Speaker: It's bad to be bad It's bad to be bad And I guess it's understood That you would if you could And you know that you should Yes, you know that you should

Speaker: Hello, hello, hello. And welcome to your favorite bad movie podcast. The only podcast that dares to ask the question, if this movie's so bad, why do you like it so much? We're your hosts. My name is Chris Anderson with me. As always, I have my true and loyal friend, Greg bossy. Hello. And Anna is not here tonight. Unfortunately feeling a little under the weather prayers up to my lovely wife, Anna.

Speaker: But we do have a wonderful guest who you might know as the host of the gone, but not forgotten podcast, take a look around, or you might know him as the Australian correspondent of the gone, but not forgotten podcast, uncle must your spooky time fright hour. You might even know him as the man on the ones and twos when you're up all night in the greater Sydney broadcast area.

Speaker: It's Mr. Al Bates. Hello. It's good to be back. Or am I we're here for the first time? to be it's Good question. but Yes. Depart the kimono a little bit. ah We recorded this episode once before and due to a ah cascading series of technical snafus completely lost the recording. I'm going to put that one 99 % on me.

Speaker: But also, well, no, that's to I'm not going to to take it easy on myself. I'm an adult. I should be more forgiving and understanding of my own. Absolutely. I'm going to put this one forty nine percent on me. OK, that's more back. And this week we're going to be talking about the movie. So nice. We had to watch it twice. That's right. Ghoulies three ghoulies go to college. Mm hmm. Now, al this was technically your pick.

Speaker: Technically, yeah, um you you you presented a ah a um ah ah ah ah buffet of ah fantastic films and ah this one just jumped out at me. The but the premise of ah Anything going to college, I think this the the pursuit of knowledge is an admirable and honorable one. Yeah. And I think it's nice to see the Ghoulies bettering themselves. That's right. That's right. And ah hopefully, I mean, what was college debt like in the 90s? Because was college mostly free back? I don't I know in Australia it was pretty cheap, but it was certainly cheaper in the States at the time. Yeah.

Speaker: It was still, it was still aspirational. It was still ah largely thought of as, you know, your ticket to the middle class, but you could see the price tag starting to ramp up. Do you think the Ghoulies are still paying off their college loan? I can't imagine how they're not. Well, yeah, I don't think they've gotten much gainful employment, but maybe, hey, thanks to old Joe Brandon, they got some of that student loan forgiveness.

Speaker: o Now they can start up from the bottom. Okay. I'm going to cut all that out. So, uh, you, now you had never seen Ghoulies before. I'd never seen Ghoulies one or two. Uh, I feel like if you're going to start, if you're going to jump in on a franchise, people will say the first is often the best place to start. No, I disagree. Three, three is the magic number. ah No.

Speaker: I'm going to say that's true for Friday the 13th. I'm going to say that's true for Nightmare on Elm Street. Yeah, definitely. That is definitely a defensible position with proven antecedents. The Exorcist 3, pretty good third maybe. I don't know if it's the best one to start on. Not a crazy, not an Exorcist 3 thing. Halloween 3, if you just get it out of the way and they will be confused. That's fair. That's fair.

Speaker: i Tokyo Drift, actually the only one that you need to watch. And you should listen to our previous episode about Tokyo Drift. That's right. Star Wars Revenge of the Sith. Yes.

Speaker: ah Leprechaun. No, no, that's Leprechaun of Vegas. No, Leprechaun 4 is the best one. OK, Greg, you hadn't seen Ghoulies either. No, I had not seen Ghoulies, but I'd seen the poster in a lot of video stores as a child and dislike.

Speaker: At the time, it was like that in critters. You just see it and you just say, I don't know and puppet master. Those are like the three that like, when I was young, you'd see posters or like the video cassette tape. And I'm just like, no, I don't want that. I don't like that. Was it because you found it creepy or you found it distasteful?

Speaker: I think it was creepy. It was just one of the, so like, I remember seeing my friend's brother had like ah a door poster of alien from the aliens movie. And that really freaked me out. Cause like when you're like eight, that alien is so big to you. Like that freaked me out. These, I think they freaked me out a little bit. The puppet master one certainly did, but I think it was more just like,

Speaker: I don't it's just gross or so there was something about it. I was just like, no, no, this is the that repulsed me, perhaps is a way to say it. Fair enough. ah I had not seen Gooleys go to college either. I'd seen the trailer and that's why I suggested it to Al. It looked like one of the greatest trailers I had ever seen in my life.

Speaker: I should watch the trailer. You should. It's a lot better than the movie. I think it perfectly encapsulates the movie, but I think for a lot of people, they don't want that for 90 minutes. I do. I think it sustained it. But yeah, from our previous discussion, Al and Greg, neither of you cared for ghoulies. Not particularly. No, no, not not not not a lot. No.

Speaker: I was not crazy about it. And ah I did in like in retrospect, however, I did enjoy the like the whole setting of the the film has made me has kind of really overtaken Most of my memory of the movie so I kind of just remember more of the the animal house this of it like the prank contest and.

Speaker: ah but um No this was definitely. um you know, not in one of the worst movies I've seen. No, no, no. It was still pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty crummy. Neither of you come around at all anymore. Did, did both of you guys do a second watch? I know I did because I was very excited. I thought this was so, so what I did is I did some, ah so the work has been nightmarish for me. And so I got home and was like, God, I, because I was like Sunday night I'm watching a movie. What am I? I'm watching Ghoulies three again. Perfect. I was like, so I did some other stuff while I had it on.

Speaker: Okay. And, and then this morning to today, I've been like revisiting a few scenes that I wanted to go back and make sure that I actually like watched so that I could talk about them. Uh, and I found that I did warm a little bit to it when I was not paying as much attention. yeah And I, and I found that, um, by not looking at the visuals, I was able to pick up some of the banter of the ghoulies more and that endeared them to me slightly.

Speaker: That's fair. That's the thing. This is the first movie that they talk in. According to my wife, like i she had seen the Ghoulies, maybe the first and the second one, and had avoided the third because A, she'd heard it was terrible, and B, according to her, Ghoulies shouldn't be speaking. So that's why she avoided the third one until we watched it. Sure.

Speaker: ah But I can't imagine a world where the ghoulies don't talk. Yeah, it's really bizarre to me to think too, especially when someone's like, Ghoulies don't talk. It's like, what did they do then? yeah Like, what were they? What were they about?

Speaker: They gotta be wise crafting. Otherwise, there's really nothing else to them. I watched all four Ghoulies films, as far as my research, and I will say that they are they are not compelling. no They really are just sort of doofy looking puppets. I mean, they they work better as sculptures than as puppets. I think the real problem is that they don't move. If they were just going to be... static objects, I think they would play a lot better, but their faces have these sort of rictus expressions. um Also, like in the other Ghoulies movies, are they just kind of like agents of chaos like they are in this one? Well, ah we'll we'll get to that. I think that means it's just time for us to get into ah ah context. All right. Yeah. Let's do this.

Speaker: I wish I had some context About the background of the film Strictor of the actors on set What is going on on screen I wanna hear some details Cause I'm scared of all that shit Can't imagine all the time

Speaker: All right, Ghoulies 3, Ghoulies Go to College, came out in 1990. Your director was John Carl Beckler. um He spent most of his career as an effects artist and a makeup artist working on films like Reanimator. Classic. Yeah. ah The Garbage Pail Kids movie. You guys ever see that one? I have seen the other side of the movie.

Speaker: I think it suffers from the same problem of these very, uh, uh, static faces that look very unsettling. Uh, but he also was on, uh, nightmare on Elm street for the dream master. Lots of great stuff going on there. Uh, he designed the Ghoulies and, uh, was, uh, so he did effects on both Ghoulies one and two. ah He also did robot jocks.

Speaker: That's a classic rights to a golden movie. It's still going, isn't it? They directed it. I think so. Yes. You can hear us talking about robot. Jackson, episode six with Matt Finnegan. I think it was episode six. But yeah, love that movie. He also did effects on Tammy and the T -Rex. The Goldberg one. No, that was ah Simon Rex. I think Theodore Rex Theodore Rex. Yes.

Speaker: Sammy Rex was the guy from Red Rocket. Hang on. ah No, Tammy and the T -Rex, I think is Denise Richards. Oh, and it's like she like has a relationship with the T -Rex or something, right? Yeah, her boyfriend's brain gets put into a robotic T -Rex body. Yeah. Classic. Be there. That's right.

Speaker: Uh, he also, uh, directed, uh, Friday, the 13th part seven, the new blood. Okay. Don't remember that one. No, I don't either. Uh, he directed a segment of the anthology film, dungeon master. Okay. Oh yeah. I've seen that. Starred Richard mole. And he kept on, uh, calling the main character Excalibrate. yeah Yeah. Just a very fun word to say. Mm -hmm.

Speaker: And, uh, he also directed the original, uh, troll, uh, which last week's episode, which we haven't recorded yet, troll two, uh, the, the, the first one of those, although troll two was famous in no way related. ah Had you seen troll two before?

Speaker: I had but not in ages. That's a movie that like my childhood best friend Travis used to like have on DVD and would leave in like the um glove box of his car. So for like any time it was just like, I don't know what we should watch guys. Like if we're going to have a movie night or we're hanging out with people, Troll 2 would come out and it would be Troll 2 time.

Speaker: Yeah. Troll 2 has a real evangelical fan base. You got to give it up. yeah Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. So hopefully it I'm hopefully I didn't record any hot takes that show. You know me. But one ah one interesting thing about ah troll, the first one, which I watch for part of my research also for this rerecord, ah there's a painting in it and it's a painting of John Carl Buckler. And he has the fish gully sitting on his shoulder. Oh, wow. So that's kind of cool.

Speaker: That is cool. And also ah the little ah the boy character whose name is Harry Potter Jr. Perhaps. Yeah, I forgot about that. And the dad's like rocking out the blue cheer or something at some point, right? Yeah. And he's played by Michael Moriarty. Yeah. and Yeah. He's rocking to Ain't No Cure for the Summertime Blues. Yeah. Oh, that's a piece of shit. Yeah. Not a great movie. Good time, though.

Speaker: Oh, yeah. Especially if you want to hear people say Harry Potter over and over again when they don't know who Harry Potter is yet. Yeah. And it makes and he does become a wizard in the course of that movie, which makes me wonder. But obviously, yes, if there's any hate to be made there. John Karl Bichler would have made it. And yeah, I'm sure. Do you reckon he definitely would have tried, right? Yeah, he had to at least talk to somebody.

Speaker: So Ghoulies 3 is obviously the third of four Ghoulies movies. Each film had different producers, directors, writers and production companies. And so they're only sort of vaguely thematically tied. ah They both they all seem to just revolve around the concept of ghoulies. OK. Ghoulies is like a palette for you to use in your adventures.

Speaker: Yeah, it's like they're each given the prompt, Ghoulies, and they all just went from there. ah Now that said, on February 9th, 2024, director of Ghoulies, Luca Berkovici, and, or possibly Berkovici, in his writing partner, Jeffrey Levi, put out a press release announcing that they have regained the rights to Ghoulies. Ghoulies is coming home.

Speaker: Yeah, there's going to be a new film trilogy for a new generation. Oh, good. They're making three of them. I hope they go back to college. Yes, that definitely I would love to see a new generation of college. The ghoulies are on TikTok. Yeah, I was going to say, do you reckon like it'll be like a they'll be skewering Gen Z and they'll be like the woke ghoulie. You know, yeah, yeah. I want a ghoulie that uses a litter box.

Speaker: Whoa. like So just to put this within the context of the entire franchise, here's my little brief summaries on the other four ghoulies, the other three ghoulies rather. Now, the thing you have to recognize is that in each film, ah the ghoulies, there is also a dwarf in it. And if the dwarf is good or evil, there I came up with a little rubric that was like, hey Like if ah if the Ghoulies are in it no more, you are watching Ghoulies 4. Because the Ghoulies aren't in Ghoulies 4. What do you mean they're not in Ghoulies 4? Well, okay, I'm jumping ahead. Okay, Ghoulies 1.

Speaker: ah There's a college student who moves into a spooky old mansion he inherited from his father, who was a powerful Satan worshiping warlock that tried to sacrifice him at birth. He uses the magical texts that have been left around the mansion to summon the ghoulies, who menace him and his friends, who include a young Mariska Hargitay. So pretty straightforward. Very straightforward. Her mom was a powerful Satanist, right?

Speaker: Uh, who Mariska Hargitay is. Wasn't Jane Mansfield the Satanist? Probably. I, you can't prove that you wasn't, but I dunno, you, you got those strict Australian libel laws down there. If you want to go on the record, that's fine. That's true.

Speaker: don't want the man's field of state coming after. Ghoulies too. The ghoulies are stolen from some cultists by a priest. ah The ghoulies push him into a vat of acid and then run off to hide in the haunted house of a traveling carnival. They do end up improving the business by, ah you know, goosing up the haunted house. ah But at what cost? The cost is dead, people.

Speaker: I was going to say human life, probably. Yeah, they that's the cause. Well, they kill some people and then there are realistic bodies in the spook house and everybody wants tickets for that. That makes some sense, actually. That's actually an interesting idea. To have real dead bodies in your soul I mean, i in a movie, not in and not an actuality, but like a good plot for a movie. It's like they're awesome. It's like that's because they're real. I mean, that's pretty much what a House of Wax was about. Fair deuce.

Speaker: my um My ex -girlfriend's dad was the special effects artist on House of Wax, the 2005 one. Nice. That was made in Australia. um And he suffered like a severe nervous breakdown whilst making it and became like a super duper born again Christian. Oh wow. like The art that they're making me make is satanic. ah And yeah, went crazy. He did ghost ship as well. I don't know if you haven't seen ghost ship. I've heard that. Yeah, he did. Did he do that opening? Yeah, yeah. That was him. Oh, damn. Yeah, he's like a theme park designer.

Speaker: He's crazy. you know That seems like a much more wholesome line of work if you're looking to get out of the blood and guts. Yeah. yeah yeah So is he is he going to be helping ah bring back the Scooby -Doo coaster at at Movie World? I hope On our take a look around field trip, we went to Movie World at the Gold Coast and did the Scooby -Doo coaster and it was amazing. Nice. All right. Well, hopefully it comes on back.

Speaker: Ghoulies four. Now Jonathan Graves, who was the main character of Ghoulies one is back. However, the Ghoulies are not right. Jonathan Graves is back and he has joined the LAPD. He's investigating a series of crimes that are being committed by a sexy satanic cat burglar named Alexandra. That turns out to be his ex girlfriend from back when he was also a satanist and there are also a pair of evil, uh, dwarfs running around.

Speaker: And they're from hell, but they're like, but they're like the Ghoulies substitute. but Yeah. They're there instead of the Ghoulies. Okay. And I think their names were something like Saturday and robot. Wow. Uh, but I'd have to look it up to be sure that one was directed by, of course, big Jim Winorsky. Always excited to see something coming from big Jim.

Speaker: Uh, really quick, I have to go ah Google the name of those, uh, dwarfs. I will try to cut around this. It's crazy, but like these movies do not have their own Wikipedia articles. They don't. look I've looked, tried to look up ghoulies, uh, four and three on Wikipedia and you just get the ghoulies page. And then the sequels are just a ah subheading in the main ghoulies article.

Speaker: There's like a Ghoulies encyclopedia, but it's not available anymore. And I thought to myself, like, I would love, to I kind of love to have a copy of that in a way. Yeah. Like the ghoully is incyclopedia and Ghoulies Yeah. Yeah. yeah It's like I've seen one of them. It's terrible, but I know a lot about fish, googly. I've got the no one on Earth has a better resource about ghoulies than this. Unfortunately, ah the ah Wikipedia, the the credits only listed them as being ghoulies, light and ghoulies, dark. ah So it does not have ah their character names, but I know at least one of them was named Robot. Just bizarre.

Speaker: So for my last, uh, last bit of context. Oh, and you know what? I never gave our, well, I'll give our last bit of context and then I'll give our brief summary and then onto the po ah last bit of context, other horror comedies of 1990. You've got arachnophobia, bride of reanimator, dead man. Don't die. Franken hooker. Obviously the most direct comparison gremlins to the new batch.

Speaker: Hmm. Repossessed. Starring Leslie Nielsen and Linda Blair. Rockula, which is a wild movie and troll to same year. um Well, what a year. Arachnophobia was definitely a um video store poster that fucking. tell Oh, yeah may as a kid yeah yeah. Yeah, that was an all time poster. That one I had no trouble with. Interesting.

Speaker: Yeah, I didn't have a problem with spiders. I mean, it's not like I'm excited when I see a spider now, but I'm always just like, OK. Well, fair enough. Good for you, brother. I guess you guys, I'm not sure if you notice how good I am at transitions, but right now I'm Tristan. I'm transitioning over to the plot section of the show. It's going very smoothly.

Speaker: All right. So I forgot to give the big picture at the beginning, so I'm going to do that right now real quick. It's prank week. And professor Ragnar has had enough of the shenanigans. So he uses an evil comic book to summon the ghoulies to ramp up the prank war between skip Carter and his good frat, the beta Zeta thetas and Jeremy Heilman and the evil gammas. That's my big picture. Now let's get into some specifics, please.

Speaker: So we get a cold open of someone 21 years ago attempting to summon the ghoulies from out of a carved marble toilet before the ghoulies appear and then drag him into the toilet. Irony. Yeah.

Speaker: Uh, this is the first film famously where the ghoulies talk. And so they sort of mutter to each other, like Popeye, in part because their mouths don't move very well. It seems like maybe a lot of these jokes were written after, like they did. There was footage of the ghoulies moving around and we'll, we'll think of something recorded later. Um, so we cut to today.

Speaker: It's prank week. College kids are playing pranks on each other during the opening credits. I'd like to point out that we noticed prank week because someone announces that over the loudspeaker of the entire campus. And it's just like, by the way, it's prank week between the beta zeta thetas and the gammas. And I just remember thinking like, why are you announcing two fraternities having a prank war to everyone? Because it's a proud tradition of their college. I suppose. There's a crown and everything. It's interesting.

Speaker: And I love the setting of prank week for this movie. I think it's a really smart, fun play. Like, yes, you have to set this during prank week. That way the Ghoulies can just go crazy. Yeah. they do And they do. And everyone for a while, it's like these pranks getting out of hand. We're not suspecting anything to do with some kind of Ghoulie. No. Yeah. Yeah. It's the perfect cover for Ghoulies. The fog of war. Mm hmm.

Speaker: So we meet, uh, our frat brother named Wes who was pooping on the frats communal bathroom on this sort of thrown like toilet that they have, but never mentioned. It's got a bunch of, uh, like gargoyles carved into the side. It's definitely, it's definitely one of those toilets. Like if you saw it, you would talk about it. Like you'd be like, what's with this toilet? pretty crazy Yeah, it's, it's very noticeable. Yeah.

Speaker: Have you guys noticed the evil toilet in our communal bathroom? I did. Yeah. Yeah. I did see the evil toilet in there. The one with all the hands and the figures. Oh, thank God. I'm glad you brought it up. I've been dying for someone to bring up this evil toilet. You guys talking about the evil toilet? We sure are. I thought that was the only one that saw it. The the other thing about it clogs really easily. that Sure. that's old that's I think I've mentioned this before, but I think like one thing I hated about this movie is how toilet focused it was. Just like, I don't know. That's a part of the house that, you know,

Speaker: Call me old fashioned or a bit uptight, but that's that's a part of the house. You just never needs to be on camera. All right. You say that, but you also told us last time that you were here that you had a gully coming out of a toilet as your profile picture on America Online for several months. Yes, this you've got me here. oh Look, maybe my opinions on the toilet have a as ah as a source of humor have hardened.

Speaker: Yeah. Maybe you've changed. life definitely i hope That's fair. Uh, I didn't mind it so much. Uh, I think, I mean, it's not the kind of thing that I would like, right. But I think it works perfectly for like that explains to me why the ghoulies are in a frat comedy. That's where Ghoulies movies and frat comedy sort of meet is the intersection is that toilet. Do you know what I mean? Yeah, definitely. I guess that makes sense. Like you couldn't do Ghoulies go to college and they're at the frat without having the toilet there. People would be like, well, you know, I think it's the perfect center of the Venn diagram. Is the toilet in the other movies? Yes.

Speaker: There is, there is toilet iconography. But is it like the same haunted toilet? No, no. This is the first time when they're like, we should ramp it up. We should make the toilet like part of the cannon before it was just like, they would always come out of a toilet at some point. and we o two oh So this is the first altar like toilet. Yes. This is, this is a high thing interesting. Interesting.

Speaker: Because this is, you know, this is moving to comedy. And this is part of one of the things that I realized on my side. I only came to appreciate Ghoulies go to college more on my second watching. And I came to realize that what I like about it is that it's not like a parody of a frat movie with the Ghoulies in it. It's just a frat movie with the Ghoulies. in Yeah. No, I will agree with that.

Speaker: I think that that's kind of impressive and fun and to like pull that hard of a turn in tone in a franchise is really interesting to me. So it wasn't like comedy based before.

Speaker: Um, it was more horror. It leaned more into horror. Okay. Interesting. Especially part one. Ghoulies two was probably somewhere in between. And this was the first one that I would describe as predominantly comedy. Okay. ah So it's like a, it's like a evil dead style. Uh, you know, the first one's a horror movie. Your second one's a bit of in between and then the third movie straight comedy. Yeah, exactly. Horror elements. Hmm.

Speaker: And the other thing that I like about it, just while I'm defending Ghoulies three, before we get to any further, is that I like that it does a really good job of setting things up and paying them off. Sure. Everything is, everything you see is either a setup for something that's going to happen later or a payoff or something that happened before. It's just, it feels well executed. Check offs panty raid. Yeah, exactly. Like it was prank week. You knew there had to be a panty raid. Yeah.

Speaker: Uh, so, uh, let's see. Yeah. Wes finds in the walls of the bathroom, a, uh, comic book, the same comic book from the ah opening. He starts reading it and the alter toilet starts glowing. Uh, but he doesn't finish reading it. He has to go get involved in prank week. It's Frank week with the boy. Frank week. Yanks. He's got to do the yanks. Yanks. That's right. They do call pranks, yanks and pranks. They use the terms interchangeably for some reason.

Speaker: Now, uh, we joined the rest of his frat, the beta zeta thetas and their fearless leader, skip Carter, who is clearly just like they said, get me a James Spader type. And they sure got it. I mean, you just didn look yeah in look, not in any other way though. Not bringing that smoldering intensity.

Speaker: ah Now they're in a prank war against the snooty gammas. ah Skip baits the gammas into hitting their snooty professor, Quentin Ragnar, with a water balloon. Nothing gets water out. Yeah, I mean, this guy, he's so uptight. He hates prank week every year. He's had it.

Speaker: Yeah, he hates these frats and he's played by the great Kevin McCarthy, who really crushes this role. I feel like he's the perfect intersection of like factotum professor and evil warlock. Like once again, he hits that van diagram perfectly. Yeah. ah He lets skip in the game as president, Jeremy Heilman, one of the best names in film I've ever heard.

Speaker: know that he's done with their pranks. He's not the only one though. Skip's girlfriend. Aaron is tired of him ignoring her in favor of yanking with his buds. So tonight she's going out on a date with Heilman, but he's just as bad. It's true. It's true. But she doesn't know that cause he's got that clean cut look about him. He's a prep. Of course.

Speaker: It's weird to me though that she's like, I'm not going to get into this prank thing. So I'm dating the guy who's the head of the other fraternity. Like I'm moving from the leader of this fraternity to the leader of the other fraternity because I don't like pranks where they're both in a prank war. Yeah. Yeah. And I don't think how well we do later find out that she was explicitly doing that to make skip jealous. I did not catch them. No, it pays off. Yes. That is ah why she's doing it.

Speaker: And obviously with Heilman being Skip's greatest rival, what else would get under his skin more? new ah So we got to Ragnar's class where all the kids are sort of ah going absolutely apeshit. This is not so much pranks as it is just jumping around screaming. It seemed like a lot. It seemed like a high school classroom and not a college classroom to me.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. These kids, they were not taking this very seriously, but it is prank week. Especially like Wes, especially where it's just like you paid money to be here, right? Yeah. ah Ragnar ah sees Wes making out with his girlfriend, Ronnie, who is great and ah confiscates the ghoulish tales comic from Wes as punishment.

Speaker: We then sort of cross cut between the beta Zeta theta party and Ragnar's office as Ragnar investigates his comic and start sort of like, he's using the comic to summon the ghoulies. And Skip is fending off the campus security guard who sort of pops in and out through the rest of the movie being like out of the wall, but he doesn't really do much. He's got a golf cart or something he really loves a lot. Yeah, I think he called it like Bernadette.

Speaker: It's like Miss Betty or something. I can't remember. They get the blow up toll to drive it. Yeah. Yeah. ah He did say that it was painted ah honeymoon beige. Yeah. That was a great line. No, that is a good line. We also see ah Skip has sort of a right hand man that helps him get rid of the security guard. His name is Mookie. Mookie is sort of the Enki dude skips Gilgamesh. He's a little bit wilder, but he's got a lot of energy. He's really committed and he loves skip. He does a lot of face acting. Yeah. Yeah. He's great.

Speaker: Uh, you might know him. He was in, uh, the movie summer school, if you ever saw that. He looked so familiar. And that would, I saw that a long time ago, but I do remember that for some reason. Yeah. And he was also, he was in Heathers as, uh, Ram, one of the two football players that, uh, Christian Slater kills. Oh, yeah. I love my dead gay sons. Yeah. He was the dead gay son. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: Great. ah He fails to win back Aaron, however, who stops by the party and catches him ripping a ah mounted deer head off of a topless woman. From behind. Yeah, in a very, frankly, impractical position. ah So she ends up riding off with Heilman on the back of his teal scooter, who exits with the line Buenos Noches Skippy. No.

Speaker: Skip and the boys decide that, you know what? Now's the time to strike in the prank war. So they leave Wes and Ronnie behind. Wes and Ronnie are going to go have sex in Skip's room on his exercise equipment. Cause it appears that Ronnie has some sort of exercise equipment fetish. It's very bizarre. It's a very bizarre joke. And they make it a lot. Yeah. i feel like There's a lot of like, you get it. It's like, I don't know if I do get it actually. Yeah. You know what these chicks are like getting off on the crazy exercise machines.

Speaker: That's right. Yeah. It did give them some like fun physical bit. Oh, sure. Okay. We're going to use, how could we use the treadmill? Like it was a sex swing. Admittedly, like these two are maybe my favorite characters in the movie. Realistically.

Speaker: Ronnie's great. I love that. She's, I always love to see a horny woman on a movie. That's always fun for me. Uh, so skip and Mookie and the rest of the frat brothers who include, uh, Jason Scott Lee. He might know from dragon, the Bruce Lee story, Matthew Lillard in his film debut that's right and a ah big fat guy who rolls up an entire pizza into a cone and tries to eat it all at once. Yep.

Speaker: three equal levels of star power. Now, uh, Wes and Ronnie are too busy having sex and skips room to notice that, uh, Ragnar has completed, uh, summoning the ghoulies and the ghoulies are now sort of, uh, running around the house messing things up. Uh, Wes finally needs a refractory period. And so he goes to go hit the can where he gets killed by the ghoulies who stuff him down the toilet. Yeah.

Speaker: I feel like he had very real reactions to, but that's partially why I like Wes. He seems like a nice guy who has a really honest reactions to everything. Yeah, he did a good job. I like that he read comics. I liked that there were a bunch of comics used to set decoration around the beta zeta house because it's always fun to like see if you could spot a comic. Yeah, one that was like a Marvel two in one with the thing in the beyond or maybe nice.

Speaker: um But anyway, and the good news is for you fellas, I think that's the last time the toilet is just used for plot purposes for the next 40 minutes. Yep. I love it. Now, skip and Mookie prank Jeremy by tying his scooter to a dumpster in a way that when Jeremy leaves, he'll get a bunch of trash dumped on him. Classic prank. The Ghoulies then come and just completely destroy the scooter.

Speaker: Meanwhile, the Beta Zeta Thetas come back to find their house has been completely wrecked by the Ghoulies. The Ghoulies have also drank all their beer and Wes is missing. I hope it's like a whole bunch of 2001 Space Odyssey homages as well, right?

Speaker: with all yeah yeah interesting When they open the fridge, you get the like, bomb boom, boom, boom. Yeah. And then, uh, they come back and see all the beer. Yeah. They drank all 2001 of the beers to which skip replies. This means war. Uh, they, they assume that the game is kidnapped West. They're like, Oh, they kidnapped him last year.

Speaker: You know, apparently the interesting and the thing to to to little thing to drop in there. They kidnapped him last year. Yeah, he's yeah, it makes it see everything. It's all explained. It's all believable. This is a nice, tight little package. This movie. Mm hmm. Now, ah Skip asks Ronnie about Wes ah and her insatiable horniness leads to another sort of misunderstanding where ah Skip is sort of grabbing a topless woman from behind when Aaron walks in the room. Turns out Ronnie and Aaron are roommates. Aaron and Heilman accuse Skip of destroying Heilman's scooter. But Skip knows he didn't take it that far. And Skip accuses Heilman of ah wrecking their house. And Heilman says, we didn't do that. We were at our friend all night.

Speaker: So meanwhile, Ragnar has assembled the ghoulies, tells them he wants to rank up these pranks. Yeah. And he wants them to steal the pranking crown. He wants us to escalate so that he can get them all kicked out of school. And also he wants the pranking count crown, I think for his own perverse pleasures. He's also the Dean of Students, right? Yes. yeah Yes. The college has a very small faculty.

Speaker: Yeah. And do deans typically, are they typically professors? Are they what? Do they have to be right? Are deans professors or are they like principals where they don't actually have to like teach anything. They just keep it running. I bet. I bet that's something that could vary. I bet like maybe a dean could teach one class, you know. Sure. Okay. Keep a finger in the pie.

Speaker: i know And in charge of the Ghoulies because he's got the comic, right? that That's the... Yeah. Yeah, because he took the comic from Wes. Yeah. Now, ah Skip, meanwhile, is making very little headway with Aaron, ah but he does swing by and find her where else, but in the library.

Speaker: lord yeah making this, I want to say our eighth library so far in our podcast series. I need to go through and I need to keep a library account. You do actually. I'd be very curious. Yeah, I'm going to go back. and I'm going to do that after this episode, but, uh, he does run into Aaron at the library and says, uh, you know, Hey, uh, listen, let's start fresh. My name's skip Carter. He pulls that one and she's like, that's charming. Let's go out on a date.

Speaker: She says, OK, great. And you know what? I'm not even going to prank anymore. I'm done with pranking. I'm over it. And Aaron's like, great. Thumbs down to pranks. yeah And I wish Skip could just find someone that would love him for him, you know. Yeah, sure. Yeah. But that night is his man of his word. He doesn't even get involved in the panty. And he read it. Well,

Speaker: I mean, come on. When was the last time you guys saw a movie with a panty rates? It's been a very long time. Very, very, very damn long time. Well, that didn't win you over a good old fashioned panty raid. It certainly made me go. This is a weird thing. Like I don't. Yeah. We have that. I mean, we don't have the same kind of ah college culture in Australia. You know, like it's very rare that people stay on campus and whatnot or even. But but yeah, panty rating.

Speaker: Even just like single, ah single sex like, um, lodging, whatever. That's just not a thing here. When, where is the panty raid from? Is that just strictly from animal house? And it has just been.

Speaker: I did a little reading on it. It was apparently just a brief trend for like maybe one or two years and a handful of colleges in the late fifties. And then it died out almost instantly. Right. And then it became sort of like something that Animal House because Animal House was a period piece was made in the seventies, but it was about the fifties. So I think it became brought back into the the public consciousness that way. But it was never something that actually happened.

Speaker: in, in like people, I think when they're making a college movie are often. And you like you see it in horror movies, vampire movies, especially have these touchstones. You know, it's like, what what does it get in the vampire see its reflection. It's like, so you got a college prank movie. You got a panty raise. Of course we have a panty rate. Like yeah ah so that's one of the touchstones of the college prank movie because of animal house. I'm assuming.

Speaker: Yeah, I feel like having a Western and not having a shootout. Yeah, definitely. What's the worst thing that John Landis did? Like, do you think it's killing all those people on Twilight Zone or making Animal House and then inspiring like Brett Kavanaugh and like, you know, that whole wave of loutish, uh, drunken, you know, just like macho kind of, uh, ugly. Yeah.

Speaker: Boy, that is a tough call. I mean, I'll go with the deaths. I'm going to play. Yeah, very bad. I was really like, you know, killing people is worse than Animal House. I saw that he like, I read that he brought up to like Vic Mars funeral and it's like, I'm so like, v what a tragedy. It's like, that's what a fucking psycho. yeah Yeah, I can't imagine. I'm really glad I have never directed a film where someone has died, but I don't think I would do that.

Speaker: Yeah, totally. But um it is crazy, but like, like Animal House is like such a touchstone. I don't even know if it's a classic movie, but um it is it's so weird that there's so much like, it's like Wolf of Wall, like I worked at a bank when Wolf of Wall Street came out. I remember watching all of these dudes just being like, all right, we are taking the absolute wrong message from this movie and celebrating not just behavior instead of like,

Speaker: Obviously, Animal House is hilarious. ah And I, you know, as a teenager, I definitely watched it was like, all right, I want to be like these guys. But as you get older, I feel like the humor for me at least is seeing how obnoxious and unlikable these dudes are. I don't know what you're saying here. But anyway, sorry, we digress.

Speaker: Yeah, yeah. No, there are there are definitely a lot of people who will embrace style over the substance, you know? Yeah. And not not understand that. Al, I wish there was a way I could talk about it on this podcast in depth. But that did I ever tell you, speaking of animals, about a script that I found that was written by a teenage billionaire? No. Never told me about this.

Speaker: I cannot tell you about this. Listeners, if you want to hear about the script written by a teenage billionaire, I'm going to talk to Al about it off mic, but write in and tell us to set up a Patreon and we'll put it behind a paywall where hopefully the billionaire will never find me. Yeah, yeah. Fair call. Be careful with that. Yeah. No. ah Back to the panty raid. The ladies are prepared for a panty raid or so they think.

Speaker: ah They get peeped on by the betas, the security guard, and the ghoulies. yeah ah The betas make a break for a hamper full of panties at one point, ah but they get jumped by topless sorority sisters armed with downed pillows who beat them up and steal their underwear. Meanwhile, ah the ghoulies break into the sorority house shower and kill Ronnie with a plunger. RIP Ronnie, you hate to see it.

Speaker: yeah

Speaker: ah The next day, Erin is mad at Skip again, because while the Ghoulies were there, they also broke into Erin and Ronnie's underwear drawers and messed up all their underwear. And Erin is mad at Skip again, this time for not stopping the panty raid, which she thinks resulted in her losing literally hundreds of dollars worth of expensive bras and underwear.

Speaker: Uh, and, uh, skip is like, no, I didn't do that. And I told, I even told the boys to stay away. I said, your room was off limit. They can steal those other ladies under where I don't give a shit about them. They could all die in the street, Aaron. That's our skip. Uh, now on top of that skip now goes back to class back in old Ragnar's class. And this guy, he's gone around the bend a little bit at this point. I love him at this point.

Speaker: I think he just wrote on the blackboard, filling up the entire blackboard with the words evil and power. He certainly did do that. He certainly did do that. It's so good. Yeah. And it's just like to be powerful, you must be evil. And everyone's like, what is happening in this class? Yeah. Uh, and then, uh, Heilman frame skip for, uh, blowing up his desk with a small series of explosives.

Speaker: And skip, uh, Ragnar has had it up to here. He's like, this is clearly, I've got proof that you did it. Skip, you are expelled from school. You're out mister classic Dean stuff. And skip responds. Uh, nobody is going to deny me my future, which I love that line. Yeah. Such an important line for skip.

Speaker: totally And it really like unlocks that sort of, um, Ferris Bueller archetype, that sort of main character of these sort of eighties style comedies where he's like, I'm like clearly against the establishment, but I'm going to win anyway. I was born for victory. Like just this entitlement of this character that I think we don't see as much anymore. Cause it does feel very much like a white male entitlement. Oh yeah.

Speaker: Oh, yeah. Now, Skip goes back to the frat. The whole frat ah quit in solidarity with him. They're like, well, we're out of here, too. They all marched out of the class together singing beta, zeta, theta. And he tells the frat, though, that he's out of the prank war because he thinks something's going on. It's going too far. And also they all just got kicked out of school. And maybe that does mean that it is technically gone too far. Friends not happy with that.

Speaker: Yeah, Mookie is not happy to hear this at all. No. Mookie has dedicated his life to this prank war. He believed in one week long prank war. Yeah, this is what he looks forward to every year. This was his senior year was his last chance for the prank war. I'm assuming. I just say I didn't catch that part, actually. That's the vibe I'm getting. After this, he has to go back and work in his old man's shoe store. Yeah. Why would you go to college and then do that?

Speaker: Well, unfortunately, he got a degree in French poetry. He doesn't really know. Oh, yeah. okay know was Fair enough. I'm a humanities major as well. I definitely. right Yeah. might My bachelor of fine arts didn't do much for me. Now, ah none of this matters very much to Ragnar. He doesn't care that skips out of the prank war. He orders the ghoulies to kill Skip. He's really upset about this desk. He's not happy.

Speaker: But it's not all bad news for we'll skip. Uh, Aaron finds out that Heilman has been lying to her, that he has been involved in this prank stuff. She he said that he was not pranking. That was also why she was hanging.

Speaker: But he did the prank that got bit Skip expelled, and he won't own up to it. She's like, you need to go tell Ragnar you can't destroy Skip's life. And he's like, oh, I hate Skip. So the next thing we know, ah the two of them are back together, and Skip is using a dust buster on Aaron's nude body. Somehow. Yeah, in some way. It's under the sheets. It's very classy.

Speaker: Aaron, you don't see nude. Uh, now Aaron admits she heard Heilman admit that he was the one who blew up Ragnar's desk. So they go to Ragnar together skips, like obviously Ragnar won't believe me, but maybe he'll believe you. So they go to Ragnar's office to talk to him about it, but instead of finding him, they find a librarian who was strengthened to death with her own tongue in a, in a, in a, in a bizarre cartoonish murder.

Speaker: and Yeah, it's a cartoonish movie, but it's a it's a very it's like we're going to take that tongue and we're going to stretch it out to be about seven feet long. And then we're going to wrap it around you and strangle you with it. It's just like this is very weird to see someone do this practically.

Speaker: Yeah, it definitely reminded me. They did something very similar in Nightmare on Street three to the mute kid who got tied up on the bed with his own tongue or something. OK, I feel like there it's probably in a slightly different context. There's also the dream there. It was a dream. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So it's like wanky things can happen. And when admittedly the ghoulies are not very grounded, it's just very weird to be like, we're yanking that tongue out now. But there's also like moments where birds tweet when people are hit on the head. And it's very much a cartoon of a live action film. I think it's in keeping. And also, ah while the ghoulies were killing her, I noticed at this point, they're like, Oh, hey, isn't she famous? Oh, yeah, she's from this TV show. And I was wondering about that. It was Newhart, right?

Speaker: Yeah, yeah, she was from Newhart. R .I .P. Yeah, R .I .P. Bob Newhart, the legend. They ran away from the corpse, obviously kind of freaked out, but they only run to to Heilman the gammas. Heilman's goons grab Skip, but Erin escapes. Fortunately, she then almost immediately gets grabbed by Ragnar and the ghoulies. Skip hears Erin screaming in terror, so he beats up six gammas with his bare hands and runs off to save her.

Speaker: Uh, he finds Ragnar and the ghoulies holding Erin. Uh, she's tied to a table. Skip slows down the ghoulies with a squirt gun full of super glue that Mookie gave him earlier uha because Mookie's prank plan was to go, uh, squirt people in the face with super glue. I'm assuming, which seems, you don' really know I don't know what he was trying to do with the super glue. Whenever i someone shot at me with a squirt gun full of super glue, that's fucked up.

Speaker: Yeah. ah He and Ragnar fight, which allows Skip to grab the comic and Skip orders the ghoulies to kill Ragnar. Unfortunately, we've established previous in the film that if the ghoulies kill Ragnar as the one who summoned them, ah he will become some sort of super ghoulie with the powers of all the ghoulies combined. With all of their individual different powers. Yes, including ah being ghoulies. That's right.

Speaker: Fish and cat and rat and rat. Yeah. Which was your favorite Ghouli? Cat Cat Ghouli, number 13. Yeah, that one. Yeah, I got to go cat yeah because they were closed, too. I don't know if we mentioned that, but they were. They get close at some point. Yeah, they raid the frats closet and they all get little outfits. I love them when they're in the little outfits. The hat on the fish Ghouli is pretty solid. Yes. Yeah, he looks like um the guy from ACDC.

Speaker: yeah Yeah. Angus Young, who's from yeah the suburb that I live in? No, okay. That's right. Local boy it made good. Local boy made good, that's right. Yeah, i have I have nothing but love for ACTC. I know i know a lot of people aren't ACTC heads, but I will defend ACTC. I'm not into them. Two words. No offense to anyone. Fuck them. Okay. Come on. You got to open your heart to some work. They got something. Hope found heroes, bro.

Speaker: They got riffs that'll melt your face off, man. Come on. It's true. It's true. I'm but sorry. I was kind of surprised that it wasn't like a hip hop gooey, you know, like, cause I feel like like late, late eighties, early nineties was a time where everyone was inserting it. Yeah. Like I had at least one, like a bonic speaking hip hop gooey or something or other.

Speaker: Yeah, I was surprised that the closing credits was not a rap song about the Ghoulies. Yeah, exactly. That was a real missed opportunity. Yeah. ah The Ghoulies kill Ragnar, turning him into a pool of green slime. He then re -emerges as the giant Ghouli -Ragnar hybrid. I love this Ghouli a lot. Yeah. As depicted on the cover of the comic book. Mm -hmm.

Speaker: Yes. And the cover of the comic book comes alive and that's also really cool. And they're both like talking in sync, both the comic book and the Ragnar Ghouli. But Skip realizes what he needs to do is he flushes the comic book down the altar toilet, which sucks the mega Ragnar down with it. And he looks very much like a, like a Power Rangers villain. He has that kind of. Yeah.

Speaker: Uh, but he's gone now. He's flushed down back to hell with the coolies. Uh, Heilman breaks in and he's about to pick a fight with old skip when, uh, the security guard shows up and, uh, anyway, Heilman gets, he cut a school for blowing up the security guards, uh, golf cart earlier on. Mookie has won the pranking crown for beta zeta theta. The judges picked them.

Speaker: Yeah, I caught that this time. They're like, they they're like, they're like the judges decided it was us. It's like there are judges for this prank war. Yeah, it's got to be panels of alumni from both frats. I got a man probably had probably one independent. ah They all agree. I like how democratic you made it. We need one independent person for this prank war. Otherwise, it won't be fair. It wouldn't come on. greg Use your head. It's true.

Speaker: But yeah, they won they won the prank crown. So Skip gives Aaron a big old kiss and yells out, let's party. Roll credits. Yeah. Great final line for this film. The only final line this film could possibly have, I would say. What did you guys think of Ghoulie's three final thoughts? Give me your five stars.

Speaker: One star. I'm glad I watched it. I will probably never watch it again. Okay, fair enough. It ruled it like it sucked and it rocked. It's exactly what a movie like ah ah ah an ex goes to college movie should be. It has all the things you needed. um I think it'll be the only Ghoulies movie I watch. ah Yeah, but it's the only one you should. Yeah.

Speaker: But no, i I am passing like I watched a bunch of YouTube clips to to to refresh my memory and I definitely was like a lot. um

Speaker: I felt a lot more fondness towards the clips. You know, I think, I think as Greg said, if you're not giving it your whole attention, maybe if you're not looking at it directly, it's like enjoyable. Kind of like the sun, like sunshine is great, but staring at the sun is not a very nice explanation. Yeah. Like maybe you would not recommend Ghoulies 3, but you might recommend the Ghoulies 3 trailer. Yeah. Yeah, definitely.

Speaker: How about you, Greg? Five stars, final thoughts? Yeah, we're still going to go with one. I was contemplating one and a half, but we're still going to go with the one. I couldn't talk you up. I feel like, so this is the thing, like it's, it is relatively competent. Like there's a few cuts in the being where it's like, Oof, but generally it's put together. Well, everyone is committed. You're right. There's a lot of like set up and pay off. There's scenes where it's like, um, it feels a lot like.

Speaker: me saying, like, that's a really good and kind of perfect dad joke. Unfortunately, I hate dad jokes. And so it's it's what it is. Like, I can recognize that this is a thing that, like, is good for what it is trying to do. But at the same time, I don't understand why anyone is doing it in the first place.

Speaker: ah And so as for me, it just, it still sits at like a one. Uh, so it's just like, I could see someone enjoying it, but it's not you, but it's definitely not looking in a mirror when you see. new so And I'm certainly not. Well, first off, like I don't understand pranks like all my life. I've never, like I have a real problem with actual pranks. Uh, so when it was like prank week, it's like, I don't really understand what I'm, I don't know what my reaction is supposed to be. Am I for this? Am I against it?

Speaker: But that's probably looking into it a bit too much. Finally, someone's making a movie against pranks. That's right. I mean, you need to take a stand. Yeah. ah But yeah, like I could see someone liking this. I don't think it's that entertaining of a bad movie as far as bad movies go necessarily, you know. ah So it's hard for me to recommend in that way. Exactly. I think there's definitely an hour and a half you could spend watching a better, a better bad movie. Yeah, for sure.

Speaker: OK, it's no trolls to know. No, no, no, it's no. I would say it has the distinctly different flavor from. Yes. I think I said I might have said this last time, but like this whole movie made the 90s feel like 100 years ago and it was like very confronting that like I was alive when this movie was made, you know, like it's just like.

Speaker: You know when you like just think back to moments in the 90s and like obviously now you know it's it's 30 years since 94 like 30 years is a fucking long time man. but like yeah You feel that 30 years. Yeah definitely like. yeah Yeah, it's really, I mean, even now I feel like, like I say stuff from 2004. I'm just like, how did we do? How, why, were how are we living like this then? ya Yeah. But, uh, yeah, this made the nineties feel like it was a hundred years ago. Like yeah it was quite confronting in that regards. Well, I'm, I'm once again going to give this bad boy five stars.

Speaker: I love our disparities here. Yeah, no, you will not get me to back down and um I'll tell you why. I think it was very well constructed. Like I said, I think everything is set up in payoff and I think it does that very well. I think ah the cast was game and likable. I think the the blending of genres was formally interesting. Quentin Ragnar, Kevin McCarthy did a fantastic job. He did a good job. I think it.

Speaker: I think I'm able to appreciate the frat comedy in a sort of abstract sense. You know what I mean? Like almost like, uh, like there's almost like a comedy of manners or like a good vaudeville. You're like, aha, like I, I, I mostly appreciate how well constructed it is at what it's trying to do. Yeah.

Speaker: I would, I would also say that if there are two other things I know I don't like, it's vaudeville and and comedy of manners. So this still makes a lot of sense to me. No, I don't care for those things either, but I think I'm appreciating it that same sort of way and in a more like intellectually recognizing something as funny rather than laughing. Sure. But also at the same time, like that dude tried to shove an entire pizza in his mouth. That was funny. Come on.

Speaker: You know, there are there are some of the jokes that do hit, you know. And yeah, I and just the. ah I appreciate its sincerity. I appreciate that there's not an ounce of irony in it. i I will say I do. I do appreciate its earnestness like it is just trying to be this and it's not like making a parody. There's no wings to the audience. No. ah So.

Speaker: I guess we'll just all have to agree to disagree and it' f move on to the third act of the show. That's right. I'm transitioning to another segment again. You guys, are you ready? I am. Okay. Because it's time for the review review. Oh, yes.

Speaker: Review, Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review Review

Speaker: Review, review.

Speaker: I'm so excited to hear what other people have to say about this movie. Well, there was a pretty wide array of opinions in there. OK. I was able to break the larger trends down. Let me just really quick go to the sort of general rating for this. This one came out at smack dab in the middle at two point five across letterbox.

Speaker: okay That's pretty good. Yeah. Better than what you guys thought. Long legs are sitting on like a three, like ah a hard that' three. That's crazy. That's crazy. So you know, it's not far off. Yeah. So we got ah the first trend I noticed was a lot of people complaining that the Ghoulies can talk. That was a real deal breaker from them. Okay. My wife, one of those people.

Speaker: cinema void two stars whoever decides to make the ghoulies talk deserves to be chopped up and flushed down the toilet too dumb for adults too horny for children just right for Chris ah Z money gave it two stars ghoulies with all due respect shut the fuck up okay fucking hating the fact that people do not like that No, they are, Giallo gave it two stars. Pros, they got summoned up an ancient toilet by a comic book and drink beer. Cons, they all talk in this one. Real deal breaker. Okay. And last example of this trend, Ella, one half star, whoever decided to make the Ghoulies talk should be forced to watch the film Ghoulies go to college for the rest of their life. Was that my wife? Wow. Potentially be my wife's review of the movie.

Speaker: like Well, all right. Well, now I did find some people that loved it. Okay. So I had to put some of those in there. Michael gave it four out of five. The Ghoulies have no dicks. I like when the Ghoulies drink like a hundred beers and start farting. Who could answer more than that from a movie? William gave it three and a half. A Ghoulies boner comedy. What's not to love.

Speaker: And Klon, Klon wrote many reviews for Ghoulies three. I think Klon watches Ghoulies three a lot. Okay. They gave it five stars and wrote, uh, the last line in this movie is let's party five out of five stars. Couldn't agree more. Uh, let's see. Then here come the haters. I had to get some haters for you guys. Noah gave it a half a star.

Speaker: A children's movie with boobies. Okay. Fair enough. I don't know why you rated it solo. Sounds like you liked it. Artifice did not give a star rating, but simply wrote, can't overstate how fucking stupid this is. Okay.

Speaker: I mean, I think that's fair, but I don't know what you were expecting when you put in Ghoulies, go to college. Like, I feel like that's not a valid complaint. No, I feel like that's me. That's like taking a big bite of a lemon and be like, why is this so sour? Yeah. ah Mike gives it one star. The Ghoulies are slightly larger in this tedious sequel. I really, be tedious I really like that review. The Ghoulies are slightly larger.

Speaker: They are. It is, isn't it? Yeah. And last but not least, Jenny gave it four stars. I think the truest review of this film. Damn, those ghoulies sure did go to college. No doubt. yep So last up,

Speaker: next segment, you guys. God, I'm so good at transitioning between segments. It's time for two out of three are real.

Speaker: He's this guy He's that guy But there ain't no way he ever played the third guy I know how you feel How you feel But two out of three are real I said I know how you feel

Speaker: All right, so this two out of three are real and we're doing two truths and a lie with the filmography of Kevin McCarthy. Okay. ah Kevin McCarthy started working in the 40s, mostly in television. So I've got two out of three are real for decades of his film career. So I will just tell you the decade and I will tell you the title of the production. ah And you will let me know which one of them is not real. OK. So 1940s, we've got the Ford Theater Hour.

Speaker: the Marlboro theater presents or NBC repertory theater. Wow. I'm going to go with the NBC repertory theater being the fake one. Okay. Yeah, I'm going with that too. That's just what my gut said. Sorry. That was Marlboro theater presents. NBC repertory theater was real. Yeah. It seemed like too obvious a choice, but maybe that's why it worked, you know?

Speaker: Cause you know, like Marlboro and Ford, they're selling stuff, but that's like yeah why all those things existed, right? Like the. Yeah. They, they had just that straight up sponsorship right at the top. Yeah. All right. 1950s. I'm going to be honest with you. It might go a little bit like the forties, the Kellogg television play house, general electric theater, or the DuPont show with June Allison.

Speaker: What was the second one? General Electric Theater. That's my choice. Okay. I'm going to go with the Kellogg Playhouse. Al's got it. Al's got the first point. He's on the board. He's on the board. And God, this is the worst for you, Greg. Cause I think the last time when we recorded our lost episode, you almost ran the table. Yeah. I think I do remember that. 1960s. All right. You can still turn it around.

Speaker: The United States Steel Hour. Bob Hope presents the Chrysler Theater. Sorry, my cat is trying to climb on my computer. Or Campbell Soups presents the Great American Plays.

Speaker: I'm going to go with the American Steel Hour. I'm going to go with Campbell Soup. Greg, you're correct. There was no Campbell's soup presents the great American plays. It's tied up one to one. Okay. All right. The good news is we're out of that era of his career. There are no more such and such presents theater shows. We're now into his film era.

Speaker: nineteen seventy 1970s project to break light alien thunder or XO man. XO man sounds fake as hell.

Speaker: alien thunder. You're both wrong. Project break light was the made up. Interesting. XO man, I believe is about a school teacher that builds a robotic suit of armor. Cool. Okay. There's some sort of robotic suit of armor involved. Sounds great. All right. 1980s score is still tied one to one making of a male model. Once upon a Texas train.

Speaker: or dreaming of money. Oh God, these are all really good choices. ah Making of a male model. Okay. Ah, is the third one dream of money? Dreaming of money. We're going to go with that one, but I fear it's happened on a Texas train. No, it was dreaming of money. You've got it, Greg. Yes. Oh shit. Two to one.

Speaker: All right. It happened on the Texas train is just a really great title, though, by the way. I almost think that one just doesn't matter. It's great. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm very curious about Once Upon a Texas Train. Two more 1990s. The Two of Hearts. Elvis meets Nixon or the Rose and the Jackal.

Speaker: Two hearts.

Speaker: Uh,

Speaker: the rose and the Jackal. I'm sorry, Al. Greg's got it. It is two of hearts. And I know that Elvis met Nixon because I captioned a movie about that. So that could have been that movie or a different one, but it's a bizarre thing. I can only imagine them making so many movies about Elvis meeting Nixon. Yeah. They made a couple. They did that. There was that canceled one with um Kevin Spacey and Michael Shannon that never got released.

Speaker: Oh, OK. All right. God, I can't. Who plays which character? Yeah. and They should switch. Yeah, halfway through the movie. Yeah. Powerful. Really makes you think 2000s. All right. Last one. Let's see who's got the juice. The Legend of Razorback.

Speaker: Trail of the screaming forehead or run for your wife. Wow. Trail of the screaming forehead. I'm going to say run for your wife just just because. Greg, you've got it. It was run for your wife. You got intuition.

Speaker: Yeah, something clicked in there. I think it was after you told me I had nearly swept it last time. I was like, I really got to step up my game. Yeah, I got to walk the fuck in. Which is interesting because I'm not competitive. So I don't know how that happened. But here we are. Well, we got there. Congratulations to Greg. Good effort, Al. The good news is I'm now transitioning into the last segment of the show. It's time for the Batty Awards.

Speaker: Now you're messing with the Batty Awards. Now you're messing with the Batty Awards. Now you're messing with the Batty Awards. Now you're messing with the Batty Awards. Congratulations to all the nominees.

Speaker: That's right. Congratulations to all our nominees. Who wants to give out their Batty Award first? Should I start? Sure. Alright, don't mind if I do. I step up to the podium, envelope in hand. The award for the best thing to say to a girl you were hoping to hook up with before she got back with her ex when you see her in the hallway with him is, of course, what Jeremy Heilman says to Skip and Aaron. Well, well, look at the love turds.

Speaker: Such a good line. yeah Absolutely in love with that line. What about you, Greg? You got a baddie award? Yeah, I'm going to give my baddie award to best possible lecture, which is just evil and power.

Speaker: Oh, I love that cut when you cut to the chalkboard and it's just this insane scratch and chalk. It's just like evil and power. And he's like, you can't have power without evil. It's like, this is an incredible class. I would love to be in there that day. I would love to hear everything that he has to say. i Oh yeah. That'd be the day when I shut up and got out my notebook. How about you, Al? I got to give my Batty Award to the best tagline of the movie.

Speaker: Which is this film is out of the bowl and totally out of control.

Speaker: yeah That is good. It's true. yeah It's a good. It's a good summation of it too. I feel like. Yeah. Yeah. Boy. They really did go to college and they were out of the bowl and out of control. All of those things are accurate.

Speaker: Wow. Well, congratulations to all the winners of bad awards and congratulations to you listener for making it to the end of the episode. Oh my God. You're incredible. Al, thank you so much for coming back. Thank you for ah engaging with the movie. You hated at least twice. Oh dude, my pleasure. Don't you worry? No, you're the man we we love having you here. Just promise me that you'll come back and next time it'll be in a new year and you can pick the movie.
