What is up my pottery shapers? Welcome to Shaping Your Pottery with Nick Torres. In this episode, I'm gonna be explaining some common mistakes that happen while centering and opening your clay.

Issues with Fast Centering

So now, the first mistake that always tends to happen is people go way too fast. They go way too fast and it causes their arms to jiggle and it makes everything way more difficult.

So you need to be able to slow down a little bit. A lot of times people say that you can actually go faster while centering. I tend to disagree. I think you should be going about the same speed you would do while you are pulling a

wall. The next mistake that I see a lot of people do is that they will try to open their clay

before the clay is centered let me say that again they will try to open their clay before the clay is centered this does not work it cannot work it it makes everything so much more difficult for yourself and you can't really you can't

make what you want and you end up failing a lot of times when you do this. So you have to make sure that the clay is completely centered. I don't care how many pounds of clay, how many ounces of clay you have, you always make sure the clay is centered.

Impact of Bottom Thickness on Pottery

Speaker
The next mistake is they always, they tend to either make the bottom too thick or too thin.
00:01:47
Speaker
And now this is a common mistake that happens with beginners and sometimes more experienced potters, but these two mistakes are really one, it's kind of detrimental to your pottery progress. If you make the bottom too big, you don't get as much clay as you want. You can't get to the height that you really want. You can't push your clay. If you make it too thin,

it becomes that much easier to poke through when you are trimming or when it's done drying. So those were three mistakes that happened while centering and opening your plate.
