but like if it's valuable to somebody, then cool. And then and in in intermix, and intersperse with all that is to like goofy videos of of him. And also if you if you, for anybody that is, does make the decision to like follow me, like i hope you're hungry because I post a lot of food content.
00:39:14
Nathan Jenkins
Like a lot like a lot of food
00:39:15
Emily Dow
That's, we somehow skipped over the fact that you're the culinary expertise in this dynamic too, which is funny because as a dietitian and like nutrition professional, that's something that people expect from me.
00:39:30
Emily Dow
And we've joked about this. I'm just a girl as we've discussed.
00:39:34
Nathan Jenkins
You're not a disaster, you're not a disaster, but you're not not a disaster.
00:39:37
Emily Dow
It's not a complete disaster. But I'm not not a disaster. It's the level of effort I'm willing to put into that department of my life is pitiful. um But that that is productive for you all, because Nathan can cover some cool food science like cooking application stuff.
00:40:00
Emily Dow
I don't know how much we'll get into it, but especially for like some
00:40:01
Nathan Jenkins
Hell yeah. this ah that's It's not on our 10 episode like list here, but if we want to have a food podcast, if people want that, a cooking techniques podcast, oh, hell yeah.
00:40:14
Nathan Jenkins
I think we probably lose some people with that.
00:40:17
Emily Dow
I think it is valuable because everyone's always... this is going to rage bait you. um People are always demanding recipes um from people like you and I, which for me it's like laughable.
00:40:26
Nathan Jenkins
Oh, God, you did you are rage-weighted. Who asked you, wait, wait, wait, wait. Who was asking you for recipes, Emily?
00:40:34
Emily Dow
Well, people who don't know that I don't cook, like I'm mostly clients and like understandable, understandable that you might think that that's something to expect of a dietitian. I have to be very clear.
00:40:47
Nathan Jenkins
Yes.
00:40:48
Emily Dow
I'm like, I can point you in the direction of others, but you're not getting recipes for me.
00:40:51
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:40:52
Emily Dow
Yeah.
00:40:53
Nathan Jenkins
Point them in my direction because I can, well also, but also it's rage baby because I don't do recipes. I just like, just vibes.
00:41:00
Emily Dow
Vibes. were We're heavy on the vibes.
00:41:02
Nathan Jenkins
miss but
00:41:03
Emily Dow
But I think the ability to like implement the nutrition...
00:41:03
Nathan Jenkins
Just learn techniques and then vibe it up. Get a smoker.
00:41:11
Emily Dow
Get a smoker. Yeah. um
00:41:13
Nathan Jenkins
She
00:41:15
Emily Dow
Yeah, sure. that's
00:41:17
Nathan Jenkins
yeah she she says she says, okay.
00:41:17
Emily Dow
That's me. I personally want to do.
00:41:21
Emily Dow
skip. um I do think it's valuable though because like a lot of cooking content doesn't necessarily have the nutrition considerations um whereas like even just the stuff on your stories it does I think it does help contextualize a lot of the decision making that we talk about especially
00:41:31
Nathan Jenkins
yeah Yeah.
00:41:39
Emily Dow
um one of to like sneak peek this. One of the goals that we have with this podcast is to incorporate like mini case studies almost um within the topic of each episode so that we're not just
00:41:50
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah. Yes. Let's talk about that.
00:41:55
Emily Dow
Speaking to the topics in a way that sounds pretty and like sort of explains the concepts but doesn't actually help people apply them in a meaningful way um So even in some of that like I know a lot of our discussions with clients has more to do with like the decision-making processes and the way that they can approach thinking about food and That'll play into the way we approach those cases and I can see some cooking tidbits work their way into those discussions.
00:42:26
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah, we can we can play that by ear, but that's a perfect, I think that's a perfect pivot, Emily, to let's get into um some of the nuts and bolts, the meat and potatoes, picture analogy of what we're going to, like, what our plan is for, like, we've, all right. So we have, like, let me take a quick step back.
00:42:48
Nathan Jenkins
You know, we're like doing this podcast with the same fact. So we've just both established, like, I have this new role in the, in the medical school. you're still, you're now one semester down, starting soon to be starting your second semester as a brand new assistant professor of nutrition exercise science.

Reflections on Podcast Creation Process

00:43:06
Nathan Jenkins
Did get it right? know, something like that.
00:43:07
Emily Dow
Nutrition and human performance is close.
00:43:08
Nathan Jenkins
ah that' that's what That's what it said. um yes um
00:43:15
Emily Dow
Transcripts.
00:43:16
Nathan Jenkins
a yeah And, you know, we we, based on that, like, we can't, like, necessarily, could we we felt like to just kind of chunk it.
00:43:27
Nathan Jenkins
um Let's just do, like, we'll come commit to one season, 10-ish episodes. Maybe 12. Actually, I've already thought of some bonus episodes that I've appended to this list. and i'm not We're not going to cover those. if but depending on But depending on, like, take rate of listen listenership and audience feedback,
00:43:45
Nathan Jenkins
it may easily it could I could see it easily evolving into, like let's just make it one continuous season or like a very quick turnaround and pivot to season two. Whatever. like let's like but Let's not get out of our skis. Let's just talk about like our general ideas and plans for topics to cover. We kind of go like kind of one by one of what we were thinking about for this season.
00:44:10
Nathan Jenkins
um And yeah, like why don't you start it off? what What are we thinking?
00:44:17
Emily Dow
Yeah. i think like I think one of one of our like main underlying principles is to sort of attempt to combat the rampant opinions and ideologies that propagate content, especially, and to like hone in on just a basic understanding of like physiology as a science.
00:44:45
Emily Dow
It's a, it's a field of science. It's not really something that is, can, can be like opinionated you to an extent.
00:44:55
Emily Dow
Like,
00:44:55
Nathan Jenkins
Right.
00:44:56
Emily Dow
And it's so easy for people, both creators and ah people in the audience, to kind of like subscribe to certain camps of information and then commit to those and not necessarily have an understanding of the physiology that actually drives everything that we care about. So I think the the combating of ideologies is one central theme here.
00:45:19
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah, like, it's just science.
00:45:19
Emily Dow
um
00:45:21
Nathan Jenkins
It's not, it's not, it's ideology slash, like, even use the term religion. It's, it, nutrition, almost like, that this we're not the first to say that.
00:45:27
Emily Dow
Yeah.
00:45:32
Nathan Jenkins
We have heard that a lot. Like, nutrition kind of, like, and even fitness things can border on, like, religious
00:45:44
Nathan Jenkins
zeal. And we're not about that.
00:45:46
Emily Dow
Or like cults.
00:45:46
Nathan Jenkins
We're about science. Yeah. Cult.
00:45:48
Emily Dow
Like the CrossFit cult that you're a part of
00:45:48
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:45:50
Emily Dow
Also the fact that like
00:45:52
Nathan Jenkins
But you are too, goddammit. Sorry.
00:45:54
Emily Dow
I'm becoming one. i But then also like, helpful context, I don't, this isn't something I usually like advertise, but I, I also don't eat meat.
00:46:00
Nathan Jenkins
Yes.
00:46:05
Emily Dow
I'm a vegetarian. I only eat eggs. Like that's the only animal product that I consume. Whereas Nathan eats a lot of meat and we at the same time agree on 99% of concepts when it comes to nutrition and the way that we advise clients and athletes.
00:46:09
Nathan Jenkins
Right.
00:46:12
Nathan Jenkins
yeah
00:46:19
Nathan Jenkins
Sure.
00:46:22
Emily Dow
And so even though those seem like conflicting ideologies, quote unquote,
00:46:22
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:46:27
Emily Dow
There are ways to still like approach your personal choices without having to have that mentality towards it.
00:46:35
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah. Oh yeah. That's, and that's funny. You mentioned that because again, at the time of this recording, it was like, what are we a day or two? It was this week that you posted your last, i think it was your last reel.
00:46:46
Nathan Jenkins
That was like the grownup conversation about soy.
00:46:49
Emily Dow
Yeah.
00:46:49
Nathan Jenkins
And it was so funny. Cause then I opened my Instagram and saw that post. And not not five seconds before that, not knowing that you had posted that. I had done a DoorDash order for a burrito that was 50%. My go-to burrito order is soy or is tofu plus some animal protein. like I do a double protein because because gains.
00:47:14
Nathan Jenkins
ah But it's at that time, I think it was like tofu plus spicy chicken. And it was it was it was wonderful.
00:47:22
Emily Dow
Excellent decision.
00:47:24
Nathan Jenkins
it was delicious. And guess what? I haven't grown breasts since then, which is the concern.
00:47:29
Emily Dow
And I fucking wish I did.
00:47:30
Nathan Jenkins
Right.
00:47:32
Emily Dow
It's the other side note. Wouldn't that be nice if you could just eat a lot of tofu and, like, not have to get a boob job?
00:47:35
Nathan Jenkins
right And grow tits.
00:47:41
Emily Dow
Yeah. Amazing. i Yeah. Wouldn't that be nice? Never made that joke publicly, but here we go.
00:47:47
Nathan Jenkins
No, here we are. That's so that's the best.
00:47:50
Emily Dow
yeah
00:47:50
Nathan Jenkins
That is, here we are on long-form content with LabRat Radio, y'all.
00:47:55
Emily Dow
and doctor yeah Oh, God.
00:47:56
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah. Okay.
00:47:58
Emily Dow
Okay, we can move on.
00:47:59
Nathan Jenkins
Not an ideology. ah I'll do the next one. Okay.
00:48:04
Nathan Jenkins
ah
00:48:10
Nathan Jenkins
we are very motivated with this content that we put out, like I think individually and and now together to help our listeners become better that at at listening, at interpreting evidence, at um being better consumers of information, right?
00:48:33
Nathan Jenkins
So we're going to do a lot of, so we have we actually have a whole episode devoted to this concept. I think it's episode seven in the list that we have of like how to how to consume scientific content anywhere, but especially on social media.
00:48:51
Nathan Jenkins
um so but But also that's going to be embedded in every piece of content that you and I put out. and um I think that like right now as of right now, I think we've put out two of our collaborative posts, which I'm having so much fun with.
00:49:06
Nathan Jenkins
um And we have a third one in the hopper. It's going to come out here in the next few days or whatever. um In every single one of those posts, we decided as we were constructing the one that's still in draft form,
00:49:21
Nathan Jenkins
Every single one of those Instagram posts that we make together, the second slide is going to, the first slide is the title whatever the topic is. The second slide is going to be, hey, here's how we do things here. We're going to introduce this concept of this this term PMIDs. And most, many listeners will have, or and consumers of our content will have seen that that phrase in like a number, like this, I think a seven or so digit number, right?
00:49:43
Nathan Jenkins
Which is the PubMed ID, what what is the citation in the literature that the concept is based on? we are going to cite everything that we ever say.
00:49:55
Nathan Jenkins
Because we're mostly, again, we're not interested in ideology, we're just evidence, supposed evidence. um But like we're also gonna like, um I'm going on about that because we're gonna teach you how to consume that information.
00:50:07
Nathan Jenkins
What the hell is a PMID? We're gonna teach you that as you listen to our content.
00:50:10
Emily Dow
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:50:11
Nathan Jenkins
um we We are going to model exactly what we want our students to do in the university, which is to consume information intelligently and then interpret it from themselves.
00:50:25
Nathan Jenkins
And then, ah but then, okay, let's get into some of the mechanics of that too, which you're going to hear from us, which is to be able to distinguish things like association versus causality. um Mechanisms versus um Like, okay, you can get a mechanistic insight like into something really cool from a highly controlled mechanistic study, but does that mean an application to the real world necessarily? not Not always, actually not usually.
00:50:54
Emily Dow
Yeah.
00:50:54
Nathan Jenkins
um Things like effect sizes. Oh, this finding was statistically significant, but what was the magnitude of that effect? was it Is it actually meaningful for you and for your family and for your for your client? if you're A lot of your audience, Emily, I know is coaches.
00:51:12
Nathan Jenkins
um effect size is critical for that audience. is Okay, yes, it's significant, but how much? how like You know, okay, that kind of thing.
00:51:22
Nathan Jenkins
um
00:51:23
Emily Dow
or it's not significant, especially because in like our field, sample sizes are often really small.
00:51:23
Nathan Jenkins
Things like... ahead.
00:51:30
Emily Dow
And like sometimes you won't see a significant effect, but you will see a large effect size. And that can also sometimes be valuable.
00:51:38
Nathan Jenkins
Absolutely.
00:51:38
Emily Dow
Those distinctions.
00:51:40
Emily Dow
We're basically trying to like consolidate our research methodology. like We had to take a lot of this in an academic setting, and it's a lot of very, very specific skills that we've acquired, but we're going to try our best to teach you guys those skills in a compressed manner.
00:51:40
Nathan Jenkins
And when what...
00:51:56
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah. Teach you how to like, make like use, yeah, use them, use them in a, yeah yeah like, we don't expect anybody unless you're literally like in our, in our, like,
00:52:07
Nathan Jenkins
your student, like literally students in our institutions who are learning from us and mentored one-on-one with us to become like as well-versed in these things as we are. But like, like we want our audience ah to to like get pick up little nuggets here and there.
00:52:23
Nathan Jenkins
Like, oh okay, this this helps me. You know, I get questions from like even my friends, my neighbors, like I'll get, I'll get like, they'll send me something like a reel something that just seems like it's, it it seems like, oh wow, this seems like interesting, cool, but probably too good to be true.
00:52:40
Nathan Jenkins
I'm like, yeah, your instinct was correct. It's too good to be true. And let me tell you why. And it usually comes back to some of these like fundamental principles of like interpreting information, interpreting research.
00:52:51
Emily Dow
Yeah, and I think i can...
00:52:51
Nathan Jenkins
And then the last thing I'll say,
00:52:54
Emily Dow
Sorry, go ahead.
00:52:54
Nathan Jenkins
Go ahead.
00:52:56
Emily Dow
um I was going to say, I think I can speak for both of us when I say that we don't want you or any audience member of ours to like just take what we say as truth because they trust us, but rather to actually be able to I mean, at times, maybe even challenge what we, like our summaries, because ultimately science communication is always a game of telephone and we're always going to be communicating through like ideally very sheer like layers of biases, but we all have them. We can't avoid, you know, accidentally viewing things that way. And I think we both are very intentional about it, but we we want to promote like intelligent free thinkers and not just become,
00:53:41
Emily Dow
become your megaphone and you listen to what we say because we say it, but rather to actually be able to do that on your own whenever you want also.
00:53:49
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah, 100%. Yeah. um Yeah, I think that's pretty much the but the bottom line there is help our people, our lab rats become better at um filter. like Like let's, let's help our people build a filter, you know, develop a filter.
00:54:10
Nathan Jenkins
And that's, that's, I think that's a big skill. No, people are like lot of content out there on the internet is like, bu but like the information isn't probably the information is being bombarded.
00:54:21
Nathan Jenkins
Um, But no one is, I don't think anybody, I can say this with confidence. There isn't anybody like us out there that's helping their listeners develop a filter.
00:54:32
Nathan Jenkins
And that is huge. So that's what I love to do. okay what's our next what's our next principle or topic that...
00:54:39
Emily Dow
I think... yeah. So I think with all of that, because we've been talking a lot about like the quality of of these discussions and like the rigor of the science that we're going to be talking about, but at the same time,
00:54:56
Emily Dow
human beings are not, we're not existing in like controlled conditions. We all live very messy lives. And it's important to be able to, speaking to the filter thing, like also filter through what it makes sense to care about at what times and to not then like, because these, because these studies stated this conclusion, because
00:55:09
Nathan Jenkins
Thank
00:55:21
Emily Dow
this thing is determined to be important under these conditions, all of a sudden now adopt all of these new stressors and things that you have to worry about optimizing when it may or may not make sense in the context of your life.
00:55:34
Emily Dow
And that's also true for us. And I think both of us are willing to be very transparent. Like we don't engage people with these things perfectly either. Like I laugh at my own lunches all the time because sometimes I'm consuming a liquid diet and I bring a protein shake and like some juice and call it a day And I think it's important to be able to like have that.
00:55:43
Nathan Jenkins
No, yeah.
00:55:57
Emily Dow
Let's bring this back down to earth conversation also, not because
00:56:00
Nathan Jenkins
Sure, sure.
00:56:02
Emily Dow
I think sometimes it's frust it frustrates me when that is communicated as like, well, you're not high level enough to worry about these things, but rather, isn't it a relief that you don't have to worry about all these things all the time?
00:56:15
Emily Dow
Because what matters most is like these big picture priorities.
00:56:16
Nathan Jenkins
Isn't it big picture and like consistency and all that kind of stuff.
00:56:19
Emily Dow
um
00:56:22
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:56:24
Emily Dow
Yeah, we're big on like minimizing the stress involved in leading a healthy lifestyle because...
00:56:29
Nathan Jenkins
Uh huh.
00:56:32
Emily Dow
Yeah, part that's part of it to an extent. Like we'll talk a lot about like physiological physiological stressors as like a driver of adaptation and whatnot. But like, ultimately, it shouldn't be taking away from the quality of your life.
00:56:44
Emily Dow
And that's always going to lead to less sustainable behavior.
00:56:45
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:56:51
Nathan Jenkins
And we got a few other like kind of principles i think can come out organically as we like get into some episodes. But I think just let I'm looking at the time. We're like coming up on an hour in and we're gonna lose some folks if we're not careful.
00:57:03
Nathan Jenkins
um But we have two other things that I want to...
00:57:03
Emily Dow
Yep. Mm-hmm.
00:57:05
Nathan Jenkins
i think we should... didn free Feel free to redirect this as you see fit, Emily. But um let's talk about our concept of... like using case studies for each of our episodes. I want you to lead that.
00:57:22
Nathan Jenkins
And then maybe I can um give a quick rundown of like, or we can then we can tag team, I think, the just just specific topics for specific episodes that we have in the hopper here.
00:57:35
Emily Dow
Yeah, so I think like the concept of the case study is interesting for both of us because we like to teach this way. um And there's like data to support that this is a very effective model for teaching also because and I've even noticed this in like writing exam questions and like developing lectures, you might ask a question or expect an answer on this like specific topic.
00:57:43
Nathan Jenkins
Mm-hmm.
00:58:00
Emily Dow
And if you just ask that directly, a lot of the time there's like a somewhat clear answer or
00:58:04
Nathan Jenkins
100%.
00:58:05
Emily Dow
at least like a mostly correct answer that everyone would sort of like gravitate towards. But it gets so much more convoluted when you're like, well, I'm this kind of person, but I also have this going on.
00:58:16
Emily Dow
And then I also have this life context. And when you compile a lot of different variables, those answers become muddier and a little bit more vibes based. And you have to include, like incorporate so much more critical thinking and like decision making that,
00:58:26
Nathan Jenkins
hundred percent
00:58:34
Emily Dow
that's where people I think get stuck because they've got all this noise that it's like, well, because of this reason, I might make this decision, but because of this other thing, I might actually make this other other decision. so we're really big on introducing like avatars of people that hopefully you guys can relate to as ways of sort of like exemplifying the way that we would think through these scenarios to hopefully help you think through them in a clearer way as well.
00:58:54
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:59:00
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
00:59:07
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah. um Yeah, exactly. So like, yeah, we both, we both teach that way. In fact, for for myself in the, in the medical school, like it's all case-based learning.
00:59:18
Nathan Jenkins
um And um'm so, and I've done, I've done a ton of that stuff. Like when I taught in the university for the all those years, I did not exclusively case-based, but was very active learning.
00:59:32
Nathan Jenkins
focus, like I did something called the flipped classroom. Some of the listeners will maybe hear that cringe where that's where the professor gives all the content delivery outside of the classroom and you come to class and you're ready to like do things like case studies and, and, and active learning, uh, like group work and problem sets, quizzes, uh, a lot of discussion basically.
00:59:54
Nathan Jenkins
And we're kind of trying to model that, right? Like in a podcast form. And I feel like that's going to be unique as well.
00:59:59
Emily Dow
Mm-hmm.
01:00:01
Nathan Jenkins
And we're two uniquely qualified people to fricking do that. So I'm really excited about that. ah Just really quickly, I have, i have a like you said, like a quick avatar, like just to give the listeners an idea, like let's put some nuts and bolts to like give a quick example of that is you've got the smart, very like,
01:00:25
Nathan Jenkins
very invested fitness person. like late Listeners, if you're if like, just just hang with me here. See if any of this resonates with you, right? want you look deep inside yourself and hear if this is, this is speak to you at all.
01:00:38
Nathan Jenkins
A very ah smart health conscious person who's tracking all the things, sleep, macros, your HRV, daily steps, your training, readiness score.
01:00:48
Nathan Jenkins
You've got supplements laid out on the counter every morning. If you're a woman, you're tracking your cycle. And maybe even you've got a CGM, attach like ah like a little device attached your arm measuring glucoses. If you're doing all those things, that's a bit over the top. but like phil and like Most people who listen to this, or a lot of people listening to this, will be tracking some of these things, right?
01:01:10
Nathan Jenkins
but maybe are But the question is, are you actually healthier in proportion to the data that you're collecting? um that's that's the that's first question the second question is talk to me about your freaking your mental health your yeah in in proportion to the data that you're collecting as well um is there like is there anxiety are you being reactive to the number on your on that little tamagotchi on your wrist um are you getting blood work done every two to three months which i'm a big fan of blood work i've done quite a bit of
01:01:28
Emily Dow
Yeah.
01:01:44
Nathan Jenkins
of coaching based like labs based content, labs based, you know, coaching labs based like corrective measures for clients.
01:01:56
Nathan Jenkins
But still like if you're if you're collecting all this data and you're getting spun up with anxiety over it all, like how productive is it really? And so in that scenario, like the internet will tell you that your your your your heart is your cortisol is through the roof, your hormone, you're you're broken, your gut's inflamed.
01:02:14
Nathan Jenkins
Maybe you need a ah probiotic, right? Which I know that's a rage bait for you, right, Emily? um
01:02:19
Emily Dow
It sure is.
01:02:21
Nathan Jenkins
But our our take would be like, okay, maybe something's off, but like the bigger picture is there's just like a lot of disconnected data there and maybe not enough interpretation.
01:02:32
Nathan Jenkins
enough interpretation of like, let's slow down, just kind of take one thing at a time. um the Our concern, i would say, is like the panic related to all this and ah ah losing sight. like as We have the expertise at the level of like seven to eight layers of the onion deep.
01:02:53
Nathan Jenkins
But really, all we need to do is focus on like one or two layers deep, you know which is like, eat enough food, get enough sleep, Don't worry about becoming like fat adapted or whatever the fuck.
01:03:07
Nathan Jenkins
And
01:03:10
Nathan Jenkins
as much as we are out there on Instagram, like turn off your fucking phone and stop looking at reels, especially the React videos. Especially especially especially especially if someone's got a pc behind their name and they're doing just all they're doing is
01:03:17
Emily Dow
Yeah, especially everyone else's content.
01:03:28
Nathan Jenkins
that's a big red flag
01:03:29
Emily Dow
retweet word.
01:03:30
Nathan Jenkins
Right. um And being too hyper fixated on wearables, you know, like that, that's just kind of like, we're just kind of teeing up some concepts here that we're to dive into.
01:03:40
Nathan Jenkins
So yeah, I've got my, I've got like I've got my Garmin right here.
01:03:41
Emily Dow
Yeah. Because we're both obviously fans of data. Like, we collect a lot of this stuff for ourselves.
01:03:48
Nathan Jenkins
I love you to do.
01:03:49
Emily Dow
Right. But it's like, I, it's easy to, and it's, it's actually similar to science. Like, you measure enough shit you're going to see something.
01:04:00
Nathan Jenkins
You're going see something.
01:04:00
Emily Dow
Something's going to be weird.
01:04:01
Nathan Jenkins
That's right.
01:04:01
Emily Dow
You're like fishing for problems at a certain point.
01:04:03
Nathan Jenkins
It's a, it's a fishing classic fishing expedition, right?
01:04:06
Emily Dow
Classic phishing explanation, which we hate. And so, and I've seen like with clients as well, especially the really smart ones, especially the ones that love data, where it's like they see something that maybe like appears to be independently some sort of red flag.
01:04:23
Emily Dow
And then they change something based on that. But then this other thing is like moving and then they change something else based on that. And it's like all this noise is not actually informing like helpful decision making.
01:04:34
Emily Dow
It's just causing chaos.
01:04:34
Nathan Jenkins
Right.
01:04:35
Emily Dow
And then in reality, like a lot of the same solutions will solve all of those things at the same time if if we just committed to them.
01:04:43
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
01:04:44
Emily Dow
um And so I think being able to actually like understand why data points may be moving in certain directions when it makes sense to be concerned versus when it is just noise, that is a skill that it takes time to develop, but it's really important that we kind of set those examples up for people too.
01:04:46
Nathan Jenkins
That's right.
01:04:56
Nathan Jenkins
Right.
01:05:04
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah. Yeah. i'm I'm pumped about it, Emily. Like using that that that case-based model, like I just gave a very quick rundown of like a very broad case um that's like doing all the things. or
01:05:22
Nathan Jenkins
and But but i think I do think it would resonate, but like each each specific topic that we're going to have, we'll have a more specific endowed-in case that we, in each episode, we'll unpack. And then we also have two guests,
01:05:34
Nathan Jenkins
um Do want to do a name them yet or not yet
01:05:41
Emily Dow
we should We should leave them as surprises, I think.
01:05:45
Nathan Jenkins
or not yet? Okay, we leave our guests as surprises. We do have two guests that are, I think one of whom is confirmed. the second one may not know that they've been slated. May or I don't know that individual knows if they are, but one one for sure is confirmed. and I know that this artist will love that person.
01:06:07
Nathan Jenkins
um who You and I both know very well. um And we can, that'll be fun to unpack. But, and then i don't know, do we want, i looking at the list here. We've got like 10 episodes. do you want to go through them quick or do we want to just like save that, the specific topics that surprise us too?
01:06:30
Emily Dow
I think we can rapid-fire... We can rapid-fire the topics.
01:06:35
Nathan Jenkins
Okay.
01:06:35
Emily Dow
And obviously, like... we're going to get pretty in depth on all of these. So like the title may not necessarily give the full picture, but let's go ahead and just like, we can trade, we can trade off.
01:06:44
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
01:06:46
Nathan Jenkins
Okay. Yeah. Are you going first or am I? I'll go first.
01:06:52
Emily Dow
You go first.
01:06:52
Nathan Jenkins
Okay. So that then, okay, the we this is the intro episode, that but then the second one is going to be one of your favorite topics. Why am I the one saying this one? but fueling for For performance versus body composition, the big question with that one is, is it are those two the same thing are they different things?
01:07:11
Nathan Jenkins
um I think but the bottom line is our contention is that they're actually the same thing. If you feel for performance, to get fitter, to get stronger, eat enough food to get fitter, and whatever metric you want will give you the body composition the aesthetics that you want most of the time.
01:07:29
Nathan Jenkins
A lot more to say there, but that's the first one. Okay, what's the next one?
01:07:34
Emily Dow
Cortisol, not not not being a villain is is kind of like the central theme, but that'll that'll relate also to just like general, physi ah like the physiology of stress and the way that stressors are interpreted by the body, the way that they are signaled and like whether or not, like why this conversation surrounding cortisol, like maybe even begin in the first place, which parts of it are useful, which parts aren't.
01:07:48
Nathan Jenkins
Yep.
01:07:51
Nathan Jenkins
Mm-hmm.
01:08:02
Emily Dow
um And that will be applicable not just to cortisol, by the way, but to like the way the internet talks about all hormones and all little mechanisms. I think there will be valuable takeaways on that side too.
01:08:14
Nathan Jenkins
Yep. And yeah, we've got a post on that one. and We've got a post already out there on the next one, which is metabolic flexibility, um which is...
01:08:27
Nathan Jenkins
commonly presented as like, oh, metabolic flexibility just means that I can burn as much fat as like, I'm a fat burning machine, which I have done, you and I both have done a fair amount of work and done a lot of thinking on this topic metabolic flexibility. And that's really, it's all as frankly, it's incorrect.
01:08:45
Nathan Jenkins
um It's the question is, can your body use the right fuel, given the, the demands of the situation?
01:08:45
Emily Dow
Yeah.
01:08:55
Nathan Jenkins
And there are times, guess what? with There are times when that actually the answer is, hi the body needs to be bringing carbohydrate. Shocker, gonna rock some people's worlds.
01:09:06
Nathan Jenkins
You actually need to have the ability to increase your carbohydrate, um those like the intensity of that that which those coals are burning.
01:09:18
Nathan Jenkins
That's actually a big component of metabolic flexibility. And we're going to treat it holistically. This is less rapid fire. it it is fire, but it's not rapid.
01:09:26
Emily Dow
i
01:09:27
Nathan Jenkins
Let's keep going. Okay, that's number four. Let's keep going.
01:09:30
Emily Dow
ah Number five is going to be kind of all things gut health slash but microbiome, um which is honestly like that's going to be tough to consolidate, but we're going to do our best to sort of like clarify what gut health, gut health, very nebulous term, like actually refers to um when this is something that's worth like worrying about versus what you can just kind of do
01:09:30
Nathan Jenkins
This one's very you.
01:09:49
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
01:09:58
Emily Dow
to like exist normally, which you and I are both like fans of thinking about things that way, while also taking care of your gut.
01:10:02
Nathan Jenkins
a
01:10:05
Emily Dow
And then we can get into like some of the cool dynamics um with the gut and exercise, and like the gut and the brain, and all those different like signaling pathways that tie into it also.
01:10:16
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah, yeah, and the I'm super excited about that one because that's super Dr. Emily's wheelhouse, 100%. hundred percent Like, you literally did your dissertation on that. You're the house resident, like, expert on that. um Episode six is one we can't talk about yet.
01:10:35
Nathan Jenkins
That is guest Dr. Blah, blah, blah. um you We're going to... I think it's it fair to say, like, once that is... I think we can hype it as it gets closer, like, and name the individual, but just gonna dangle it out there right now.
01:10:51
Nathan Jenkins
Like, the people who listen, to who follow you, 100%, well, some percentage close to 100, it's maybe not 100, but, like, in the 80s and 90s, if they follow you, they also follow this person and love this individual.
01:11:04
Emily Dow
Her. We can say her. I'm comfortable with that.
01:11:06
Nathan Jenkins
Okay, so i was I was trying to be very...
01:11:09
Emily Dow
ah
01:11:09
Nathan Jenkins
Okay, it's so it's a woman.
01:11:10
Emily Dow
That's the care we can dangle.
01:11:10
Nathan Jenkins
ah
01:11:11
Emily Dow
Okay.
01:11:12
Nathan Jenkins
Okay. And who we in and the the real insiders will maybe know to what extent we both know this person, but that will come out in time. it's ah It's a rich history on but and in many ways.
01:11:25
Nathan Jenkins
And it is, um yeah, it's gonna be awesome. And I can't wait. and it's going to be That's probably gonna be a longish one, to be honest. like
01:11:34
Emily Dow
Now we might have to extend.
01:11:35
Nathan Jenkins
Because she this person is known to be verbose. oh She does talk fast, is we're giving hints now. um And also I can be really ver verbose and yeah, we it's going to be a YAP session as they say.
01:11:48
Emily Dow
We're yappers.
01:11:53
Nathan Jenkins
Okay, next one. How to, you know you you do i think it's your turn. Number seven.
01:11:58
Emily Dow
uh yeah so this this one we've been alluding to sort of like how to actually consume health content consciously so that it doesn't become something that negatively affects your health because you're obsessing over it or stressing over it or like scrolling through reels late at night and then sacrificing sleep which is one of the most important things so essentially like
01:12:01
Nathan Jenkins
YAP.
01:12:20
Nathan Jenkins
Spiraling with chat GPT. Yeah.
01:12:22
Emily Dow
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And, like, okay, red flags to look out for. Like, we'll talk about the PMIDs, like we were discussing, but even the fact that, like, people will use PMIDs and then if you actually check them, they might have been hallucinated by ChatGPT all along.
01:12:38
Nathan Jenkins
Oh God.
01:12:39
Emily Dow
So that happens all the time.
01:12:39
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
01:12:42
Emily Dow
um So we'll talk, we'll speak to like all those little nuances so that you guys can ideally feel more comfortable navigating the landscape of health content online.
01:12:53
Nathan Jenkins
yeah um the next one is the hormones episode which i think i i think it's fair to say that neither you nor i would proactively talk about this but it's just something we both we just get asked about all the time it's just answer it's like an faq like are my hormones what's gonna are really what's messing me up right um are the hormones the driver
01:12:55
Emily Dow
Back to you.
01:13:20
Nathan Jenkins
Are they the signal? Are they are they modifying things? We can color that in um with a whole hour-long discussion. So like you feel like if you feel like your body is broken because of your hormone hormones, you're going to want to listen to that episode.
01:13:31
Emily Dow
We sure can.
01:13:38
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah, ill I'll stop there because I could i could go on what about that. So next one.
01:13:43
Emily Dow
We will. Um, episode nine, we're not human fucking Tamagotchis. Um, so going to get really in the weeds of like tracking, um, in a way that is healthy and intentional and not something that's going to make you lose your mind or feel like you're a machine.
01:13:51
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
01:14:06
Emily Dow
and i think that will be particularly relevant to the type of person who gravitates towards our content because, We like the gadgets, we like the numbers, we like to, like, I have clients who have literally created their own graphs for data points.
01:14:23
Emily Dow
um And that's awesome.
01:14:24
Nathan Jenkins
Yep. Oh yeah. i've got it. So, oh God.
01:14:26
Emily Dow
Like, i I love you all. I love you. You're my people. But I've seen the consequences also. So we're going to speak to you those those nuances in great depth.
01:14:34
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
01:14:38
Nathan Jenkins
isn't Isn't it funny how like when you get an email with a freaking Google spreadsheet link and you're like, okay, I love this, but the anxiety, like for me as a coach, my anxiety like this spikes in a big way.
01:14:53
Nathan Jenkins
Like sympathetic activation in full force for sure. Yeah, that's basically our wearables.
01:14:57
Emily Dow
Yeah, it's like arousing in a couple of different, yeah, spreadsheets.
01:14:58
Nathan Jenkins
Wait,
01:15:03
Nathan Jenkins
wait what? Oh. ah Yeah, okay. So, yeah, it's yeah that's that's the wearables episode. And then the last one that we have on the on the docket is the second guest episode, which we cannot talk about. I guess we can say it's it's a heap. It's a man for that one. um
01:15:19
Emily Dow
That's a lot like less severe of a hint because there's so many male figures in this space.
01:15:19
Nathan Jenkins
I don't know. that
01:15:26
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah, oh, God. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. 70 80%, I would guess, are or dude, they're just like random, or the average white dudes with a podcast. How about that?
01:15:40
Nathan Jenkins
and So here I am as well.
01:15:40
Emily Dow
Yeah. yeah
01:15:42
Nathan Jenkins
But um yeah, this this individual who I have not met, I'm so excited to meet. I follow his content because of you, because you're connected with him and you introduced me to his to his Instagram, which is very, very, very, you know, it's one of those rare things where it's like scientifically,
01:16:05
Nathan Jenkins
deep and rich but also like there's a lot of really nice artwork and like it's just like there's like a cool aesthetic there and so it's great like that as as ah the educator and me like really loves that so um super excited to talk to this guy and get to know him a little bit and and share that information and then we also like okay that's mm-hmm
01:16:24
Emily Dow
Great educators. Yeah, and also like both of our guests, all of our guests, ideally, like great educators, even better humans. We're, you know, we we like for our network to be good people.
01:16:34
Nathan Jenkins
Right, right.
01:16:38
Nathan Jenkins
like good Good people.
01:16:38
Emily Dow
So yeah.
01:16:40
Nathan Jenkins
And then we also have like a couple other ideas for guests, depending depending, again, on the take rate and on the listenership and responses from you all. So. But yeah, OK, this is we're over like over an hour and 15 now, Emily.
01:16:57
Nathan Jenkins
Probably my fault. ah But like, how do we want to let's let's go ahead and wrap this up. um I'll just say as far as my part of wrapping it up is I'm just like really excited to be doing this in general, doing this with you, Emily, because I respect you so much as a, as a scientist, as a, as an educator, as as a communicator, I learn a lot from you all the time and it is a pleasure to be doing this. And I'm just super excited for our audience to hopefully get something positive, something good,
01:17:32
Nathan Jenkins
learn something from from this project. so
01:17:36
Emily Dow
Yeah. I mean, I echo that. I think there's, like, between us as professionals, there's a lot of mutual admiration. And i think, like... i definite like i For the listeners, there's no chance. You guys have sort of asked for longer form content from me. I love the idea of that. I've always wanted to deliver content in this way.
01:17:59
Emily Dow
i like consuming content in this way. I never would have done this if I hadn't been pushed by Nathan so we can thank him for the existence of this podcast to the extent that it's useful to many of you.
01:18:11
Emily Dow
um And I'm excited to also like kind of like my selfish plot also because I've learned so much from him is to also like expose all of you to his brain because I do think that um the way that you'll, you guys will see this firsthand, but like the way that Nathan can communicate about systems is like chef's kiss. And I learned a ton about the concepts and a ton about the approach to teaching from him. And I think you guys will really enjoy
01:18:43
Emily Dow
hopefully that collaborative effort on our part.
01:18:48
Nathan Jenkins
Well, gosh, Emily, you I'm embarrassed now. um
01:18:52
Emily Dow
That's how i felt earlier, so it's fine.
01:18:52
Nathan Jenkins
But thank you. Yeah, OK, we're trading. we We're catching strays is one term, but whatever the opposite of that is to equal and opposite, like in a good way, is what just happened.
01:19:04
Emily Dow
Yeah.
01:19:05
Nathan Jenkins
We're we're we're trading that with each other. OK, well, that's a great end to the first episode. Honestly, you guys, it's going to be probably an hour to an hour and a half of each of these.
01:19:17
Nathan Jenkins
um So just buckle up. get ah get you know get a Yeah, or or, you know, which is how you...
01:19:19
Emily Dow
listen on 1.2 speed or something. It'll be fine.
01:19:24
Nathan Jenkins
Actually, we can record on that, and like you do for your reels.
01:19:28
Emily Dow
ah Yeah.
01:19:28
Nathan Jenkins
That's the inside baseball that you record on one point something speed to get under three minutes. of ah
01:19:35
Emily Dow
Yep.
01:19:36
Nathan Jenkins
But, you know, you got to play the game. um But listen, yeah friends, if you guys are tired of content on the internet that Makes you feel like freaking anxious and confused or broken.
01:19:49
Nathan Jenkins
ah this is We're doing this for you guys. um And yeah, we hope you find this valuable.
01:20:00
Nathan Jenkins
Listen, like, subscribe, all that stuff. I've never said it before. Share it with a friend.
01:20:05
Emily Dow
I don't know what our call to actions are supposed to be.
01:20:08
Nathan Jenkins
Yeah.
01:20:09
Emily Dow
Talk about it.
01:20:09
