Speaker: Welcome to Chatsanami, a Scottish variety podcast that discusses topics from gaming and films to anime in general interest. Join me, your host, Satsanami, as well as the rest of our Chatsanami team for our takes on these very important pop culture topics. Sir, it's clearly a trap. I accept your fate! That three times in the film. Every time that general goes, don't do this one thing, he goes... Do you know what I'ma do? That's exact.
Speaker: No! it doesn't well she had the pointy teeth what was that about she looked like bilbo when he wants the ring back She turned into... I just want the lightsaber one more time. Parasite says, no, you will get back into your office and work. No, says the man in Zoom. yeah Trousers are for the working man.
Speaker: You're bursting into your hotel room. Honey, we need to go. Leave the kids. You can milk an audition. Oh
Speaker: That's the worst thing you've ever said on any of the episodes. If that sounds like your cup of tea, then you can check us out at our website, chattsanami .com, as well as all good podcast apps. As always, stay safe, stay awesome, and most importantly...
Speaker: Stay hydrated.
Speaker: I know I keep saying this, Pandalorians, but seriously, where has the time gone? It's absolutely wild knowing that not only are we two months away from the end of 2026, but more importantly, we have just wrapped up our final con of the year. And that con, of course, is Fan Frontier's KoyoCon.
Speaker: Listen, I've been going to Fan Frontier cons for a while now, and I can without a doubt say that they put on a fantastic show every time. From Power and Kaiju, to Epic and Koyo, you're always going to get a well -rounded experience for everyone. That being said, this Koyo con would be a little different, as we in the Chats and Ami team were invited to host the BIG, and yeah, I said that in all caps, ANIME QUIZ. And let me tell you, it was an incredible experience. As soon as I was told about it, I... admittedly had to double check that it wasn't just a typo. Then again, after going to Fan Frontier events for a while now, we were absolutely more than happy to do it. I have to say, this whole year has been one of firsts for the podcast. First invite to cover a convention in the Highlands, first for hosting a panel, first for being nominated for an award, and last but certainly not least, a first for getting recognised at cons in public.
Speaker: However, this would mark the first time a Chatsunami -branded slot would be featured at a Fan Frontier show, and it was surreal seeing the podcast logo flash up on the screen as loads of people waited to hear the questions. So as usual, I got myself ready to go with only one slight issue.
Speaker: Yeah, as of recording this episode, the yeah UK is being hit with some horrible storms, with high winds and flooding striking across the country. Pairing that with two conventions happening simultaneously that day in Edinburgh and London, I did wonder if it was going to be quieter than usual. Nevertheless, I braved the high winds and made my way to the Glasgow SEC. Despite the grey atmosphere outside, it could not have been further from the opposite inside. The place was alive with congoers, both or KoyoCon, and a crafts fair next door, which honestly felt pretty fitting. But with this being the last con of the year, how would it fare compared with the others? What would it be like hosting the big anime quiz with Martin McAllister? And what familiar faces would I meet? Get your pens ready for the quiz as we dive into what makes KoyoCon so memorable. But first, we'll be right back after these messages.

Speaker: By now I've gotten used to attending conventions at the Glasgow SSE, but over the years it feels like every time I return, it's like slipping into a comfortable hoodie. Well, if that hoodie was branded with the Chatsanami logo, of course. At this stage it's become my official Comic -Con outfit, but I should really invest in a new one. Anyway, that's a problem for future Satsu. What's also interesting is meeting the same faces at a con. From artists to even the crew who work there, it's amazing to see the same faces pop up. I've said it before, but the staff are always friendly and on point at these events. Which reminds me, I just want to give a particular shout out to Jason who I met briefly at the con. Honestly, it was great chatting to you. On the way, Martin and I met a few familiar artists from an M &E co who shared my woes about the latest Mass Effect news to Mooncakey Art Cafe who was talking about all the artwork she had been working on. It's genuinely one of my favourite parts of the con getting to talk to people and of course I couldn't get away without saying hi to Grant Blue who is I had it in good authority he had a Biddy Blaze sticker that I unashamedly made a beeline for once I saw it out. Of course, I also got to chat with Murasakone, which again, I hope I'm saying that name right, along with Acoustica Photography, whom I talked to both of them at Highland Realms and had a great conversation with. Also a huge shoutout to Nightastic, who I got an incredible Dragon Ball sticker set from. Super nice person, by the way. Definitely check out their work if they appear at your local Comic Con. There was also... RJ Ark, who I got great Studio Ghibli stickers from, Amy Noon and Prima Varam, who both had some fantastic Resident Evil artwork respectively, and Mr Rolling Circle, who I've got to say loved the Tom Nook Taxes stickers and the Metal Sonic Hua Hua. I mean, you know exactly the one I'm talking about. I also want to give a huge shout out to Sysmonchik Studios, and I am so sorry if I mispronounce that, for having the incredible idea for bundling their stickers into seven. packs based on the series they belong to. Absolutely love the Avatar stickers by the way, thank you. Also to Lucy's Fan Art for the Feel the Kennedy sticker. I'm sure I'll find a place for that one. I also want to shout out the artist Glasgow as well, who every time I come to these events and I see those very familiar stickers with the traffic cones on their heads, honestly, makes me smile every time. And it was great chatting to you guys as well. And one more shout out to the trio of artists who I actually got prints from. First, Holsey for that amazing Expedition 33 print. Once I get a frame for that, it is going on the wall. Also to the aforementioned Anemone Cove for the Garris print. And last but certainly not least, Slight Art for not only their cool stickers, but also the Scran print that features some hand -drawn highlights of Scotland's cuisine. Trust me, if there's a picture of a tea cake, then chances are I'll probably be hanging it on the wall. Just don't ask what the inside of the Chatsunami studio looks like. All joking aside, It was great to explore the con to see what was on offer, beyond the photo opportunities and the artists. There was also a Japanese calligraphy class, a silent disco, and more importantly, a retro gaming area, which not only had a number of arcade machines and N64s raring to go, but they also had a Super Smash Bros tournament which seemed to be going all out. Honestly, whoever won that tournament, genuinely, well done to you. There was also a number of events throughout the day on the main stage, but one particular event that caught our eye, or should I say ears, was the cosplay karaoke. I mean, come on, how many events do you know where Link and Pikachu rock out to the Pokemon theme? Some really talented folk out there singing the hearts out. Huge shoutout to them. But as I said, it wouldn't be until half one, when Martin and I were to go on the main stage to host the big anime quiz of Koyokon. Again, it felt quite surreal to have our logo against it, but in all the best ways. What also took us both off guard was the amount of people eager to take part. While I had my doubts about how many people would show up, the actual amount was incredible. And to all the people who had to wait an extra minute for us to get sorted, thank you so much for being with us. And while Martin read out the questions, I was there helping mark the quizzes, as well as walking around with a tablet for the picture round, to help show anyone who could see the screen on stage. Keep this in mind. mind as this'll be semi -important later, but it was really cool seeing how engaged everyone was after four rounds of non -stop anime -themed questions, which probably showed a rage a little, we had our three winners, who collected some amazing prizes, which ranged from a Pokemon Lego set, an anime -themed t -shirt, and last but certainly not least, a K -Pop Demon Hunters doll, as well as free tickets to the next event, so the prizes were absolutely incredible. But another cool bonus of the quiz was when we asked the participants to doodle while the quiz was going on, and we got quite possibly one of the funniest portraits of ourselves from Team Macky Macky. You can see it over on my Instagram page, Chatsanami, but in it, I'm depicted as the iPad man holding a tablet that says, you're dumb, and Martin is depicted as the host man. Honestly, gave us such a chuckle, thank you for that. And once that was finally over, Martin and I collected our thoughts and decided to do our usual on -site thoughts about the con. I would jokingly call this subseries me and Martin's car talking into a mic, but if I'm honest, if I kept that up, he would no doubt throw me out mid episode that side what were our thoughts during the con taking away past us hello pandalorians and welcome back to our recap of koyo con i am currently sitting here in the heart of the tempest apparently because there's a storm hitting the uk right now amber weather warning it is and i braved it for you pandalorians me and several thousand other people who came to a craft fair as well all families but yeah the main thing is we braved the elements i am sitting in the Glasgow SEC staff car park in Martin's car. Yep. Hello. I'm also here with my car. I don't know why he starts to introduce me there. But it's me, it's Martin McAllister. Well, it would be weird if I was just like, yeah, I'm in Martin's car. He doesn't know about it, guys. Do not tag him. You never mentioned it. True. I'm also in my own car. It is an amber weather warning. We are outside the SEC, as mentioned in the staff car park. Because we have staff today. Yes. Because we were very busy today at Coyocon. The last of our many cons in this wee run here. It's been a fun time. Let's get into it. Yeah, it's been absolutely fantastic this year because, I mean, I don't know about you, but I'm all conned out. There are so many cons that we've done. Last week, we were at Highland Realms. A couple of weeks before, we were at Epic Con here. And now, as you said, we're in the final. Well, I don't know about you. You might have a wrestling con coming up. I believe this is my final convention of the year. Until it's not. There'll be somebody out there like, hmm, let me see. December con? But yeah, of course. It has been an absolutely fantastic convention. As always, Fan Frontier, huge shout out because you always do a fantastic con, but even more so because today we got a bit of a spotlight put on us, didn't we? Mmm. For all the right reasons, which is what they say. We got spotlight put on us. Good. Parentheses good. But yeah, today we ended up doing the big anime quiz. I said it that way because it's in all caps. The big anime quiz. And yeah, it went pretty darn well, didn't it? Yeah, we were on the main stage at Koiwakon and the Chatsunami logo was on the stage. So well done to you. Yeah, that was quite surreal. I'm not going to lie. And we hosted a quiz that I wrote and we made it quite difficult. Everyone was a good sport, and we gave away some good prizes and had a lot of fun. Yeah, no, everyone seemed to enjoy it, though. But there was one or two warts, I think. Warts? Yeah, but no, in all seriousness, it was a fantastic quiz. And I remember when we looked out, and that's what we were saying before it, we're like, oh, yeah, there's a decent number, a healthy number. And then the floodgates opened, didn't it? Yeah, we printed off a number of sheets. Yeah, yeah. I don't know the exact number of them, but we ended up then having to run round and find blank sheets. I had to pull out sheets I had from... other quizzes yeah we were overloaded with people so thank you everyone for coming along that was very very nice yeah for anyone listening who took part in the quiz huge shout out to you because yeah no you did fantastic and as well the doodles on some of the sheets they were fantastic we actually got and you put up an instagram and i'll be putting it up after this but we got a portrait of ourselves yeah personalized on the fly live drawing doodles i like how your one was host man it was very sophisticated very oh that was lovely yeah you were called host man i was called ipad guy with an ipad that said you're dumb you are a dumb they nailed it i'm just looking at the picture now they really nailed my wooden smile they really did that is fantastic but no it's been a fantastic con because even before that we got a chance to again you know do what we usually do walk around talk to a few familiar faces and whatnot and yeah no it's been absolutely brilliant and i'm really surprised that the amount of people who have i know a joke there at the start and said you came out and braved the elements but it is quite a windy and wet day today so yeah huge shout out yeah absolutely it's been fantastic busy again and yeah lots of cool stuff at coyote this year so lots of like spotlight on the artists on artist alley because mcm edinburgh's on the same day today and london and london so there's a real split between like lots of people so for them to run this and get so many people in i think it's absolutely incredible oh no absolutely is because i have to say i was really surprised at that when i saw usually when I come to these cons I'll share the posts for artists and people coming to the con and everything and I'll say oh yeah they're coming here they're coming there but it's like trying to decipher who's coming here who's going to London and who's going to Edinburgh yeah it was honestly just incredible so a wee spoiler I guess a wee background behind the scenes here you're about to go back to the con I have to go off to go to a wrestling show so your list of things that you've bought is currently incomplete you have bought some nice stuff so you'll probably give your shout out in the post but I'll do a quick one to my friend Noodles. I bought a sticker off her stall and that's the first one on my new water bottle that made its debut on the stage. Nice. A lovely little Moogle sticker. So thank you so much for that. And yeah, I just want to give a huge shout out to Jason, part of the SEC crew. Well, the Fan Frontier crew who is helping out today. I know he listens to these episodes. So yeah, huge shout out. It was great to meet you. Again, that makes one, two, I want to say three or four maybe times that people have come up to me. It's happening. It's happening, yeah. And we also had someone come up to meet you. You've had a couple of vendors recognise you. It's happening. Yep. I've had my photo taken. You've had your photo taken. The ball is rolling. To be honest, I probably had people taking photos on the anime quiz like, this is a guy who marked it wrong.
Speaker: I will find you my DMs are flooded right now oh no but no in all seriousness as I said I am gonna yeah head back in and do my last lap talk to a couple of people and what about yourself I'm off to a wrestling show now so I can't talk anymore about that because I don't know the details wrestling sometimes is like that sometimes you know years in advance what you're up to some days you know as you get through the door which is what I'll be finding out today absolutely amazing but yeah as always thank you all so much for listening to this and martin thank you so much for joining me for the last con of 2026 yes thank you for having me along on the podcast once again and thank you for taking over my car to turn it into a podcast studio yeah no problem it's very cozy in here but yeah let's go do our things Over to the main episode. Now get out of my car. Get out of my car.
Speaker: With the end of 2026 around the corner, I can't help but feel grateful for all the opportunities I've had for these cons. This year alone, we've been to around five conventions, four of which have been fan frontier run, and I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. The more I go to these cons, the more I understand just how important they are for the general geek community, from the artists and vendors to cosplayers and performers. This provides a space for them to be themselves for the day and express their interests within their respective fandoms. I also want to shout out the team who work in these conventions behind the scenes. You guys are all amazing and do an utterly incredible job. They're also such a huge part of what makes Fan Frontiers work, and honestly you should be proud of what you accomplish every year. So here's to you, and may 2027 be an even greater year for the cons. But for those who went and are listening to this, what did you think of Koyokon? And what fan frontier event will you be going to in 2027? Well, be sure to let us know below. But as always, thank you all so, so much for listening to this episode.
