Find your own pottery style right here on Shaping Your Pottery with Nick Torres. Let's get started. What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about the two phases of really pottery, which is work and play.
00:00:52
Speaker
You see, I just had a really great conversation with Crystal Nicholas. And in this conversation, I asked her the question, how do you prevent boredom with your pottery?

Work-Play Balance in Pottery

00:01:03
Speaker
Because boredom is really, really the kiss of death, as Amy Bremen says, it's, it's, it's really the thing that determines if you're going to be able to find your voice or not, if you can get through that boredom.
00:01:14
Speaker
And the thing that she was explaining was that she says she has two phases of her pottery. One is where she is strictly working where it's like not anything where she's really thinking about anything. She'll have a podcast on, she'll slap some music on, and she'll just make, right? She doesn't have to think about anything because she knows how to make it already.
00:01:35
Speaker
And then she has another phase where she doesn't have to do like, you know, she doesn't have to sell anything. She doesn't have to be like making things to try to sell where she's just specifically playing and she has to think and she has to be in that little mindset of thinking things through. And I think this is really beneficial to help you guys prevent that boredom so that you can find your voice or evolve it even further.

Strategies for Balancing Work and Play

00:02:00
Speaker
You see, oftentimes people only stick to one phase of their pottery. They only stick to the work phase and they keep on making that work and they keep on making and making and making and making and making, but they don't give themselves time to play, which is really, really important. You have to have the balance of those two phases. It's good to have that work phase where you're not thinking about anything and you're just specifically working.
00:02:24
Speaker
But it's even more important to have that experiment phase, that play phase, so that you can evolve your work even further. But how do you actually determine the two phases? How do you balance the two phases out? Well, here's a couple of ways that you can do that. So the first way, it is really, really simple. So let's say you are in the studio for an hour to three hours.
00:02:51
Speaker
During the first 10 minutes of your studio practice, you can set that time apart and all you're doing is just specifically experimenting on your pottery. The first 10, 20 minutes, all you're doing is just experimenting and you're trying to think of new ideas for your pottery. You can also do it at the end of your session, but I like to do it at the beginning
00:03:14
Speaker
because what this does is that you are more fresh rather than waiting to put it off at the end where you're ready to get off the wheel, you're ready to stop making pottery for that day, right? You're not as tired. So I like to do it before your throwing session, before you end your three hours, because you are more refreshed with it. And your ideas are probably gonna spark a little bit more.

Importance of Play in Pottery

00:03:37
Speaker
And a second way that you can really balance work and play is, you know, you have
00:03:43
Speaker
days it's called batching where you are maybe you are working five days out of the week in your studio and then you schedule one day a week where you are just only playing you're only having that phase where you're playing you know you have
00:04:00
Speaker
the first five days, and then you have that sixth day for play, and then you have that seventh day for rest. And I think this is a really great way as well because you can have that full day of just playing and really thinking things out, you're trying to experiment more, you're trying to involve your pottery, simply by blocking off that last sixth day, then you can have the rest of the five days for work, for working on your own pottery that you know that it's selling well.
00:04:26
Speaker
But you know, the only way to prevent boredom is to continuously play and try to evolve your work and continue growing as a potter. That's why it's important to balance those two phases, work and play.
