Donald Glenn: Well, hello there, folks. It's been a long time. This is your old Uncle Don. Talking sports with Uncle Don. I am back. And a long, lengthy layoff. I apologize for that. but I had some health issues. ah Ended up. ah Having some, uh...
Donald Glenn: chest pains and uh they did some a couple three four weeks worth of testing and found some blocked arteries uh Led to a four -way bypass heart surgery on April 29th. But I'm recovering well, feeling really good. We're ready to get back into this.

Donald Glenn: So what shall we talk about? Well... ah I think what we've I've done over the last couple years. I think I'm going to kind of go back to an old format I used to use, which is I'm going to pick up. I'm going to do.
Donald Glenn: Um... a couple of sports topics. um, that are Seasonal reason.
Donald Glenn: Not regional, but seasonal and in the news. And then I'm going to do one segment ah that's kind of dedicated to college sports. Not going to delve too much into that at any point in time because I don't want to take away from the NCAA report with Uncle Don and Crum. I got a new coach for that this season. You guys need to check that out.
Donald Glenn: So I haven't done much NFL over the last few years because, well, quite frankly. I just. Kind of lost interest in the NFL. I mean, I still follow. I mean. A few years ago, I used to be in five. four or five different fantasy leagues. I really kind of lost ah the the feel for it, lost the feel for for the NFL in general.
Donald Glenn: and so you know it's been um Been a while, so I'm going to try and get back into it. So we're going to start this. ah episode.
Donald Glenn: of Talking Sports with Uncle Don. We're going to talk a little NFL. So one thing going into this season that I was paying attention to was that you know everybody was thinking this was going to be a wide -open race for the NFL. ah ah Super Bowl title, if you will. And ah you know the the normal suspects were there, the Kansas City, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Denver.
Donald Glenn: Green Bay. Seattle. ah Detroit, Chicago, all were. in various forms of interest as far as the possibility where they could be.
Donald Glenn: Uh, And now two weeks in, there's a lot that's shaped up. ah even though we are only two games in. There's a lot of ah things going on that are going to shape the rest of the season, really.
Donald Glenn: Um, Going back to week one, we saw a record of 791 points over 16 NFL and most in NFL history. Uh, surprising, uh,
Donald Glenn: Uh... Week two, we had three key quarterback injuries. Now, a couple of them aren't that serious, but one is. Or, well... Two are very serious. One may not be that serious.
Donald Glenn: Um, back Going back to week one, with all those points being scored, you had... a Number of quarterbacks had just. Fantastic games. Tyler Slough.
Donald Glenn: Ciao. of the Saints, passed for 410 yards with three touchdowns. He wasn't the only quarterback to throw for three touchdowns in week one, as Jalen Hurts, Jackson Dart, f Brock Purdy, Bryce Young. And Carson Wentz all through three touchdown passes. Wentz actually threw his three in a backup role. And we'll get to that here shortly.
Donald Glenn: Um... Then Trevor Lawrence, not to be outdone, threw four touchdown passes in week one. Austin Gentry of the Raiders.
Donald Glenn: Had a. ah uh, field day with 102 rushing yards along with six interceptions for 45 yards and two touchdowns. The usual teams were showing up with their dominance. a Kansas City, a 20 -point win over Denver. Ravens, 18 -point win over the Colts.
Donald Glenn: ah The Bills won on the road with 334 yards and two TDs, courtesy of Josh Allen. ah josh allen you know this is this the year that the bills are gonna Finally, hit pay dirt.
Donald Glenn: I don't know. We'll see. They look really good ah They had a handful of early. First week division matchups, Packers. ah And the Vikings hooked up. Vikings won that one 39 -22. Chiefs beat the Broncos 31 -10.
Donald Glenn: The Eagles beat the Commanders 24 -22, and that took some last -minute heroics by Jalen Hurts. Giants took care of the Cowboys 28 -20, and the Rams beat the 49ers 47 -7. That was all in week one.
Donald Glenn: a Week two. Um, The Panthers had back to back weeks of 30 points. They lost. um in the their first contest to...
Donald Glenn: I believe it was, and I'll find that in a second. Aww.
Donald Glenn: I can't. The Bears, that's right. They lost to the Bears in week one. Bears put up 59 points to the... um 37 for the Panthers. And in...
Donald Glenn: Week two. Um, they put the uh uh
Donald Glenn: Panthers put up 34. points in a win. Against the brow, or excuse me, against... They play the Browns this week. Come on.
Donald Glenn: There we go. against Atlanta. um making Atlanta 0 -2. Atlanta's got to have right now, I think. You have one of the.
Donald Glenn: biggest hills to climb as a football team going in. ah Then you had ah the Rams. Took down the Giants 28 -6 after the Giants had put up 28 points against the Cowboys a week prior.
Donald Glenn: But in that game, they the Giants lost Jackson Dart on the first series. What they thought initially was a sprained knee turned out to be a torn MCL, torn PCL, and meniscus damage. He was set to have season -ending surgery.
Donald Glenn: But there is optimis ah optimism if... the if the Giants make the playoffs, that he could. Possibly. be available for the playoffs. Um... in Also in week two, quarterback going quarterbacks went in. Caleb Williams suffered a right hamstring injury.
Donald Glenn: In the. Game against. Um,
Donald Glenn: Man, I hate it when I lose Vikings. Yeah. they ah And then the backup quarterback suffered a concussion. So right now they do not they don't have an idea who is quarter going to be the quarterback for week three. ah The hamstring injury is not quite as severe as they were thinking.
Donald Glenn: but It still could keep Williams out for a couple weeks. Badgent, Tyson Badgent. Back up. If he passes percussion ah con concussion protocol, he might be available. um So they may end up going to third string.
Donald Glenn: um And that that that could be that could be some kind of a disaster for for the Bears, at least in week three. After that, who knows what their situation is going to be. But, you know, it's a...
Donald Glenn: That's the one thing. You get key injuries early in the season, and it it can become a... Quite a pain in the butt, I'll tell you that. Um, Washington also lost Jaden Daniels at the end of the first half against Dallas.
Donald Glenn: He could be out. six to eight weeks for re -injuring that dislocated elbow he had earlier. uh I saw the play. He kind of landed awkward on his...
Donald Glenn: elbow. And so that's possibly that the possibly out that's another six weeks. Um, One interesting thing I've noticed looking at the standings is.
Donald Glenn: Only one team in AFC South. has won a game. That's Jacksonville. They're sitting at 1 -1, while Tennessee, Houston, and Indy are all 0 -2. we'll Put that one in your pipe and smoke it if you want to figure it out. The Chiefs in the week two needed overtime to take down the Colts 33 -30.
Donald Glenn: um, bills and the Ram or the lions hooked up. And, uh, it was a. aerial assault on both sides.
Donald Glenn: Um... Jared Goff. threw for, it was 28, 26 of 38 for 237 yards, four touchdowns. Josh Allen was 20 of 31. For 248 and three touchdowns, the Bills won that game 41 -31.
Donald Glenn: ah Seattle's fourth -year receiver, Jackson Smith, and I don't i apologize if I mispronounce his last name. Uh, Injuba. In...
Donald Glenn: In Jeeba, I think. I don't know. Uh... N -J -I -G -B -A had a big day, nine catches, 155 and three scores.
Donald Glenn: So far this season, he's got 17 total receptions for 277 yards and four touchdowns. This upcoming week three is going to show a couple of good games. ah And you're going to see Carolina at Cleveland.
Donald Glenn: ah which I think that ought to be a pretty good game. Cincinnati -Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh under new coach Mike McCarthy. And that was something I hadn't realized. ah ah Mike McCarthy is only the. Fourth.
Donald Glenn: Coach. for Pittsburgh in the since
Donald Glenn: Yeah. That's, I mean, that that that shows you. Bye. They get a lot of good coaches over there. I mean, you've got Chuck Knoll. um uh, Bill Cowher.
Donald Glenn: And. um Um, Oh, I can't think of the guy – the recent coach's name. He's an analyst now for – one of the met One of the networks. um But.
Donald Glenn: You know, you... you you They're in our – only their fourth. That was just, I thought, an interesting thing. Las Vegas is going to be at New Orleans. That ought to be a very good game. of Vegas is really playing well.
Donald Glenn: New England at Jacksonville, a couple of one -on -one teams hooking up, but I think those teams are actually better than what their records are showing. So we're going to see about that game. Um, And depending on who's at quarterback, the Bears host the Eagles, and that could be a fun matchup. You know, again, if if Williams is able to play. um you know They may have to. scale him back a little bit to protect his hamstring. ah But we'll have to see how that one plays out. But the Bears' defense is still pretty good.
Donald Glenn: And so Hurts is going to have a rough road against the Bears. This is where the the Bears' offense can do anything with it. Uh, let's kind of, I want to go to switch to baseball here in a few, in for a little bit. Uh, but before that, I want to talk about, uh.

Donald Glenn: All right. So let's talk a little baseball. Um, Playoff picture is. Pretty much set. I mean, almost set. The NL more than the AL, though. In the National League, the Dodgers, Braves, and Brewers of all clinched division titles.
Donald Glenn: You've got the Cubs, Phillies, and Padres are are pretty much in a three -way tie for the wild card with the Arizona Diamondbacks looking for somebody to make a mistake so they can slide right in there.
Donald Glenn: Now, over on the junior circuit, only Tampa Bay has clinched a division title. and the Yankees and Red Sox have clinched wildcard berths. So that's all in one division. uh in the night in the american league uh east in the american league central the guardians of white socks are still trying to figure who wants that crown With the loser probably having a leg up on the third wild card.
Donald Glenn: Um, In the. uh, AL West, the as Astros and Rangers were kind to battling it out. Both of those teams, and this is very interesting.
Donald Glenn: There's not a team in the AL West with a winning. Record. Let that one sink in. No team in the AL West Has a.
Donald Glenn: better than 500 record they're both they're both sub 5 everybody is sub 500. including the two people that are leading. and and two And two of them have been eliminated from the playoffs. That tells you how bad the AL West is.
Donald Glenn: So if you ask me right now, looking at that, I mean, I've kind of been out of the loop on baseball a little bit. I've been kind of concentrating more on college sports. ah but you know You look at it and...
Donald Glenn: i just I just don't see a way. ah Other than maybe... Tampa Bay. that really... is going to...
Donald Glenn: i I think have a good shot at the. ah um the World Series title. I think in the National League, it can be any one of the three division winners. i think uh l LA, Milwaukee, and...
Donald Glenn: Um, Atlanta. I think every any any one of those three could be the next World Series champion out of the National League. Um,
Donald Glenn: I think that's... ah That's a kind of a given I mean it's It just doesn't seem like. ah ah The other team, i you know, the Cubs are good. Don't don't get me wrong.
Donald Glenn: You know, um the Phillies have played very well. yeah The Diamondbacks are are said they're waiting for their turn. The Padres are still good. but I just don't think any one of those four teams.
Donald Glenn: are um You know. going to be able to take out the top three. So we'll have to see. how that actually plays out.
Donald Glenn: A couple of bracketologies, kind of. bear that out. um With ah the Brewers facing the...
Donald Glenn: Uh, Houston, they got brewers facing.
Donald Glenn: I got to look. at this here. I got to enlarge this so I can see what I'm looking at. Boston. And I don't see I mean, Boston could. I don't see it myself, but I think Boston, you know, Boston. they've got the ability. It's whether they can make, they can make it through the wild card round. Cause they'll probably have to face either the Yankees.
Donald Glenn: Um, And then Tampa Bay right away. And that may just be the killer right there for it. Um, A couple other things going on in MLB.
Donald Glenn: ah You know, there's a couple teams, and you guys know I'm a big Cardinal fan. And. ah You know, they've they've got like a couple other teams. they've They're in their rebuilds.
Donald Glenn: But. you know There was some. light there at the end of the tunnel. And, you know, just hope it's not an oncoming train for both teams, really. Not both teams, for the Cardinals and the Nationals. ah they're They're also in the middle of a rebuild.
Donald Glenn: And, um you know, you you want to think about ways that they might be able to. Oh. speed up the process a little bit. As the Cardinals have went through a lot of ah youngsters this season, so have the Nationals.
Donald Glenn: Um, you know So a lot of those kids have... Got some good exposure. You might be able to package a few of those kids for her. uh uh uh veteran that you might need to solidify the lineup.
Donald Glenn: Um... or some pitching or, you know, whatever the case may be. I think. ah Both teams have ah have Pretty good. options in that respect. I think another team, if you want to look at...
Donald Glenn: a team that might have some up -and -coming... abilities over the next couple of years. i think you I think you can look at in the National League for sure.
Donald Glenn: And. um
Donald Glenn: That would be... you know, whatever it was. Oh, there we go. I went the wrong way. That's why I think Miami is making some inroads. as well.
Donald Glenn: ah Pittsburgh kind of showed up a little bit this year, this season. ah Cincinnati's kind of taking a backslide. Um... The Mets have just gone into, them I mean, the Mets have become the biggest dumpster fire in the National League.
Donald Glenn: uh Huge, huge payroll and getting. Nothing. out of it And I mean absolutely nothing. Um, like i said american league i i just don't know how to figure that american league right now I mean...
Donald Glenn: You've got just a handful of teams. That. Um, ah right now there's what, so five, five teams. Five teams. is all you have in the American League with winning records.
Donald Glenn: Five. That's it. Over in the National League. You've got five, six, seven, eight. You've got eight teams internationally with winning records.
Donald Glenn: Um, Another team that I think is is is kind of mired themselves. in. uh, dismal perpetuity, if you will, is Colorado first. They just have never been able to add a couple of good years there.
Donald Glenn: ah Early 2000. And then they just ever since they've just been. They've been an also -ran. and ah You know. you stop and think at some of their their players and And that have left and. They.
Donald Glenn: actually not done that well outside of but Of, uh... the Denver, the mile high city. So. uh it It's a...
Donald Glenn: You know, it's it's an interesting thing and over over in MLB. Peace. So. There's that. All right, ah moving right along.
Donald Glenn: uh, Let's talk a little college football. Like I said, i don't I'm not going to talk a whole lot in specifics about college about games or anything. I'm going to leave that to...

Donald Glenn: so ah But I'll do it. We're three weeks in and. man there's been some crazy stuff going in the ncaa you had the first week uh the Michigan, Western Michigan fiasco.
Donald Glenn: which... Now the NCAA has come out and said. publicly. That the Big Ten and what happened in that game, the Big Ten, that they.
Donald Glenn: um Did not follow protocol. So that that last play that they actually gave Michigan should not have been allowed. But yet they were not going to reverse the decision of the contest.
Donald Glenn: And for whatever reason, I have no clue. They can. There was nothing that happened after it. It's not like it was going to. that there was other parts of the game that was going to change. It was the end of the game. And if they did it wrong, I have no idea why the NCAA doesn't put their foot down and just say, hey. You screwed up. Michigan lost. Deal with it.
Donald Glenn: Um, Other than the fact that the NCAA is a gutless organization and it cannot stand up to the power for conferences. End of story.
Donald Glenn: Uh... Then there is the... Crazy. Idea. that guys who have signed pro contracts And got cut.
Donald Glenn: can come back and play college ball. ah Now, this all started because of the five -year rule, which states you have five years of eligibility. uh which basically is gets rid of red shirting it gets rid of special um uh, how you want to call it special, special, uh, uh, considerations, uh, anything like that, that that's all done. Medical red shirts are done.
Donald Glenn: Uh, you got five years. That's it done out of the, out of here. Now... What it also states. is that. Basically if you... Anybody that has already completed their four years is not eligible for the five -year rule.
Donald Glenn: The five -year rule also is start of the academic year after the athlete's 19th birthday. If they turn 19 before September 1st. Uh, Now, if or on after September 1st, then it's the next academic year unless they enroll earlier.
Donald Glenn: So what it really means is the nickname is five and five. So it's five seasons in five years. That's misleading. Not everybody's going to get fat. Get that. If you enroll straight out of high school at 18, You might get five seasons.
Donald Glenn: If you delay your enrollment, take a gap year. you're not going to get it. You're only going to get maybe four. So. Now, the only exceptions to this rule are military.
Donald Glenn: service, religious missions, and maternity leave. They can still so extend eligibility for those. specific situations. Now, athletes, like I said, have already used their four seasons under the old system, will not get the extra year. And that's where some of these guys have.
Donald Glenn: gone off the deep end and trying to get in. Um, They got cut. They still had a year of eligibility under the old system, and they want it back. ah Most conferences, the Big Ten came out and said, we aren't going to do that.
Donald Glenn: If you have signed a professional contract, whether you're with the team or not. You inked your name to a professional deal. You are no longer eligible to play in the Big Ten. Now...
Donald Glenn: LSU and Lane Kiffin were playing some footsie games with a couple of... ah former Uh, athletes. that that had signed pro contracts. And they were.
Donald Glenn: Planning on signing them? uh, adding them to the roster. Then when the big tens had their. say so. Um, the SEC.
Donald Glenn: came in and said, yeah, we're going to do what the Big Ten did. you can't you know We're not going to allow that. So he didn't do it. Uh, but now you've got those two and I think there's like 42 athletes in total that now have separate.
Donald Glenn: Separate and in some cases. ah ah Joint lawsuits. against the NSEB. NCAA against different institutions.
Donald Glenn: ah claiming that they should get those time or that time available allotted to them to participate in college sports. I don't know where all this is gonna end up going. ah But I think it's a bad idea.
Donald Glenn: And it needs to get nipped, as Barney Fife would say. Nip it in the bud. Nip it, nip it, nip it. So. There's that. Um...
Donald Glenn: There's also talk of...
Donald Glenn: juicing up the playoffs by adding more teams. And, you know, it's ah it's been a natural talk ever since they first came up with the football playoff system. And they always keep talking about it in basketball. And they're actually told me expanding that one, too, which I think.
Donald Glenn: Basketball, they need to leave alone. As a matter of fact, I would reduce the number back to 64 total. End of story. Get rid of the play -in games and call it a day. In football, they want to add, they want to go to 16 teams.
Donald Glenn: ah which that's been the thought that they were going to do that. But... now there's talk. ah Well, 16 is not going to be enough. We need to go to 24. We need, we needed to skip the seat.
Donald Glenn: No. 16 is... I think a perfect number. When you're talking college sports. You're still going to get your number of conference, you know, the big conferences in. You still got an opportunity to get the. ah a group of five, group of six, whatever they call it now, get those guys in.
Donald Glenn: And... It's... I, they only want to do it because they want the big, and and I'll tell you who's driving it. The Big Ten and the SEC. They want to get more teams in.
Donald Glenn: ah because they think they deserve more teams in than anybody else. And I'm not going to lie. You know, there is, when you look at the football, when you look at college football. A lot of your.
Donald Glenn: Better known teams, the teams that have played a big role in college football, you know, been at the top are. Out of the SEC. Out of the Big Ten.
Donald Glenn: um Now, some of those SEC and Big Ten were not. I mean, they were ah Big Eight or Pac -12 or Pac -10. uh old southwest conference back in the day uh but you know,
Donald Glenn: the, they are what they are now, which is. Big Ten and SEC. I mean, you've got like. Oklahoma, Texas. you know, used to be. Big 12. uh, uh, Southwest Conference. ah Um...
Donald Glenn: stalwarts, if you will. ah Nebraska. Um, Penn State. Um... You know, we're... we're other conferences and we're, we're, you know,
Donald Glenn: UCLA was a Pac -12. Now... with these merging and super conferences and i i'm still on the fence with some of these super conferences.
Donald Glenn: I don't like uh big mega conferences. ah per se. I think the Big Ten made a huge mistake adding the four teams from the West Coast.
Donald Glenn: Um, I think the ACC, well, the ACC didn't really make a big mistake. I think Stanford and Cal made a huge mistake going to the ACC.
Donald Glenn: Um, You know, now the teams that went to the big 12. ah You know, that's kind of a natural fit. You get you got your Arizona, Arizona State. there they They belong, that's you know, that's kind of where they are.
Donald Glenn: Um, But and it's strange that during all that. collapse of the Pac -12, the SEC wanted none of them. They didn't win any of them. you know, and. I don't know if that's because they're still trying to court.
Donald Glenn: Others ah from the ACC. I mean, there's been talk of that, talk of taking Clemson. uh or uh Florida. from the ACC or Miami and moving them into the South. uh the sec Don't know if that's actually going to happen or not. That's just been some of the talk over the years.
Donald Glenn: Um, But i'm i'm I'm in favor of going to 16. I think 16 is a good number and it still fits within the schedule they're using now. um they They wouldn't have to add any more game any anymore games. They wouldn't have to add any more dates. Well, they'd add games, but they wouldn't have to have any more dates. You would eliminate. all of the buys, the buys would be gone.
Donald Glenn: And I think maybe that's why some. want to go to 24 because they can put the four buys back in which i think the buys need to go go away they need to go bye -bye ah So. you know there is that But so, um you know, ah we'll keep up. I'll keep doing the little bits like that. We'll talk a little bit. sports all the way and i hope you guys like the show it may end up being a little bit shorter format unless i have guests um

Donald Glenn: I had some health issues like I did. ah A little bit different, though. he he She was still recovering. so Hopefully that will... ah he He'll get back to... ah uh,
